This is a fantasy LitRPG series featuring a system apocalypse that happens on Earth. Layton is a college student on a camping trip when Earth gets inducted into the system. By being a smartass during induction he accidentally picks the healer class, skips the tutorial, and starts his initial trial without any gear. He ends up getting rewarded for this and is mostly saved through an alliance with a mountain lion. After that it gets into human interaction with elements of town building and faction building. Layton is a likable character that prefers diplomacy over conflict and he also makes some believable mistakes.

Layton ends up quite overpowered but I would argue a lot of stems from his barrier spell that he seems to be able to cast on himself and everyone else in order to prevent damage. It seems overly strong at least at early levels. The progression system was good though it does seem like everyone levels quickly. And more that once there were events that seemed undesirable but ended up being extremely profitable in terms of progression and wealth.

I read book 1 on Kindle then read book 2 and the start of book 3 on Royal Road. I enjoyed this series and will be happy to reread it when it is completed.

Great start to a series

I knew that this book was going to be good when there were too things occurring in the beginning that rarely happen. First, it shows a very positive father-son interaction and second, stupid millennial snark is punished quite severely. Kudos to the author for both.

Story is interesting - reasonably standard apocalypse but with enough twists and turns to make things more fun. Characters are all interesting, or least compelling, and the relationships keep things moving along.

Nits - would like to see more numbers-go-up but honestly, it wasn’t too bad. Also, I would almost remove the ‘reveal’ chapter - something like 54 or 55; I understand the point but I think it’s more powerful without it

Very good kick slip break out

Very well done..... Some of the pov shifts were abrupt and often but they worked over they rolled out and great story and characters and it wasn't a repeat of combat healer trope... Beautifully done

Good New Series

Enjoyed this take on a healer book. Story was well written and kept me engaged start to finish. MC is a bit naive, but someone you can get behind and root for. Looking forward to what happens next!

I liked the dual class. The start of how he became OP was funny. The antagonists were not that believable. They were written to be bad people. I felt like since time was spent on their backgrounds, I wish there was some more depth to them. That being said, I enjoyed their inevitable beatdown.

An ok read, but nothing fantastic. While I didn't dislike the book, I did find the title somewhat misleading. Sure the MC has a healer class, but he doesn't do much with the healing aspect and as with many books like this the class evolves. I found that him having a healer class, which others can see by his clothing, was more a gimmick to allow others to underestimate him (healer = weak). The characters are ok for the most part. I was quite annoyed with the first other perspective when it was introduced, since it seemed like the book would branch out to multiple POVs. Luckily it didn't do that too much. The worldbuilding is okish, but I found some of the reasoning for certain events somewhat lacking (e.g. MCs party composition).

All in all, I might get the second book but it's not a given with this series. It didn't interest me enough for that.

I could not finish this.
The story is okay. The main problem? The main character. Whiny and a complainer; but fate/lucky keeps saving his annoying behind. The guy makes impulsive decisions and if it was any other person, the guy would have died a million times over. However, deus ex machina is set to max for the accidental healer. Even still, he complains when everything gets handed to him. Really reads like something from online light novel...where the authors keeps making stuff up to fit the plot and continue the story. The MC just entered battle? Good news, as he knows martial arts. The MC needs to know a skill to save him life? Guess what, he knows how and he learned it at boy's scout. The MC is a messy impulsive loser. Was a loser before the system and continues to be one after the system.

DNF. The author and his main character are oversharers. The initial set up is always awkward in this kind of books, but this one is extra generous with superfluous information, plus the author went inexplicably out of his way to make MC to be a moron. When the people show up, again MC is sharing too much for no good reason. It's very annoying.

I really enjoyed the book. The characters don't always act in the ways you would expect and I like the relationships that they developed. It was fun and exciting. The story does grow and adds depth. It was also nice to get some the perspectives of other characters along the way.

I'll put book 2 on my To Be Read list.

Omg this would be so much better if the mc would stop whining good lord he couldn't stop running his mouth and ended up screwing himself over then he's whining because it's to hard and now he keeps whining because its not hard enough he's kind of annoying but I loved the cat 😉 but the loot is really lame though the story is boring and predictable DNF

Great story; really loved it from the start. MC is not a dumbass for a change. Great character building and introducing other characters was well done. Really looking forward to the next book, and awesomely narrated.

The MC is a really nice guy filled with angst on his decisions and constantly questioning his motives and actions. It’s exhausting! I want a fun story not a psychological story on a complete lack of self confidence. It as ok at first but he never improves uggh Hard Pass on book 2

Wonderful addition to the LitRPG genre with great characters and interesting world-building. I really enjoy an optimistic MC, since there aren't that many in the genre that stick with it.
