Touching the Shadows has been accurately described by its byline, “A Love Tested and Renewed”. The story follows Racinda’s journey through the life of Bruce who has just received the most terrible news he could ever imagine. His wife had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Their marriage was not picture perfect to begin with, and although they had grown apart through the years, this news crushed Bruce. Through the many trials associated with cancer, Bruce and Racinda’s love was reignited as they began to lean on one another as they faced cancer together. Their marriage became stronger with each battle, and although cancer is known as a disease that destroys, it was the battle with cancer that enabled them to mend their marriage and bring new life to their love for one another.
Bruce wrote a very touching story. One that I was pulled into from page one, and kept me intrigued throughout the telling until I finished the last page. It was a story full of emotion which Bruce articulately captured as he shared his and Racinda’s story with the reader. He was open, truthful, and because of this I shared their story…anticipating the outcome, and hoping the story’s ending would be a happy one.
Yes, I was encouraged by the story. I was educated too. The author, Bruce Nygren, brought the statistics of cancer to the reader in a way that enhanced the struggle him and his wife were going through. As I have never experienced breast cancer, or known of someone who has, this information was very helpful in understand certain aspects of cancer and of its affects.
This is a book about love too. Real love, the kind that goes beyond the physical. It’s a book you’ll want to share with the younger reader, between 16 – 20 years, because it showcases a love of commitment, not just of convenience. Bruce is a great example of a man who loves his wife for who she is (flaws and all), and not for what she can do for him, or how she looks, although he is attracted to her as well. It’s the same with Racinda too. They both discovered a deeper love of one another. This is a wonderful message to share with the younger generation!
An extraordinary tale--told with immediacy and humor--of how a married couple are drawn together by life-threatening illness. "At a level never experienced before in our marriage, I became my wife's servant."
Cancer in some form will strike one out of three Americans. That means it will probably strike you or someone you love. This book details another's trip through that dark valley.
Must reading for all married, formerly married and yet-to-be married.
