Boudica: A Life from Beginning to End

Rate this book
Discover the remarkable life of Boudica...

Boudica was the queen of her people, a proud Celtic tribe in the east of England, and she took that responsibility seriously. In a time when the Romans sought to add the British Isles to their ever-growing empire, she stood as the last line of defense between her tribe and total subjugation. And so, with nothing left to lose, she did what few had ever she led her people in open revolt against the mightiest empire on earth.

Rome had turned the Mediterranean into its own private lake and southern England into a conquered province. But power had made them careless. Drunk on past victories, the Romans had grown overconfident, corrupt, and complacent—so complacent, in fact, that they were caught off guard when an enraged army of Celtic warriors, united under the fiery banner of their queen, came steamrolling across the land, reducing Roman settlement after Roman settlement to rubble. This audiobook chronicles the life and legend of Boudica, the warrior queen.

This is an interesting history of the Celtic Queen circa 45-61 AD (CE). Her exploits would border on legend if she hadn't had at least 3 different Roman historians write about her attempt to chase the Romans from Britain in a time when there was no central government but only a series of tribes in the area. She led a huge but ragged group of Celts that destroyed Roman cities at Colchester, London, and St. Albans.
Although not much else is known of her life, for a brief period she was a tremendous leader at a time when queens having that sort of power were virtually nonexistent. This book does a good job of giving the information while trying to separate the facts from the legends.

It was a good read from the little information that remains of Roman Britain. Sadly, it’s the same story of tribes organized that a chieftain level verses a military machine.

A good overview of a Legend

A good overview of the legendary Warrior Queen of the Iceni, Boudicca. A decent enough read. As usual, well written.

Greetings Queen Boudica

I knew little about Queen Boudica. Hers is a fascinating story about a key historical figure whose life was way too short.
