WHAT YOU SEE IS A LIE

"As I walked further into the alley, a chill that had nothing to do with the night air crystalized like frost beneath my skin. Isabel was kind of tall for a girl, but there was no mistaking Stephen's taller frame. I grabbed Izzy's arm and jerked her into the light. She slumped to the ground sideways, her dark hair spilling across the alley floor.
The other figure stepped into the dim light. Stephen smiled, and licked blood from his lips."

Emily Glass thought a move to Atlanta was just what she needed to jump start a new life. But after her roommate and best friend is attacked by a man with superhuman strength, she discovers an underworld to Atlanta she never expected.

Recruited by a strange organization with an enigmatic agenda to help apprehend the attacker, she soon finds herself doing strange side jobs for them. To make things more complicated, the boss at her day job expresses romantic interest. Despite her misgivings, she finds him irresistible and senses that, like Atlanta, there may be a lot more to the man than what she sees on the surface.

Unfortunately, there are secret organizations that know his true nature and will stop at nothing to capture him and destroy everything they have.

I absolutely must disclose that I am:

1. John Corwin's #1 Book Pimp
2. Part of his 'Unicornettes' beta reading team
3. Am gifted with early electronic copies in exchange for my honest thoughts

With that out of the way... there are so many things that made me oh-so-happy in this book. It's only very, very loosely 'connected' to the Overworld Chronicles, you if you haven't read Sweet Blood of Mine (Overworld Chronicles, #1) by John Corwin or the rest of the series, but do enjoy New Adult Paranormal Romance, this may interest you. If you're already a reader of the Overworld Chronicles and want a more adult-flavored story, then you should definitely be interested.

Every time I want to elaborate on this book, it ends up in a spoilery place... and that's half the fun with this book: figuring out just where this thorny path ends up and what Emily meets along the way. Well, instead of a thorny path it's more of an 'urban city'- so it is an urban fantasy - but it's most definitely a romance as well. Emily is young, and naive, and totally wet behind the ears and practically blind to some things, but surprisingly perceptive in other situations. And she has an unhealthy obsession with ice cream and chocolate and Nutella... but as that describes many, many women out there I suppose it's not a big stretch.

What can I say... I'm smitten. Totally smitten with this book. Perhaps some hot flashes came along with reading it, can't deny that.

Emily made me laugh, thinking she was just strange and not getting that she could sense the supernatural, trying to rationalize the feelings she got, even when presented with a vampire. Got to say Tyler trying to get back to Emily is really sweet, her reaction to his news was very dramatic. And her parents, I knew there was something odd about what she said about them, I suspected early on.
John Corwin is an amazing writer who has tru;y created an even more amazing world.

Another great read

I have become relentless in reading all the books from John Corwin, and although I usually love POV of both main characters. I have made a exception for these stories because the creativity used gives a great deal of useful information. It has all the elements the other books have, funny, sad, Intriguing and captivating. Bravo

This is so slow I was so bored. I listened to the audiobook and they had a narrator doing a Jane Austin book it was stupid. I get so annoyed when they do that because English people don’t talk like that especially one who supposedly had lived in the US for almost a decade.

Another winner!

Another great story line from Cordon. Emily is a great character that I believe will get even better as the series rolls on.

John Corwin has a way with words. Very engaging. Another aspect of the Overworld that is from a woman's point of view.

Unexpected

I liked the book and the premise a lot, I gave it only four stars because it was not well balanced between commentary and actual action. It also lacked more explanation to Tyler's world and companies and his family. John Corwin is a very talented writer and I look forward to the next book in the series hoping it will close the gaps concerning Emily and Tyler and their world and their introduction to the overworld/underworld.

Interesting ideas but...

I didn't expect the softcore aspect. I would think it's possible to write a story of this type without all the detailed biological shenanigans. I get it. Girl meets demon. Girl lists after demon. Demon is a sexual superstar.... Big deal. I'm looking for supernatural stories not sex between an ingenue and a nice guy demon who apparently is built like Mister Ed (for those too young to remember, Ed was a horse)'

Otherwise, it was a good story.

As a big fan of John Corwin's Overworld series, I was pretty excited to pick up this book. Unfortunately it's nothing like the Overworld series. This book is a romance novel . . . barf! That said, I still liked the plot and it had some good writing and humor.

Just not that great, especially compared to previous books by the author. I feel like Corwin was trying too hard to write a woman protagonist instead of writing a protagonist that happened to be a woman. I'll give the second book a try and hope it is better.

Good Book

I have read the rest of the Overworld chronicles and the Conrad Edison Books so i figured i would learn more about Emily’s story. I would suggest reading this before Apocalyphan Rising

Not my style

A little too much raunchy sex for my tastes. Was a tough one for me. I love the author and the overall story, just wish he had left out all the unnecessary erotica.
