Would you sacrifice a part of yourself in order to survive?
For Des, a barista in Portland, Maine in the 90s, survival means enduring a supernatural earthquake that traps her and her friends in an underground punk bar. It means confronting the systems that don’t want them to exist; including the things that seem to be trapped in there with them.
E. M. Roy (she/they) is a writer and lover of all things weird, horrific, and dark, especially when those things have a social justice bend and are rooted in a queer perspective. After obtaining a B.A. in English from Boston University, their work has appeared in a handful of small publications. She currently resides near Portland, Maine with her parents, sibling, and dog, Boo. Let the Woods Keep Our Bodies is their debut novel.
A supernatural earthquake traps a group of punks at their local club. They're not alone in the dark, and they're not all on friendly terms.
No spoilers, but this book was quick, and I learned a lot about 1990's punk/lgbtq+ culture. E.M. Roy does a wonderful job with exposition. I found the characters fascinating, and they made me feel so tense!
Loved the 90s punk bar setting and the friendship between December and Joel. An original concept that was brilliantly executed. Go into this one blindly for the ride. I look forward to reading more from this author!
I'm a fan of E.M. Roy's depths into darkness. Confronting exactly how far a character will go and how much of themselves they will discover along the journey. Bloodletting Go is surreal and twisted and readers have no idea what's in store for them. Take the plunge.
