Kira arrives at the Sacred Ossuarium believing she has finally escaped the suffocating judgment of Blackreach. The academy is the pinnacle of necromantic scholarship, a place where her silent communion with the dead is a rare gift. Here, she hopes to bury her past, master her craft, and carve out a future far from anyone who ever pitied her for being deaf.

But the Ossuarium’s vaulted halls are not the refuge she imagined.

Beneath its candlelit halls and scholarly rituals lies a hidden commerce in stolen lives—an ancient, forbidden trade the Church denies even as the dead whisper its truth. And the translator assigned to her, a man infuriatingly beautiful, seems to be carrying secrets dangerous enough to spell her doom.

As Kira witnesses the Church’s cruelty firsthand, her ambitions collapse into ash. Drawn into a conspiracy that threads through both the living world and the realm of the dead, she must wield forbidden magic, navigate treacherous alliances, and confront a darkness older than the Ossuarium itself.

To challenge such power is to risk everything: her future, her friendships, the dangerous pull of the man she should not trust—and her life.

In a place built on bones and lies, the one she trusts most will be the one who breaks her most completely.

**check the trigger warnings before reading!**
I have been wanting to read more gothic romantasy books so, this book seemed promising.

Kira is the first deaf necromancer admitted to the Sacred Ossuarium, where she can practice necromancy. However, once she arrives things are not as expected. Secrets are all around her and Ossuarium is not what she thought it was.

This was not what I expected. It was definitely a lot darker and emotional than I thought it would be, kept me at the edge of my toes. I could very clearly imagine the world building in my head while reading. I loved how fast paced the story was, but at some times I was definitely confused. I still flew through it without even realizing. I enjoyed the first half more than the second half though, it kinda lost me. I felt very confused on what was happening and the magic. It felt rushed and a bit incomplete, I wish everything was more fleshed out.

Kira was fun to read about, I love a female protagonist who is relentless and badass.
Her familiar, Ester, was another favorite of mine, so grumpy, sassy and protective over Kira. The bond between the two was precious. The male character, Vallen, is your typical morally grey character. He has a traumatic backstory, trying his hardest to stay away from Kira but is pulled toward her nevertheless. The enemies to lovers in this story wasn’t as slowburn as I would have wanted, quite instalove actually. Sadly I didn’t really feel anything for them together and wish their relationship was more fleshed out.

Thank you to the author and NetGalley for this e-arc in exchange for a honest view.

ARC review

Profaned by NM Peterson is a fantasy romance standalone.

This author uses her writing to process her rage and frustration about what’s going on in her world and provides an alternative conclusion where people got what they deserved.

Quick blurb
Kira has just received her invitation to attend the Sacred Ossuarium and learn necromancy. She is naturally gifted and she can’t wait to learn more.
Kira is deaf, but she never let that stop her. At school, she makes friends with Elja. The Elder quickly show an interest in her. She gets invited to a formal dinner where she finds out that this school is not the salvation she thought it was going to be for her. She won’t simply comply.

There is a lot of emotion put in this book. I really loved the FMC and the disability rep. As a person who has access to all my senses, there are many things and challenges I never thought about for those who don’t. Kira is strong, kind and resourceful. I loved the academia part! For once, it is not just an excuse for parties and sex 😅

Sadly, only the first part of the book is set at Sacred. Something happens, and the setting is moved. The second part was slightly slower. When she figures out what is going, there is training and fighting. I would have liked more details on the fighting.

The romance seems to be both a slow burn and a little too easy. It takes a while to happen, but I don’t find that they truly build much of a relationship or connection before falling for each other.

All in all, I had a good time. My interest was deeper in the first part, I could hardly put it down. I wish we had more information on the network and the villains. I love that it is a standalone, but I think maybe a duology would have allowed to dig deeper into the world.

If you love a story about dismantling the evil, misogynistic, secret societies ruling the world, then this is for you.

If you love watching a disabled FMC defeat the odds, working with her rabbit familiar and magic she’s forbidden to use, in her battle against tyranny, then this is for you.

If you simply love dark academia stand alone’s with magic, action, romance, and HEA’s, then this is for you.

This dark, gothic academia is unlike others I’ve read. The magic is necromancy based and original. The world is intricately built, yet easy to picture. And this FMC is capable and relentless.

At this point, just know that I will read everything Peterson writes.

Gothic Academy
Unique Magic
Rabbit Familiar
Disability Rep
Trauma + Healing
Religious Abuse
Secret Societies

3.5 ⭐️ rounded up.

TL:DR
Trigger warning for SA.
The plot overall was really intriguing and is what kept me reading. I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed the inclusivity and world building. But I have several issues with the plot line and characters.
I did enjoy Kira and Elja's friendship. It gave me Wednesday Addams and Enid vibes. Loved it.
FMC was awesome despite some of her choices. She has a fantastic personality and is witty, tenacious and overall badass. There were also some funny moments. The grumpy sassy rabbit familiar was so good.
The storyline was a plot twist I wasn't expecting which was a refreshing change from typical dark academia.
I wish the magic system was a bit more flushed out but it was really interesting from what we were able to learn.
I don't think I've ever said this before but I think this book should have been longer and added to it.

If you enjoy dark academia while also dismantling a secret society of evil men, give this one a shot.
+ Enemies to lovers
-----
I took a lot of notes so;
My main reasons for giving this book high marks is because
1. I absolutely loved that our FMC is deaf. It's not often that Deaf/HOH folks get representation in books. American Sign Language and deaf culture is a special interest of mine so this was fun for me to try and remember signs while she was signing. I'm not anywhere near fluent but I could picture some of the scenes in my head with her signing and I loved that. It gave her character a lot of depth and I loved that she never let it affect her ability to be a badass and persevere.
2. The plot itself was really intriguing and kept me hooked immediately. I stayed up way too late reading this because I couldn't put it down, regardless of the issues I have with the story.

With that being said, these are my issues with the story and why I couldn't rate this 5 stars.
The major issue is the romance aspect. There was ZERO chemistry between Kira and Vallen. She seemed more into his cousin than she did Vallen. They barely had 2-3 encounters before he was "falling for her" and she gave no inclination that she felt anything romantically towards him at all. And then they were just...together? It felt extremely forced and rushed. The intimate scenes were just...strange. They happened at the worst and weirdest times and felt like it came out of absolutely no where. I think maybe because it also felt so mechanical and no actual feeling behind it. If there was more chemistry between them, I think the scenes might have fit a bit better.
The betrayal I felt was way too far for him to ever find any redemption, considering the lack of emotional connection they had and the absolute brutality of the betrayal. How she managed to forgive him and regain feelings for him was astounding. I'm all for a redemption arc but there just wasn't enough there for it to make sense.
I think this story would have done better if the romance aspect was scraped entirely because it really ruined the most of it for me because it made no sense.

The ONLY person who made any effort into learning sign language was Elja, and it was merely glossed over. I don't think people understand how important it is for deaf/HOH people to have the ability to communicate and be understood and it means a lot when people just TRY to learn basic signs. Vallen didn't try AT. ALL. That really bugged me and rubbed me the wrong way. If he is supposed to "love" her but not even want to learn her language? Communicate without her having to do all the work lip reading and writing in her notebook? It just was another thing that took away from whatever sort of relationship they were supposed to have.

The magic system was confusing and I feel like it could've been flushed out more. It was interesting from what was given but I would've liked to learn more about the Gods, the history, the way the magic worked. And her studies. It felt like we didn't see her in classes except those couple times. The information we do get didn't give a rounded out picture of what the author was trying to have the magic system be.

I would've liked to know more about WHY Kira is special and her importance in the story.
I would've wanted to know a lot more about Vallen and his background. Also where the hell did Caspian go?! He just poofed! The ONE person who could sign was just thrown out of the story when he was a major person tied to the secret society. I really enjoyed Elja, I just wished she played more of a role in the story. Even through her betrayal.
Kira really had no one who didn't do her dirty, lol.

I really liked the secret society and the brutality of what the Elder and priests were doing. It felt so raw and real and unfortunately realistic in today's time so the plot being that they take this whole organization down was a big HELL YES from me. I just wish there would've been more explanation about it all.
The ending felt rushed and we didn't really have an actual "fight." This large powerful organization and there was little to no crescendo. Only the scene with the Elder was satisfying.
We never find out what happens with Thalia.
Did they save/rescue the remaining women and children? Did they unbind and release the souls in the catacombs? Did Kira ever get to learn the magic she wanted?
There were just so many questions left unanswered that made the story feel shallow which is a juxtaposition to the severity of the subject matter.

Overall, even with the plot line issues this story kept me hooked and I didn't want to stop reading.
I plan to read more from this author because I liked the writing style overall and think that I could enjoy other books by this author.

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this ARC.

--3.5 stars--

This book follows Kira (FMC) and Vallen (MMC). Kira is a very strong main character, both in personality and character stability. She loves those around her deeply, but is also extremely intelligent and willing to fight for what she believes in. Vallen follows a similar code, often developing his character traits through Kira.

This book was written beautifully. The prose was poetic, lyrical, and symbolic. I could tell the author has a passion for the craft, it bled through almost every word. This stood out to me the most and was a pleasant surprise. There were a few minor issues, though, such as typos and formatting problems. The most noticeable was that the “Interlude” appears mid-page, and the word itself is not formatted (bolded or stylized) to distinguish it from the rest of the text.

I also appreciated how original this story felt. The magic system was compelling and unlike anything I’ve read before. The setting, a gothic academy, could have felt overused, but the author made it her own, especially through the secrets carved into its walls. The world overall was beautiful and complex in a grim, tragic way. However, I felt it wasn’t fully fleshed out. The magic system wasn’t explored enough, and neither was the world surrounding the characters. Kira is implied to be special, but we never fully learn how or what impact this has on the world around her. I often felt confused about the magic and wanted more clarity about the gods and the mechanisms behind it.

I loved Elja and Kira’s friendship, as well as Kira’s relationship with Esther. Elja was an amazing friend to Kira, and Kira to her, they both made efforts to support and protect each other. While Elja has her own struggles, they are understandable given the circumstances. I just wish she had played a larger role in the story so we could get to know her better. I felt similarly about Esther, whose character sometimes felt more like plot support than a fully developed being. The same applies to Thalia, we didn’t get much clarity about her or the chance to truly understand her character.

Vallen is a major issue for me, and his relationship with Kira is an even bigger one. In my opinion, Vallen is irredeemable. His betrayal impacts not only Kira but many others indirectly. His character feels overly dependent on Kira, which was frustrating. Without her, he doesn’t seem able to stand on his own. He falls for Kira very early on, but we’re never given a convincing reason why. Their relationship develops too quickly, they barely know each other before they’re suddenly in love. Kira also shows little interest at first, yet their relationship escalates quickly into emotional and physical intimacy.

The second half of the book improves in this regard, giving more space for their relationship to develop. However, it still felt rushed and somewhat surface-level by the end, as they never truly take the time to understand each other beyond what’s already established.

Overall, the idea was solid, original, and compelling. The writing style was gorgeous, and Kira was an excellent character. However, the execution felt somewhat rushed at times and not fully developed. Despite this, It's still a very interesting and attention grabbing read.

I received an advanced copy of this for free. All opinions are my own.

Thank you to Book sirens and the Author for an ARC of this unique story.

Solid 3/5. There were some things that didn't work for me, but the things that did work, REALLY worked.

Starting off with the aspects that really worked for me... First, what a cool magic system! This is the first novel I've read with necromancy type magic. It was so interesting to me and It kept me intrigued!

Another thing that really worked for me what that the MCF was Deaf. I haven't read any books with this representation and it was so well done! I think it's important to have all types of representation in books and this was so amazing to read. I felt such a connection with Kira from the very beginning.

And finally, who doesn't love a story where all the evil POS characters die! I love that Kira and Vallen worked together to take down the entire system. Hell yes! And this dark academia setting... Yes!

Now for a few things that didn't work for me in this book.

For one, the romance. It was severely lacking for me. It felt underdeveloped and kind of "InstaLove." Vallen and Kira like barely even have one conversation and it wasn't like a friendly conversation and then we get.. "I'm falling for her." from Vallen and I was kinda like... What? HOW? It felt like....
Hi... Here's this deaf girl that started at my school... Let me see her like twice, and act like she is horrible.... I'M IN LOVE.
I just didn't find any romance, yearning, emotions, or build up to their relationship so It didn't do anything for me at all.

Next thing that didn't work for me was like the Mid point where we go from Kira and Vallen being alive to being dead. I feel like there was a lack of detail as to why that had to happen. I think that this story could have benefited from being a good bit longer. I needed things to be better explained. When I reached that second part of the book, it felt kind of random to me. I guess with the lack of details, I feel like the story felt rushed and unfinished.

I wish we got more back story on Vallen and Elja, and a better explanation of the magic system and some world building. If It had these things, I think it would have been a solid 5/5 for me.

But even with all of that being said...
I enjoyed this! I wanted to continue to read it. The writing held my attention. I will definitely read other books by this author because I believe they have a real talent when it come to writing, and I can't wait to give one of their other books a try.

In all, I would recommend giving this book a try! Excellent Job NM Peterson! Please Keep Writing!

This book will leave you heartbroken!!

This book left me with so many thoughts. It made me cry, reflect and just let it all sink in with everything I read. That is exactly what I want from a book. It’s gripping, emotional, dark, cruel and somehow still so beautiful. I Loved it.

I also really loved the author’s writing. The atmosphere in the book is amazing and the world feels so alive without being hard to follow. The language is simple in a good way and just easy to get into. The story touches on heavy topics that don’t just stay in the book. It makes you think about the real world too.

The first half of the book focus on the academy and the main character Kira's excitement about finally being in the school. Where she can practice magic, Necromancy. She finds a new friend and gets drawn to two boys Caspian and Vallen. Both boys clearly hiding secrets.

The FMC Kira is deaf, which adds such an interesting perspective to the story. It puts her in difficult situations sometimes, but also gives her strengths in ways others don’t have. She’s strong, brave and caring, even after everything she’s been through before she started the school. Kira can also talk to the dead and she has a familiar - a rabbit "Esther". She is grumpy, protective and full of personality. I so loved it.

As the story goes on, she starts to feel that something isn’t right at the school. There are secrets everywhere and a hidden society connected to academy and the church. The more she finds out, the more it puts her in danger.

The MMC Vallen is morally grey, shaped by trauma, dark but also vulnerable. The chemistry between them is so good. Starting with stolen glances and building into a slow-burn, enemies to lovers. The spice feels natural, vulnerable and real and I so loved that.

The pacing in the first half is steady, but then everything crashes and the story really takes off. The twists and plots are so good that by the end you’re not entirely sure what you just read and that in the best way.

My only complaint? I didn’t want this book to end.

I gave this book ⭐️ 5/5 because this book just made me feel so much and I’m still thinking about it.

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to Arc read this dark amazing emotional book. I am so looking forward reading more from the author.

My review is all my own thoughts.

Profaned follows Kira as she joins the sacred Ossuarium. She has a natural affinity to necromancy that she hopes to study to improve her station, but instead finds that, like most prestigious institutions, the Ossuarium is not only a den of power abuse, but might also be hiding a greater conspiracy.

In a sea of 'witty' banter( I swear if I get one more snarky line before the MMC exits the room I'm going to lay face down on the radiator), the prose in here was more lyrical, the world is explained organically as the story develops (as opposed to info-dumping), and disability representation was just refreshing.

I was stoked to find this was a ghost fueled mystery, delivering gothic romance along with a fantasy romance.

You get true enemies to lovers(enemies to reluctant allies to lovers?), like I didn't even want him to be the MMC for awhile there, and then I warmed up, and then I didn't like him again, and so on.

The plot moved quickly, the world building and magic system introduced subtly and letting you pick up here and there without needing 200 pages of info-dumping. It did, at times leave me a little confused as to what was literally happening as opposed to metaphorically happening, but it was typically cleared up later and generally left me less frustrated than exposition for exposition's sake.

***(Mild spoilers going forward)***
*****
***

There’s a plot twist about halfway, right around the time I thought this was going to turn into insta-love, so that was welcome. If you want morally grey, it’s here. Oh boy. I also appreciated the FMC acknowledging the MMCs part in the overall systematic oppression, and not just painting him out to be another victim.

My biggest complaint would probably be that most of evil-doing hit a little too close to home(no, I am not over the R*pe Academy, thank you for asking), though I cannot fault the book for that. Fantasy can be an escape. Fantasy can also be handling real world issues in a fantastical setting, making them easier to digest.

If you’re a fan of angst, taking down secret evil men societies, and just the right amount of ‘oh my god, no!’, this is for you.

What to expect:
✨ Dark Academia
✨ Gothic Romantasy
✨ Necromancy
✨ Enemies to Lovers
✨ Feminine Rage
✨ Reclaiming power
✨ Heartbreak

This book was so good. Very different from anything I have read before. I really enjoyed it.

Our FMC Kira is a strong, brave and kind. She also has a disability, she is deaf.
And she is tired of being judged and treated differently.

She gets accepted to Sacred Ossuarium, because she has the rare gift of being able to communicate with the dead.
Here she hopes to bury her past and master her craft.

But she soon learns that the Ossuarium is not the place she believed it to be. They are stealing people's lives. And trading them off.

She will stop at nothing to bring them down.

Our MMC Vallen has had a horrible life. Tortured and passed off to people to use.
He is a very closed off MMC and I really felt for him.

Vallen tries his hardest to stay away from Kira because he knows what they will do to her, Bute fate has other plans.

The chemistry between these two was soo good. 🤌🏽
Trauma finding trauma and cracking it wide open.

Kira has a rabbit familiar Esther that she can communicate with and I loved their bond.

The plot of this book is very unique and I really enjoyed it.

This is dark and gritty and emotionally damaging.
But there is hope and love.

I loved the ending of this book.

I would defiantly recommend this book.

Thank you to the author for sending me a copy of your book.

I was very very curious about this book! And I was so hooked at the start, it was giving dark academia and gothic vibes with enemies to lovers, and a secret society, and I adore all those tropes. The plot was very interesting and unique. Unfortunately, around the 30% mark it felt like everything that had been building up was just completely crammed together and rushed after that.

Kira our FMC, I loved how fierce and strong she was. I love the deaf representation, and I love that it brought awareness. However, she trusted everyone way too easily, there was nothing contemplative about her where she might be suspicious or anything.
It felt like there were a lot of plot holes. I couldn't understand why Vallen wanted to work against the ashes, like sure they're bad people but what was his motive?
The romance just suddenly happened it felt like there was no buildup to it. They barely interacted and he fell for her and then suddenly she fell for him. I wanted more tension and backstory between them. Because their chemistry and relationship felt so forced, his betrayal made him become a little irredeemable, because we didn't get much time with them and it felt like they hadn't formed a strong bond to actually understand each other. I do also wish the magic system could be more developed. It felt like the sole focus of this was secret society which started taking away from the magic.

I do see a lot of people enjoying this as it's very fast paced, it just was not the book for me!

I am not going to lie… I stopped at one point and stared, hand on mouth, at the book saying, “Did that just happen?!” I even read the page over two more times just in case, but oh yes it did happen, and the story continued too 😏. This book was a 5⭐️ read for me. This book was so good and will live in my brain for a while.

This gothic dark academia romantasy, is just that. The way she describes the world feels almost like a dark, gothic black and white world with very few and very purposeful flashes of color. There are some dark themes, so maybe, check out the warnings. I liked the magic system and the way she described the necromancy and death magic.

I loved the FMC Kira, she was strong and determined despite what she had stacked against her. Vallen, the MMC, was dark and broody. The banter was good, and despite things I cannot name, I liked him!! I’d put him on my list of book boyfriends. The other characters were also well done and I loved Esther, Kira’s bunny familiar!!

Definitely add this one to your TBR, I was only half way through and I ordered a signed copy from the author 🤭.

Check the triggers before reading this. There is a lot that happens on page.

I was drawn into this story from the first chapter, but it kinda fell off at the very end. There was a lot of build up to a quick conclusion in the last few chapters. The second half of the book also gets a bit confusing.

The romance felt forced. There was no real connection. Also the redemption arc of the MMC was basically non-existent. The FMC forgives him with almost no effort for something that wasn't really forgivable.

I did enjoy the world building and the magic system. It would've been nice to see more of the side characters and to flush out the whole plot of the buried girls and the bones.

This book could have been a bit longer to allow for the relationships to build, to flush out the magic system, and to complete some of the open plot points.

ARC Review - 4 stars

Pros:

The Main Character - It's not often that disabilities get highlighted, though she's not portrayed as a weak princess in distress, I feel seen!!

There was a lot of world building included, which was great, but it honestly could have gone further, more descriptions of the magic please!

I'm not one for romance usually, but there was a nice balance between romance and plotlines.

Con - There's just one, it's a slow burn. I wasn't captured instantly, but after a few chapters, I did want to know the ending! If I was captured instantly, it would have been 5 stars.

Overall, this is one for readers who love dark fantasy with depth, a strong central character, and a creeping sense that something is very, very wrong beneath the surface.

If you like your magic a little dangerous and your worlds heavy with atmosphere, this is worth picking up.

I received this book as an ARC from Booksirens for a fair and honest review.

Actual stars are 3.25.

I did like this book, but it felt rushed, and a little incomplete. Since this is a standalone the story was wrapped up well, but getting there just felt like too much too fast and without enough to be truly immersive. For me if this had been fleshed out more in both parts this could have been either a potential 5 star duology, or a potential 5 star epic standalone. I did overall enjoy the characters and while they could have been even better they were fleshed out enough, at least the main characters. I felt what suffered the most was the world, the magic system, and the political/religious structure. I'm disappointed because I really did want to love this story, but felt like it was mostly a race to get to the end rather than a journey to the final destination.

Profaned completely consumed me. This gothic dark academia fantasy is haunting, emotional, and impossible to put down — and as a standalone, it’s the perfect palate cleanser between long fantasy series.
Inside you’ll find:
• Necromancy
• Morally gray characters
• Found family
• Trauma & disability rep
• A snarky rabbit familiar
• A heartbreaking romance
Kira was such a compelling FMC. Guarded by trauma and constantly underestimated because of her disability, she sees her acceptance into a prestigious school as a chance to finally change her life. But the darkness waiting inside those walls — and the mysterious Vallen — unravel everything.
This story is filled with feminine rage, heartbreak, and catharsis. It doesn’t shy away from cruelty, power, or injustice, and watching Kira rise in spite of it all was unforgettable.

I was an Arc Reader for this book and I am leaving my honest and true review of this book because I wanted to.

So this book was a little different for me since I had to do with a differently abled mean female character who is deaf. I love the fact that this works with a character that cannot hear, but it does not keep her away from her magical powers, which is necromancy. And for me, it definitely gave me a feeling of the dark academia that I absolutely love. I am a huge fan of these types of books. And this book definitely ran with my favorites. There is really good character development and amazing world building. And I definitely found it as a page Turner. I would recommend this book and I am definitely going to be buying a copy for my trophy show. Thank you again for allowing me to read this book and reviewing it.

Where do I even begin. Ok I know where. The story building and all the dynamics to make up the story line. The suspense on what is actually happening in this dark, twisted world. The FMC is a strong, fierce young lady, who is stubborn in the best way possible, defeating all odds. The MMC, I was least expecting, despite his brooding personality, and questionable choice, turns out to be a huge pivotle, never knowing what he will actually do character. This world was nothing like I've ever read before, it's truly a dark academia, necromantic, enemies to lovers, with a twist of dark religious aspect. Happy reading, for the book is to come out May 2026!

N.M. Peterson did it again.

Don't let this little book fool you into thinking you are safe. You are not. Your mind is not safe; your soul is not safe; your emotions are not safe.

I stalked her for months, waiting for the ARCs to open, and I was ready when they did. Having read what she has written so far in the Chains of Orenda series, I already knew that Nicole wrote in a way I enjoyed reading. Dark but with hope that she then cuts out of you with a blunt knife, only to drip it back into the hole where your heart used to be.

Not to mention, the spice is perfectly balanced with the horror and the intrigue and the magic.

Short enough to be devoured quickly but long enough to make you fall in love and break your heart, a perfect addition to your library.

This was a good read but definitely fast paced, and their were times I was confused about the magic and how fast the book was moving along. I did love that that our FMC was written as a deaf character you honestly don't see that very often for a main character.
Overall I really enjoyed the story I just wished it was fleshed out a little more, not so rushed.
Thank you to the author and NetGalley for this e-arc in exchange for a honest view.
