There have been days when I've considered quitting being an ARC reader, and today is one of them 🙂👍
I'm almost afraid to count how many times the whole "whoa, she's an assassin and she was sent to kill him! 😱" premise has failed me. And all of them were arcs. And yes, sometimes I think I'm the problem, but when the blurb mentions a "king" let's be honest, most of us are going to think about a medieval setting, not modern times.
The Chaos of a Hunter combines both.
Sadly, that kind of concept rarely works for me. If I want to read urban fantasy, I'll find books where the characters are already familiar with modern technology. If I want to read about royalty, I'll find books with a medieval setting so I can experience all the fun that comes with swords, not guns. For me, mixing the two just ruins the vibe.
I don't remember the author mentioning this in the form though hehe 🙂
However, my biggest problem with this book is the writing. It was ... Too much.
1. 𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗣𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘
The author seems to think that throwing random information and long monologues at us will make it easier for readers to connect with the characters. For example:

As someone who has the memory of a goldfish, I appreciate that the author is thinking about us, but maybe trust your readers brain next time? 👁️👄👁️
3. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗬
I struggled to figure out the exact setting of the story. At one point, a side character mentions the year:
"𝙎𝙪𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝟱𝟲𝟵𝟴." 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚𝙙, "𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙧 𝙗𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙣 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨, 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙧𝙡𝙤."
That's fucking 3000+ years from now, and yet the technology doesn't seem that advanced. Sure, we have refrigerators, earpieces, and satellites. But the MMC travels by motorized carriage. A god damn 𝗠𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗭𝗘𝗗 𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗚𝗘.
I mean, where's the flying car??? Why does he still train with swords and not, Idk, a nuclear laser gun? Did something happen that reset civilization? Seriously, 𝙒𝙃𝘼𝙏 𝙃𝘼𝙋𝙋𝙀𝙉𝙀𝘿???
4. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗘𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗠/𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗔𝗩𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗠
I can't stress enough how much the MMC in this gave me a headache. Look, I'm a sucker for role reversal. I love it when the MMC is the innocent, awkward, naive one. I even read another indie book with the same premise as this one where the MMC seemed to cry every 50 pages (I'm looking at you, The Assassin's Revenge by Sara Bittner 😉) and I loved it.
Here? Aeryn just gave me a headache.
Dude's parents were just murdered. The sole survivor had a daughter. And who do you think he made commander of his armies? The fucking daughter 💀🤌 He didn't even consider that her father could have been lying about her parents' deaths. He just trusted her because they were childhood friends.
I'm all for a lady knight, but mind you, the daughter HASN'T even been knighted yet.
I mean, good for her.
But also, good luck with the scandal???

And then he makes it even worse by planning to have the FMC become his advisor after meeting her ONCE. For a few minutes. It got to the point where another character said:
“𝙄 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙛𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚… 𝙛𝙖𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜. 𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙨𝙖𝙛𝙚𝙩𝙮 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚."

Should I also mention that the FMC was raised by one of the leaders of her organization, which was why she was able to become the first female asssasin?

5. 𝗦𝗟𝗢𝗪 𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗡 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘
For a book that's 492 pages long, I knew I wasn't going to get a fast burn. That's fine by me. I actually like slow burn. But what I didn't expect was for the main characters to not interact until 19%. That's almost 100 pages. 𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗛𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗥𝗘𝗗 𝗣𝗔𝗚𝗘𝗦. Good lord 💀
I might've forgiven it if the characters didn't immediately start drooling over each other, but the sparks of instalove were the final nail in the coffin. I can't do this anymore. This is torture.
It's always funny how these assassin FMC books somehow end up killing the fun for me and not their actual target 😭

I struggled to figure out the exact setting of the story. At one point, a side character mentions the year:
"𝙎𝙪𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝟱𝟲𝟵𝟴." 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚𝙙, "𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙧 𝙗𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙣 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨, 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙧𝙡𝙤."
That's fucking 3000+ years from now, and yet the technology doesn't seem that advanced. Sure, we have refrigerators, earpieces, and satellites. But the MMC travels by motorized carriage. A god damn 𝗠𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗭𝗘𝗗 𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗚𝗘.
I mean, where's the flying car??? Why does he still train with swords and not, Idk, a nuclear laser gun? Did something happen that reset civilization? Seriously, 𝙒𝙃𝘼𝙏 𝙃𝘼𝙋𝙋𝙀𝙉𝙀𝘿???
4. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗘𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗠/𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗔𝗩𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗠
I can't stress enough how much the MMC in this gave me a headache. Look, I'm a sucker for role reversal. I love it when the MMC is the innocent, awkward, naive one. I even read another indie book with the same premise as this one where the MMC seemed to cry every 50 pages (I'm looking at you, The Assassin's Revenge by Sara Bittner 😉) and I loved it.
Here? Aeryn just gave me a headache.
Dude's parents were just murdered. The sole survivor had a daughter. And who do you think he made commander of his armies? The fucking daughter 💀🤌 He didn't even consider that her father could have been lying about her parents' deaths. He just trusted her because they were childhood friends.
I'm all for a lady knight, but mind you, the daughter HASN'T even been knighted yet.
I mean, good for her.
But also, good luck with the scandal???

5. 𝗦𝗟𝗢𝗪 𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗡 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘
For a book that's 492 pages long, I knew I wasn't going to get a fast burn. That's fine by me. I actually like slow burn. But what I didn't expect was for the main characters to not interact until 19%. That's almost 100 pages. 𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗛𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗥𝗘𝗗 𝗣𝗔𝗚𝗘𝗦. Good lord 💀
I might've forgiven it if the characters didn't immediately start drooling over each other, but the sparks of instalove were the final nail in the coffin. I can't do this anymore. This is torture.
It's always funny how these assassin FMC books somehow end up killing the fun for me and not their actual target 😭

Why I wanted to read this one:
Do I have a soft spot for sassy girlboss assassins who (get distracted but) are mission minded? Yes. Yes I do 😅 Add in a prince who is head over heels for her from their first interaction and oh boy, I’m hooked 🤭
Main Characters:
The dual pov makes it fun to get into each of their heads, and boy does Aeryn really care about what other people think (me too bro).I liked that it took time in the beginning before our two main characters crossed paths, gave some time to get to know the world and what they’re “up against.”
Aeryn seems to really be fighting how he wants to present himself vs the internal thoughts. Laila is clearly incredibly capable, and constantly calculates what to do next. But when she periodically slips into habits and forgets she’s supposed to be undercover it’s quite funny 😅
Watching their dynamic evolve over the story, influenced by their own stubborn convictions and the other folks in the place, was an excellent amount of slow burn. I did however find it really funny how quickly Aeryn was charmed by Laila 🤭 Their back and forth was so entertaining, every interaction had a point to it. I think only the banter between Aeryn and Niq might be better than the FMC/MMC dynamic, but hey getting called out by friends is always funny to me
Plot:
Easy enough to follow, yet complex enough to be interested in the (significant pile of) unanswered questions! We dive right into the action from the beginning, with many many character introductions and setup on the existing world power holders. As the events of the story unfold, questions surrounding these mysterious occurrences and how they relate or not to one another grow more and more concerning. Every single character matters and by the end I found myself flipping back to the beginning to figure out “wait was it really that guy??”
My only qualm (this might just be a me thing!) is trying to place a good visual on everything regarding setting / time period fit. We have royalty, castles, and court etiquette, but also 21st century golden gowns with high slits and satellite tech. Trying to picture where the story sits relative to IRL modernness vs regency era “you need a lady in waiting” is a bit tricky at times, but it’s not taking away anything from the story.

What an amazing story. Leila is trained to be an assassin. She’s the only female in the Ziyad, and she’s the only one that can complete this next mission. They want her to ebbs the life of Aeryn, the king. But at sees from the start that he’s not the tyrant they led her to believe her was. So now she has to make a decision, because she’s falling for him. Execute him or love him?
This was such an intense and spectacular read. I loved that she was trained being the only woman. And the only woman to complete this job. Clearly she was mislead about the kind of person he was. So why did they want him gone? Such a captivating read that had me completely immersed from beginning to end. I loved the twists and turns. This was an excellent story..

This book was so different, everything from the FMC to the setting.
It was really good, and the FMC was so badass that I instantly loved her. Some of the things she said was so funny, that I actually laughed out loud. 10/10 would recommend if you love plot twists, a serial unaliver FMC, and secret societies.

The Chaos of a Hunter is the first book in a Fantasy Romance series and it was amazing, I loved Laila and Aeryn’s story!
Laila is the only woman in a league of assassins and only she can complete the newest mission: make the king fall in love with her, spy on him and then kill him. But Aeryn, the king who killed the man she loved, turns out not to be the monster she expected and with them both on a quest for revenge and Laila hiding who she is, they need to decide what is more important to them: their growing feelings for each other or revenge.
I absolutely love books with an assassin FMC who is sent to kill the MMC and this trope was written perfectly here with a great build up leading to that decision. I had so much fun with this book from page one, the world building was really interesting with the modern technologies and the plot was perfectly paced with some secrets, intrigues, politics and plot twists that made this book unputdownable. Laila was an amazing FMC, so strong and cunning and fighting for revenge, I absolutely loved her and her character development. Aeryn was not exactly the way I expected but it was a nice surprise and I loved how perfect he was for Laila despite being her polar opposite, he was really caring and kind but also grieving and fighting for revenge. These two definitely took their time when it came to their relationship but there was something between them since their first meeting and I loved seeing them slowly fall for each other and Laila’s inner conflict with it, they were incredible together and the way he fell first and was so down bad for her was amazing to see. But those last few chapters were pure chaos and after that cliffhanger I need the next book ASAP!

The Chaos of a Hunter by Ashley J. Montoya completely consumed me.
Zazsiyad Laila is an orphan and a highly trained assassin raised by the Ziyad. When she’s assigned to infiltrate King Aeryn’s court and ultimately assassinate him, she believes she’s delivering justice. But the deeper she gets into his world, the more she realizes that nothing is as it seems.
I loved the contrast between these two characters. Laila is fierce, guarded, and has spent her entire life believing love is forbidden. Aeryn is compassionate, thoughtful, and carries the weight of a kingdom on his shoulders while genuinely trying to do what’s right. Watching their relationship grow from deception into something... else... was incredibly satisfying.
The mystery surrounding the murders, the political intrigue, and the unraveling corruption within the Ziyad kept me hooked from beginning to end. Every revelation raised the stakes, and I found myself racing through the pages to discover who could truly be trusted.
Then came that ending. WHAT?!
I honestly messaged the author the moment I finished to interrogate her. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you what I asked without venturing into spoiler territory—but wow... you’ll just have to experience it for yourself. What I can say is that this book completely wrecked me. The final chapters deliver an emotional cliffhanger that left me stunned and desperate for answers. Thankfully, this is the first book in a series because I don’t think my heart could have accepted that as the end.
If you enjoy slow-burn romance, deadly heroines, honorable kings, political intrigue, hidden corruption, and stories that aren’t afraid to put your heart through the wringer before delivering the promise of an ultimate HEA, The Chaos of a Hunter is absolutely worth picking up.
I cannot wait to see where this series goes next.

3.5 stars ✨ I can’t wait for book 2!
This took me a little while to get into, but around 25% things really picked up. The murder mystery, romance, twists, and intrigue kept me hooked, and I was always looking forward to my next chance to read! I really liked both main characters and their banter. Their relationship was sweet and I loved watching it develop. I couldn’t stop stressing over how Laila was going to handle her mission though, and the ending was crazy!!

I enjoyed the overall story, but I felt like the world-building was a bit inconsistent and the book could’ve used another round of editing for typos, sentence structure, and a few plot holes.
For the world-building: This world has underwater high-speed trains, elevators, and spy earpieces, but no phones? And they’re still riding in horse-drawn carriages?? It also felt odd that such a technologically-advanced world referenced the gods so much. And the single use of “scout’s honor” didn’t make sense to me since Boy Scouts don’t exist in this fantasy world lol. I also wish the gods/belief system had been explained earlier because I felt pretty lost until around 40%.
A couple plot holes I noticed:
* Laila is hugging Ellis right before she passes out, but then Aeryn’s POV says he’s the one holding onto Ellis.
* Aeryn thinks Niq suggested the Ziyad were assassins, but Niq never actually said that. He only mentioned hearing about a secret league of assassins, not that it was the Ziyad.

It also felt odd that such a technologically-advanced world referenced the gods so much. And the single use of “scout’s honor” didn’t make sense to me since Boy Scouts don’t exist in this fantasy world lol. I also wish the gods/belief system had been explained earlier because I felt pretty lost until around 40%.
A couple plot holes I noticed:
* Laila is hugging Ellis right before she passes out, but then Aeryn’s POV says he’s the one holding onto Ellis.
* Aeryn thinks Niq suggested the Ziyad were assassins, but Niq never actually said that. He only mentioned hearing about a secret league of assassins, not that it was the Ziyad.
Even though I had some critiques, I still was totally invested and am looking forward to reading book 2 to see what will happen next!

I really enjoyed The Chaos of a Hunter. From the very beginning, it pulled me in with its mix of danger, mystery, and just the right amount of romance. I found myself wanting to know more about the characters and the world they were living in, and I ended up flying through it much faster than I expected.
The main character was easy to connect with, and I loved watching her grow as the story unfolded. The action scenes kept things exciting, while the quieter moments gave the relationships time to develop. I also appreciated that the romance didn’t completely overshadow the fantasy elements.
The only reason this wasn’t a full five stars for me is that I wanted more. I would have loved a deeper dive into the world-building and a little more development for some of the side characters. There were a few moments that felt rushed, but they didn’t take away from how much I enjoyed the overall story.
If you’re looking for a fantasy with an intriguing heroine, plenty of twists, and a romance that keeps you invested, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a try.

OUT FUCKING STANDING!!!! Literally perfection. I love Laila!!!! She is literal perfection. Absolutely wonderful. Hilarious and witty. She's everything I want in am FMC. And Aeryn is a freaking dream. Just these characters made every single second of this book worth it. I would read another thousand pages of these two just them and their banter. Laila is so darn snarky and made the book. Yes the story and plot is great. But Laila---she made the book. Literally fucking love her!!!!!
