Miles Away

Rate this book
The mafia couldn't kill him.
Prison couldn't break him.
Going home threatens to do both.

Miles Capadonno has made some mistakes. Once part of the Capadonno crime family, he took the fall for another member of the crime family who once tried to kill him. At age 17, they put a contract out on Miles' head for neglecting to complete a job. It was a matter of priority. Miles went to his dying mother's side instead of picking up stolen merchandise from the ship yard. When you're in with the Capadonno's, whether you're blood or sworn in, when they say jump you jump, when they say kill you kill. Ignoring an order is an offense of the highest degree. When they couldn't kill him, they let Miles take the fall for another Capadonno family member. Now 15 years later, Miles is being released. He is ready to put his past behind him. There's only one problem. There is still a contract on Miles' head. This time, Miles is man enough to collect on owed debts, and he will not back down from the family that stabbed him in the back.

Leticia "Letty" Alves is a saucy Latina and Miles' old high school girlfriend. She was only 16 when Miles was arrested, but she hasn't stopped wondering about the boy who charmed her all those years ago. Now working as a nurse for a home health agency, Letty's priorities are to take care of herself and her 18 month old son, Gabriel. But when Miles walks back into her life everything changes, and suddenly, the family that she had avoided all her life, is now breathing down her neck looking for Miles. Letty is no damsel in distress, though. She's a fighter, and she never backs down from a challenge.

Sparks fly when Miles and Letty reunite. Can they put their differences aside to become one again? Can Miles set down his pride and accept the help and love that Letty can provide? Will Letty get over her resentment over being left so long ago when Miles was arrested? Only readers know for sure.

Welcome to Carrion, New Jersey, where the Capadonno's call the shots. Miles was away for so long, but now the prodigal son has returned. One thing is for sure, the family business isn't ready for a bastard like him.

When I read the synopsis, I was intrigued. Unfortunately, it didn't totally work out for me. No tension like I hoped there would be. The book had potential, I just struggled with it. I felt no real connection to either of the characters nor in their relationship, and couldn’t sympathize with them at all. Also, I felt at times the author gave too much description. I felt as though much of the descriptive parts could have been done with fewer words.

I wish I could rate this higher and say that I obsessed over Mile and Letty's story. Sadly, I cannot. I thought their story was sweet. I loved Letty, she was strong and could keep her emotions in check.

The plot wasn't really unique, and I guess the story just flowed too smoothly. It's not a bad thing, not at all. I guess, to me, the story isn't really too special.Overall, it was a pleasant read.

This is a DNF at 61%. I feel bad DNF'ing and giving 1 star because I don't want to dump on an author. I give her props for writing a book- I would never attempt trying to write one. But this book didn't work. It didn't make much sense. There were too many characters and too much mafia talk. Also I think there was some confusion on how she wanted to portray her H and h. Let's start with Miles. Based on stuff we were told in the beginning of the book he was in love with Letty and planning to go to Princeton. He had just turned 18 and had been with Letty since he was 15. That makes me think Letty was probably his only sexual partner, but 17 years later and she makes him sound like a manwhore. He grew a beard in prison and mentions more than once that women love it? What women? He said this once in prison and once right after he was released. Was he getting conjugal visits from random OW that loved his beard? Who knows! His brother offers to take him to a strip club after his release but Miles says no- strip clubs hire strung out skinny chicks and he needs curves. How does he know who strip clubs hire? Was he frequenting them in high school when he had a steady girlfriend and getting good enough grades to go to Princeton? Doubtful! Then he says he is going to wrap himself around some curves. I believe he meant Letty, but when he sees Letty it is mentioned that she isn't a skinny teenager anymore. So did he guess that she had filled out or was he talking about someone else's curves? Later when they are making out he thinks to himself that she has the sexiest f*ck me eyes he has ever seen. Who else has looked at him that way? I figured Letty was the only one that ever gave him f*ck me eyes. So confusing! And Letty- she is a nurse in a small town and it seems she pretty much knows everyone in the town, but when she is telling Miles about her experience with men when he was in prison she says over the years she attracted attention from many men. Many rich, successful men. That doesn't even sound realistic- not in such a small town. I doubt she even came across that many different men in her day to day life. Too many things didn't make enough sense and it was a chore to continue. Also, Letty's son was 2 and alternately spoke like a toddler or 10 year old.

*** ARC kindly provided by the publisher Booktrope, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. ***

When I saw this book on NetGalley I immediately loved the cover and since I love a good mafia story the decision to request this one was easy. I hadn’t read anything from this author yet even though I already have the first two books in her ‘Breaking Black’ series on my Kindle.

This book brings us the story Miles and Letty. At 18 Miles has loved his Letty for 3 years already. His father and other mafia members don’t approve of him choosing loyalty towards his dying mother instead of the mafia. They set him up for a murder he didn’t commit. 17 years later Miles gets released from prison and wants 3 things. Justice, vengeance and his girl. But is the girl he once loved and didn’t hear from in 17 years still his girl? Will he be welcomed with open arms by his family? Who can he trust and who not? Will he get his justice?

I love a mafia book and wanted to love this one too but unfortunately this one didn’t work for me. What I love about mafia books is the suspense and darkness. I missed it in this book. Sure there is some suspense but I would have loved more.

Something that I found rather strange is that usually in mafia books the people cared about are in danger. Miles has a price on his head and instead of making sure Letty and her son are safe, they decide to go on a date. They bring Letty’s son to her father and guess what? They get kidnapped! The part on the kidnapping is rather short but the part on their date is very elaborate.

One big issue for me is that, excluding the epilogue and last Chapter, this book is for only a few days. The first day, the day Miles is released, is written on the first 55% of the book.

Something which was confusing was the constant switching between POV’s. I do love dual POV in books but this book constantly switched between POV’s. Not only for the main 2 characters but also some secondary characters. And additional to that most is written in third person POV but also some first person POV is in between for their thoughts.

I loved Letty and liked how sassy she was but I didn’t feel the chemistry between her and Miles. I also couldn’t really connect with them. There was too much written about secondary characters.

Something I did like was the playlist at the end of the book linked to different scenes.

I don’t like doing this but unfortunately I really didn’t like it and can only give 2 stars to this book. As I said I already have 2 books of this author on my Kindle and will definitely read them some day. The author writes very descriptive, which I like but this book just didn’t work for me but that is my personal opinion. And since all other ratings and reviews are much more positive I guess I’m alone in this so don’t let my review stop you from reading!!

DNF

I found I really struggled with the writing style. The constant changes from 3rd to 1st person POV (and it was every few lines/paragraphs) meant for me, it was a very disjointed reading experience. We would be in 3rd person POV and we would have Letty being described as doing something example "Letty looked up, Letty said..." etc, then suddenly change to 1st, and be in Letty's head with "I.." etc. And these 1st person POV snippets were meant to be us in the characters head at that time, but felt more like a total information dump at times, and was not at all smooth. We were meant to be in their head feeling and experiencing what they were thinking currently, but it was a very unnatural process, with how they were "talking" to us as a reader.

Not to mention the odd other POV from secondary characters that were added in randomly with no clear indication we had changed POV

This is a story of Miles who went to prison for a crime that he didn't commit. The blur was amazing! I was thrilled that I got the chance to read this book. I thought it will be full of tension and suspense and mystery! Unfortunately it didn't happen....So, what did it happen?

The idea of the story was really good! The plot was moving really slowly the first half of the book. Actually the first half of the book took place in a day! The book was mainly written from a dual POV and sometimes from the POV of the secondary characters. It was extremely confusing and after a point annoying to read the thoughts of the heroes. So, except from the POV, we got a glimpse of their inner thoughts which offered no additional information. There were also too many details about the secondary characters that also didn't offer any additional value to the book (detailed description of their looks, details of a past interaction with one of the heroes without any meaning, etc.)

The heroes were nice and hot. But that was all. I didn't feel their chemistry or their connection or anything. It was also disturbing for me that Miles was away for 17 years and he was acting like he still knew how Letty was thinking without having any contact with her for such a long period. Letty also was annoying in how fast she put her life in Miles hands' without having any idea about what was really going on.

I honestly believe that if the book was written in another style, even by the same author, it would have been fantastic. But that wasn't the case and I didn't really enjoy it.

Miles Away was refreshing, action packed and the right kind of mafia story I crave. Addison Kline did an amazing job bringing realism to a father hell bent on killing his son, using the criminal family to do his dirty work.

Prison couldn't break Miles, no matter how hard the separation from Letty was and the other inmates couldn't get the drop. Seventeen years is a long time to be locked up for a crime he didn't commit, but those wasted years were enough to get back at those that set him up. I loved this author's style of writing and the deadly tone she carries. So you're probably wondering why three stars instead of five?

1. Zero- would be given for romance. The storyline and events are the hook and keeps you glued, but the author glosses over the passion the scenes highly calls for.
2. Secondly was the transitioning of events, from when the scenes switched. Those were without warning and took a moment to figure out, huh what happened.
3. The lack of build up between father and son. Clearly there is hate. I thought there would be more of them trying to go after each other until there was nothing left. But the tone was passive, and others kept making the hit, or manipulating the play.

All in all this was a spectacular read. I hope to read more from this author in this particular theme as a mafia junkie I can't get enough. Happy reading!

This story was full of twists, and captivating. Smart, engaging and inventive, Miles' story knocked me out.
This one was my first from this author and definitely not my last. It was surprising and challenging at many levels.

This story about a man (Miles Capadonno) who was framed for murder for seventeen years was totally mind-blowing. Mafia runs in the family but not for him. Wanting not to be part of his father's business, he was planning to live with her high school sweetheart, Letty. One night changed everything, and BAM, it was the beginning of an intriguing, suspenseful and phenomenal story.

It was smartly written with twists and such incredible ability to make you doubt about everything and everyone. When you think you were on lead, be sure that the author knows how to play you until the end.

Addison Kline’s writing was masterful, with a story on a full speed mode and no time out! I won’t talk about more the plot because it would spoil all of it and trust me, you will enjoy the crazy ride!

Don't Forget the romance either, because this couple (Miles and Letty) are EPIC, with a love that conquers all.
Rough, raw, strong with his persistence to win his woman back and seek revenge. Letty is also a woman that won’t mess up with. She’s independent, sweet and so strong. Their chemistry was off the charts and moved me.

This book is definitely a top read. The story was written also with music as pivotal part of the book. I wanted to emphasize this point of this story. To my mind, it was increasing the intensity of the moment. My heart was racing throughout the story and I could only catch my breath at the end. So well played Addison Kline!Be sure, I am so gonna read the next ones of this series!!!

I'll start this by saying the overview was really interesting thus my wanting to read the novel. This book fell flat for me because there wasn't enough romance in the actual story. There was a lot of anger, fighting, and deception but maybe a few hints at romance. I'm all for having an actual story line and moving part but there just wasn't enough connection to the characters for me to thoroughly enjoy the novel. Sadly, this book is just 3 stars of not my cup of tea.

Miles Away is an amazing read. There is so much mystery and intrigue throughout the book. As a reader, I didn't know who to trust, who was good and who was bad because the characters all have different masks. It is also an emotional read that will cause you to think the bottom is going to fall out so many times. seriously couldn't put it down.

self note: h has a baby from H 's old friend (it was a one night stand) . .H wasn't upset and actually helps raise baby as his own. the fact that it was someone H knows or knew is what's bothering me. not that she moved on so much. I'll have to think about this one. for now it's not for me.

I received a copy via netgalley.

This is my first and last mafia book I'm ever going to read... For one I found it to be dramatically boring. I didn't care for any of the characters. They just didn't have that umpf they needed for me to love them. The storyline sure was at a decent pace, but all around it felt dragged on. Special mobster words were thrown around and sure it has a index for them but if your on kindle it's daunting trying to get to it to find out what the hell they're talking about. So yes first, last, I won't be coming back for more. Sorry.

Normally you find me giving the 5 stars for Addison's books but this one I just can't do it...I've been so excited to read this one for months and I guess expected more than what I just read... I'm a huge fan of mafia books, I love how they build up the suspense, wack a few guys who are the enemy(including torture) and protect the family. Sure they might find love along the way and that's all great. This one seriously lacked on the suspense for me. I found it boring and that's not normally how I would describe Addison's books. Normally she has me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens next, not this time however. I found it weird that Miles gets out a prison, has a hit on him immediately but only a few mobsters come at him..maybe I watch to many movies but I would think everybody and there mother would come out for that. I also find it weird how it goes from Miles wanting revenge on his brother to being ok with each other..How did this happen and why did he only punch him in the nose? I would have shot him dead for doing what he did. I really did like Miles and letty, especially Letty, its nice to see a bigger girls in books. I just thought there was a lot of holes that could have been more explained. I mean he just accepts that she has a baby and when doesn't even really confront like guy like I'd hoped he would. Also, why was the date more important than the kidnapping? I guess the mom in me didn't understand that, I would want to know and would more than likely cancel the date to find my kid. I know I'll probably get ripped apart for this but isn't a review my personal opinion and that's what I'm doing here.

I will admit, I thought about abandoning this book in the beginning, the background of mob histories was too much at some point, it felt like a history lesson. I am however, very happy that I stuck it out, because it turned into an amazing book. The end I figured out just before the reveal, but the impact because of Letty's emotions made it just as good as if I was surprised by it. This is a good story of love, greed, power, and family. Not all families are happy and look out for each other. I saw a lot of deception and lies in this story, but that is what made it so good. The love between Miles and Letty was strong enough to survive 17 years of separation, but when Miles returned home he fought for her and protected her and G with everything he had. He was a man of action, not words, and fought for those he loved and his family. After being framed by family, he had a hard time trusting people, but he survived many attempts on his life and never lost his drive or determination. He also never lost his love and loyalty for Letty, or the people that deserved it. He is a real man, and accepted G from the beginning where most men would have bailed, because he was not scared and knew what he wanted and accepted all that came with it. Great book, I am ready for the second book in the series. I am excited to see who it is about. I loved the song playlist for the specific scenes from the writer.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. Please enjoy!

Received an Arc for an honest review:
I love Mafia books and this book is no exception. Miles is 18. He and Letty have been together for 3 yrs and are making plans for their future. Bang, Bang, Bang! Not the sound you want to hear while your celebrating a birthday. Miles and Letty run like crazy but they cant out run the cops. BOOM! Miles is arrested and sent away for 17 yrs....That's all your going to get from me.....This book was fantastic.

As an avid mafia romance reader, this NetGalley reviewer is always pleased to receive an ARC in this genre. I have to admit, though I enjoyed the mafia plot, it was the delivery of the storyline itself I found myself struggling with at times. In fact, the hero's constant inner dialog at the beginning almost chased me away. It didn't last, however, and actualy served a purpose.

This was one of those rare romance books I found myself caring more about the family mob business and how it was going to turn out than the romance between the main couple. Actually, in both cases I found myself skimming through some of it just to get to the end. That is never a good sign. Why? Credibility issues...I’ll explain in a minute.

Let me first focus on what I liked. 1.) Miles unwavering love, devotion, and protectiveness for Letty before, during, and after his 17 year prison sentence. This hero is no tom cat player. Right after getting out of the joint, he tells his youngest brother there is no reason to be a shirt chasing manho. Simply find the right girl for you and stick with her. This guy always means what he says and says what he means. He immediately gets with Letty again. He doesn’t bat an eye regarding accepting Letty’s two year old son as his own, and he protects what is his. 2.) The interesting roles of some of the sub-characters: Landon, Knox, Dustin, and Sasha. 3.) There were quite a few twists and turns. Things were not always as they appeared. However, I did figure out Knox’s plan for Miles before he set it into motion.

Some distracting credibility issues I had were immediately after being the target of a hit this couple took Letty’s two year old to a park instead of all of them sequestering somewhere safe. Especially knowing a contract was active on Miles. Yeah, we were told he didn’t want to appear scared because that could get you dead. But, hey, being stupid will get you killed, too. Then after a second attempt on his life, they went off to enjoy themselves overnight at a casino/hotel leaving the toddler with Letty’s dad. Can you say easy target? Then they didn’t get overly concerned when Gramps didn’t answer their calls/texts. Throw in Letty’s words/actions seemed bizarre at times. She slapped a guy who she claimed wasn’t treating her like a lady. Then cursed at him and spat on the ground at his feet. What that supposed to be funny? Put it this way, she annoyed me at times.

So, my fellow mafia romance book-loving friends, this one was miles away from being one of the best mafia romances I’ve read this year. Granted I am extremely spoiled as I’ve read some amazingly spectacular ones by authors such as Bethany-Kris, Cora Reilly, Nancy Haviland, J.J. MacAvoy, etc. But it certainly wasn’t a bad read. I just think the writing style was off at times so could have been better.

P.S. Was it just me? But the book cover bothered me. The guy looks like he is going to tear off his own head or has something stuck in his hair. My least favorite book cover…ever.

BOOK REVIEW: 3,5 STARS

I’m gonna be completely honest with my review. I loved the gangster plot, the whole Capadonno Family thing was what kept me reading this book, it had some shocking moments that I didn’t see coming and that is one of the factors that makes a book great, and I’m sure there will be more to tell about this crime family. The relationship between Miles and his brothers was so cool and just like the mobster plot, these 4 brothers had so many aces under their sleeves. But…. That was all I liked about this book.

Sadly, there’s no romance at all in this book. Lety and Mile’s relationship was easy. They were in love when Miles was sent to jail and they were equally in love 17 years later when he was freed. No drama to add to this couple, not to mention the three times they had “sex” in this book, there was no explicit description at all, and that is a huge turn off for me.

Another aspect I liked about this book was all the story behind the crime families and how the Capadonno are now in charge of Carrion. But… I didn’t like the lack of realism in it. If it’s a gangster book, the way police reacts to the crimes should be realistic, but they weren’t.

And what really bothered me the most about this book was the writing style. There were so many POV written that it made it confusing, and the changes were so abrupt, one moment you were reading what one character was thinking or seeing, and the next sentence—there wasn’t even a change of paragraph, there was a description of what another character was feeling. UGH! It was annoying.

So, if I didn’t like so many things about this book, you must be wondering why I have 3,5 stars, right? Well, it was because the gangster story was awesome. I wanted to know why Miles was framed for a murder he didn’t commit and I wanted to see how he was going to get his revenge. When I was at 60% of the book I was so sure I didn’t want to read more books of the series—or by the author for that matter, but when I hit the 96% I was a complete mess, and that made me want to read more about the Capadonno siblings, because even the sisters, as crazy as they are, they deserve their stories.

NOTE: Please, know that I’m a romance/erotica/drama suck-up and if a book doesn’t have enough romance or explicit sex in it, it’s boring for me. So, you might love this book, so give it a try, and please let me know what you think about it.

This is book one in a new series by Addison Kline. I've honestly never read anything by this author before and was contacted on my blog to see if I'd like to read and review this book. Let me just tell you how GLAD I am that I said yes! I loved this one so much!!

This is Miles story...he was framed and thrown in jail for 17 years for a crime he didn't even commit! His girlfriend was with him when he was arrested and she never heard from him the whole time he was locked up. I was happy with the way Letty never gave up on him, never stopped loving him and was waiting for him. Now that's what I call love!!

"Letty was still his guiding light who had led Miles from the darkness more times than he would ever admit."

Miles is out for revenge against those who framed him, which who could blame the guy! Plus his father still had a hit out on him too and he didn't know who he could or couldn't trust except Letty. He knew she had his back and always would. After being reunited with Letty he would do anything to not lose her again, but there were things he had to take care of in order to make sure those he loves were safe.

“You have to know that… Letty.”
“What, Miles?”
“Everything I do now, is for you and G.”

This was a very intense read!! I never knew what was going to happen next!! It definitely kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time!! It was definitely one of those cant put it down books!! I had to keep reading to see what happened next!

The real question is will Miles survive to have his much deserved future with Letty? Who can he trust to be on his side? Will he end up trusting the right people or the wrong people and end up regretting it in the end?

This is a must read! I can't wait to read Knox's story next!

I really, really wanted to love this book.
I do usually enjoy Addison Kline's books and a good mafia story but this one did not work for me.
The good - the second half of the story was pretty good, it easily could have been told in 200 pages though.
I did like Miles and Letty, I just wish their story had existed over more than a few days.
For me it took over half the book to get my interest. The beginning is way too slow, and while attention to detail is usually good in a book in this case it was overkill.
I struggled to finish this book, honestly at about 30% I put it down and waited a day to come back to it. I did that twice and still the first half or more of the book just didn't get my attention. A story as long as this one should have had more suspense, more build up but sadly it was lacking for me.
As far as the length of the story, it is much too long for the climax once it finally comes, I just could not sit and read this straight through.
So in all I would give Miles Away 2-2.5 stars, this could have been an amazing book it just lacked the suspense and build up necessary to keep my interest.

I was about halfway through this book before I was fully immersed in the storyline. I'm not sure what I struggled with during the first half of the book, maybe I was adjusting to a different style of writing. Anyway by the end of the book I was hooked. Miles comes out of prison after 17 years inside, having being framed for murder by his own father at the age of 18. Meeting up again with his first and only love, Letty, together they take on the Carrion mob and the Brooklyn mob, all seem to be gunning for him, literally. I enjoyed all the POVs and fell hook, line and sinker for Miles and his brothers.

I received an ARC of Miles Away and I must warn you: Miles Capadonno will give your other book boyfriends & favorite characters a run for their money! Addison Kline may have discovered the perfect man! This book has so much: suspense, mystery, betrayal, love, lust, lies, and mafia ties. Once you start reading, you're easily sucked in. It's a read at one sitting, ignore the world until you reach the end kind of book; that will touch your emotions, shock, and awe you in ways both good & bad. This is the first Addison Kline book I've read, but I'll definitely be reading more of her work.

Omg, this book had me hooked from the first sentence. The raw in your face, grittiness of the story line had me happy, sad, mad as hell and just so in love with this book that I couldn't put it down! The chemistry and love between the characters had me thinking I was watching a TV series! This is truly a very must and excellent read! I will adding this book to my favorite list! Kudos to Mrs. Kline!

While reading this book I was constantly on the edge of my seat. I could have been watching a movie. The action, drama and mystery surrounding this crime family will keep you wanting to continue to read till the end. I had a hard time putting it down just to do actual things that must be done in the home. Very gripping, well written crime drama.
