Chilling stories, mind boggling events, and paranormal activities. We often hear them from the television, and often get scared of them. Although they do not happen to us, it is frightening to know how people become constantly plagued by them.

Maybe your house is an old building, or your school is a former cemetery. Perhaps someone you know can feel and see other worldly entities? Look around you... do you remember a moment when you heard a screeching sound from the attic? Or maybe your chairs move without your assistance. When the lights flicker and the wind is chilling, you may consider the possibility that you aren’t alone?

The cases included in this book from a whole family being haunted, haunted houses, scary roads, and haunted asylums. It is proof enough that paranormal events can take place anywhere, and an ordinary person can be a victim of ghostly encounters. You may not be a believer now, but after reading this book, you might change your mind.

Good scary read

Don't read this when you're alone, its dark, or there's a storm outside. Not for children. Very good book. Truly.

Truly a good book

I think the writer did a great job on the stories in this book. Great history and very entertaining. I enjoyed it.

I enjoyed this book, it's exactly what I like to read, true ghost stories, and the paranormal. I like the fact that they are short stories and I can read in one short session, before going to sleep at night. The content was presented well, and believable. Of course you have to keep an open mind on such subjects. I have had experience in such matters, and can do so. If you are a sceptic, then, there wouldn't be much point in reading it anyway.

If you enjoy reading true paranormal accounts, then this book is probably right up your dark, spooky and mystery enshrouded alley. If, on the other hand, you're used to reading highly polished eBooks with relatively few grammar and syntactical errors, then Emily Clark's True Ghost Stories might just be a bit of a bummer. In fact, despite overall good content, her writing is often more than a bit awkward in many instances.

In fact, odd or simply incorrect words are substituted in commonly used phrases throughout the text. There are far too many examples of poorly worded sentences in the book to list in one short review, but here are a few real zingers, just to give you an idea of what I'm referring to. "There are many versions to this story, and many will tell you that they are completely untrue, but if you come to think of it-- where would those stories come from if there were no bases in the first place?"

Bases? Baseball bases? Military bases? Oh! Perhaps it should read, "There are many versions of (not 'to') this story, and many skeptics will doubtless tell you that they're all completely untrue, but if you really think about it -- where would such stories come from, if no part of any of them had any basis in fact?" Okay, okay, let's blame it all on that darned old spell checker again, right? So "bases" should have been "basis." So what! Big freakin' whoop, right?

Yeah... but since Chapter 9 is entitled, "The Hauting In San Pedro, California," we might be safe to assume that good old spell checker wasn't exactly fully utilized before this book hit the electronic presses. Okay, okay, so they left out one lousy little letter n, right? No big deal, right? After all, these things do tend to happen in the eBook self publishing realm these days, do they not?

Sure. But then there are passages like, "Their marriage was celebrated in the Old New Orleans not just because of their wealth but also because they had good hearts." Hmm. Commas, please! Give me a mental pause in the sentence, for crying out loud! And since when did old New Orleans get to be "the" old New Orleans (which is how the city is referred to, not once, but several times throughout the chapter)? Or, should that have been, "the old New Orleans style?" And what, pray tell, does the fact that "they" had good hearts (an unfinished sentence particle) have to do with celebrating their marriage (wedding, perhaps?) in old New Orleans? And just who the heck are "they" anyway? Oh well, I guess you just have to read the whole book. Wait! I did!

Hmm.

But let's not be too hard on the book or the author, just for the lack of what a good old fashioned, thorough editing could have done to polish the final manuscript. These things happen, of course -- pesky typos and poorly worded sentences, and all that. And not just everyone is an English teacher, mind you, and would even notice all those unfortunate little grammatical errors, you know!

Yeah! So there!

So, not just judging the book by its cover (which is actually a pretty stylish cover, all things considered), when it comes to the actual content of this particular spooky collection of ghost stories, it's really not that bad at all. In fact, it's actually a pretty enjoyable read -- if you can overlook the somewhat numerous oddly worded sentences. The book is certainly suitably scary in all the right places, after all, and to be fair, it's really not that hard in most cases to understand what the author is presumably trying to convey.

One possible shortcoming, however, is that some of the stories in this book may be somewhat familiar to seasoned readers of ghost story books and/or watchers of paranormal themed TV shows. Of course, the Jackie Hernandez case highlighted in Chapter 6 (the one that happened in San Pedro, California) is still pretty darned creepy stuff, no matter how many times one may happen to see it recounted, so I guess it does make a more than acceptable chapter in the book.

Yet surely, the almost certainly concocted story of the painting of the "Crying Boy" can't really be considered to be a "true ghost story," can it? It might even arguably qualify as something more of a curse, rather than an actual ghost story. At the very least, it's more of a modern mass media fueled urban legend -- but then I suppose it's not exactly out of place in this type of book either.

However, "The Curse of James Dean’ Little Bastard," might be just ever so slightly off base, and the "Black Stick Men Phenomenon" seems to be a bit of an odd choice for inclusion in the book, too. There were a couple of chapters that were more or less new to a seasoned veteran ghost story enthusiast like me though, so I really must concede that Emily Clark's True Ghost Stories is still a mostly fun, spooky little collection of scary tales.

So by all means, just try to read this one with an open mind and a willing heart. Or... a willing mind and an open heart! Or something like that. Just be prepared to maybe have to reread some passages over again a time or two, just to get the genuine gist - which probably won't take that much effort anyway. Most importantly perhaps, is the fact that the edition of the book that I read was FREE, so I certainly can't complain. Well, not all that much anyway.

Interesting tales

This is a fairly decent book of ghost stories. There are quite a few that I had never reads before. The writer does a great job of telling the stories as well.

Because I have so many books, paperback and hardback, (they're the best, IMO), I am not sure how long I have had this book. If I had to guess, I would say several months or longer. I chose this book because of its interesting title and synopsis. Stories of ghosts, haunts, urban legends, etc., interest me. However, do not be mislead, where ghosts and haunted places and spaces are concerned, I am quite a skeptic. I am not saying these things do not exist - I am saying I have never had that type of experience. I very much believe in God and Heaven and Hell, so I DO believe there IS an afterlife.

As far as pleasing to read, this book served its purpose. If you have a fascination with the paranormal, this is the book for you. It is a brief and well written. Some stories did leave me kind of wondering, even though I have heard almost everything throughout my life. As for the contents being true and accurate, I cannot say - why don't YOU read and decide for yourself? What are you waiting on??? Scared? #goidreads

Truth is stranger than fiction!

I thoroughly enjoyed this fact based account of hauntings and weird paranormal occurrences. Easy to read and well written, I was only familiar with one of the stories. As a believer of "strange occurrences", I was able to put myself into the stories as an observer, and feel the hauntings and activities first hand. I recommend this for all. If you don't believe before you read, you will afterward!

Great Hauntings

This is a good book. Another book that I can share with my children for Halloween. These stories in this book are based on true events. I'm excited to share these stories because they happened all over the world. I love that each story of totally different from the next. I was offered this book for an unbiased and honest opinion.

Ok, several grammatical errors.

I usually love historically connected ghost stories. I just have a hard time after finding so many issues. Can't complain too much as it was a free download.
