Memories of a Free Range Life

Rate this book
Everyone comes to paradise with a dream—slower days, simpler living, sunsets and serenity. What they don’t expect is the chaos that comes with it.

In a small coastal town, life doesn’t follow rules. Power cuts out mid-sentence, animals wander in uninvited, plans fall apart daily, and “mañana” is less a promise than a philosophy. Between expats chasing reinvention, locals living on their own rhythm, and a bakery that refuses to behave, nothing works the way it should—and somehow, everything does.

Told with sharp humor and honest reflection, this is a story about what happens when you stop trying to control life and start living inside it. Messy, unpredictable, and unexpectedly beautiful.

Memories of a Free Range Life by Kris Maddox is definitely a five-star read. Not only is it charming, but it is also witty and entertaining. The author sets out to follow her dream of a slower, more relaxed “off grid” life abroad. But things don’t always go according to plan. One unexpected event follows another. It kept me reading well into the night, knowing there would be another adventure on the next page. This is a “must-read” for anyone contemplating an alternative lifestyle. This book does not romanticise the idea but gives an honest account of all it entails. It will also be enjoyable for those seeking an entertaining read.

Honest, thoughtful, & unexpectedly relatable...
a memoir about embracing the messiness of starting over.

In Memories of a Free Range Life, Kris Maddox shares an honest look at building a new life abroad, complete with culture shocks, uncertainty, and the everyday chaos that comes with it. Rather than romanticizing the experience, the book leans into the reality of what it means to start over... often with some pretty hilarious stories along the way.

What I appreciated most about this book was how real it felt. It doesn’t try to make starting over abroad seem perfect or glamorous—instead, it focuses on the small frustrations, unexpected moments, and adjustments that come with it. The writing is straightforward and easy to read, with bits of humor woven throughout that keep it feeling personal and grounded. Overall, it felt honest, relatable, and refreshingly unpolished in the best way.

I picked this up because I’ve been seriously thinking about starting over somewhere new, and I’m glad I did.

It doesn’t romanticize the idea the way a lot of books do. Instead, it shows the uncertainty, the small adjustments, and the moments where things don’t feel quite right. That honesty actually made it more helpful than anything overly inspirational.

It didn’t change my mind about wanting to make a move, but it definitely gave me a more grounded picture of what that might feel like.

I loved it—feels like I’m talking to my friend over coffee! Full of laughs, stories, painful lessons and a vision that hold it all together. The author did a really good job at articulating the driving force behind why someone would sell everything and start a new life in a tropical paradise they’ve never been to before. If that idea has ever crossed your mind, you’ll love this book too!
