A century’s-long family feud turns deadly when the malicious Andrew boys threaten the Fosbecks over a diary from 1881.
When Kyle Fosbeck goes missing, his grandmother hires Owen to help find him.
Many people die and get kidnapped including Street, Owen’s girlfriend.
The malicious Andrew boys keep the tension high in another outstanding, nail biting, difficult-to-put-down Todd Borg masterpiece.
You always learn so many things when you read Todd’s books. His knowledge is vast, and we always get treated to interesting topics.
If you haven’t read any of his books, you are missing out all around and especially his detailed descriptions of places and people.
You will also get to visit with all the familiar, lovable characters in his books. 5/5
Thank you to the author for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Review
Ninety-year-old Hazel Fosbeck’s grandson, Kyle, went missing and she thinks his disappearance is connected to a 150-year-old diary he had found hidden in her primitive cabin. It mentioned a “treasure’ in the rocks in the Sand Harbor mountains east of Lake Tahoe where Hazel still lives in the family hand-me-down cabin. The diary was written in 1883 by a Chinese teenaged cook at the family sawmill.
To back track, Hazel’s great, great grandfather, Jeremiah Fosbeck and his friend, Robert Andrew, settled in the Tahoe wilderness in the 1870s. Fosbeck opened a sawmill and Andrew was a gold miner. Eventually the two families became enemies after the tragic accidental death of an Andrew daughter. They blamed her suitor, a young Fosbeck boyfriend, and hatred replaced the friendship.
Hazel thinks the three Andrew brothers are behind his disappearance. They are known to be tough area thugs. Enter Tahoe sleuth Owen McKenna whom Hazel hired to look for Kyle. While McKenna, his Harlequin Great Dane, Spot, and Sgt. Martinez investigate, potential witnesses also begin to disappear, seemingly drowned in the lake. Owen was almost one of them but miraculously escaped.
This thriller has several unexpected twists before the exciting perilous climax in which odds of survival for Owen, kidnapped girlfriend, Street Casey, Hazel, Kyle, and Spot seem next to impossible.
Tahoe Fear is #24 in the Owen McKenna mystery series and is again presented to us in Todd Borg’s masterful style, making for a fun page-turner! And by-the-way there is a second surprise ending you will not see coming! Enjoy!

BEST TAHOE BOOK YET
The beginning of the book, and supposed crime, starts out one way, then takes sharp and unexpected turns. All of our favorite characters are there, and a particularly wonderful new one is introduced. Hazel is one of the most endearing and fascinating characters I’ve read about in a long time. Love her knowledge about the indigenous people of Tahoe, and all the changes/events of the late 1800s and early 1900s.
As always, Spot (His Largeness) is the BEST, and I still want Diamond as my best friend.
A sequence of events, where Owen is in grave danger, and then Street, proves just how resourceful and brave he is. Readers will find themselves cheering him on to victory.
As the tale unfolds, Owen has his hands full, trying to suss out why people are going missing, how do all the characters connect, what the reason is behind all the drama, so many questions. And, of course, Owen being Owen, figures it all out in a grand conclusion. Then, in the final chapters of the book, a magnificent surprise occurs, literally will bring tears. Perfection.
Todd Borg has the ability to describe the surroundings in such a way, that the reader can picture themselves on scene. One other writer I was very fond of, Tony Hillerman, had the same great talent.

Todd Borg's "Tahoe Fear" (2026), contrary to its title, was actually delightful to read. Private Investigator Owen McKenna meets Hazel Fosbeck, a 91 year old, spry and interesting native of Lake Tahoe, who has lived seasonally in a rustic cabin on the north eastern mountain ridge most of her life. Her grandson, Kyle has gone missing. McKenna and his Harlequin Great Dane, Spot, Douglas County Sargent Diamond Martinez and other friends are off on another interesting adventure, with many harrowing events and twists.
I enjoy each and every one of Todd Borg's books, as there is always something new and interesting I learn (no spoiler!), fun and lovable characters, an exciting mystery to solve, all on the backdrop of beautiful, many faceted Lake Tahoe and it's surrounding communities.
I especially enjoyed this story as Hazel Fosbeck is a woman after my own heart. In her advanced years, she is still independent, intelligent, still fit and skilled in her abilities to drive an ancient Willy's, a positive and competent personality one can aspire to be like at that age. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode in the Owen McKenna Tahoe Mystery Series.

July 23, 2026Todd Borg is an amazing story teller and he has the ability to make you feel like you are right there with him in all of his adventures! They are always exciting...and they sometimes get him into scary predicaments, making you wonder how he will get out of this one.
He always includes interesting topographical information for the area in and around Lake Tahoe that most people are not aware of. I also love that he uses the same main characters in his stories so you are familiar with them. Having been a former Police Officer, and now a Private Investigator, makes his stories even more exciting because he now has a different set of rules to abide by since he is no longer a "sworn" Police Officer.
I especially loved the ending of Tahoe Fear as it was a "good tear-jerker." I won't spoil it for those of you who have not read it yet, but if you are a fan of Todd Borg, you will understand when you read it!

amazing
Another amazing installment of Owen McKenna mysteries! I could not put this one down, who needs sleep when you just must stay awake to know the complete story :)
The mysteries, the education regarding lake cruises, boats, electronics, rocks and minerals… the friendships and fabulous characters we know and love, appear and are big pieces of this story.
(Run on sentences happen when I’m tired, forgive me)
Todd Borg fascinates me with his fun mysteries full of depth, heart, DOGS and interesting characters.
Don’t wait to pick this one up and read it!
Now, Todd, I’m a greedy reader, how long must I wait for the next installment? Hehe. I’ll go back to the beginning and read them all again while I impatiently wait ;)~

As a long-time fan of Todd Borg's Owen McKenna books, I'm constantly amazed by his ability to work so much history of the Lake Tahoe area into his stories-- and by how he can create so many memorable characters.
In Tahoe Fear, Borg really ratchets up the adrenaline. There are two kidnappings in the book, and the first really had me biting my nails. Not that the second one didn't concern me. It did. But I knew nothing was going to happen to the person (or there would be dire consequences from readers). The first one, though, actually raised my heart rate. I'm normally not easily affected, but the feeling of danger was palpable.
90-year-old Hazel Fosbeck was an excellent addition to the cast of characters. She's a law unto herself, and although I thought my husband was the best driver of off-road vehicles, Hazel and her 1943 Willys left him in her dust.
The mystery in Tahoe Fear was multi-layered with plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing. As always, the characters shone brightly, and the dog lovers will enjoy Spot and the added information about canine scenting abilities.
If you haven't made Owen McKenna's acquaintance yet, you really should-- especially if you love character-driven stories with plenty of action. Normally, I would advise first-timers to begin at the beginning, but I can understand why some people would hesitate to do that with a (so far) 24-book series. The important thing is to meet these characters and to experience the Lake Tahoe setting. If you're hooked (as I'm sure you will be), you can always go back to the other books. You'll have lots of good reading waiting for you.

I loved this book. I could not put it down. As usual, I end up learning many new things when I read a Todd Borg book. In addition, the twists and turns were what kept me reading, not wanting to put it down. I like the addition of new permanent characters and the ending made me smile. I just love Owen (and Spot, of course). Now that I have a Great Dane grand dog (not a Harlequin), I really enjoy the descriptors of Spot as I picture my grand dog, Luna doing some of those same things. Great book, Todd!

July 26, 2026Once again Todd Borg has done it in Tahoe Fear. This is one of those books you don't put down till after the last page, regardless of the hour. I don't need to list all the elements that make a thriller good; this has them all. As a 90 year old myself, I was of course drawn to a pair of similar aged heroines. Add this to recovering abducted dear ones and solving murders and the reader can't go wrong. This keeps good company to the other 23 of Mr. Borg's which I have also read.

Highly recommend Todd Body's books.
They are interesting, full of facts about the locations and are great mysteries. His characters are normal and believable. I have really enjoyed reading all of his books as I grew up in one of the towns he uses regularly and have spent quite a bit of Tim in Lake Tahoe. It is so fun to relive and picture those places again. Keep them coming, Todd.

A other masterpiece!
Todd Borg lays out a great story with tidbits of trivia and knowledge. Tahoe Fear is no different. For me, it's always the same.....I can't stop turning pages, but I don't want the book to end. Great work Mr. Borg! I just wish you could churn out books more frequently.....

Tahoe Fear is a fast moving read involving a tall P.I. and his Great Dane Spot, a spry older lady, a young deaf child and a trusted friend who is also a deputy. This book is intriguing and keeps you wondering what’s coming next. An interesting thing about dogs and rocks is mentioned. The beginning catches your attention immediately and the ending is a real wow!!

Todd Borg, my favorite author with his Tahoe Mystery Series, is my most loved thriller series. I found myself having to stop my reading in terror to catch my breath before I could continue. This year’s episode finds me in twists and turns I would never have expected. My only disappointment is when the book had to end. Carry on Owen and Spot - I love you!

Todd Borg just keeps getting and better. Each story line is new and fresh. Lots of research goes into each and every book. And Spot, the wonder dog, always adds to the story. I can hardly wait for July or August when a new Owen McKenna mystery is released.

Another great episode in the life of Owen McKenna
Once again, Todd doesn't disappoint. I sadly found this one a bit slow to start but once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. I loved the entire story and found it very interesting. I also loved the ending!!

Todd has another winner
I've read all of the Tahoe series, also own all of them. Todd is an excellent story teller and also generates information in each book that is fascinating, but it is part of the plot. I'm also a Great Dane owner, which is also a great reason to enjoy Todd's stories. I tried to take my time to read each book, but the story just flows and I'm finished before I realize it. My relief is going back to read the earlier books, which is just as enjoyable as the first time. Todd is my favorite fiction author.
