I'm sad I didn't love this book. I had a bit of high expectations because I really liked Queried Sick by the same author, so I was expecting to feel the same this time around.
Somehow, this just didn't work for me. The MCs were a bit volatile. Adrian was super cocksure one moment, and the next, he acted like he had the emotional maturity of a teenager. I get he has never been in a relationship, but come on, he is in his mid-30s, he can't act better.
Jamie was an anxious mess one moment, and the next, angry and yelling.
I just didn't buy their relationship; it was meh.

This was cute and sweet with a pinch of spice and I gobbled it right up. Honestly think I went in with expectations a little too high bc I absolutely ADORED Dallas’ first book, but I did still really enjoy this one. Loved the anxiety rep, discussion on bisexuality and it not changing regardless of your partner, and it was cool to see acid reflux discussed as a chronic issue because it’s not something I ever really see in novels. Both MCs were really cute and also very smart. Maybe a touch too in touch with their inner motivation but we love a character who goes to therapy so 🤷♀️
Also, I read a review who said this is a blatant ripoff of RW&RB and it made me lose my mind a little because this really isn’t and I feel like that is a shitty accusation to make.

Congressman Jamie Montgomery is going through a lot right now. He's up for re-election this year AND he's having a bit of a bi-awakening. Or...he thinks he is? He's never actually tested the theory; he's just too busy all day every day. When his press secretary and best friend Mina insists that the pair go out for a drink to decompress, Jamie decides they ought to check out a gay bar. Adrian is adorable and omg I love pets with human names. It's one of my favorite things. (The concept of a cat named Joseph just hits so much more differently than Socks or something).
I did find Adrian frustrating at points because it felt like he blamed his anxiety for his other obvious need for therapy (his trauma from never forming bonds with anyone as a kid).
Despite that I found this book to be really enjoyable. I love text conversations in books. I love fake dating. I love a good bi-awakening. I think this book will be an easy win for a lot of people.

this was unfortunately not for me at all. im so sad because this was an arc but it is what it is. i had a hard time connecting with the characters. at times, i even found it hard to distinguish between the two main characters. even tho they have different bg's and are objectively different people, when i was reading a chapter, i would randomly forget who's pov i was reading. i also think jamie using darlin' came out of nowhere and just did not flow at all. same w adrian calling him baby. it felt so thrown in there for the sake of it sounding endearing or hot but completely took me out of the story. also, idk if this is deliberate or just bad writing but the only times id see jamie have an accent was with adrian and then suddenly somewhere halfway, that also disappeared? idk if this just happens with accents? but it was so strange and took me out of the story again.

OK, I freaking LOVED this book! Bi-Partisan starts with a one night stand and ends up with just the sweetest romance between a congressman and a veterinarian, and I was here for ALL of it. Add in both mental illness and chronic illness rep, supportive friends and family, and a relatively low angst storyline with a sweet HEA, and you have a great politically-themed romance that (especially if you are in the US dealing with election-related stress) should make you smile.
I loved earnest freshman Congressman Jamie. He gets publicly outed in gossip site article after being seen leaving a gay bar with a one night stand, and my heart hurt for him and the fact that it sends his campaign into crisis mode. Jamie is basically at the tail end of a bi-awakening at the beginning of the book, and while I did sort of wish that we'd gotten a little more backstory there, I loved that his bisexuality is IMMEDIATELY confirmed when he lays eyes on Adrian. And AHH I love a vet (and doting cat dad) MMC! His struggles with anxiety felt incredibly real, as did his hesitations about having a real (rather than a fake) relationship with Jamie. Despite that, the serious sparks between these two guys were evident from the start, I don't know how they thought they were going to get away with a fake relationship. Not only that, but there's incredible spice with tons of consent - yes, please!
Bi-Partisan is out now, and I HIGHLY recommend to anyone looking for a shorter romance read that you just can't put down (I basically read it in one sitting). With all that's going on in American politics right now, we need more sweet stories like this!
*Side note - I have no idea how the reviewer who said this book is a rip off of RWARB got that impression. Other than the fact that they are both have a bi MMC and are somewhat about American politics, the books really don't have any similarities at all.

Pros: queer rep
Cons: many editing issues such as typos, missing words, misspelled words and funky sentences that didn’t sense. Personality of the main characters were way too similar to the previous book, ‘Queried Sick’. It is a huuuuge stretch to say there is chronic illness rep (re: the occasional antacid taken by mmc until 85% through the book when he sees dr and takes hydroxyzine to tide him over til he sees another dr (book ends before this happens)).
Despite this, i still think the author has something with the way she writes cute, HEA, queer characters and i’d 100% try one another book by her — maybe something more OwnVoices style.

First book I've read by this author, and I loved it!
I really enjoye the fake relationship trope that gradually turned into something real, so this book was a wing for me.
The mcs and the setting were great, and Jamie completely stole my heart,such a sweetheart! There were times when I wanted to strangle Adrian, but together they make a great couple. The supporting characters are well developed too.
I'll definitely be reading more books by this author!

I think this book finally got me out of my slump!! It was very cute and easy to read. I will say the author has a fetish for the word “darlin” that I DO NOT SHARE. But that’s okay. I enjoyed the little details about politics/working in government that I related to. There were a few scenes that I wish went into more detail and some that I think could’ve been cut or shortened. But all in all it was a fun romance read with some of my fave elements!

I loved it!
Jamie's 28, a Congressman from a relatively conservative district, and has yet to come out as bi. Taking a much-needed break from the stress of his job, he hits the town with his friends, meets Adrian, and make an instant connection. That ends up all over the tabloids.
Adrian is a veterinarian with anxiety who just doesn't think he can do relationships. Not only that, he hates attention and avoids the limelight like the plague. But somehow he agrees to be Jamie's fake boyfriend--they hope if it looks like Jamie's in a committed relationship, his district will be more approving.
Both main characters were so lovable in so many ways. Jamie's southern accent and "darlins" were adorable, and he was so genuine (especially for a politician, we can always dream, right?). Adrian is so genuine too, and a little scarred from his past. There's great chemistry between them, and the whole book is just feel-good and heartwarming.
And, no annoying third-act breakup!

I don’t usually like stories with a lot of politics; it reminds me too much of what’s going on out in the real world so I can’t escape into the book, but this one I loved. The plot was good if predictable, and I enjoyed the glimpse into the life of a congressman.
I do like a fake boyfriend story but this one was a little different. I really appreciate that Jamie didn’t offer to pay Adrian. That’s too Pretty Woman and demeaning to me. Instead he respected Adrian and made it clear what the situation was. He wasn’t pushy, demanding, or manipulative. He was just a great guy, as was Adrian, especially in how they each reacted to the public outing.
The chemistry between the two MCs was off the charts, the sexual tension high. There was a bit too much sex but it was hot but sweet at the same time so I didn’t mind.
They both suffered from anxiety and it was handled really well, very realistically. There wasn’t a lot of angst; it was anxiety from current stressors in one and a diagnosed mental health condition in the other. They both handled the obstacles as well as they could given their different situations. Adrian didn’t use his anxiety as a crutch, nor did he “overcome” it through the developing relationship. It was something that was part of him, something he had to live with like any other medical condition.
I wish this were a series so I could read more about these two. Goodreads is unclear on whether it’s a series or not so I’m going to look into that. But the author only has a couple of books so far and this was published this year so hopefully more are yet to come. (I read her other book, too, and liked it as well.)

When I tell you that I blasted my way through Bi-Partisan, there’s not a shred of hyperbole! I guess political romances are one of my new niche interests? 👀 I can’t help it if they’re good! It’s something about that mixture of romance and hope for the future that just gets me 😩
I loved the chemistry between Adrian and Jaime from the jump. Was their attraction immediate? Sure, but a little insta-lust/love/pining never hurt anyone! 🙌🏽 I enjoyed that they were always aware of one another’s boundaries and that the miscommunication between them was very short lived. I’m also not usually one for saccharine sweet nicknames, but something about someone with a southern accent saying the word “sweetheart” will always make my knees go a little weak 😂

I really love books with characters in political roles and so I’ve read a lot of them! This one, whilst a fun and engaging read, was very much a mid book in the genre in my opinion. I felt like very little happened in the plot; because the congressman, Jamie, is outed right at the start of the book we didn’t get a lot in the way of forbidden romance and I feel the fake dating just didn’t have the threat of discovery that fake dating books usually have… they transitioned into real lovers very quickly, which was lovely but just not what I want from a book with warring politicians. Even the ‘bad guy’ republican wasn’t that abhorrent imo and whilst he was touted as being a homophobic, racist ass, we didn’t get any of that vitriol on page from him. Also we never discovered who outed them and I feel like I was cheated out of a big dramatic reveal?!
I also struggled a little with the discourse between the characters - they (mainly Adrian) often sounded like he was quoting from a therapy textbook and some of the things they said to each other just didn’t feel realistic. Like I absolutely get the author was trying to convey a lot of helpful information to deal with stress and anxiety but it just made the characters come off as unrealistic.
That being said, if you want a low angst read with lots of good communication when it comes to consent, really well written spicy scenes and some great bi-representation, this one should be great for you! I couldn’t put this book down; it was such a sweet and swoony story.
After a one-night stand and a recent bi-awakening, Jamie, a congressman, finds himself outed. With an upcoming election and the need to manage the PR fallout, he decides the best course of action is to fake a relationship with his one-night stand, Adrian.
Jamie and Adrian are so sweet with each other, and despite being complete opposites, their support for one another is incredibly gentle, caring, and thoughtful.
I laughed out loud so many times! The side characters were perfect, adding exactly what the main characters and I needed. This book made me grin for most of it, but it also made me cry and wrapped my heart in its warmth. It truly had everything I look for in a story.
The way Dallas portrayed Jamie’s bi-awakening was done so well, and I especially loved the support from his friends and family. It’s amazing to read positive stories like this; they are so important for us bisexuals to feel seen and loved just as we are.
This book will be a top read for me. I’m just disappointed that life got busy and I didn’t get to read it sooner. It also reminded me of Red, White & Royal Blue and filled the exact void I was missing.

Looking for a soft, sweet romance with a good amount of spice? Well, here it is! No angst, no third act breakup, fake dating, genuine characters— it’s all here. Jamie and Adrian are both real and relatable.
I zipped right through this one, couldn’t put it down! If there was anything I missed was a little more personal interaction between the characters, but their growing relationship is perfectly evident through text messaging. I also love that Smith used songs as chapter titles, creating a playlist of their story. I listen to music while I read so it was nice to have that.

Looking for a soft, sweet romance with a good amount of spice? Well, here it is! No angst, no third act breakup, fake dating, genuine characters— it’s all here. Jamie and Adrian are both real and relatable.
I zipped right through this one, couldn’t put it down! If there was anything I missed was a little more personal interaction between the characters, but their growing relationship is perfectly evident through text messaging. I also love that Smith used songs as chapter titles, creating a playlist of their story. I listen to music while I read so it was nice to have that.

I love slow burn romances.
This isn't a classic slow burn because holy hookup meet cute??
The fake dating, pining, accepting each other's quirks and getting to know each other is done very well.
I loved how both characters have to overcome their own insecurities and slowly fall in love with each other.
Anxiety is portrayed and described very realistic and I love how the author generates awareness by making anxiety part of both MC mindsets.

This is my first Dallas Smith book, but I am blown away by how good this book was! First of all, the cover is adorable and drew me in right away. I love any romance novel that features a character that is in politics, and I also love to see characters featured in medicine - Adrian just so happens to be a veterinarian, so animal medicine it is. Jamie is a Congressman who is up for relection, but he is just discovering his own bisexuality and is not out to his constiuents. He goes out with friends one night, where he meets Adrian and they have an instant conenction, followed by a one night stand. Unfortunately, Jamie is then publicly outed, due to someone taking photos of him and Adrian, and his team decides that the best course of action is for Jamie and Adrian to fake date to help his chances of winning.
This book features so many of my favorite things: politics, MM romance, fake dating, bi awakening, chronic illness rep, mental health rep, and a playlist. I love just how much care the author put into both characters and their respective struggles. Jamie is struggling with chronic illness (acid reflux/GERD) and I thought the author's portrayal was so accurate and well researched. Adrian struggles with an anxiety disorder, and it makes him have a hard time in his relationships. I loved how Jamie and Adrian took care of each other, and there was so much concern from both of them. It was clear just how much they liked each other, and each and every moment between was just so sweet and cute. This book is just cozy and cute and a great book to curl up with. There was spice in this book, and I really loved how well it was written. It was hot, but also tender and showed the connection between Jamie and Adrian. I also really enjoyed the side characters within this book and hope that we might get stories for them.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and absolutely adore Jamie and Adrian! They hold a special place in my heart and I'm looking forward to more in this series. Thank you so much to Dallas Smith for the eARC of this book!

Dallas Smith can do no wrong 🙌🏻
Bi-Partisan is the sweetest, fluffiest romance to grace my shelf this year. Fake dating is probably my all time favourite trope (if done correctly) and I think it really hit the spot in this book - it was executed with utter perfection.
Jamie and Adrian are probably in my top 5 fave couples of 2024. One thing I learnt from QS is that Dallas knows how to write couples that are transparent, supportive and help each other heal & grow; and Jamie & Adrian proved me right.
I won’t ever not recommend this book, besides the romance we just get so much representation, a journey of self discovery both from Jamie and Adrian’s perspective for two very different reasons, the awareness of the effects both physical and mental illnesses have on everyday life and just an overall smushy, loving found family (not to forget the adorable animals that just stole the show).
Bi-Partisan is out now in paperback, on kindle and KU & I urge you all to go pick it up, it’s honestly a perfect summer read!!

Bi-Partisan is a wonderful story that follows Congressman Jamie Montgomery's self-discovery in a heartfelt and realistic manner. All too often bisexuality is dismissed as curiosity or greediness so when I had the opportunity to read the first book in the District Love series by Dallas Smith.
Of course, it didn't disappoint at all and is one I will happily re-read and recommend to anyone looking for excellent bisexual representation. The characters are wonderful, with fears and desires that are both realistic and valid. I loved Jamie Montgomery, the political candidate whose 'right place - wrong time' situation catapulted him into the chaos that's fake dating on the man you're crushing on. He's the epitome of a gentleman and he deserves all the love he finds.
Because of course, Bi-Partisan is a happy ever after for our politician and his handsome veterinarian; Adrian.
Alongside the love story, the author gives us an excellent representation of how mental health issues, especially anxiety; along with chronic physical illness can impact people's lives on a day-to-day basis.
Something that is still lacking in fiction and media in general so to read it done with a gentle hand, made me love the book more.
This is an incredible book filled with love, and loyalty and is a testament to the fact attraction can come out of nowhere and capture your heart and soul. That loving someone regardless of gender is valid and that you're seen.

I really needed this soft comforting read! Adrian and Jamie melted my jaded heart. It’s story about owning your queerness, living and loving with anxiety, and realizing you can open yourself up to new experiences.
The anxiety and bi awakening was writing with such love and understanding. Both really resonated with me. 🫶🏻But don’t let these soft boys fool you, there is equal sweet and spicy in this book!

A one night stand becomes a fake dating relationship in this fun queer romance. Congressman Jamie Montgomery wants to safely explore his bisexuality and heads to a gay bar with his friends. After he is outed, he asks veterinarian Adrian to be in a fake relationship with him until the election.
I loved seeing these two great men come together. The romance was paced differently for the physical and emotional aspects, and it felt so lovely and real. I especially enjoyed their shared text conversations to get to know each other. And wow, both of them are such amazing book boyfriends who just show up for each other.
I thought there was a great description of situational anxiety versus generalized anxiety disorder. And that's precisely the kind of representation I think we need more of.
And I also really enjoyed the politics. It wasn't at all over-the-top and felt like a perfect and optimistic novel during this election year.

Read if you want: good anxiety & acid reflux rep, lots of cute animals, hopeful US politics, love Parks and Rec, wonderful MCs and solid side characters
I adored this book! It’s a fun and cute romance with lots of cute animals and politics! The politics portion is prominent but not too heavy (as anyone living in America can attest to, American politics can be really depressing right now). The politics portion doesn't delusionally ignore the state of politics, especially for queer people, in 2024, but it’s also not depressing and vitriol is kept to a minimum and mostly referenced instead of shown, which I appreciated. The characters were lovely, and the side characters were great, not flat but also not show stealers. I love how much the MCs support each other. The anxiety and GERD (acid reflux) rep was well done. Also, I loved all the Parks and Rec references — totally the right vibe for the book and one of my fave shows.
If Dallas Smith writes it, I will read it!

I was soooo excited to get a chance to read an arc of this book - especially since I could not stop talking about Queried Sick. I don’t even know where to start, I loved this one so much.
Jamie is a congressman up for reelection in his home state of North Carolina and is up against a tough candidate. However, this isn’t his only source of stress. Jamie also wishes to explore his sexuality and, eventually, come out as bi. When he spots Adrian from across the bar, he knows he’s in trouble. The two of them have an instant connection - and Jamie is now positive he is attracted to both men and women. When Jamie is outed, he and his team decide to make the best of the situation and ask Adrian if he’d be willing to fake date Jamie. As the months go on, it becomes clear that fake dating may not be the best idea - their feelings are becoming too real. Will they make it? What happens if Jamie doesn’t win the election?
I have nothing but good things to say! I want so much more from this duo because I really connected with the anxiety and burnout both characters experienced - which is sad, but it makes me feel less alone. If you’re looking for a feel-good book that will make you want the same relationship they do, PLEASE read this one!!

I am a little sad to say that I really didn’t enjoy this one. I thought there were some parts of this that were done really well. I particularly liked Adrian’s anxiety and how it felt real. I thought it translated well on page. I also liked the friendship between Casey and Adrian. Oh and the supportive parents on all sides! But that was the best part of the story for me.
The rest of it was a bit off. I had a nagging feeling reading this that I’d read something like it before, and another reviewer pointed it out and I can’t unsee it now. It definitely has a lot of similar themes and scenes to another book surrounding politics and queerness.
I know this is an ARC but there were also several phrases repeated throughout the book (deadpanned, blowing out a frustrated breath, et ) that were distracting. It also wrapped up way too quickly - the third act conflict barely had time to be introduced before it was resolved.
Unfortunately this one was not for me, but I appear to be an outlier as many love it!

I loved this book. I’ve been a fan of Dallas Smith since Queried Sick and couldn’t wait to read the new and improved Bi-Partisan (I mean, how do you make it better? Answer: an extra 20K words)
I should not have been worried. I adored this just as much if not more this time around. The anxiety rep, the characters, the hope. It was all there and more!

I think we need to bring back books that have playlists in them.
No, seriously. I fucking love it. Each of the chapters in this book starts with a song and… my god were they on point.
I had the honor of receiving an ARC of Dallas Smith’s recent republication of Bi-Partisan, a swoony M/M contemporary romance. I’d just finished Page Powars’ But I Hate Him, and I was so anxious that I wouldn’t like or enjoy this as much as I wanted to because I was feeling all romanced-out.
I was so wrong.
Smith has done nothing but surprise and thrill me. I’ve literally been reading this book in bed at night full-on BLUSHING because of Jamie and Adrian. Their romance is so, so sweet and I absolutely adored the way they began to mold to one another’s needs as their fake dating went on. I think what really sold me was that yes, it read 100% (to me, anyway), like a romcom, but it also had PLENTY of political commentary. I mean, Jamie is literally a congressman. It’d only make sense for there to be a political aspect to Smith’s writing. I absolutely loved reading Jamie rant about his republican opponent, especially because… my brain kept inserting Mitch McConnell into the text, which meant that I got to continue my hatred of that prehistoric beast through the media I love.
I knew going into Bi-Partisan that there would be mental health representation, especially in the form of anxiety, but I don’t think I was expecting it to be so prevalent to the story itself. I, much like Adrian, have generalized anxiety disorder, and so it was very nice to see a pretty accurate representation of what the disorder can look like. I think that sometimes, when authors give mental health disorders to their characters, they’re just adding them to give texture to the people they’ve created. Dallas Smith used Adrian’s GAD in a more meaningful way. It didn’t just add texture, it gave him depth, and serves as a reason for a lot of his actions.
Jamie and Adrian aside, the rest of the cast was so lovely. I’m honestly hoping to see them in the rest of the District Love series, but if not… Dallas, please write their stories! I want to know more about them all! Mina might’ve been my favorite.
And, before I end my review: it is very obvious that Smith did her research. This book was filled with so much political jargon (not hard to follow at all, might I add, because Jamie does a fantastic job of making it easier to understand if you’re unfamiliar with the way the US government works) and government policies or rules that it was impossible to forget that one of the main characters is a literal congressman. I think it’d be fairly easy to just do some quick Googling to make shit work, but it’s so obvious that Dallas Smith really went all out to make sure shit made sense. Big ups.

First, I'll list the things I liked. Both the MCs are very likable. Jamie is a nice, genuine politician. His struggle with trying to understand his bisexual feelings is totally relatable. I love that he tries to think of others, and he tries to always check in with Adrian and his anxiety.
Adrian is an introvert veterinarian who does better with animals than people. But he shows how well therapy has helped him through some stuff. He is gentle with Jamie, always asking for consent and understanding that he is the first man he's been with. He shows concern about Jamie's health and stress levels.
I love fake dating! Jamie needing to make this one night stand look like a legitimate relationship made sense. I understand that the men had busy lifestyles and I always like reading texts in a book. But I really needed them to fake date a little longer. I needed them to be together in person more often. Even if they were falling for each other from day one, I needed to feel a little more drama over the fake dating plot.
Then, when they started to be together for real, I felt like Adrian was still a little too closed off. With this being Jamie's first relationship with a man, I feel like he would have felt a little more vulnerable. So, while I felt their chemistry and loved the spicy scenes, I think we needed even more personal interactions from them.
I feel like this book would have benefited either by editing a little and making it a short story or making it longer with more relationship development. I especially feel like the ending was abrupt, and I need some of my questions answered. Maybe an epilogue would have been nice. I did see the author saying this was book one in a series, so maybe we will see this couple more in future books. If the sequels involve the guys friends, like Casey and Sophie getting together or a sapphic romance with Mina, I will happily try those.
I do have to state the obvious. When I started this book, I got RWRB vibes. Southern politician, brunette, figuring out his bi-ness. Blonde, introvert gay man, closed off to love. Visiting home town's, meeting family and friends, and fighting the media and evil politicians and their "traditional values." It was hard not to make the comparisons. But as the book went on, I thought it differentiated itself enough to not make me feel like I was reading a rip-off. But I have seen some people say the comparisons were too much for them. I don't think that's a reason not to recommend this book, though. I think lots of people will really like the characters and not think twice about the tropes being a little too much like another very famous book. I like this authors voice and hope to read more about these characters, I just hope the stories are a little more developed and edited in future endeavors.
If you like the tropes, I'd say to still give the book a try.

I did see the author saying this was book one in a series, so maybe we will see this couple more in future books. If the sequels involve the guys friends, like Casey and Sophie getting together or a sapphic romance with Mina, I will happily try those.
I do have to state the obvious. When I started this book, I got RWRB vibes. Southern politician, brunette, figuring out his bi-ness. Blonde, introvert gay man, closed off to love. Visiting home town's, meeting family and friends, and fighting the media and evil politicians and their "traditional values." It was hard not to make the comparisons. But as the book went on, I thought it differentiated itself enough to not make me feel like I was reading a rip-off. But I have seen some people say the comparisons were too much for them. I don't think that's a reason not to recommend this book, though. I think lots of people will really like the characters and not think twice about the tropes being a little too much like another very famous book. I like this authors voice and hope to read more about these characters, I just hope the stories are a little more developed and edited in future endeavors.
If you like the tropes, I'd say to still give the book a try.

✨ I was so eager to get my eyes on Dallas Smith’s second novel, BI-PARTISAN, after loving her debut, QUERIED SICK, that I signed up to be a pre-reader (alpha? beta?). I forget, but I won’t forget this book. And it’s out today (9 June 2024)!!
🇺🇸First, you must be aware that I love U.S. politics, especially Washington, D.C., politics. And I especially love reading a romance about politics in the middle of a presidential election cycle. That said, this is not about presidential politics, thank goodness.
🏛️It is about congressional politics - you know, those poor folks in the U.S. House of Representatives who serve two-year terms and have to get re-elected during the last 6-9 months of each term? It’s a hard job on top of a hard job!
🗳️Second, it’s called BI-PARTISAN, my favorite kind of partisan. 🩷⚖️💜⚖️💙
🍸Enter an earnest, dedicated, liberal first-term congressman from North Carolina, Jamie Montgomery, who works hard at his job and is figuring out his personal life - he’s questioning. At a bar that I want to go to but doesn’t exist IRL (yet), The Velvet Gimlet, Jamie meets and leaves with sweet veterinarian Adrian Wilks, and then paparazzi and social media and so-called “journalism” gets involved, and well, Jamie is forced to come out as bi. For PR-type (and real) reasons, Jamie asks Adrian to be his “fake” boyfriend. Adrian agrees, because, well, they actually kinda like each other. Note: this is handled kindly and sensitively by the characters.
⚡️It’s not ideal, of course, but there’s a real spark, and, from there, the shenanigans ensue.
⚠️Let me say that there are the normal political things that happen - although I stress here that being forced to come out is NOT normal - and then there is how these things play out with MCs who have anxiety issues, panic attacks, chronic illness, a job in politics (including a homophobic opponent), a job as a vet (including the hard things that entails). This relationship is complex before it began.
🫠But these guys each have amazing support systems - friends, parents, co-workers, pets, and more. And each other. Adrian is Jamie’s “darlin’” and Jamie is Adrian’s “baby.” 🥹
📘Let me tell you about a few more fun aspects of this book: its dual, mostly-alternating POV; there’s a soundtrack (each song is listed at the top of a chapter); and there’s a dicktionary (a guide to spicy bits in case one wants to avoid them - or find them, for that matter)!
📕Friends, this is a fun, funny, insightful, contemporary romance. It’s well-written and well-paced and is very attentive to the reader. I can’t wait to get my hands on the actual book when I meet Dallas irl at Lavender Con at the end of this month (June 2024)!

When questioning Congressman Jamie goes to a gay club to unwind and test out if he actually is bi, he meets quiet, anxious veterinarian Adrian. The attraction is instant, leading to them leaving together. The next morning they wake up to an article in a DC paper outing Jamie with photos, but not identifying Adrian. Jamie is running for reelection from a newly redistricted area, and is concerned about the fallout of a supposed one night stand so his team comes up with the idea of Jamie and Adrian acting as boyfriends until after the election. After some soul searching and some serious anxiety, Adrian agrees to be Jamie’s fake boyfriend. Thus begins the up and down tale of being convincing fake boyfriends as feelings grow and a crumbling “fake” relationship changes to a real relationship between newly-identified bi Jamie and definitely gay introvert Adrian. Nothing about the relationship goes really smoothly, Adrian must cope with panic attacks and self-doubts about relationships in general and this one specifically, while Jamie works to make things as easy for Adrian as his boyfriend, juggling all the responsibilities of his office in DC and his constituents at home while weathering innuendos from his opponent. Both men are supported by their female best friends, other friends and campaign staff, as well as parents as they spend the next several months continuing the facade while the real feelings grow.
It’s a story with anxiety for both men, self-doubts for Adrian, campaign stresses, too many hours working for both and not enough time to be together and talk, visits to Jamie’s district, goats, debates and election nerves, and two men finding something neither was looking for but really needed in their lives —each other. Jamie and Adrian were realistic relatable characters navigating a political minefield which could have blown up in their faces, realizing things about themselves and each other, taking a chance for something lasting. The political tension reflected the atmosphere of today and mentioned some of the talking points for both sides, with Jamie representing the Democratic point of view and his opponent the Republican view, making it feel very relevant and timely. World building was good for the world of both characters, and events were realistic, making for a relevant and entertaining read. I received an ARC from the author and this is my voluntary review.
