She was a student of music as a performer at The Royal Academy of Music and at the Department of Musicology at the University of Aarhus, before she changed instrument and enrolled at the Danish School of Journalism, also based in her hometown of Aarhus. She spent a few years working for a daily newspaper, but by 1992 she was living with future husband, the late British author Philip Nicholson, in the Maltese island of Gozo, working as a freelance writer.
Eventually she began making a name for herself as the author of a string of well crafted short stories published in women's magazines in both Denmark and the other Nordic countries. Her first novel had three long time friends mourning the death of a fourth and facing a mysterious stranger. ‘The Free Women's Club' was published in 1999 to unanimous acclaim. In ‘Scirocco' (2000) and ‘Opium' (2001) she moved into the darker corners of family and marriage, and combined a fullgrown plot with an engaging dose of international suspense.
Then, in 2002, she introduced full time journalist and part time sleuth Dicte Svendsen in ‘Hidden Errors', a novel about a dead baby found in a creek in the middle of big city Aarhus. By the second and third book in the series, ‘Own Risk' (2004) and ‘Personal Damage' (2005), both author and heroine were well known and highly treasured in her homeland. ‘Next of Kin' was published in 2006, dramatically outselling the previous novels, and Elsebeth Egholm found herself published, or about to be published, in Germany, Holland, Sweden and Norway. Afterwards, in 2008, the novel 'Life and Limb' reached the bookshelves followed by 'Against All Odds' i 2009. 'Three Dog Night' was published i 2011.
Currently Elsebeth Egholm divides her time between living in Aarhus, as does Dicte Svendsen, and on the Maltese island of Gozo.

Með góðu eða illu er önnur bókin sem kemur út á íslensku um dönsku blaðakonuna Dicte Svendsen. Sú fyrri heitir Líf og limir og kom út í fyrra. Sú bók er reyndar fimmta í seríunni um Dicte en bækur númer 1-4 hafa ekki komið út á íslensku.
Ég var ekki mjög hrifin af þessari bók. Sagan var óspennandi og fyrirsjáanleg og ég er heldur ekki mjög hrifin af aðalpersónunni – henni Dicte. Dicte stjórnast af einhverjum barnalegum hvötum sem er ekki auðvelt að skýra. Hvort það sé þrá hennar eftir sannleikanum, eftir því að hafa rétt fyrir sér (og sanna það) eða bara hreinlega einhvers konar fífldirfska veit ég ekki svo gjörla. Hún virðist alla vega ekki hugsa um eigin (eða annarra) öryggi eða hagi. Hún bara gerir. Eftir tvær bækur held ég að ég sé komin með nóg af henni Dicte.
En það er einnig annað sem þessar bækur eiga sameiginlegt. Í báðum reynir höfundur að troða inn endalausum fjölda af samfélagslegum vandamálum, benda á þau og velta þeim fyrir sér, gjarnan fremur yfirborðslega. Í fyrri bókinni fannst mér þetta áhugavert, mér fannst gaman að bókin reyndi að taka þátt í samfélagslegri umræðu og fá lesandann til að hugsa. Í þessari bók var ég farin að rúlla augunum þegar hún benti á enn eitt samfélagslega vandamálið. Í tilraun sinni að reyna að gæða bókina einhverri dýpri merkingu hefur Egholm búið til leiðinlegan suðupott af yfirborðslegri umræðu. Ef hún hefði haldið sig við eitt eða tvö vandamál og fjallað um þau af alvöru þá hefði það gætt bókina merkingu. Þegar farið var að bera á fjórða og fimmta vandamálinu fór ég að upplifa það sem svo að Egholm héldi að meira væri betra. En það verður að segja að í þetta skipti á orðtakið „less is more“ vel við.
Ég get því ekki mælt með þessari bók. Ef norrænn krimmi er á matseðlinum þá væri þetta réttur sem ég myndi sleppa.

I never really got caught up in this story. It was somehow not really catchy or a mystery.

God solid krimi med et spændende og komplekst plot. Godt skruet sammen.

Første bog af Elsebeth er læst, nu må jeg i gang med serien i den rette rækkefølge.
Spændende bog, som foregår i det Østjyske, så mange af stederne er kendte.

Vold og magt er en rigtig god krimi, med en meget overraskende slutning.
Men jeg syntes det er synd at Rose, Anne og Ida Marie lidt er kørt ud på et side spor iforhold til de fire første bøger.
