I… have no words. They have officially left my vicinity because when I tell you I am not only shocked, but dumbfounded, flabbergasted, utterly gobsmacked—Jessica Cantwell, what in the heck did you put in this book to make me obsessed with a blonde???
I went in thinking this was going to be some cutesy fun fantasy adventure, but noooo—you had to leave me utterly wrecked because when I tell you Tracy, a blonde, lives completely and utterly rent free in my head… I kid you not. I’m not kidding.
Ha. HA.
How’d you do that?? 👀
Alright, enough of my man (for now), back to the actual review that isn’t just me losing my mind over a fictional blonde.
This was actually really fun. I will admit, it took me a bit to fully settle in because, as is typical with fantasy, you have to get through the backstory, worldbuilding, and setup before everything clicks.
I think my main issue at the beginning was that I hadn’t read the previous trilogy. This is marketed as a spin-off you can start without reading the original series, so I jumped right in like “yeah I got this.”
I did NOT, in fact, got this.
I struggled quite a bit because there were a LOT of references and nods to the original series, and I was sitting there like 😐 ??? half the time. It wasn’t unbearable, but there was definitely a point before the halfway mark where I seriously considered pausing just to go read the original trilogy so I could stop feeling like I was missing inside jokes I wasn’t invited to.
But once we moved past most of the heavy referencing—and got more focused time with FMC Skylar and MMC Tracy—I was locked in.
Because suddenly I understood just enough to survive, and then the story grabbed me by the throat.
The worldbuilding? Actually so good. The magic system and lore are layered in a way that makes the world feel vivid and easy to visualize—like you’re genuinely walking through it while reading.
Tracy had me from the jump. The man is unfiltered, unserious, and completely unapologetic in the best way possible. My lungs still hurt from how much I was laughing.
“I’m the damsel in distress and I saved myself” had me on the floor because sir… you absolutely were the damsel who saved himself 🤣
Skylar was such a fun contrast—fierce, capable, and intense, while Tracy brings the humor and chaos. But what I really loved was that she wasn’t just a generic badass FMC; she actually had depth, layers, and emotional weight behind her strength. And she doesn’t exist just to balance Tracy’s chaos (even though their dynamic together?? elite).
Overall, I actually enjoyed this way more than I expected given how confused I was at the beginning. I do think having read the original trilogy first would’ve made it easier to follow, but even without that, I still had a great time.
But let’s be real.
This book slowly turned into me being personally victimized by Tracy’s existence.
Because once it clicked, I was no longer reading for plot—I was reading for HIM. For his commentary. For his ridiculous internal monologue. For his blonde nonsense.
I am not proud of this. And yet here we are.
Yeah… I’ll be back for him. Unfortunately. Against my will. Probably.
This book doesn’t just open a door to another world—it drags you through it by the collar and dares you to survive what’s waiting on the other side.
From the very first pages, A Web of Fire and Deceit spins a dark, glittering tapestry of myth, magic, and emotional wreckage. Jessica Cantwell takes Norse-inspired fantasy and laces it with fire, betrayal, and a romance that simmers like a volcano threatening to erupt at any moment.
Tracy is the kind of MMC who walks in carrying grief like a weapon—sharp, heavy, and impossible to ignore. His pain feels real, not just backstory filler, and it shapes every decision he makes. Watching him navigate prophecy, loss, and a destiny he never asked for? Addictive.
And then there’s Skylar—fierce, guarded, and absolutely unwilling to bend for anyone. She’s not here to be saved, and honestly, she doesn’t need to be. Her strength isn’t just in power, but in her resistance, her secrets, and the walls she’s built so high they practically scrape the ceiling of Hel itself.
Together? Pure combustion. 🔥 Their dynamic is a slow-burn feast of tension, mistrust, and razor-sharp banter. Every interaction feels like a chess match played with knives—intimate, dangerous, and impossible to look away from. The rivals-to-lovers arc is chef’s kiss, stretched to perfection without ever feeling dragged.
The world building is where this book really flexes. Hel isn’t just a setting—it breathes, it judges, it punishes. From the Phlegethon’s infernal edge to the looming dread of Tartarus, every location feels steeped in myth and consequence. You can practically feel the heat, the ash, the weight of every sin trailing behind the characters like shadows.
And the twists? Ruthless. Just when you think you understand the game, the board flips.
What truly elevates this story is the emotional undercurrent. Beneath the magic, monsters, and prophecy lies a story about trust—how fragile it is, how easily it fractures, and how dangerous it becomes when paired with desire.
If you love: ✨ Slow-burn tension that hurts so good ✨ Morally complex characters who don’t play nice ✨ Dark, immersive fantasy worlds with mythological depth ✨ Romance tangled in secrets, lies, and fate
…then this book will own you.
By the final pages, I was equal parts satisfied and emotionally wrecked—in the best way possible. And that ending? Let’s just say I will be clawing my way to book two like something freshly escaped from the Underworld.
I received this as an arc from the author and am leaving this review based on my own review of the story.
There’s something about A Web of Fire and Deceit that doesn’t just invite you into its world, it tests you while you’re there.
Set against the haunting, ever-shifting backdrop of the Underworld, this story blends mythological inspiration with a gritty, emotional edge that keeps everything feeling unpredictable. The journey itself is relentless. It is full of dangerous terrain, eerie creatures, and trials that feel as psychological as they are physical. It’s not just about getting from one place to another but about what the characters are forced to confront along the way.
At the center are the FMC Skylar and the MMC Tracy, who feel like two storms on a collision course. Skylar is guarded and sharp-edged, shaped by her past and unwilling to give trust freely. Tracy, on the other hand, carries the weight of responsibility and loss, driven by loyalty but clearly struggling with everything that comes with it. Their dynamic thrives on tension. There is attraction but it’s tangled up in suspicion, clashing motives, and the constant question of whether either of them can afford to let their guard down.
What stood out most to me was how layered the story feels. There’s the obvious mission to rescue, survive, and to unravel the mystery of the Book of the Dead. However beneath that is a steady current of secrets and shifting loyalties. Just when things seem clear, something changes, and you’re reminded that no one is fully transparent in this world.
The writing leans heavily into atmosphere, painting the Underworld as something vivid and oppressive without losing its sense of wonder. It is dark, but there are moments of connection, bits of humor, and glimpses of hope that balance out the heavier themes.
If you’re someone who enjoys fantasy that mixes high stakes with emotional tension, morally gray characters, and a romance that takes its time to unfold, this one delivers. It’s immersive, a little unsettling, and definitely the kind of book that leaves you curious about what’s waiting in Book 2!
I was honored to be able to ARC read A Web of Fire and Deceit by Jessica Cantwell, and this book completely pulled me into its dark, dangerous world from the very first page. If you love gothic fantasy romance filled with monsters, magic, secrets, and tension that keeps you flipping pages late into the night, this is absolutely one to add to your TBR.
This story follows Skylar, the FMC, who lives in the Underworld and is tasked by her father, Auberon with escorting Tracy and Nessie through its deadly depths after their friends, Poppy and Dmitry, who were pulled into a hole in the ground, which ended up being a portal to the Underworld. Tracy, the MMC, enters the Underworld with one mission: save his friends and destroy the Book of the Dead. But nothing in this story is ever as simple as it seems.
The journey through the Underworld was one of my favorite parts of the book. Jessica Cantwell created a dark, immersive atmosphere filled with terrifying creatures, deadly trials, prophecy, fire and shadow demons, and constant danger lurking around every corner. Every chapter revealed new secrets and twists that kept me fully invested.
The slow-burn rivals-to-lovers tension, with sharp banter, dangerous attraction, and trust issues. Everyone seemed to be hiding something, and you never fully knew who to trust.
This book perfectly blends fantasy adventure, romance, mystery, and darker gothic elements into a fast-paced and addictive read.
If you love: 🔥 Slow-burn romance 🖤 Gothic fantasy worlds ⚔️ Dangerous journeys & deadly trials 🐺 Shapeshifters, monsters, demons & magic ✨ Secrets, betrayal, and tension-filled banter 🌑 Morally gray vibes and high stakes
I received an advanced copy of this book. A Web of Fire and Deceit is an adult gothic romantasy set in the Underworld (Hel). A mix of Norse and Greek mythology with the authors own ideas create this masterful epic quest!
Tracy, our MMC, is a charming shapeshifter who is prophesied to walk between worlds. Tracy has bonds with his friends that have been forged through trials of their shared past. They are his found family that he would die to protect. At the beginning of the book, Tracy’s best friends are getting married when suddenly they are sucked into a portal…now Tracy must find them and the Book of the Dead while he is at it. No problem right?!
Skyler, our FMC, has been banished to the underworld and longs to be free again. She has many secrets and some secrets she is bound unable to say. She is no damsel in distress and would rather die than become one. She has no friends but a few family to rely on, she hopes.
They both have major trust issues between them but fate forces them together. One has the book and one has the key. Major slow-burn “‘Do it,’ she growled. Kiss her or strangle her-she wasn’t sure which one she meant. And in that moment, she didn’t care.”
This book is the first in The Legends of Yggdrasil series. It is a spinoff of The Realm Saga which is a Young Adult series. The author states that reading The Realm Saga first is not necessary to read A Web of Fire and Deceit but warns if you read The Realm Saga after this book, there will be spoilers.
Right from the beginning, I was swept into this enchanting, mythical world, where caring, stubborn, and fiercely loyal characters shine bright.
The author’s writing style beautifully brings every scene to life. The descriptions are so vivid that I felt completely immersed, as if I could see, touch, and even smell the world around me. It was the kind of story that pulls you so deeply into its pages that the real world fades away.
The character development is just as captivating as the world building. The tension between the main characters is expertly done, balancing their need and desire for each another with a lingering distrust and hidden secrets.
That slow burn enemies to lovers dynamic is perfectly executed, filled with an emotional push and pull that keeps you invested. Their separate missions intertwine in compelling ways, adding depth and intrigue to the story.
I also loved the array of wicked creatures, the constant sense of danger, and the unpredictability of what might happen next. Every turn brought new challenges, characters and surprises, making it impossible to look away.
This is a richly imagined fantasy filled with magic, adventure, intrigue, tension, and a romance that builds at just the right pace.
A Web of Fire and Deceit had a lot of elements that I typically enjoy in fantasy — political tension, layered world-building, and high-stakes conflict — but this ended up being more of a middle-of-the-road read for me overall.
My biggest struggle was with the beginning. I felt like I had been dropped directly into the middle of an ongoing story without enough context to fully understand the world, the relationships, or the importance of certain events. There’s a lot introduced very quickly, and it took me quite a while to feel grounded in what was happening. Because of that, I had a hard time connecting to the characters early on.
That being said, once the story found its footing, I started enjoying it more. The fantasy elements and intrigue were interesting, and there were moments where the tension really pulled me in. The author clearly created a detailed world with a larger story unfolding beneath the surface.
While I never became completely invested, I still found enough to enjoy to keep reading. I think readers who love being thrown headfirst into complex fantasy worlds may have a better experience with this one than I did. Overall, this was a decent read with solid ideas, but I personally needed a little more guidance and character connection at the start.
Thank You to the author Jessica Cantwell for the ARC copy of this book.
If you like epic style fantasy, with quests and a journey, this is for you! This story is filled with the world building level of the great epic novels where our characters go through all the possible dangers and fight to make it to the other side.
Our main FMC, Skylar, was definitely my favorite character. She was fierce, fueled by her past and looking to her future with that trace of female rage that makes her a force that is formidable and unforgettable.
Then we have our MMC Tracy, emotionally wounded, strong, a warrior without qualms to do the thins that need to be done. He keeps his secrets close and his heart closer.
Both demostrate a closed off demeanor, keeping secrets from one another and fueling their rivals to lovers story. The buildup is delicious and so well done.
The world building is done well, with an atmospheric feel that lingers throughout the whole book until the very end. Being set in the underworld you can imagine how eerie it can become at times. But also it gives us all we want! Trials, monsters, morally gray characters, action at every turn and a world we become obsessed with.
A Web of Fire and Deceit by Jessica Cantwell has been one of those books that kept me company during some genuinely hard days. I live with chronic illness and chronic pain and a good book has always been my best distraction, and this one delivered when I needed it most. This is a fantasy romance set in Hel…actual Hel…where Tracy is on a mission to rescue his best friends and Skylar is supposed to be his guide, except they both have secrets tied to the same object and neither one is being fully honest about it. The tension between them builds so gradually you almost don’t notice how deep in you are until you absolutely cannot put the book down. There are quieter emotional moments tucked in that hit harder than the big plot beats and I love that. Cantwell’s storytelling has real momentum: the plot keeps moving, the creatures are genuinely creepy, and there’s a title drop mid-book that earns every bit of its weight. Fair warning, this spins off from a YA series and you’ll occasionally feel like you missed some inside context, so reading that first would probably help. By the time this posts I’ll have finished it, and I already know I’ll be waiting impatiently for book two. Overall: 5/5 stars Spice: Explicit 4/5 flames

This was an ARC read and a strong 4.5 star read for me. I really enjoyed the world, the tension, and getting pulled into the story, and I’m excited to see where the series goes next.
The atmosphere pulled me in right away. The Underworld setting, the magic, the prophecy, it all felt immersive and easy to picture, like I was right there with them. I love when a book does that and this one really did.
The slow burn enemies to lovers was exactly what I wanted. There’s tension from the start, mistrust on both sides, and that constant push and pull where you know something is coming but it takes its time getting there. It wasn’t rushed and it made everything hit harder.
Both characters are carrying secrets, and I liked how neither of them fully gives in. It keeps the dynamic sharp the entire time.
And the ending… without saying anything, you start to realize things that shift everything. There was something bigger building there, and I’m really curious to see where that goes in the next book.
I received an ARC of this book from the author and I am so happy I did! It releases on May 18th!!! I loved the style of writing as it was different from the high fantasy books that I normally read. Playful, irreverent, sexy banter, and underworld vibes. Yes, this is not a book for the youth. Yes, this is a book for me! The FMC is morally grey but totally lovable. The family bonds are complicated and interesting. The side characters are juicy and mysterious, Ashwin - I love you. There are disgusting monsters (don’t be eating like I was when you see the word basilisk), alluring lands, intense fight scenes, a slow burn attraction that leaves you wanting so much more (thank God there are more books coming!) Some of the scenes, the way they were described…I would love to see in a movie. The descriptions are so so good! I’ll be thinking about this one for a while. Book 2 can’t come soon enough.
Note: This is a spinoff tale from an original YA trilogy. I definitely have to go back and read those now. I wasn’t lost at all but I’m left wanting to find out how some of these characters came together and became found family. They’re so solid.

I was honored to be selected as an ARC reader for A Web of Fire and Deceit by Jessica Cantwell—and wow, where do I even begin?
The level of detail in this book is incredible. Cantwell creates such a vivid, immersive world that it’s impossible not to feel completely pulled in. Every scene is richly described, making it easy to picture the setting and truly experience the story alongside the characters.
This is a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romantasy that keeps you guessing. Just when you think you’ve figured out a character or where the story is heading, something unexpected happens and pulls you even deeper in. The journey through the underworld is especially gripping—there were definitely moments that had me on the edge of my seat.
And the creatures? So imaginative… and honestly, downright creepy in the best way.
Overall, this is a beautifully written story that I’d absolutely recommend adding to your TBR—especially if you love fantasy or romantasy with tension, twists, and immersive world-building.
I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Honestly… I basically stalked Jessica Cantwell for this ARC because the premise sounded THAT good, and I’m so glad I did.
A Web of Fire and Deceit completely pulled me in. I was genuinely impressed by the writing, especially for the start of a series. This romantasy blends magic, spice, and Norse mythology together in a way that felt immersive and addictive from the start. The world, the tension, and the character dynamics kept me invested the entire time.
The characters were easily one of my favorite parts. I loved watching their relationships develop, and the slow burn romance had me fully seated the whole time. Add in multiple badass female characters who actually feel strong, layered, and memorable? Immediate win for me.
The plot kept unfolding in ways that made it hard to put down, and by the end I was already desperate for the next book. Jessica Cantwell absolutely has me invested in this series now, and I cannot wait to continue it.
First I would like to thank the author for trusting me to be apart of her ARC team!! I can’t thank you enough and I appreciate your trust!!
I enjoyed this book immensely!!! From the start of the book I was hooked!! This is a branch off of the author’s YA trilogy series. “The Realm Saga” but can be read as a stand alone. I have already started the YA series so I was familiar with the characters and the world.
I absolutely LOVE Tracy (MMC)!! He was my favorite in the YA series and is still my favorite in this series. I love the relationship he has with his friends who are more family than friends!! The banter between him and Skyler (FMC) and him and Nessie are top tier!!
This is a true slow burn with on page spice that leaves you yearning for more. I can’t wait for the second book to see where the relationship goes!!!
🔥 - Slow burn 🥊 - Rivals to Lovers 🗺️ - World Building 🗡️ - Dangerous Journey 🧌 - Monster, Demons 🕸️ - Dreadrick - you will have to read to find out!
I received an Advanced Reader copy of A Web Of Fire And Deceit directly from the Author. I am writing this review strictly unbiased and free from any and all spoilers. Just my feelings on the storyline, characters, and writing. I really enjoyed the story building and the adventures my imagination took me on as I was reading this book. The writing is vivid and can really spark your imagination. *I literally felt as though the story was playing out in my head. My imagination is a bit hard to invoke so I really love this book. This book takes you for quite the ride and gives you all the feels. It keeps you submerged and I found it hard to take breaks in between reading. I loved taking a mental trip to another time, place, and dimension. What a wonderful thrilling escape from reality. 10/10. My only suggestion as a reader would be, Read book 1 first. Although it isnt necessary I feel like it would give readers a bit of context on some things. What a fabulous read!
This book pulled me in fast and refused to let go. A Web of Fire and Deceit delivers dark fantasy, mythology, betrayal, and slow-burn tension wrapped into one addictive story. The world building felt immersive without being overwhelming, and the emotional depth hit harder than I expected. Tracy and Skylar’s dynamic was filled with distrust, banter, and chemistry that kept me turning pages long past bedtime.
The rivals-to-lovers tension was done so well, and the twists genuinely kept me guessing. I especially loved the darker atmosphere and mythological elements woven throughout the story. It’s intense, emotional, and full of characters who feel messy in the best way.
If you love morally gray characters, dangerous attraction, layered fantasy worlds, and romance tangled up in secrets and fate, this one deserves a spot on your TBR. And that ending? Absolutely rude. I need book two immediately.
Review of an advanced copy received from the author.
I really enjoyed this book. It takes you to the underworld for amazing adventures of Tracy (MMC) and Skylar (MFC) and friends. I loved the different personalities of the characters. Nessie especially. Full of monsters, shape shifters and beings of lore. The cutest little fuzzball companion! The descriptions of the different lands of the underworld were phenomenal. It made you feel like you were there.
This book sucks you in from the get go and keeps you hooked until the end.
It is a off shoot of her YA Realm series, but you can read A Web of Fire and Deceit without reading Realm. The character back stories gave me just enough to make me very interested in the rest of the story, so I do plan on reading the YA series.
Thank you, Jessica Cantwell, for the opportunity to read your book! I look forward to book 2.
I was honored to receive an advanced reader copy from the author.
2 prophecies, 1 book and an intense journey.
Tracy, our MMC is at his best friend's wedding, when he and his bride fall through a sinkhole. He's then told it's time to fulfill his purpose and rescue his friends along the way. His journey begins in Hel, the underworld, where he meets our FMC Skylar and her father. Who have their own prophecy as well as a curse they're looking to break to get out of Hel. Skylar joins Tracy to find his friends, keeping their own secrets close and an even closer eye on their fellow travelers.
The immediate forced proximity creates the most delicious tension for our MCs, which gets drawn out for a wonderful slow burn! The spice hits and none of it is for the sake of having spice.
I am very curious to see where the story goes next!
I was given the opportunity to read an ARC of "A Web of Fire and Deceit" and I am writing this review voluntariky. This is a slow-burn, enemies to lovers romantasy that comes out on May 18. The story is compelling and difficult to put down - I ate it up! The characters are secretive, deceiptful and skeptical but also heroic, comical, likeable and supportive. The established relationships are sweet and familiar but also fallible. The descriptive writing and world building is stunning and impressive. And the Creatures!!!! The creatures are imaginative and sometimes terrifying. The reader is never quite sure where the next betrayal will come from or what secret will be divulged. Just when one world is conquered, another one is introduced.
This book completely pulled me into its dark fantasy world filled with secrets, betrayal, mythology, and emotional tension. Jessica Cantwell created characters that felt layered, flawed, and impossible not to root for.
The slow-burn chemistry between Skylar and Tracy kept me hooked the entire time, and the mix of danger, magic, and hidden truths made it hard to put down. Every chapter added more tension, twists, and emotional depth that left me needing more by the end.
If you love dark fantasy romance with morally gray energy, emotional stakes, and immersive world building, this one deserves a spot on your TBR.
Thank you, Jessica Cantwell, for writing such an amazing story and for the ARC opportunity!
A Web of Fire and Deceit is a fantastic read that delivers a gripping mix of dangerous secrets and intense chemistry. The world-building is deeply atmospheric, kept me turning pages long into the night .The absolute highlight of this book is the dynamic between the main characters. The banter is sharp, the tension is delicious, and the slow-burn romance feels entirely earned. Every character has hidden motives, making the "web of deceit" incredibly fun to untangle. My only minor critique is that the pacing slowed down slightly in the middle, but the explosive finale more than made up for it.If you love fantasy romance filled with clever twists, powerful magic, and high stakes, this is absolutely worth adding to your reading list!
A Web of Fire and Deceit pulls you in from the very beginning by weaving myth, magic, and fantasy. The world building through this book vividly paints the picture of each location without being overly cumbersome or taking away from the story. This is a slow burn, enemies to lovers romantasy that needs to be added to your TBR ASAP!
We follow our FMC, Skylar, who lives in Hel, and our MMC Tracey who she is tasked with guiding through the Underworld. The twists and turns that we experience throughout the book keeps you hooked and wanting to learn about the secrets that are being kept keeps you reading late into the night.
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read her book.
This book literally pulled me in, if you like fantasy this book is for you. Be prepared to not want to put it down. I have no words for what this book did to me. I was expecting a cute fantasy but it pulled me in to another world. This book has the myth, magic and all the emotional wreckage to go with it. The book is filled with dangerous terrain, eerie creatures, and trials that feel as psychological as they are physical. I enjoyed the world building level where the characters go through all the possible dangers and fight to make it to the other side.
I had the privilege of being an ARC reader of A Web of Fire and Deceit. This is an enemies to lovers slow burn fantasy romance! And did it deliver! This book has so many twists that you never see coming! Talk about tension and banter! Absolute chef’s kiss!! The author did such an amazing job creating a world that sucks you right in! Sprinkle in magic and creatures and portals!! Such a great read!
I was chosen to read this as an ARC read and feel honored to do so.
A web of fire and deceit is very well written through I struggled in the beginning to connect to the characters. I felt as though I came in the middle of a story (realized that it was a spin off and that makes sense). However once things started happening I was pulled in more and couldn’t put it down.
Highly recommend this book if you enjoy fantasy, slow burns, gothic fantasy and things not as they seem.
I’m so grateful to have had the privilege of reading A Web of Fire and Deceit. This story was packed with intrigue, betrayal, emotional tension, and beautifully woven secrets that kept me invested from beginning to end. The author created a world that felt vivid and dangerous, while the characters carried so much depth and complexity. I genuinely couldn’t predict where the story was heading, and that made the experience even more enjoyable. Definitely a memorable fantasy read for me.
Web of Fire and Deceit is a captivating dark Romantasy. weaving together intricate world-building, compelling magic systems, and richly developed characters. From the very first pages, the story immerses you in a vivid, layered world that feels both expansive and carefully crafted that add real depth to the narrative. I also love a book with a good shadowdady and Ashwin was great.
I enjoyed the story and the world building for this book. However I did struggle at the start to follow what was going on and who was who. I think if I had read other books prior maybe this would have been easier to follow.
Overall it was an enjoyable story and the characters had good connections that build over time.
This book took off from the first sentence to the very last. Jessica kept me guessing at every twist and turn. The story starts off at a wedding where the bride and groom disappear into the ground. The MMC goes to the underworld to retrieve his friends, teams up with the FMC and the journey begins to find Poppy and Dimitri. Loved this story. I can’t way to see what happens in book 2.
