Unwanted Significance
When race and ethnicity mean nothing to a man and woman in love-but everything to their families-everyone gets hurt.
In 1995, when Tyler Carson and Alana Adler meet, their chemistry is instant. He's a psychology professor. She's a linguist and musician. Both are 38. He is White. She is Black. Neither has made much time for serious relationships, until a train trip changes their trajectory.
But their growing passion, played out in atmospheric settings from Cape Cod to San Francisco and Montana to New York, is no match for the intergenerational forces working to tear them apart. In addition to Tyler's doting, manipulative mother and his long-lost father who reappears with a new identity, deeply buried secrets in Alana's family begin to emerge.
Ultimately, the unwanted significance of race, ethnicity, and a past they had nothing to do with test the limits of their love, creating unexpected futures for both.

Great story - horrible punctuation
I very much enjoyed this story. The characters were well developed.
The punctuation was horrid. There were at least fifty errors.

From the moment Tyler Carson and Alana Adler meet, I was invested in their story. Their connection feels genuine, and I found myself rooting for them every step of the way, even as the weight of family expectations and long-buried secrets threatened to pull them apart. Renée Ozburn does a beautiful job of reminding us that love is rarely just about two people - it's also shaped by the families, histories, and circumstances we inherit.
One of my favorite parts of the novel was the setting. Whether the story was in Cape Cod, New York, Montana, or San Francisco, each location was brought to life in a way that made me feel as though I was traveling alongside the characters. The settings added so much warmth and atmosphere, making each chapter feel immersive and memorable.
I also appreciated how richly drawn the characters were. Even the supporting cast felt real, with strengths, flaws, and motivations that made them more than just background figures. Their relationships with Tyler and Alana added emotional depth and made the story feel authentic.
At its heart, this is a thoughtful, moving novel about love, family, identity, and the unexpected ways the past continues to shape the present. It's a story that stays with you long after you've turned the last page, and one I'd happily recommend to readers who enjoy character-driven fiction with emotional depth and a strong sense of place.

Unwanted Significance by Renee Ozburn is a highly enjoyable novel of intrigue and romance. I was cheering Tyler and Alana on quickly as they met. The setting in the 1980’s made an enjoyable trip to the past, remembering some of the simpler, fewer technologies, such as landline phones and answering machines. The descriptions of the settings in the book - New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Montana kept my interest and conjured up the differences of the settings. I was taken to each place with the author’s details.
The descriptions from the intense romance and the racial family struggles made it identifiable to life, regardless of which era. I loved the book. I became anxious as the book ended because I was very invested in the outcome of the Tyler and Alana and the other characters in the story. I had a particular fondness for Cynthia, Alana’s closest friend, and her loyalty throughout. Everyone should have a friend who roots for you. And that’s what I did as I read this enjoyable book.
I highly recommend Unwanted Significance; it is a fast paced story with great romance and social issues that continue to be “significant” today.

Unwanted Significance is a beautifully layered story about the people who shape our lives—family we're born into, the friends who become family, lovers whose commitment is tested, and long-buried family ties that refuse to remain hidden. Every relationship feels authentic, carrying the messy complexities of trust, loyalty, forgiveness, and sacrifice. Above all, this is a story that believes in the power of true love—not as a fairy tale, but as something worth fighting for despite heartbreak, uncertainty, and the scars we all carry. That hope gives the novel its emotional heartbeat.
If you enjoy character-driven fiction that delves into the complexities of family, friendship, and enduring love, Unwanted Significance is well worth your time. It reminded me that the people who enter our lives—whether by blood, by chance, or by choice—often become the most significant part of our story.

Unwanted Significance by Renée Ozburn pulls readers into a raw, twisting journey alongside Alana and Tyler that keeps you eagerly turning the pages with every new chapter. The novel explores themes of family secrets, interracial love, and owning one's ethnicity and identity in the face of adversity.
Ozburn skillfully weaves these themes together in a way that feels authentic and thought-provoking, creating characters who are relatable and easy to root for - or against. Woven into the fabric of our lives are threads of prejudice, sewn in during our formative years, subtly or unsubtly, by parents, extended family, schoolmates, playmates, teachers and experiences. As we move into our 20s and 30s, hopefully, we discover and try to unravel them openly and honestly. They don’t dissolve easily. As I followed Renee Osburn’s brilliant crafting of dialogue and scene-setting, I realized that Alana and Tyler, despite their sincere love and openness for each other, still had to deal with not-so-subtle influences beyond their control. The choices we make, or choose not to make, have consequences. I’m reminded of a Swiss philosopher’s sentiment: “Life is short, and we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of those who travel the way with us. So be swift to love, and make haste to be kind.”

Unwanted Significance by Renée Ozburn, is a beautifully written, fast paced novel, full of twists and turns. I rooted for the protagonists, Tyler and Alana all the way, hoping their love affair would survive. As in life, things get complicated for the pair, especially since there are family secrets on both sides. Ozburn portrays their interracial relationship realistically and respectfully, avoiding stereotypes.
Not only is the story suspenseful, but it reveals nuggets of truth about human nature in all of its complexities. Characters in the novel remind me of people in my own life, people I enjoy spending time with! I recommend this novel to all readers: men and women, who enjoy a thought-provoking story filled with relatable characters, humor and warmth.

“Unwanted Significance”by Renée Ozburn is a beautiful novel that explores issues of race, religion, ethnicity, and family secrets. It’s love at first sight for Tyler and Alana when they meet on a train, but they agree to take things slow and see how things work out for them in a long-distance relationship since he lives in Chicago and she lives in San Francisco. It’s a no-brainer for them: it’s the real deal. They love each other and plan to get married.
But will their love be strong enough to get them through Tyler’s mother’s determination to pry them apart and Alana’s parents’ secrets they’d been holding onto their entire lives?
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. My opinions are my own.

I met author Renée Ozburn at a writers workshop, was attracted to the cover, and invited myself to read an advance copy and to review it. I devoured the book in PDF form and plan to pre-order it.
It’s love at first sight when a man and a woman in midlife meet on a train and begin a long distance courtship. But will other people’s prejudices, connivance, and secrets come between them? This is a searing story of deep love and sacrifice. To paraphrase something one of the author’s characters says, this is a story about a locked door and keys that might still fit. Sometimes in love, there comes a time to let go. What if you find you cannot?

July 4, 2026I found Unwanted Significance to be a compelling, multi-layered love story that demanded my full attention from start to finish. The characters were brought to life in real time through relatable dialogue and deftly crafted action beats. As the two lovers uncover the significance of the complicated family histories that shaped them, we are likewise offered a compelling storyline through which we can, if we choose, dig more deeply into the ways a global history of bigotry has shaped all of us. This fast-paced, page-turner would be a good read at the beach, on a rainy day, by a fire on a winter’s night.

October 7, 2026Ozburne’s book is quiet but the results are dynamic. Telling the story of a romance affected by conditions out of control takes an intimate insight. I grew impatient with both MCs at times, especially the man. It was as real as any relationship i have ever been a part of. As the author of a book about mixed race relationships, Mother of Orphans: The True and Curious Story of Irish Alice, a Colored Man’s Widow, i recommend this novel fir any reader who thinks getting close in to a person of a different culture is easy. It’s not.

A chance meeting. A simple hello starts a romance against the backdrop of generational family secrets, racism, anti-semitism and jazz. In her debut novel Renee Ozburn deftly weaves this complicated love story across the American landscape including San Francisco, Montana, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and New York City. And that’s the way it should be. After all, this is an American story beautifully written.

What this book did well was show how the choices of people in the past can impact the lives of those in the present. However, I found the relationship between Alana and Tyler quite boring and the pacing felt unbalanced. I actually would have liked this to be a slightly longer book with more time spent on developing characters and relationships. Overall I think it is a good concept but it could have used a bit more editing and proofreading.

AWESOME 💖💖💖
I can't remember a story that moved me so much. The depth of the storytelling was awesome. The secrets, lies and racism drew me in. I appreciated how the story transpired over the years and just a few months like many stories do. It waa refreshing for 2 people to find love in their late 30s. Great job Ms. Ozburn.

Good Book, Questionable Title
I really enjoyed reading this book. Too bad the title doesn't do the story justice. A big thank you to Goodreads for introducing me to a truly talented author.
