OPTIMUS' NEW AUTOBOT TEAM REVEALED! A new team of Autobots remains on Earth under Optimus’ leadership. But can they come together after the battle between Optimus and Elita?
Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.
Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.
In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.
Seeing Optimus deal with the changes he is experiencing was the best part of the issue. I enjoy getting a deeper look at the characters. That ending page was terrific!
Finally, an update on the new version of Optimus. I'm slightly torn on the idea that the Matrix is what made Optimus more calm and calculated as I feel it undermines his character, but at the same time think it's a cool idea, especially as Elita-1 should hopefully start showing similar levels of "Prime" leadership. If she remains hot headed and reckless then this new idea doesn't hold water, or Optimus is just having a mid-life crisis. Which would also be a fun twist.
Otherwise, it's feeling mostly a set-up issue and fans of a certain decepticon will be happy. There was a weird character/monster in this issue that I was completely clueless about. Is it a transformer or something other kids toy franchise.
The art is solid, even if there isn't a great lot to do. I do like the design of Optimus in that it's subtly different and makes him look younger without any unnecessary or sensational changes.
I think the book is settling into a serialised format but I still have concerns each issue will focus on Earth or Cybertron which will really rob the book of momentum. Let's see if that's going to be the pattern next issue.
Overall impression = 3/5 Writing = 3/5 Art = 3/5
Will I read the next issue? yes
Wait for the trade collection? this book is starting to feel like classic Kirkman in that his stories are very serialised and I prefer them in larger chunks every 6 months. Yet I'm still reading as a monthly probably out of habit.
Did I need to read previous issues/series? While deeper knowledge is rewarded I think this works fine as a first issue in the sense Spike is narrating and getting us up to speed with Optimus' new status and team.
