If life is turning out to be somewhat less than what you hoped for, you might want to set sail with Cappy and Essie as they throw their ordinary lives to the curb and follow the wind to adventure and romance. This “mostly true” story shows us that it’s never too late to set your compass on the right course. From different generations, Cappy and Essie meet under the most unlikely of scenarios embarking on one of the most unusual and entertaining adventures ever taken under sail. This semi-autobiographical tale takes you with author Les Pendleton and his wife, Susanne, on a cruise from their personal prisons to the life of adventure they wove together with the help of a salty crew and their trusty sloop, Calypso. All of the characters and photos are real people using their real names. Many of the places and events are also real though rearranged chronologically and perhaps slightly enhanced so that the author could enjoy writing about the events as much as he did living them. You’ll find yourself completely absorbed by their adventures as they chase palm trees and sunshine. In short order you’ll be saying...”I need to make a change like this”. So, grab a cold drink and kick back. You’re about to change your latitude!
Les Pendleton lives in historic New Bern, North Carolina. His writing style conveys the influence of his career in motion pictures. Many people share their impression that reading his novels feels as if you are watching the characters come to life on the silver screen. Actual locations in coastal North Carolina are featured in many of his books. His writing spans a wide array of genres from action adventure, romance, historical fiction, suspense-filled mysteries and autobiographies. Les spends every free moment with his family and friends sailing in Pamlico Sound and the Atlantic Coast.
There's nothing like a good sailor's yarn and this one was just that. Listed as fiction, the author states in the introduction that 90 percent of the tale is true. I don't know what 10 percent wasn't but it does not make a difference since the story of a journey down the eastern coast of the USA was a fun one and the reader gets to meet some colorful characters along the way.
I enjoyed this…a bit ‘technical’ with all the sailing terms, but a very good story. Les Pendleton writes great descriptions of people, places and the scenes around. I may even find the sequel. It’s a quick read.
Very enjoyable to see lives unfolding and simultaneously being created essentially at the same time. Relationships and adventures seem to be the driving factor in a great many of tales. A simple read, with the southern hospitality and sailors tongue that make the east coast such a special place.
An almost unbelievable sailing adventure - yet a story about totally relatable everyday people. I enjoyed the characters, the sailing and the story. The sailing descriptions were richly detailed, and I felt I was sailing along with them. Great local author. Recommend reading for summers on the coast of the Carolinas!
This work keep me more than interested! It is a superb story about sailing and life with a surprise too. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be entertained by the written word. Simply put, a wonderful story!
