Alias Hicks is a fantastic second instalment in Elwood Flynn's Robin Castle series.
Picking up where Hot Lead left off, we reunite with Robin Castle in the mountains, drifting through life and struggling to find his place. Just as he begins to regain his footing, he's pulled back into the violence he can never seem to escape when a gruesome murder rocks a nearby town.
Castle remains a quiet, stoic, and immensely likeable protagonist. Beneath his reserved exterior is a man driven by deep emotion, forever caught between his pursuit of happiness and his need for vengeance. He's the kind of character that's easy to root for, even when his path takes him into increasingly dark places.
The novel's antagonist, Walter Hicks, is a standout. Unhinged, ruthless, and utterly unpredictable, every scene featuring him crackles with tension. Flynn creates a constant sense of unease whenever Hicks is on the page, making him a genuinely memorable villain.
Flynn's writing is sharp, fast-paced, and highly engaging, with short, punchy chapters that make it difficult to stop reading. The momentum rarely lets up, always leaving you eager to discover what happens next.
Everything builds towards a gripping, suspense-filled finale in the mountains that delivers on the novel's promise, keeping the pages turning until the very end.
Alias Hicks is an excellent follow-up to Hot Lead, expanding Robin Castle's story while introducing a compelling new villain and another thrilling adventure in the American Frontier. Fans of gritty crime fiction and morally complex heroes will find plenty to enjoy here.

Just like the first Robin Castle western, it’s a fast-paced, evocative story told with a good level of skill. A few lines really stand out for their insight and panache.
I say this in the most positive way: this is good quality pulp fiction. Cliches, archetypes, primal motivations, violence. All good conventions, put together here effectively.
This is a promising author who I will be following keenly!
I was able to get an Advanced Reader Copy (for free) by signing up to Elwood’s newsletter and volunteering to be a part of his posse. I’d highly recommend it.

A pulpy Western tale of revenge. What’s not to love?
Alias Hicks delivers plenty of dusty trails, violence, and hard-edged characters, with a straightforward revenge story that keeps things moving. It doesn’t reinvent the Western, but it knows exactly what kind of story it wants to be and leans into it.
A quick, entertaining read with enough grit to satisfy if you’re in the mood for a classic Western tale.
