She was never meant to escape.

Before Caspian Vayne, the notorious Captain of the Bloodmarked, purchases her for his crew's entertainment, Rohen Levitte is an elite assassin. Always unwillingly chained to another man, she finds herself craving freedom, something the open sea gives her a taste of. Folding herself into the incapable woman she wants them to believe she is, a dark and stormy night grants her the opportunity to escape into the hands of Caspian’s ex-best friend, Alastair Seridean, the Captain of the rival crew, Scarlet Tempest.

Caspian Vayne, a man purchased from the underground markets and trained by the corrupt king, barely grasps the reins of freedom. Branded by the Royal Crest, his damned past litters his skin along with the scars he’s earned. Carrying knowledge he cannot share, he is not unfamiliar with betrayal, but the night Rohen Levitte slaughters half of his crew, a newfound hatred blooms.

As the hunt continues for the legendary Eyes of Ellira—a Damned goddess who once commanded the sea—and the power they hold, the two destined by fate clash as deceit pollutes the veins of the Capital. While the humans battle for power, the Damned, gods who fell in love with humans and were cast out, and the Others, sinister beings who divided divinity in two, are at war for control.

Will Rohen and Caspian uncover their lineage before it is too late? One thing is certain. The sea will remember her. And Caspian Vayne will regret the day he ever touched a blade of the king.

Asher’s debut into dark fantasy was absolutely mind blowing. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to ARC read Cast From the Dark, and cannot wait for more in this series.

The world building and character development are equally well done. Each of the MCs, as well as secondary characters are more than surface deep, and Asher does an amazing job of making you fall for them and relate to their endeavors and pasts.

With twists, turns and buried secrets as the plot unfurls, I was left gasping and guessing. I am so excited to see what is in store next.

First, thank you for the ARC — I’m so grateful to have had the chance to read this ahead of its May 19th publication.

If you love your fantasy dark, emotional, and a little feral (in the best way), Cast from the Dark absolutely delivers. This dark fantasy throws you straight into a brutal, immersive world filled with assassins, pirates, dangerous magic, and unforgettable feminine rage.
Rohen and Caspian are true enemies to… something more. And when I say enemies, I mean real tension! mistrust, sharp edges, and chemistry that feels almost dangerous. Their dynamic is layered, messy, and completely addictive. Add in that high spice level 🌶🌶🌶🌶 and the slow burn tension hits even harder.

The world building is rich and atmospheric, you can practically taste the salt air and feel the danger simmering beneath every alliance. Twists are woven throughout, keeping the stakes high and the tension tight. This story also dives into heavy trauma, so definitely check trigger warnings before going in.
And that ending? A full, unapologetic cliffhanger that will have you desperate for book two.

If you’re into dark fantasy with morally gray characters, enemies to lovers tension on the high seas, and a story fueled by vengeance, vulnerability, and rage, this is for you.

What a great start to this dark fantasy series. Asher is so good at creating deeply complex characters who are flawed and morally grey in the best way possible. I was completely hooked by every single one of them.

Rohan was easily one of my favorite — a fierce assassin FMC who refuses to back down. And Caspian? A morally grey pirate captain. They are somehow bound together, yet true enemies. Definitely not lovers… at least not yet.

The world-building was immersive and detailed, especially the pirate elements that gave the story such a dark and dangerous theme. There were twists I didn’t see coming, along with heartbreaking moments that genuinely shocked me. Somehow Asher always knows exactly how to destroy me emotionally when I least expect it.

From beginning to end, this book takes you on a wild journey and ends with a cliffhanger. I honestly have no idea where this series is headed, but I cannot wait to find out.

Such a strong start to this dark fantasy romance series! The second this book threw me onto the blood soaked seas with assassins, rival crews, cursed gods, and morally questionable people making catastrophic decisions, I was seated.
The world building was immersive without feeling overwhelming, and the political tension, buried secrets, and lore kept unraveling like a cursed treasure map drenched in seawater and bad choices. Every time I thought I had a handle on where things were going, another twist rolled in like a storm wave to the face.

Rohen was easily one of my favorite parts of the story. She’s dangerous and carrying enough trauma to sink a ship, but still manages to feel layered and human beneath all the bloodshed.
Caspian meanwhile is an absolute disaster captain in the very best way possible. Their relationship is messy, hostile, emotionally charged, and had me constantly wondering if they were going to kiss or end each other. Sometimes both felt equally possible.
I also really appreciated that the side characters felt fleshed out instead of existing purely as background decoration. Everyone seemed to have their own motives, secrets, and scars, which made the world feel alive.
Definitely check trigger warnings going in because this is a dark fantasy and trauma is heavily present throughout the story.

That cliffhanger shoved me directly overboard and now I’ll be waiting impatiently for book two with the rest of the feral sea creatures.

If you love a world of pirates, false and meddling gods, prophecies, world building, morally grey characters, mysteries to solve, sweet tender moments wrecked by heartache, and a heck of a cliff hanger then this needs to be added to your tbr.

Though check your triggers this is a dark fantasy and the characters various traumas are mentioned frequently. Both talking about it and flash backs.

This book takes you on a journey and it all really comes together nicely at the end aside from the mean cliffhanger the author has left us with.

Caspian and Rohen have quite the tumultuous relationship in this book. It’s an enemies to something storyline that kept me guessing to the point where I was questioning if they’d start to turn it around in this book. Wondering if they do? Then check it out for yourself.

Thank you Asher for the ARC of your book!

I’ve been wanting a good spicy pirate 🏴‍☠️ story ever since watching Black Sails on Netflix, and Cast from the Dark delivers.

Rohen is bought by Caspian Vayne, a ruthless pirate for the use of his crew members. She wakes up on his ship, forced to save him. Then a dark and stormy night she’s able to escape to Alistairs ( Caspian’s ex best friend) ship; not before slaughtering 1/2 of Caspian’s crew.
This book has everything you want in a story about pirates, rival crews, battles, there’s feminine rage, there’s spicy 🌶️ scenes. The prologue had me HOOKED. One of the first scenes we see Rohen in, the gasp I gasped I was like “Dang girl!”
Caspian Vayne is so sexy you’ll want to jump his bones. If you love any of those things, grab this book when it comes out on May 19th

I am so lucky to have gotten a chance to read this arc! I greatly enjoyed this book. Chapter one alone starts off with having me at a loss for words. That exalted quickly and I am here for it. This is a dark fantasy so please be sure to check the trigger warnings. There are pirates, false gods, secrets that are revealed as the plot goes along and twists I didn’t see coming. The characters have depth and are complex. Even side characters are likable and not just there to fill a spot. I would definitely recommend this book and I can’t wait to see where this series goes from here.

First off, this book does come with some trigger warnings, so you should be prepared.

This book has pirates, mystery & intrigue and a ton of trauma.

The world building was phenomenal, our FMC, Rohen, is a force to reckon with and our MMC, Caspian is very complex. If you like an enemies to lovers trope that is steamy and action packed, this book is for you.

That cliff hanger though! 😲😲😲

Thank you to Asher D Payne for allowing me to read this eArc in exchange for my honest opinion

Arc Review

“I will kill you as soon as the opportunity presents itself.” He smirked, his swoon-worthy smile lines making their increasingly annoying appearance. “Is that a promise, little siren?” “It’s a fucking vow.”

“She was intoxicating and just as fiery as I was; I wanted nothing more than for our blazes to join so we could watch the world burn beneath us. She’d become the single most irreplaceable treasure on my ship, for there was a reason I called her my siren: she’d drawn me in with her melodic essence the moment I laid my eyes on her.”

Thank you very much for the author for sending me an early copy of her book! I devoured it, I loved it a LOT!

Oh how much I loved this read is beyond words!
First of all read the TW because it’s dark and if you feel comfortable with them make sure to read it! You are guaranteed an amazing time with the crew!
I have loved everything about this book! It was written brilliantly!
There were tension, meddling gods, prophecy, hunger for power and treasure hunt.
It’s not only a pirate story about a treasure hunt, there is also a prophecy about overturning gods and the whole time reading the book I was on edge.

The multiple POV made this story so complex but to the point of confusion.
The characters were all amazing! It is so hard to choose my favourite one. It is really thanks to the multiple POV that I felt so close to all of them.

The FMC Rohen is the textbook type of my favourite FMC. She was fierce, unyielding and so funny. She also has lots of trauma from her past which made her so strong. She is also an assassin! Amazing character!

The MMC Caspian was everything! Just like our FMC he is dealing with abuse and trauma from his past. He was ruthless, dark, complex and sooooooo desirable. I would be a happy woman just staying on his ship for the rest of my days!

The dynamics between the FMC and MMC was done so very well! They were truly enemies to lovers (perhaps in book 2?🤭)!
They have tried to unalive each other throughout the entire book and I loved it! Their banter and the length of which they were trying to unalive each other were amazingly done!

The characters were not only fierce and ruthless but also so extremely funny! I can see the author has amazing sense of humour and personality because the banter were not forced or too much or cringy at all. It felt natural and was so genius.

Favourite side character? How about all of them?! I honestly can’t choose! Weather it was Caspian’s second in command or his ex best friend who now wants to kill him or the prince who would do anything to escape from his father and live his own life… can not choose between them! It’s impossible!

Thank you again for Asher D. Payne for sending me an early copy! I loved every chapter and eagerly waiting for book2! Can it be out tomorrow? 🖤

Ok wow this book was insane in the best possible way. I was sitting on the edge of my seat, like what in the world is going to happen.

I absolutely loved the FMC Rohen, she was a total badass, like literally. The things she did in the first chapter solidified that fact that she was going to be a fav of mine! This woman has been through it she has a horrible past and is just trying to escape. She is craving freedom!

She falls into the clutches of one of the MMC's Caspian Vayne the notorious Captain of the Bloodmarked, after he purchases her for his crew's entertainment. (This man has no idea what he has gotten himself into 😂)
Caspian, now this man is 🔥I loved his character, he is a cranky badass pirate what more could you ask for. Oh and he has a nipple chain 🤭
But he also has a terrible past, he was purchased and trained by the corrupt king and branded with the royal crest.

Rohen and Caspian literally spend the entire book trying to kill each other.
I loved the nickname Caspian had for Rohen "Little Siren".

"I'd love to see your try little siren, because I would have no issue submerging you in the depths of my indignation until my essence consumed your lungs."

Rohen escapes Caspian clutches and finds herself on his ex-best friend's ship, Alastair Seridean, Captain of Scarlet Tempest.
I really enjoyed Alastair character, and his relationship with Leilani.

"If you're that aggravated with me then carve my heart from my chest, little fang. I told you it belongs to you, and I meant that utterance with every ounce of my essence." ❤️

There are so many good side characters in this book and they all brought something different to the book. Big personalities and opinions. The author makes you fall in love with all the characters.

I don't like the King or "The Others"! Enough said.

The world building in this was fantastic. Very detailed. And you get pulled in straight away.

The plot was amazing.... with SOOOO many twists and reveals!!
The last half of the book I was sitting there STRESSED not knowing what was going to happen.

That ending 🤯leaves you hanging!
I cannot wait for book 2.

Thank you so much to the Author for sending me a copy of this book 😊

Quick Reasons: pirates and political intrigue; Old Gods vs Fake Gods; intriguing world building; forced proximity; interesting take on fated mates, heavy on enemies to... something?

Huge thanks to Asher D. Payne and Iris Influencer Society for the ARC! This review is voluntarily written and in no way altered by this gesture.

When the gods fell, the world did not shatter into ruin, but into reflection. Two realms, split like a cracked mirror—one carved by sea and storm, the other by shadow and bone. Each held fragments of the same ancient power: half a heart bound to the deep, half bound to the sky. In each, a lineage survived, separated by fate but woven by the same primordial thread. Two pieces destined to tilt the balance in both realms.

Sorry not sorry, but I have to start by asking.... WHAT THE CRAP was that ending?! If you're not a fan of cliffhanger endings, know that this one is a DOOZY. What a way to keep a reader coming back for more, ending it just when all the pieces were falling into place. Now I'm here, edge of the cliff, having to wait until book 2 releases. How rude. How very dare.

But really-- this read is filled with pirates, False Gods, secrets, political intrigue, murder and mayhem. The characters and their motivations are well crafted-- they maintain heavy secrets while giving just enough for readers to feel drawn in and connected. With numerous points of view, we get to see many aspects to the same series of events-- some to make you ask more questions, others to put some of the pieces together. There's a strong sense of "enemies-to-something" in this read-- the main duo being drawn together while still wanting the other dead creating an ebb and flow of decisions. The world building is intriguing, as well-- though I don't believe we have been given all of the important pieces to unlocking the world's darkest truths just yet.

Unwavering, the words that came from him delivered a blow I wasn’t anticipating. “You cannot gift us a life of freedom if you refuse to fight for it for yourself.”

I highly recommend this to lovers of pirates, slow burn enemies to... something? reads, and interesting worlds with layers to be unraveled. The tides are rising and the Gods are watching, Penguins. Whose side will you land on?

I enjoyed Cast from the Dark and the originality of the storyline with the Damned and the Others.

The first few chapters grabbed my attention right away, and I really enjoyed the FMC. I am a sucker for a tough FMC though, so her being an assassin was right up my alley.

I enjoyed that this centers around pirates and a good portion is set at sea. There's a lot of mythology elements here that worked well, though at times were slightly confusing. I don't want to give spoilers but the overall theme of returning 'true gods' and descendants of the gods was quite interesting. And who doesn't love a good pirate tale?

Where it lost me a little though, is the repetitiveness of certain wording and aspects of the story. I understand wanting to changes things up from the typical "he said" "she said" but every single character in this book croons. The word croon is so overused it actually started irritating me and pulling me out of the story. The emphasis on some words, especially the word my also seemed really out of place on many occasions. Like there was emphasis where there really didn't need to be.

While I enjoyed the characters, there wasn't a lot of differentiation between their personalities. They were all tough, bad people who repeatedly told each other they were tough, bad people. A lot of posturing and telling everyone how bad they are, rather than just being bad and doing bad things. I wanted more show and less tell. Most of the males were basically cookie cutters of each other, with slight changes in personality but the overall cockiness of almost every character (including the females, who basically acted like the males) got a little old. There was no real dynamic changes between the characters that I felt the story desperately needed.

That being said, I did really enjoy the story itself. Several of the characters had very tragic backstories that I think really worked well in terms of development into the adults they became, and how their abusers really shaped the people they are now. The hate/lust dynamic between the MC's worked pretty well. They hate each other and they hate that they are drawn to each other.

This is a multi-POV, including side characters, which brought a different perspective and fresh element to the story as well. For the few issues I mentioned above that pulled me out of the story, I'd give this a solid 3.5.

Thank you, Asher D. Payne, for providing me with an eARC of Cast from the Dark in exchange for an honest review.

"Cast from the Dark " is a compelling dark fantasy about Gods meddling and humans left to suffer the consequences, with pirates, morally grey characters and a great plot. This book does a really good job of setting up the world and setting, introducing us to a wide range of characters, and building the mystery and the main plot. The world was dark with explicit language. Characters were definitely unlikable at times, but also compelling, and you could not help but feel and root for them.

Firstly, I really liked the setting of this book - a world divided by the gods, with false gods meddling and ruling, whilst the real gods are forgotten. I liked the world-building with the Damned, the Others, and all the lore around the children of the gods, the prophecy and the motivations of the Others. It was an interesting premise, and it was well utilised by the author - I am looking forward to learning more about what happened in the past and how Rohen and Caspian will work together to get rid of the Evil lurking.

I also really liked the characters - it was interesting considering all the characters (almost) had complex relationships with each other, with past betrayals and allegiances, childhood relationships turned sour, and overall, it was interesting to follow all the different characters and to uncover all the layers of complexity between all of them. It made the book messy as the characters' relationship evolved, but it was fun to follow.

In many ways, this book felt like just the beginning, as if it were setting up the world of the Marked by the Deep series, which made the story less addictive but still interesting. It was a bit repetitive in parts, with dialogues that did not fully flow well for my liking. Still, overall, it's a strong first instalment of the series, and I am definitely intrigued by the story and how it will evolve.

This was such a strong start to a dark fantasy series. Rival pirate captains, enemies filled with tension, fallen gods, queer representation, political intrigue, vengeance fueled by feminine rage... it was no surprise I flew through this book.

The world feels massive, giving us an epic fantasy adventure packed with pirates, gods, prophecy, magic, and layered politics. The story is told through multiple POVs in first person, which admittedly I stumbled through at first since it’s been a hot minute for me reading more than a dual POV story. It took me a little time to settle into whose voice was whose, but there were tons of amazing characters to know and a few I desperately wanted more chapters from.

The writing is well paced and easy to consume, which is probably why I finished it so quickly. Overall I loved being swept through this chaotic world from so many different perspectives, it really helped paint a picture of everything happening simultaneously. Alongside all the dark fantasy elements, there’s also a strong found family vibe that I think a lot of readers will appreciate.

I will admit I was slightly disappointed that some of the romances were left simmering instead of developing more in this book *Cough* Rohan and a certain pirate captain *COUGH*, but I also understand that’s part of the draw of a fantasy series. There are multiple romance arcs woven throughout the story, and while I enjoyed them, some of them also emotionally wrecked me a little alongside the cliffhanger which wasn’t playing around.

Definitely recommending this for readers who love gritty dark fantasy stories full of pirates, morally gray characters, vengeance, found family, and high tension relationships.

I received a gifted copy of this book so I may leave my honest review.

Cast from the dark

Where do I even begin?
Thank you to @iris.influencer.society and @author.asherdpayne
for the opportunity to read and review Cast From The Dark!

This tale begins with the telling of gods, more specifically those cast out for their refusal of the status quo; thus setting the stage for our mortal characters and the trials that await them.
The ties that bind are deeper than Rohen Levitte realizes...
As we dive into our story from her perspective, Rohen is in the midst of devising her path to freedom from the clutches of the malicious Overseer of Assassins, Malrik Ravelle, when she is interrupted by fate!
Captain Caspian Vayne
A massive man with a smart mouth to rival Rohen's own, he pursues her to be used as a morale boost for his crew-but the chase ahead and their mysterious pasts lead to more unanswered questions about their strange attraction henceforth.
We witness multiple perspectives told throughout this tale, better detailing the dynamic between Captains Caspian Vayne and his ex-best friend Alastair Seridean. One betrayed by another, promised death at their next encounter.

A Prince who refuses to bow to his father's cruelty any longer, Kael Marellan, steals away upon Captain Ace's (Alastair) ship in pursuit of his own brand of freedom alongside his lover. Will they truly be free of arranged marriages and corrupt politics? Who trul pulls the strings in the shadows of Serevalen?

The will of our characters fight the currents of fate as they travel looking for answers to their futures and remedies to their pasts...Will we continue to see pain through The Eyes of Ellira, or will our adventures find solace in the deep?

5 🌟 Read; Amazing character development and story-telling; Sprinkles of spice and lots of F-bombs 😅🫡

✨ARC review ✨

Thank you to Asher D. Payne for allowing me to read this as an ARC.

This book was amazing. It had pirates, hidden lineages, corrupt leaders, SPICE and rivals that are bound together by fate... It had EVERYTHING!
As a debut dark fantasy novel, Asher has absolutely killed it. Her writing was fluent and so easy to follow, everything was seamlessly written, even with multiple POVs.

There was plenty to think about whilst reading, each character had their own in depth, complicated and incredibly intriguing backstory. I was so hooked on this book, I spent 5.5hrs reading this book and yet I felt like I'd read it in no time at all. There were so many twists, reveals and an insane cliffhanger.. I need more!

The world building was so beautifully done and I found it easy to imagine where the characters travelled to throughout the book. Rohen, the FMC, is a true force to be reckoned with, a real BADASS. Her backstory is extremely dark but her personality shines and makes the book so enjoyable.

Just be sure to read the trigger warnings before you read as it covers many triggers!

Thank you for this incredible book!

✨My favourite quotes✨

A female assassin who longs for a taste of freedom after being controlled by men most of her life and a broody but sexy pirate captain who was trained by the king and withholding information that he can not share: this one was addictive. Asher D Payne must seriously do some voodoo shit with her writing because everything she writes is magical and her latest book is no expectation!!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Cast from the Dark by Asher D. Payne was a dark fantasy romance filled with betrayal, pirates, gods, destiny, and power struggles layered into a world that felt dangerous and immersive from the very beginning.

Rohen Levitte was such an interesting FMC because beneath the identity others forced onto her was someone fighting desperately for freedom and survival. I liked watching her navigate a world where trust is fragile and danger constantly follows her.

Caspian Vayne was the type of MMC who carries the weight of his past everywhere he goes. His scars, loyalty issues, and anger added so much tension to the story, especially as secrets and betrayals continued unfolding around everyone.

The worldbuilding was one of my favorite parts of this book. Between the rival crews, the Damned gods, the political corruption, and the mythology surrounding the Eyes of Ellira, there was always something happening that kept the story moving.

I also enjoyed the darker atmosphere throughout the book. The constant feeling of danger, betrayal, and hidden motives made the story feel intense while still balancing fantasy, romance, and action well.

The dynamic between the characters was complicated in a way that kept me invested because nobody fully trusted each other, and every alliance felt fragile.

Overall, Cast from the Dark is a dark fantasy romance with pirates, gods, betrayal, fate, power struggles, and layered worldbuilding that makes you want to continue deeper into the series.

Cast From the Dark felt like being dragged beneath stormy waves and handed a dagger on the way down. 🌊⚔️

This book delivers dark fantasy with pirate grit, cursed gods, betrayal, and an atmosphere so heavy with saltwater and danger that every chapter feels drenched in midnight tides. Rohem is such a compelling FMC. She’s sharp, lethal, emotionally guarded, and carries the kind of rage that crackles across the page like lightning over open water. Caspian, meanwhile, is morally gray in the most infuriatingly addictive way. Scarred captain? Tragic past? Walking red flag wrapped in sea salt and vengeance? Unfortunately, yes. 🫠

The worldbuilding was one of my favorite parts. The lore surrounding the Damned, the Others, and the Eyes of Ellira added layers that made the story feel much bigger than just the romance. There’s political tension, betrayal, power struggles, and enough secrets to sink an entire fleet.

That said, the chemistry? Absolutely electric. The tension between Rohem and Caspian simmers like a storm waiting to break, and every interaction feels dangerous in the best way.

If you love:
🖤 dark fantasy romance
🌊 pirate captains & deadly assassins
⚔️ enemies tangled in fate
🩸 morally gray characters
🌙 cursed gods and sea lore

…then this book deserves a spot on your TBR immediately. The sea remembers everything, and honestly? So will I.

ARC Review
Release date: 19th May

Pirates, assassins, gods, blood, gore, spice and epic world building! What more do you need?

Asher D Payne, has a way with words and her newest book, Cast From the Dark, is no exception.

The story follows the journey of Rohen, a young woman who is running from her horrific past. Forced to live a life no-one should have to and desperately seeking her freedom from a life of servitude.

Rohen meets pirates, gods and a bunch of ruffians along the way. Some of whom she likes, others, not so much!

If you like dark (and I mean pitch black), have no triggers and want a tale of loss, murder, intrigue and some pretty loose morals, then this is the book for you.

There is a saying when you work on boats, 'don't screw the crew', these pirates didn't get that memo...

I rarely give 5* reviews but this is definitely deserving of it. Hopefully the wait for book 2 isn't long!

- Fierce FMC with a dark and troubled past
- An MMC with minimal morals
- Glorious villains who you will truly hate
- Real enemies, none of the 'we hate each other for 5 chapters and then fall hopelessly in love'
- Nipple chains, rum and a swaggering good time

I’m wondering why I never picked up books about pirates before!!! I mean, I love the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, but this one was definitely more rated R, haha. It’s full of adventure, action, and so many shocking moments.

This book had me saying “OMG” multiple times and left my mouth hanging open. The twists kept surprising me, and the chemistry between the characters was intense. I also absolutely loved Rohen Levitte’s character! She is such a fierce woman, and I love that even though she has a dark past, she uses it to make herself stronger. I mean, from the very first chapter, I was like, “Okay, I see you!”

As someone in the LGBTQ+ community, it was also really nice to see queer representation, especially in the pirate world.

I loved the darker pirate vibe and how fast-paced the story felt. If you enjoy dark pirate romance with shocking moments and lots of tension, I’d definitely recommend this book. I already can’t wait to read book two.

Cast from the Dark was such a strong dark fantasy debut. The world building pulled me in right away and the characters felt so real and layered, even the side characters. I got attached FAST.

The twists and secrets kept me hooked the entire time and I was constantly trying to figure out what was coming next. Definitely one of those books that keeps you thinking even after you put it down.

Rohen and Caspian are the definition of enemies to something way more. The tension between them is intense. Full of mistrust, sharp banter, and chemistry that had me hooked from the start. Their relationship is messy, complicated, and so addictive to read. Can't wait to see how their complicated relationship goes for Book 2!

If you love dark fantasy with tension, mystery, and emotional characters, this is worth picking up. Just make sure to check trigger warnings first because this one does cover darker themes 😈

Thank you Asher for this ARC 🖤

This dark pirate fantasy really delivered. Rohen is a fierce FMC with serious built-up rage from everything that she has endured, and Caspian is the perfect tortured, scarred captain full of secrets. Their enemies-to-lovers tension with all the forced proximity is truly electric and set this read apart. It is also SUPER spicy! The steam level is high & fits the intensity. I loved the immersive world with false gods, rival pirate crews (The Scarlet Tempest was intense!), political schemes & the sea that actually felt alive. The relationship built between the main characters and the crew were also pretty solid. The middle slowed down a little with all the threads, but the action & that ending hooked me for book 2!

Overall this is a solid 4.5 for me and if you like gritty nautical reads with teeth then I highly recommend you add this to your TBR right away!!

A big thank you to Asher Payne and Crowns & Chaos PR for the eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

The way this book ended is absolute TORTURE!!! I absolutely adored the book and all the characters. Each and every one of the characters was so complex, and the worldbuilding was so nuanced and well crafted which made the book so much fun to read. I will say, I do despise Caspian just a little and am finding it very hard to like him BUT that's just my personal opinion of him. Rohen's entire arc was so difficult to read about and it made me so happy when she finally got what she desired. Same goes for Caspian, although I do hope he finds his happy ending. Another thing I adored was the depiction of pirates in a more ruthless form, like how pirates are meant to be.
I cannot wait for the next book, and absolutely recommend Cast From the Dark to everyone (although slight warning, be ready for some dark stuff)

Thank you to the Asher D. Payne and the publisher for my advanced copy. All opinions in this review are my own.

What a first dive into dark fantasy for Payne! It was also my first pirate novel, and I really enjoyed it.

I wasn't sure what to expect at first, but the badass, fiery FMC pulled me in with her darkness and sass. I love the world, and I love that it happens at sea and that they're all outlaws. The twists and turns kept me hooked and eager for more.

The multiple POVs help elaborate on the story and drive the plot forward. I especially liked how it wove the characters together and explained past events while also directing us toward new...opportunities.

I always love a well-written FMC who seeks vengeance against all the ones who screwed her over. I can't wait to see where book 2 brings us!

📚 Cast From the Dark by Asher D Payne

At this point I'm pretty sure Asher can turn her hand to anything!

Cast From the Dark is a pirate dark fantasy, the first one of a new series. Swashbuckling sword fighting pirates twisted with gods, prophecies & complicated relationships.

As always Asher has a great cast of characters who are full of sass & rage. I love Rohen she's such a badass & I can't wait to learn more about her throughout the series!

The sword fighting scenes are just amazing & so vivid, I'm a sucker a good sword fight 😊

I love the prologue so much, it's so beautifully written & is just epic fantasy world building vibes!

That cliffhanger has got me screaming for the next book!

I had the honor of beta reading this and lemme tell you…I was HOOKED! The characters are so complex and real and the world building made me feel like I was right along side the characters. Rohen and Caspian are insanely well written and their stories made me gasp, cry, scream and everything else in between. And it’s not even finished. I don’t want to give away too much but if you like pirates, enemies-to-lovers that try to kill each other for the entire book and don’t immediately fall head over heels, found families and strong female rage mixed in with a bit of prophecies that force some characters together no matter how hard they try to get away…oh! And fallen gods…mmm did I mention a man with nipple chains…? Ah, well…you’ll wanna read this ;)

There is so much to love about Payne's work and Cast from the Dark is some of her best. It's full of well-written action and spice, vivid scenery in a beautifully crafted world, and fully-developed characters that you'll love to hate and hate to love.
When Rohen and Caspian cross paths, it changes the whole course of this world, from the interplay between the Damned Gods and the Others, to the lives of all the other characters (friend and foe alike).
You 100% will be screaming by the end of this book (in the best of ways). I'm absolutely desperate for book 2!!

I was lucky to receive a copy of this book from Iris Influencer Society and Author Asher D. Payne. I am leaving this review on my own free will and 100% honestly!

HOLY SH*T!!!! I have no words for all of this. First off the world, the story, the characters all freaking amazing. Now those spicy scenes oh my word, so much hotness. I can't pick a favourite character as they are all amazing in own ways. SO much happened in this book and yet I am still left craving more. More of all of it, more answer, what's next! I am so freaking hyped.

Wow. What a ride! This story is so layered. The lore is so nuanced. The plot is unpredictable and keeps you turning the page for more. The story is told in multiple POVs and the characterization is so complex. They are all tough and morally grey, but their motivations are all so distinct and influenced by their individual traumas. That said, check the trigger warnings--this is a dark fantasy. The FMC may be one of my new favorites. She is THE definition of Bada$$!

Thank you to Asher D. Payne and The Iris Influencer Society for this ARC!
