This was an incredibly thought out story about an exiled knight and two sorcerers exploring multiple realms in hope of saving their own.
There was so many twists and turns, it was super interesting to read about the high fae, the underfae, and sorcerers, I mean the list goes on. It was quite a harrowing adventure these characters went on, and I was on my toes waiting to see what on earth would happen next.
Where I felt things lacking a little bit is the description of the main characters. All of that portion was very vague and I had a difficult time picturing them in my head. This was also the case for many of the creatures that they interacted with. The landscapes and realms they explored were explained enough in a way that I felt as though I could close my eyes and picture them.
The pace of the story was steady, if not a bit slow at times. Even though there was a good amount of action, it staggered at times and I felt there were parts that were dragged out.
Again, it was an insanely elaborate story that sucked me in. Melina was by far my favorite, she felt like the most mature one out of the group and always put the safety of others first, even if they were underfae and were deemed “evil”.
The romance in the novel was minimal, if not hardly there at all, but it’s brewing. It is quite obvious there will be a second book to follow, as there are many things unanswered. It did feel like it ended a bit too abruptly, as though the story was still being wrote, and just hasn’t been finished yet. I think there could’ve been a better cliff hanger to leave readers wanting more.
I didn’t really have any expectations for this book and yet I still ended up a bit disappointed. Since this is from a publisher that primarily has sapphic romances I expected this book to be quite romance heavy - more romantasy than fantasy with romance. But there is surprisingly little romance in this. Obviously the two main characters fall for each other, but the attraction between them is pretty low-key and only really shows up in the second half. And once it does show up I couldn’t really get into it, it just felt a bit dull and… unemotional I guess.
If the fantasy element of the book had been really good and innovative it might have made up for the somewhat lacklustre romance plot, but unfortunately that also fell rather flat for me. The world-building was nice, but light on details (especially concerning the magic system). As someone who almost exclusively reads fantasy and sci-fi the fantasy in this book was all stuff I’ve already read many times before. It’s not bad, it was fine, but it just wasn’t quite for me.
Also the ending makes it pretty clear that there is going to be a sequel and I am BEGGING publishers to declare that shit in the description. I am so tired of reading ‘stand-alones’ only to find out that ‘SIKE it’s a series’ on the last few pages. ---- Thank you to Bold Strokes Books for the ARC
I was slightly hesitant to read Blighted. I didn’t love the cover or the title, but the plot seemed up my alley. Thankfully, the book turned out to be fairly decent, albeit not perfect.
The book kept me interested throughout. The main characters were likable and interesting enough and the worldbuilding was pretty good. Out of the two main characters, I particularly liked Lili, though Melina was also an interesting character. I thought I was going to hate Dom, but he grew on me, as did Tryst and the Hag, both of whom I was expecting to hate. On the flip side, I really hated Lili’s father and seriously wish bad things on him. I also liked that there were also some revelations that I didn’t see coming (and some I did) and that we got to see multiple realms in this world.
In the first few chapters, I wondered if I had made a mistake in getting this. The book throws a lot at you immediately, which was a little offputting. I wish I had gotten to settle into the world for at least a chapter before everything started to happen. In the beginning, the writing was also a little distracting. Many of the sentences felt like they went on for far too long without a break. I don’t know if this stopped after a bit or if my brain just got used to reading them.
I was also a little disappointed with the romance. I expected more of it considering it's one of the genres listed, but it was pretty minimal in this one. Unfortunately, I also felt like the chemistry between the two main characters was lacking a bit. Not entirely, but I wish there had been more flirtatious banter between Lili and Melina. I mean, it tells you that there’s some feelings or attraction there on both sides, but I didn’t always feel it in their interactions.
I also didn't always understand the characters' reactions to things. It's like one thing would suddenly put them in a mood for some reason that wasn't explained or obvious, particularly with Lili. I also think the author also could have incorporated Raph a little better sometimes. Multiple times, I was wondering if he is still there because his existence is completely ignored sometimes.
My biggest annoyance, though, was that I didn’t see anywhere that this was just the first book (I realized about 85% through that there was no way it was going to wrap up), so now I’m very annoyed that I have to wait for a sequel. Because all in all, I did mostly like the book and do want to know what happens next.
Thank you NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed how fantasy forward the story was. I really liked the world building; there were some neat elements. I liked the idea of the underfae versus high fae. I really liked the different Faere realms that they were exploring. The writing was descriptive enough for me to imagine what was going on and there were plenty of unique creatures and environments.
There were two main characters, Melina and Lili, both of whom I enjoyed. Melina was by far my favorite. She was delightfully curious, brave, rash, and strong-willed, despite an upbringing that wasn't entirely supportive of her desire to learn and grow. I liked how much attention was given to both her and Lili's flaws and insecurities. There were two other members of the main party, Raph and Dom, both of who had fascinating relationships with Melina and Lili. I dearly wish the author had explored more of their characters, especially Dom who was an interesting foil to Melina. Raph at times felt like a narrative device for the story to move forward. This was a shame because he set up a really sweet dynamic with Lili. I hope in the sequel we get to explore their stories more and maybe see more of them with Melina and Lili, though the ending of the book leads me to think we won't be seeing much of them anymore (I really hope I'm wrong about this).
Overall, the book was paced kind of slowly, despite there being a lot happening. I kind of wish the middle/end of the book hadn't dragged on as much as it had. I also wish there had been a little clearer explanation of some of the magical elements and arguments that were happening.
Something I really enjoyed about Blighted was how little romantic focus there was. The book was way more fantasy focused than romance focused, but the romance and attraction was definitely there. I thought Lane did a fantastic job balancing her fantasy story moving forward and having the romance fit well into what was happening. I didn't feel like anything was forced and I felt like the characters' chemistry grew over time. This was really pleasantly surprising.
I would definitely recommend this book to fantasy lovers, especially those who want to see a sapphic romance. I personally really enjoyed this book and am very much looking forward to the next one!
Thank you to NetGalley, BoldStrokeBooks, and T.E. Lane for this ARC.
Blighted kept me engaged with enough mystery and intrigue to keep me invested, particularly through its fae realm elements and unfolding questions. There were definitely characters I found myself drawn to and others I struggled with — but in a way that felt intentional rather than accidental.
The story did a good job of maintaining curiosity, and I found myself continuing because I wanted answers and wanted to better understand the world and characters. While there is romance present, it never felt like the primary driver of the story. It sits more in the background of the larger plot and leans toward tension and possibility rather than high spice.
That said, my feelings on the ending depend heavily on whether this becomes a series. If this is the start of something larger, I’m invested enough to continue reading. If it turns out to be a standalone, the ending may feel a bit too open-ended to be fully satisfying.
Depth: An intriguing fae-centered story with mystery, shifting loyalties, and characters you won’t all equally root for — which felt purposeful.
Connection: I connected with some characters much more than others, but that seemed intentional and added to the overall dynamic of the story.
Momentum: The mystery and unfolding questions kept me engaged and turning pages, especially wanting to understand where events were heading.
Who it’s for: Readers who enjoy fae realms, mystery-driven fantasy, slow-burn romantic tension, morally mixed character dynamics, and stories that leave room for future installments.
Who it’s not for: Readers looking for high spice, romance as the central focus, or a tightly wrapped standalone ending may find themselves wanting something different.
Shelf Placement Review: Conditional Stay I’m interested enough to continue if there’s a sequel, but my final thoughts depend heavily on where the story goes next.
Blighted was a surprisingly immersive, fantasy-forward read with some really strong world-building. The different fae realms, especially the contrast between the high fae and underfae, felt creative and engaging, and the environments were described well enough to clearly picture the settings.
The characters were another highlight. Melina stood out as a favorite—curious, brave, and strong-willed despite her upbringing. Lili’s growth and insecurities were also thoughtfully handled, and the dynamic between the group made the journey feel meaningful. That said, I do wish side characters like Dom and Raph had been explored more, as they had interesting potential that felt underdeveloped at times.
The story itself is full of twists and an adventurous, high-stakes journey across realms, though the pacing could drag a bit, especially toward the middle and end. Some elements of the magic system and character descriptions were also a bit vague, which made certain moments harder to fully visualize or understand.
One of the more refreshing aspects was the minimal focus on romance. It’s present, but subtle and naturally developed, allowing the fantasy elements to take center stage without feeling forced.
Overall, it’s an elaborate and engaging story that fantasy fans—especially those interested in sapphic elements—will likely enjoy. While the ending felt somewhat abrupt and left many questions unanswered, it definitely sets up for a sequel that I’d be interested in picking up.
Thank you to TE Lane and Bold Strokes Books, Inc for this ARC of Blighted.
Blighted is a romantasy centering on Melina, a sorcerer, and Liliane, a knight. The story involves a “blight” that is occurring in this mystical land and is threatening to devour every living thing it touches. The characters have to journey into other lands with faerie creatures to try to protect a magical element and figure out what is causing the blight.
I really enjoyed the plot involving both Magic and faeries. I tend to gravitate toward magical, fantasy reads. Although the story included this, I was a little frustrated at the pacing. I felt the story had too many lulls and descriptions with just smatterings of excitement and adventure. I felt like the exciting and thrilling moments were rushed through and sandwiched with too much inner dialogue and thoughts.
I will say that I grew to like some of the side characters, like Dom, which surprised me. The character development with him was done really well. I appreciated the inner turmoil of the two main characters in who they are and what they were supposed to be/do. I enjoyed them pushing the boundaries of those self afflicted walls and becoming something more than they thought they could be/do.
Although the story is left with a cliffhanger and will most likely continue in a sequel, I don’t think I will probably continue the series if it is more than a duology.
Thank you to T.E. Lane and Bold Strokes Books for this copy in exchange for an honest review.
The premise of this story immediately pulled me in with an exile knight named Lili, a spreading magical disease, and a quest tied to the source of magic in the world. I enjoyed following Lili and the group as they traveled across different courts trying to understand what the Blight really is. I liked how immersive the author made the realms feel as the group interacted with the High Fae and the underfae.
The journey aspect of the story was one of my favorite parts, especially moving through dangerous forests and into new magical territories. The team dynamic kept things interesting and I liked seeing how each character contributed to the mission. At times the plot felt a little busy with all the moving pieces, but the central mystery of the Blight and its source kept me curious. I really liked the romance subplot amongst the traveling group between Lili and Melina.
By the end I was really intrigued by the revelations about the Tear and what it might mean for the world’s magic. The stakes start to feel bigger and the story’s ending set up more to come. I finished it hoping there will be a second book because the direction things are heading is really interesting!
Blighted is a fantastical adventure that sweeps readers across imaginative kingdoms and haunting landscapes, while quietly exploring prejudice, politics, and the fragile nature of self-worth.
I was immediately sold by the premise. An exiled knight, a budding sorcerer, and complicated fae politics? Sign me up! What I didn’t expect, however, was just how vibrant the worldbuilding would be. Every fae realm seems to have its own quirks and traps. I'd like to see more of this world.
This left me with the hope that our protagonists would save Ellantine, but... I’ve heard a sequel is planned, and I’m excited to see where the story goes next. Though admittedly, the sadist in me does love when authors build beautiful worlds only to threaten destroying them completely… so we’ll see 👀
That said, Blighted is very much a plot-driven fantasy. These are some of the most task-driven and focused protagonists I've seen in a while 😂. Though it offers a light thread of romance, most of it felt more like one-sided admiration on Melina’s part, so I wouldn’t go in expecting a heavily romance-focused story.
If, like me, you enjoy a sapphic fantasy adventure filled with enchanting worldbuilding, political tension, and a touch of mystery, Blighted deserves a spot on your TBR.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book
well i have to say this was a totally different read for me.... magic and blight....
the blight being something nasty that seems to kill people its a nasty way to die but where did it come from....
melina she is the daughter of a mage and has studied magic all her life
lily is the disgraced knight that was exiled... many rumours abound for why she was exiled but her arrival back in Ascolane with the tear has everyone running around....
lily faces the queen and is then told to go to winter court to take the tear to safety... its not what she wanted to hear as being half fae her relationship with her father and the fae there was hard but go she does with melina, raph and dom
but what awaits them neither of them are prepared for or what they learn.....
entertaining read... kept me glued as i didnt have a clue what was coming next.... but i cant wait to read the next book in this series
It is a beautifully immersive fantasy that blends magic, political intrigue, and emotional depth.
I loved how the story balances a fast moving, adventure with quieter moments of character development that make the journey feel grounded and personal.
The worldbuilding is rich without being overwhelming, and the atmosphere especially the creeping sense of a world under threat stays with you long after reading. The characters are engaging and well-matched, with a dynamic that grows naturally as they’re pushed through danger and uncertainty.
What I liked most is how the story doesn’t rely solely on action or magic systems, but instead builds real emotional weight behind every decision.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book surprised me in a good way. I enjoyed this author as it was my first by them. I love fantasy books and this one didn't disappoint.
The story itself is full of twists and an adventurous, high-stakes journey across realms with the different fae realms, especially the contrast between the high Fae and Under fae. it has wonderful character development and blends magic seamlessly into the story. Melina was the best with her being brave, curios and determined, while Lili was enjoyable with how she matured and and handled the different things. The relationship moves naturally rather then feeling forced or rushed.
Very engaging book that I would recommend even though it seems like there will be a sequel with the ending. I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
