The Greek Gods have a vindictive streak. Their immortal lives and family ties have led to years of plots and schemes, that often lead to humans feeling the fall-out.
One such plot involves two descendants of Zeus, brothers who share a soul mate.
Sam had led a relatively normal human life, until Marcus and Nick awaken memories she didn't know she had.

I loved this series.

Starkey has a way with being able to draw the reader in even after a few rather slow pages as the characters are introduced. Some of this could be moved to a prologue or an intro section since the very next chapter begins the faster paced story. The characters are layered and interesting and most of the book consists of forward movement and enjoyable reading. Overall the series is a fun read, one I believe the majority of readers of this genre will enjoy. I received an e-arc in exchange for an honest review which in no way influenced my opinion.

Deceived 3 stars

I was part of the Book Blitz for the Soul Keeper Series a year ago, and it was on sale during that time. Finally I’ve started reading it and I have to say I am impressed.

Greek mythology, a prophecy you cannot escape, a very likeable main character. Samantha is strong and independent, and I can definitely identify with her. (I was also one of the sporty ones in High School, however, I was never one of the popular ones.)

There are bits and pieces of the mystery spread out through this book, and if you are a good puzzle solver you probably will see a lot of the twists and turns coming. I didn’t see a single one until I was like half a page away from it being reviled, so I don’t consider it a problem.

It is easy, light and has enough of a mystery. There is also romance mixed in, but there is a big price on it. Basically the prophecy rules everything in this world and the characters question it and ask why they are forced by destiny to love someone. Where is their free will?

Destroyed 2 stars

Didn’t think I’d fly through this as fast as I did, but it is quite nice to fly through books (even if they’re just okay). So, in this we continue the story of Sam and how she’s mixed up in the games of the Greek gods. The story takes such an unbelievable turn and I cannot forget about it. If we weren’t reminded of the prophecy’s power on every second page this story would make no sense at this point. Not sure how I feel about that fact.

It is fun to be introduced to more of the gods and see their different relationships, and I like how Starkey has managed to make them feel like some other beings, and not like humans. Too often the gods just feel like humans with superpowers, so great work on making them different!

I will finish this series, but it probably won’t be one to last for me.

Descent 2 stars

This was the last book. Didn’t take me too long to finish it (but it also was the shortest). It was an okay ending to the story, but there are quite a few things I did not like.

One very typical thing in many YA novels is the disappearance of the family. In the last book it still was okay, but in this one? She’s been gone for over a week and no one knows where she went. What about the Parkers!? I need to know they’re okay with Sam not being there! They were so loving and caring that leaving them completely out of the story hurts my heart.

Another thing I didn’t like was the gods. I know I said they were good in the previous book, but in this one it just felt pitiful. They became “human”. I liked it more when the gods weren’t like humans, please keep the distinction.

The characters got weaker. What happened in this one was that the main characters basically didn’t have anything to bring to the story. And it got more and more clear that they were just pawns in a greater game (that no one could do anything about).

The best thing in this was Hades, and even he could have been better. At least he was honest about what he wanted. Poseidon was also well written, but he didn’t appear much so that might be why.

In conclusion, it was a quick read and I got a conclusion to the story. But it could have been better.

Deceived
I’m not really sure what I just read, but I know I’m hooked on it. There’s a little bit of Percy Jackson with the ‘teenaged children of the Greek pantheon working out their parents’ issues’ thing. Then we go a little Twilight saga with the angst-y, dark, emo girl, surrounded by loss and deception, caught between two gorgeous, powerful young men who both care for her desperately. It sucked me in and held my attention captive until it spat my broken, bleeding corpse loose at the end. There’s a lot of emotional turmoil in the book and I feel kind of bruised and battered coming out the other side. There’re some strong archetypal themes at work in this story and it’s hard not to be a little overwhelmed by them. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book, but I may need a few hours to recover first
Destroyed
I enjoyed this book, but I liked the first one a little bit better. I thought that this story suffered some from ‘middle book syndrome’. There’s a lot of story here and it covers a lot of ground. Probably more than was needed to achieve the end goal. In terms of real action, there isn’t a great deal of activity that truly happens within this book. This was one hundred percent soap opera with all the backstabbing and double-crossing. Even the cliff-hanger ending is handled in true daytime drama style. And just like any soap addict, I’m coming back for the next episode because I have to know what happens next.
Descent
This was a very emotional ending. It’s schmaltzy and sentimental and plays heavily on everything that tugs on the heartstrings, but I kind of love it even more for being ‘in your face’ in that way. I knew there had to be a way for this to work out in everyone’s favor, however I didn’t see that particular ending coming. It actually left it open for there to be more stories to come in this universe, and I think I’d be interested in reading every one of them.

the first 500 pages should have been condensed into about half of that. it was long and drawnout and repetitive. the last 150 pages was not bad. decent storyline finally came to light and had enough interest in the characters to finally care what would happen. otherwise I feel like this was not a great story. sam was barely someone you could even care what would happen to her and the two guys were one dimensional and dull. julie and persephone could be the same character. I actually got them mixed up a few times. 700+ pages of which guy would sam choose. really?

What in the world

It was amazing but the end was confusing. What did Nick do? And why did he choose this? Again what happened? So did something erase everyone's memories? Huh? It's just so unclear. And I spent over a month reading this book and I expected a more satisfying ending. Or a ending that made me angry but I understand why it happened. My thoughts are to read everything except the last two chapters.

This series is simply amazing. An in depth, intimate look into the lives of the Greek gods unlike any other I've read in the past. Oh, they are still up to no good, manipulating the lives of humans and each other. But in this story, L.A. Starkey gives us a much closer look at what makes them do the things they do bringing us closer to the lives of gods than ever before.
Deceived is where we meet Sam, and her friend Julie. Two teenage girls seemingly average. Strangers enter their lives, and the Greek tragedies as we know and love them are swung into motion. Here we see Sam learn of her destiny. How she comes to terms with it is lovely in this first book of the series.
This brings us to Destroyed. Not only the name of the second story in this series, but the continuation of Sam's journey. We are brought right along with her, when she is swept up in a quest, furthering the tragic events. The development of characters, Sam, Julie, Marcus, Nick and Stephanie are remarkable. You feel each one's decisions, heartbreak, excitement and sadness.
Finally, we enter the Descent. "At the core of every evil is pain." By this time we even get an inside look at the feelings and heads of the gods. It's something I wondered whether or not would be done right, and rest assured, it was. These gods became more real to me than ever before, and it was a thrilling ride!
This series brought me through just about every emotion there is. From sadness, fear and heartbreak to lust, deceit, friendship and true love, this series was truly special. The writing is fantastic, and I felt like it was from the depths of my own head and thoughts. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys stories about relationships, love and adventure!

I absolutely loved this series. It's fast paced with characters that you fall in love with. Sam is an incredibly strong willed girl who takes everything that happens pretty well. Only one major freak out in the entire series and you cant really blame her for it considering the circumstances.

Nick and Marcus are two sides of the same coin. I favored Nick, but I also really liked Marcus. They compliment each other extraordinarily well.

Also you get another perspective on most of the Greek Pantheon of Gods. Personally I loved how Hades was portrayed. I'd love to know more about him. Some of the Greek mythos was reworked but I really enjoyed it and it truly added to the story.

The first two books end in major emotionally charged cliffhangers so having the full box set is incredibly convenient.

This is a series that is defiantly worth a read!

Interesting new look

I really liked the idea of using Greek mythology. I also liked how it had a variety of gods and goddesses in the story. However, it did become confusing at times. There were parts that were fairly slow and seemed to drag on. The ending was a bit anticlimactic for me. It wasn't my favorite book, but it was well written and entertaining.
