For her heart, he’s ready to make a delayed play.

For three years, I’ve had one rule: prove every misogynist in major league baseball that I can do it all.

It’s the ultimate boys' club, and staying on top means keeping my guard up and my armor locked tight. But now that the off-season is finally here, I’m ready for a desperate break: no PR crises, no media drama, and absolute freedom on a quiet island escape.

Until Ben Weber walks into my paradise.

As the manager for the Erie City Hawks, Ben is everything I should avoid. He’s older, completely off-limits, and sees through the mask I wear for the world. For years, he’s been my friend and co-worker, nothing more than a lingering crush. However, when my vacation plans fall to pieces, he steps in to rescue me—and as much as I know I should say no, I can't resist taking him up on it.

Now trapped in the same villa, avoiding him is impossible. Every passing day strips away another defense, reminding me of everything I’ve sacrificed for my career. On this beach, a little harmless flirtation feels safe. But as we edge closer to crossing the line, the reality waiting for us back home starts to blur.

Falling for Ben could destroy my entire reputation. But when the vacation ends, I need to decide: play it safe to protect my career, or risk it all for the delayed play?

Years of quiet attraction, a vacation, and forced proximity made this such an easy romance to sink into.

Melanie and Ben had chemistry from the start, and their history made the transition from friends with lingering feelings to something more feel natural and satisfying.

Melanie’s determination to succeed in a male-dominated industry was one of my favorite parts of her character, especially seeing her slowly realize that letting Ben in didn’t mean giving up the independence she had fought so hard for. Ben’s patient, supportive nature and years of pining made him such a good match for her, and I was very happy to finally see him get his chance.

The shorter format kept things moving, while still giving their relationship enough room for the emotional side to shine alongside the banter and spice.

A fun sports romance with strong chemistry, a devoted hero, and a satisfying payoff that made this a lovely addition to the series.

These two were so meant to be. Ben and Mel were so great. Her having a crush on him but him being older and also the manager of the team, makes him off limits. She was so excited for her getaway and then it all fell apart. So when Ben invited her, she was hesitant but thought what the heck. These two were fire. The spice between them was so hot. I loved the way they connected. There was definitely something that had been slow burning between the two of them, even if they didn’t realize it. This was such a great novella. I absolutely loved it.

An older baseball manager, a fiercely independent career woman, and an unexpected vacation together? OH, WE'RE ABOUT TO MAKE SOME QUESTIONABLE HR DECISIONS. 😂⚾
Mel has spent years proving she belongs in a man's world, and I LOVED that Ben never tried to dim her shine. This man has been quietly pining for her while she keeps her emotional walls reinforced with concrete. SIR, YOUR PATIENCE IS IMPRESSIVE. 😭
The forced proximity, years of bottled-up attraction, and delicious spice made this such a fun little escape. And a man who wants to stand BESIDE his woman instead of getting in her way? We love to see it.

4.5!

Ben and Mel's story was so fun to read. A lil short and spicy novella!

Ben had been pining after Mel for years, and after getting stuck on vacation together, Mel's plans change. Being stuck together for a week, they have fun and pretend, learning more about each other as the days go by.

Mel is a strong, independent bad a** b*****. She allows herself to succumb to the fun and unknown, and we love that.

This was such a fun read and I loved hearing their story!

KC Brooks has been one of my favorite authors for a couple years now. She pulled me in with her storytelling ability and talent at capturing the human experience within the pages of her books. Delayed Play is book 3.5 in the Erie City Hawks series and what a novella it is! She is the author who pushes herself with every new book she writes. She holds herself to a very high standard and won’t settle for anything less than perfection.

Mel has worked hard to prove herself in a field where men dominate. She is strong, hard working, and fierce. It is easy to understand why she puts her guard up and has worked so hard to not show any type of vulnerability in order for people to not take advantage of her. I love seeing women dominating in a world where men look down on them. Even more so when she rises above it all to prove over and over again that she belongs there.

Ben sees Mel from the very beginning. He sees her dedicated work ethic, her drive, and where she struggles (even if she doesn’t want to admit to it). He sees her so much that while he is gruff with almost everyone else, he has a soft spot for her which has grown into admiration and attraction. When a vacation pushes them together without ways to escape, he finally sees his chance at laying it all on the line.

If you want strong FMCs and MMCs who are down bad for their women, KC is the author for you. While they start out strong and capable, KC helps her characters and her readers realize you can want someone without it costing you everything you have worked for. The desire that flows between Mel and Ben is organic and realistic. As they both trust each other to give into their feelings, this book conveys how important it is to stand next to each other.

Another wonderful story by KC that has me salivating for the next one!

As always, review any author notes before reading.

ARC Review

Delayed Play by K.C. Brooks is exactly the kind of romance I didn’t know I needed, sexy, suspenseful, and packed with the kind of slow-burn emotional unraveling that makes you read one more chapter and then suddenly it’s 2 a.m.

From the jump, Mel is all steel and strategy someone who’s spent years proving herself in a world that tries to make her prove she doesn’t belong. I loved how clearly her motivations are laid out staying on top means armor, guard up, no room for vulnerability, and definitely no room for complications. That makes the arrival of Ben Weber feel less like a romantic meet cute and more like a controlled detonation.

Ben? He’s older, off limits, and best of all he actually sees her. Not the polished public version. Not the mask. The real person underneath. And the fact that he’s been in her orbit for years, friend, co-worker lingering crush territory adds this delicious layer of intimacy before anything even gets physical.

The vacation escape setting works perfectly for the story. It’s quiet, isolated, and slightly lawless in the best way, so the heroine’s carefully maintained boundaries start cracking day by day. Brooks does an impressive job of keeping the tension believable: their chemistry isn’t just hot, it’s rooted in history, trust, and the slow removal of defenses. There’s something so satisfying about watching her realize she can want someone without it automatically costing her everything.

And the conflict? Oh, it’s good. It’s not just career vs feelings. It’s reputation vs authenticity, safety vs risk, and whether she’s allowed to be a whole person when her whole life has been built around being untouchable.

A fantastic sports romance with a slow burn, strong character work, and a payoff that feels worth every moment of restraint. If you love workplace, friend to crush dynamics, older-off-limits tension, heroines with goals, grit, and a backbone a delayed play that makes sense for the theme and the emotions then grab Delayed Play. I’m officially adding K.C. Brooks to my auto-buy list. 💛

I love a good story from K.C. Brooks and this one didn't disappoint!

I'm always here for a woman who refuses to let a male-dominated industry tell her she doesn't belong. And there's something about a man who has been quietly pining for years and finally gets his chance.

Delayed Play was such a fun addition to the Erie City Hawks series! Melanie has spent years proving that she DOES belong in a male-dominated world, building up walls and refusing to give anyone a reason to doubt her. Her strength wasn't just about being tough. She was ambitious, capable and fiercely protective of the career she had worked so hard to build.

And then we have Ben. The man has been watching her, admiring her and quietly carrying a torch for her while respecting the line between them. He doesn't need to be flashy about how he feels because you can just tell how much he cares by the way he shows up for her. The show-up king.

Throw these two into a vacation villa together with years of friendship, a lingering crush and absolutely nowhere to hide... the lines start to blur. The forced proximity and vacation setting made for some amazing tension and banter, but overall, I loved the heart underneath it all. Melanie has spent so much time believing that vulnerability could cost her everything. When she realizes that letting someone in doesn't mean giving up the woman she's worked so hard to become, she truly becomes her own.

And getting to see Ben finally get his happily ever after? FINALLY!

If you're looking for a quick sports romance with an accomplished, strong FMC and an older MMC who's been down bad for her for a while, finally figuring each other out... Delayed Play belongs on your TBR.

Thank you to K.C. and Luna Literary for this ARC opportunity.

KC Brooks is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors, and I have the Erie City Hawks series to thank for that! Every time I pick up one of these books, I know I'm going to get a story that pulls me in, and Delayed Play was no exception.

Delayed Play is an Erie City Hawks novella, and even though it is a shorter and quicker read, it still packed enough into the story to earn 4⭐️ from me.

This story follows Ben, the coach of the Hawks, and Melanie, who is responsible for keeping the team in line and making sure that when someone steps out of line, the story is spun the way the team needs it to be. During the offseason, Melanie books a trip to Turks and Caicos, hoping for a little time away, but when she arrives at the hotel, she discovers that her reservation has been lost.

Luckily for Melanie, Ben is there to come to her rescue. And the best part? Ben has secretly been pining after Melanie for years. 👀

I loved watching these two finally get the chance to explore what had been building between them. The forced proximity gave them the perfect opportunity to get to know each other outside of the team, and I really enjoyed seeing their relationship develop.

One of my favorite things about this novella was getting to see Ben have his own happily ever after. He may not be one of the players on the team, but he has been such an important part of the Hawks, so it was nice to see him get his moment. And I especially loved that his HEA was with someone we've already met in the previous books!

This is a forced proximity, vacation romance that is perfect for anyone who loves a quick, fun read with plenty of chemistry. While you could probably pick this one up on its own, I definitely recommend reading the rest of the Erie City Hawks series so you can fully appreciate all the characters and connections.

KC Brooks has definitely earned a spot on my must-read list, and I cannot wait to see what comes next for the Erie City Hawks!

Thank you to KC Brooks and Luna Literary for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. I truly appreciate the chance to continue reading about the Erie City Hawks, and I can't wait to see what comes next!

Melanie and Ben’s Turks & Caicos vacation romance is the kind of sun drenched, heart opening escape that reminds you why taking a chance can change everything.

Melanie (32) is fiercely independent, devoted to her job with the Hawks, and raised by a mom and grandma who nudge her toward risks she rarely lets herself take. Ben (43) is the Hawk’s manager who’s been quietly in love with her for three years. He falls first and falls harder, he’s even willing to sacrifice for her without hesitation because he knows how hard she’s fought to be where she is. Melanie’s feelings have been there too, steady and unspoken, waiting for the right moment. Ben steadies her by standing beside her as an equal willing to always put her and their relationship first.

“Nah, baby. That was us—together. There’s nothing better.”

Their friendship is strong, their careers matter, and that makes their shift from almost something to everything feel natural and deeply satisfying. I love the chemistry between these two! Ben knows when to let Melanie take the reins, she knows how to ask for what she wants, and he is more than happy to give it to her. This man loves to please ;)

Delayed Play is a short, warm, spicy vacation novella about choosing connection even when it scares you, and how sometimes love is worth the leap.

A huge thank you K.C. Brooks and Luna Literary for the early copy!

I loved this novella! Such a great way to expand upon an already awesome series. I loved the forced proximity and sharing one room situation when Melanie’s vacation plans go wrong and Ben steps in with his spare bed… wink wink. I loved the setup and it had me all giddy with the possibilities.

It was very clear from the beginning that Ben had been harboring feelings for Melanie for a while, and Melanie definitely had a crush on him too. But with him being the manager of the baseball team she works for, she doesn’t think she can really give in because she’s worked so hard to prove herself as a woman in a man’s world and can’t afford to mess any of that up. However, I knew they would be so good together despite the obstacles and I was right!

I LOVED their chemistry! It was there from the very beginning, and I loved the way Ben supported her and stood up for her, even when she had no idea he was doing it. 🥹

I love baseball romances, and I also loved that Melanie is Korean! I recognized some of the phrases and nicknames because my husband is Korean, so I always love seeing that representation in books. ❤️

Such a fun, sweet, spicy little novella, and I loved the way it ended! Just so good! Check out the rest of the Erie City Hawks series ASAP.

Thank you to K.C. Brooks for the eARC of this book.

Benny Ben Ben! I was so excited to see the Manager of the Erie City Hawks have his own story. He's known to be a bit of a grump, but finally learning not only his career background but also how he's been pining after Melanie for years... it all makes sense lol.

What I didn't expect was this to be a vacation romance between two co-workers HAHA. I honestly thought it would be centered around baseball like the rest of the series. However, the Hawks are on a little break and both Manager Ben and PR Melanie have decided to vacation in Turks and Caicos... without the other being aware of their plans. But fate has a funny way of throwing two people together and the resort was definitely involved in Melanie and Ben sharing a villa.

I liked Ben and Melanie! The story is short and sweet and spicy. Would I call it instalove? Yes... No? Both had crushes on the other prior to this getaway but never acted on it but the island definitely allowed them to act on those desires. I really enjoyed the story and while I'm normally one for tension and longing, I actually enjoyed how fast these two moved together. I think knowing they'd worked together for years helped but I wanted that instant connection and KC delivered!

Such a gorgeous novella
I loved this short steamy novella which is part of the Erie City Hawks world.
This one has baseball Manager Ben finally getting the woman he has coveted for years, the lovely Mel who is head of PR for the Hawks.
Meeting unexpectedly in the same hotel whilst on vacation, a problem with her accommodation has Ben offering her his extra room in his villa.
With both of them spending so much time together their feelings they have for each other becomes hard to hide.
I really loved this story, their history together plus Mel’s mother and grandmother were also a fun part of the story.
Ben was such a teddy bear with her, but not afraid to let Mel know just how much he wants and desires her.
Mel was career driven but once she let her guard down she was all in.
This was a holiday romance that became so much more, it was steamy and fun but also serious once they had to go back and work out their job situation.
For a short novella it sure did keep me engaged and ended beautifully.
I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
Thank you K. C. Brooks and Luna Literary for the opportunity to read this gifted copy of which all opinions are my own.

Learning about their history
Mel's mom and Halmeoni
Women in sports rep
He stands up for her

This was a fun, spicy addition to the Eire City Hawks Series and was the perfect end of summer vacation novella. Benny is the GM of the Hawks and Melanie is the Communications Director. I did not expect Ben to be so swoony, but it was apparent he held feelings for Mel for years. Mel was a strong, independent woman who was focused on her career and working hard to prove herself in a male dominated field. I love how they took a chance on each other and got their HEA! If you are looking for a baseball novella with the perfect blend of sweet and spic, check this one out!!

When a vacation trip goes wrong and the only person who can help her is the one guy she's been trying to avoid... things begin to heat up. Melanie is the PR manager for the baseball team and Ben is the older manager of the team. Melanie has worked hard and she's been in desperate need for this dream vacation only to find out they misbooked her room and now she doesn't have a place to stay...until her coworker, and her forbidden crush, the completely off limits older manager of the team, Ben, offers her to stay in his place. Ben has a secret, he's been in love with her for so long and now they're both trapped together in paradise. This was such a fantastic romance read, it's equal parts vacation read and yearning romance! It was such a fun book to get into and the characters had wonderful chemistry. If you like a workplace romance, if you like a vacation read, this is absolutely a great one to read!

This was a fun one! Melanie’s vacation didn’t start off on the best foot, and she thought it was going to be even worse when Ben, a sort of coworker, shows up and offers to save the day. She accepts, and as they spend a little time together, away from work and work commitments, she finally allows herself to see him as man he is. Ben has had his eye on Melanie for a while, but he’s been waiting for the right time to see how things could be between them. Their banter was fun, and their chemistry was hot!!! Spicy and sweet quick read. Loved it!!!

This was a spicy quick read. Mel and Ben are at the same hotel on vacation, the only difference is Ben has a room and Mel’s is nonexistent. The hotel can’t help her but Ben offers her his spare room and she takes him up on the offer. He has been in love with her for a long time and this was just the icing on the cake for him! He shows her a good time and what it is like to finally relax while falling even harder for her. I liked the is book. But I found it hard to get into because I was not a huge fan of Mel and her attitude. Once I was able to get into the book I did enjoy it.

Delayed Play by KC Brooks

I love me a hot spicy baseball coach 😏 I mean who wouldn’t if they are anything like Ben! Delayed Play is an Erie City Hawks novella and it definitely was a grand slam for me! ⚾️

Ben and Melanie unknowingly book a vacation to the same place, same time. Melanie is the one that keeps the team in line and everything going smoothly. She’s black cat and makes no apologies for it. I’m LOVED this one book. It was funny and sweet and the spice was so hot. These 2 were absolutely made for each other!!

4.5 ⭐️ Melanie and Ben have worked together for many years and now happen to be at the same place on vacation. When her reservation isn’t found, he offers to let her stay in his villa. Staying in close proximity allows feelings to show as he tries to get her to have a stress free vacation. He reveals his long time crush on her and she’s been interested in him too. Plenty of steamy times and lots of warmth for how he treats her. Fast, fun, flirty, and steamy vacation times, but can it survive being back in the real world when vacation is over?

A short, spicy vacation romance where Ben (the Hawks team manager) and Mel (the Hawks Communications Director) end up sharing a room on vacation when Mel’s room falls through and he offers her the spare bed in his room. The forced proximity, the banter and their friendship leads to them giving into their feelings. I loved how they both had feelings for each other but never crossed the line due to work and his respect for her at their jobs.

A fun novella involving Melanie, the PR manager for the Hawks and Ben, the manager of the team. They meet on vacation and end up sharing a villa when her reservation is lost. Both have been keeping their attraction towards the other in secret. Being in their own little island bubble, they decided to go for it. Their chemistry and banter was so good but Melanie was worried it would crash when they got back home. Ben assured her they would get through it together.

4 ⭐️ Cute little Novella to add to a great series. Melanie is overworked and needs a break from the PR life but the vacation she planned didn’t turn out the way she had hoped! Ben is the manager for the baseball team. He is off limits due to their work relationship and him being older. Well, guess who is vacationing in the same spot and has something to offer to Melanie to make her trip great again… yup! A forced proximity workplace romance novella.

What a delicious little treat from KC Brooks. I loved this novella!! And I always find novellas difficult to really enjoy as sometimes they can feel rushed, but KC did such a great job and introducing the characters, that you felt their connection and it wasn’t too far fetched.

Mel and Ben were honestly perfect for each other.
I loved Mel’s introduction in Chapter 1 and you really got to know her personality. Ben was out of this world HOT and I fell in love with him.

I loved the ending and how they owned their romance, and got what they both wanted. They work really hard in their jobs, Ben being a baseball coach and Mel being the team’s saviour, and workaholic, she really did learn to put herself first.

I just loved it. In fact, I have loved the entire series and highly suggest you start with book 1, if you have not yet.

Gushing about Ben and Melanie is easy because their chemistry was off the charts. The banter was soooo good (and you know i live for the banter). He's wanted her years, just waiting for his chance and they end up at the same resort on vacation!!! Ugh the way this man shows her the best time on that island..both in and out of the bedroom 😉. When a strong bad ass fmc finally finds her "let me take care of you" man I EAT IT UP EVERY TIME!!!

I related so much to Melanie in this book. When your life revolves around email, spreadsheets, and deadlines the rest of your life falls to the background. Brooks’ representation of how Melanie has tied her self-worth to her productivity and drive to be the best was like she was in my head! I absolutely loved Ben. He struggled so much with his feelings and keeping them to himself. How he was able to finally be there for Melanie and show her that she is more than what she can do for other people had me melting on the floor. I adored how he made her slow down to reset, while at the same time backing her when things got tough. This quick read will have you running to read the rest of the Erie City Hawk series.

To sum this book up in 3 words: uplifting, spicy-sweet, and heartwarming.

“Not trying to be smooth, baby. Just making sure you know you already own me. Never bothered looking at anyone else when you exist in the world.”

“This man was the kind you waited a lifetime to experience— the one you fought through heaven and hell to keep.”

“Melanie Park was a force— a storm you sat back and admired as it moved through its path.”

“There’s nothing like telling a woman what a good job she’s doing, how much I love her touch— her mouth. Giving her all my words while she has me in the palm of her hand, making me fall apart into a million pieces.”

Dear Ben, you won me over with this line: “Seeing you succeed is a privilege.” I love it when a man is all in and so supportive of his woman’s ambitions.

Ben has been obsessed with Melanie for three years now but was willing to be her friend as long as it meant he could be in her life.
