The vampires of New York City are breathing easier after the demise of the tyrannical former head of the Vampire Council, Goran. Under Rohnert, the revered and newly ascended leader, their future looks promising. However, an unknown enemy is manipulating events, killing humans and vampires alike, and exposing their secrets to the human world.
This is bad news for new vampire Cyrus and his band of fighters at Tack Enterprises. Events derail his plans to find Zane, the sadistic vampire who tortured Cyrus and forced immortality on him. Armed with hatred deep in his bones, all Cyrus cares about is getting even, and Zane has it coming. Cyrus soon finds himself torn between the crippling desire for revenge and his responsibility to his friends. When he begins to spend time in the company of the beautiful and pureblooded vampire, Isidora, her presence in his life makes him rethink his priorities.
Isidora is able to read minds. The thoughts she hears from the respected and irresistible vampire, Cyrus, are filled with both anger towards Zane and a deep admiration for her. Being closeted all her life, Issy has no idea what to do in the face of the outside world’s war, death, and challenges. One thing is clear. She craves Cyrus, but his need for vengeance is clouding his mind. After discovering a previously hidden family member and being called to serve the Council, Issy is at a crossroads in her life and struggles to find the right path.
Both vampires face tough choices. Should Issy pursue her feelings for Cyrus or wait until he can return her affection? Will Cyrus deny his attraction to Isidora so he can kill the man who made his life a living hell on earth? Every decision leads to a reckoning.
A professional daydreamer, Lorenz Font discovered her love of writing after reading a celebrated novel that inspired one idea after another. Since being published in 2013, she has been conspiring, butting heads, and enjoying her spare time with vampires, angels, samurais, and other creatures she has created in her head.
Her perfect day consists of writing and lounging on her garage couch (a.k.a. the office) with a glass of her favorite cabernet while listening to her ever-growing music collection. She finds writing urban fantasy exhilarating and places an intense focus on angst and the redemption of flawed characters. Her fascination with romantic twists is a mainstay in all her stories.
Lorenz lives in Southern California with her supportive family and three demanding dogs.
I would like to thank Netgalley and The Writer's Coffee Shop Publishing House for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
I started this particular book with number four in the series. Therefore, it was a little confusing at first getting to know what was going on and piecing together things that had happened in previous books. There are a huge amount of people in this book. I could only keep a few in my head that were the front runners.
I liked what I read in this book. The characters all well played out with a great mix of bad and good guys and girls. I want to go back and read the first three books and I would love to continue the series.
There are several front runners in the book. There is Tack Enterprises which are the good guys. They fight for the good of all mankind in a sense. There are vampires and humans a like in the company. The two main characters are Cyrus and Isidora. They work for Tack and are slowly falling in love with each other. They both have painful pasts and try to work through it. They have some good times getting there I must say. Isidora (Issy) is also brought in as a new council member when a few were killed.
Rohnert is the new leader after the evil leader of the vamps dies in one of the previous books. He is the leader of the council as well. He is a good guy and wants to make things good, but he has his own demons from missing his wife Shelly who was killed as well.
You have Harrow who is the leader of Tack and a good guy. There are several other people, but I'm not going to bog the review down talking about each person.
The evil ones in the book are Bretania, who was Goran's wife. She wants to spread a disease and take over with Goran's children.
Drago wants to take over the council and everything else out there. He is the worst one and I hope to read his demise in a future book!
They have this new breed of vampires called the Neroc. They are a rare breed of vampire that are taller and stronger than the normal vampire. They are fast and lethal without the usual bloodlust taking over their senses. They are supposedly ugly as sin. The council members shunned them because of they could not be trusted. And of course, Drago, hires them.
They get a good ally in the form of a Shaman named Aemerria who takes over after Lukan, the old shaman, goes over to the dark side. There is also a secret surrounding her.
I'm not sure who developed it, but there is a lethal compound made into bullets that will kill or deform a vampire. It's called Dangeran. I never found it's origin mentioned in this book. I could have missed it but I think it was probably introduced in the previous books and the story about it.
I enjoyed this book and it was nice to read yet another take on different vampires and vampire politics. A great read from start to finish.
This is the fourth book in The Gates Legacy series and it's a vampire series that just keeps pouring on action , danger and even romance. Not what I would describe as strictly paranormal romance but certainly a series with bite! Vampire politics are taken up a notch with this instalment and it's a juggernaut of a book that just keeps powering through a plot that pulls no punches. The two main characters in this book are vampires Cyrus and Isidora. They met when the evil Goran finally met his end and poor Cyrus having faced so much does not view himself as worthy of the pure blood Issy. Yet as this story rolls along their mutual attraction is something they will both have to face. Those who work for Tack Enterprises had hoped with the end of the brutal reign of Goran that a safer and more fairer way could be found for the vampire nation to survive. Well let me disabuse any reader of that thought because trust me this book showcases the most dysfunctional family you could ever imagine! Relatives are simply crawling out of the primordial woodwork and these vampires seem to be prolific when it comes to breeding! A crazy assortment of so many generations it makes the readers head spin and yet Ms Font has it all under control as her story flows easily from one revelation to the next . Ive come to realise that this author goes where few others dare and happily allows her characters to suffer which sounds mighty twisted and yet just works so well. I am loathe to give too much away but will say if you thought vampires were scary then in this book you will be hiding behind your couch as there's a new ( or is that ancient?) breed in town and boy are they unpleasent. New characters are introduced and I wonder if one in particular will heal Rohnert who has always been my personal favourite but as happiness seems in short supply I hardly dare hope! Yes ths author has done it again with a story that had twists and turns aplenty. Vampire fiction that constantly surprises with it's mixture of greed, action and even a little hope. I have no idea what's about to happen and this book ends with so much left unsaid. I'm sure the next instalment will be a doozy and for this reader unmissable . I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review
I received ARC version of Reckoning by Lorenz Font, which is the fourth book of the Gates Legacy series.
The main focus in this book is on Isidora who is pureblood vampire and Cyrus who was turned against his will while he was kidnapped by Zane, Goran's grandson.
Cyrus is fighting against his nightmares and memories after he had been brutally tortuted by Zane and only light in his world seems to be Isidora who has made her mission to make Cyrus as her lover and make him acknowledge his growing feelings to her.
Same time as two of them are facing their emotional dilemmas new enemies start to appear against the Vampire Counsil and the Tack Enterprices.
Though the main romantic focus is on Isidora and Cyrus, we get to see how everything is after end of Goran's rule. We are introdused even more new characters and we get absorbed to other characters from earlier books; like Rohnert who was the main character in book three (Ascension), who faced maybe the biggest loss in the Gates Legacy books, but he had to take reins of the Vampire Counsil to show new way to help the vampire race to grow better after the destruction of Goran's rule.
Reckoning is full of suprises you couldn't even think of which makes it maybe the most interesting book of the Gates Legacy SO FAR and I absolutely LOVED every second of it while reading it and I probably start reading it again soon.
Oh my gosh! The Gates Legacy is back with an almighty bang, and boy was it good to catch up with the gang! Picking straight back up where we left off, Rohnert is nursing some severe issues regarding his mate's passing, Cyrus is intent on revenge for his torture, Issy just wants to be loved and the rest of the gang are trying to hold it all together like some magical glue. Throw some ancient, and very freaky, enemies into the mix for power and you have your full set to play with, and play is what Lorenz Font does so well.
The pace in this book is much more reminiscent of the earlier parts of the series. It's got a pull that as soon as it's got you hooked, you can't put it down. I've spent many nights reading way past my bedtime because I just needed to know what the characters were going to do next. As I've already mentioned, this book picks back up where we left off and it was like slipping back into your favourite pair of jeans. It' was familiar, yet there was another threat to follow - how Font finds so many enemies for the little rag tag band of heroes is beyond me, but it makes for very compelling reading!
Told mainly from the perspective of Cyrus and Issy, it was, as always with Font's writing, a delight to see so many POV's being used in the writing. It's like a lesson for aspiring writers on how to change POV's in a way that gives the reader so much information yet doesn't confuse them in the process. I adore her writing style, and this latest offering is no different in that. In fact, I probably like this one best of all, if only because, despite there being some hairy moments, Font managed to keep all of my favourites alive for a whole book!
The character development over the course of this story was also superb. Every character feels like they continue to grow, but none more so that Isidora. She is really coming into her own and holds the role of the lead heroine with the poise you'd expect of such a bloodline. She was an absolute joy to read and has secured her place within my favourite characters. Her relationship with Cyrus is probably one of the best developed and well told romances I've read in a while. It's believable, understandable thanks to their own troubled pasts and a fabulous pairing to read. I just hope Font leaves these two to enjoy a little happily ever after time, but I won't hold my breath knowing her penchant for throwing things in the air when they get settled!
The many twists and turns of the story also need a mention. When writing a series of this length and complexity it is very hard to keep it fresh, but Font never fails to deliver another twist or turn that leaves the reader reeling and wondering when that 18 wheeler truck or 2 ton bus hit them. It really is edge of the seat reading that leaves you needing more from the gang of vampires. I'm already on tenterhooks wondering how some of the loose ends will be tied up in the next book and I love that Font has left me thinking of her characters, even hours after finishing the book, because, let's face it, who doesn't like it when a book gets under your skin like that?
And so, I suppose I should wrap up and end my waffle. If you are new to the series, go back and read the others first. If you're an old hand returning for your next fix, you're going to love it. It's awesome, amazing, phenomenal and Font is right back on form with another 5 star thriller from the Gates crew. Buy it, I can promise you that you will not be disappointed.
*This book was first reviewed on Lily Loves Indie as part of a blog tour, for which an ARC was received in return for an honest review*
Reckoning, The Gates Legacy: Book 4, Lorenz Font Genre: Romance, Fantasy/Paranormal Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews Well, we’re on to book four now, and each time I think the story looks closer to closing even more happens to open it up. Having finally beaten and rid the world of Goran you’d think Harrow and the team could relax but...not so. Humans and vampires are coming at them from all directions. I’ve lost count of how many attacks on HQ and how many times they’ve had to move. Now it looks like maybe they’ll be changing plans once again, as they are under threat from a former Council member who’s teamed up with Dragos, another power hungry vampire. Ss ever though the mix isn’t that simple. Dragos also has allies in another dangerous vampire group – each of them think they’ve got one over on the other, the former Council member has her own agenda, and there’s Lukan – Shaman....what a shock that was!!! Rohnert's taken his place heading the Council and is busy bringing it into modern day, trying to protect those who are left, but wondering if Bretania’s betrayal is the only one? He’s busy helping Harrow and the team too, and mourning Shelley – her body still hasn’t been found, not that there’s been time to look for it! I’m still hoping for some kind of miracle bringing her back, I just hate losing the good people. It was sad when Tack died but Shelley, she deserves to be with Rohnert and their baby. I can’t believe she’s just dead and gone, and until her body is found I’ll still have a wishful hope for her. Throw into the mix of attacks, betrayals, double dealings a couple of new child vampires left with Harrow’s team for protection, who of course need to learn about respecting humans. Harrow doesn’t want any humans on his team to become a child fast food snack....McBlood’s for supper??? Cyrus and Isadora are still feeling their way around the attraction they have, Cyrus’ obsession is still set on vengeance against Zane, something sets good friends Cyrus and Rohnert at loggerheads, and once again its an all action read. I don’t know how many more episodes before this wraps up but it’s come a long way from the reasonably simple start, and the characters have grown so much. Harrows team still stay very true to Tack’s ideals though, both from wanting to respect his memory and knowing that his way is the only moral way. All these battles though have taken a huge toll on all of them, and I think its reaching a point where their human friends in high places can no longer hide Supernatural action, and its going to break out and cause nightmares and terrors for the human population. Stars: Five, another rollercoaster read. ARC provided by Netgalley and publishers
If you haven't read this series, you need to. It's one of the best vampire series I've read in a long time and this one definitely wins.
This book focuses heavily on Cyrus and Isidora and the challenges each faces. By the end of this one, I just felt so bad for Cyrus. He is one unlucky vampire. And Issy? Yeesh.
This book is definitely a prep book for an epic book 5. Zane shows up and is full of remorse. Cyrus' inability to control himself led to the death of one of their own. Rohnert is punishing himself for what happened to his mate. Bretannia creates mischief and we see meet someone we weren't entirely sure existed.
This book is full of mischief and greed, love and friendship, pain and despair. Everything that I want in a vampire novel! Lorenz Font does a fantastic job with her vampires and I love the world she's created. No one is safe and it's absolutely perfect. Too many vampire novels focus on the happily ever after that the Twilight series made popular. The Gates Legacy and Reckoning are true vampire novels, in the same vein of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. If you want a vampire novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat, one that reassures with every new chapter that no one is safe, Reckoning and The Gates Legacy is the vampire series for you.
Well my...my.. Just as good as the first one. When there is evil about there is usually good about as well, ya know the old good vs evil. Tack Enterprise vs Goran and the evil bad. As one problem is dealt with, the hero’s of Tack Enterprises will find their work not done.
We met Cyrus a little bit in Tormented, now this is his and Isidora’s story where they are the main characters. (Loves her name ) No relationship is easy and for the most part everyone has a past. Cyrus and Isidora is no different, working closely together for Tack Enterprises the start feeling more for each other than just being co-workers. As they learn about what it means to fall for each other, they will need to work through there past issues... What a ride it will be.
Book 4... As the others before will keep you just on the edge and keep your finger turning the pages. The constant on your toes, the smoking passion. Following each fight, each growth within the couples. A roller coaster of emotional up and downs and so very worth it. Enjoy.
Every time I get the next book in this series I'm blown away. I keep thinking that they can't all be good each and every time, and I am always wrong. Lorenz Font has built a world in New York City that's teeming with vampires. Most of them only want to preserve their race and live in harmony with the humans. Unfortunately, there are a few who want to rule the entire world and will stop at nothing to get what they desire. The group of vamps who are determined to keep things good is comprised of many different characters, all living and working together in a compound. Font takes us on a journey with each of them, and we believe we are there with them, fighting, healing, and caring for them.
When I pick up one of these books I know I'm not going to be able to put it down until I'm finished. It's been true for all of them. Thankfully there seems to be more to come because I'm certainly not finished with this world. 5 out of 5!
Ms. Font takes us on another rollercoaster ride and keeps us on our toes.
This book picks right up where Ascension, Book 3, left off and continues with the story of our beloved Tack Enterprise gang. Who knew that you could not only give us a new take on vampires, but keep the twists and turns coming!
I highly recommend this series if you love action, romance, paranormal and a completely new take on a vampire series. You will cry...you will want to kill Ms. Font, but you will keep coming back for more torture with the complex relationships and humorous banter.
I can't wait for book 5! Redemption can't get here soon enough!
If you haven't read book 1, Hunted, I suggest you get to it!
I say this more out of pride than for full disclosure and honesty reasons, but I was Lorenz beta reader for this series and the person who has spent the last two years regularly begging for Cyrus to have his own book. I fell for that man in Hunted and begged, pleaded and yes even demanded that he get a book of his own. I am so thankful Lorenz saw the brilliance in my suggestion, or demand, and gave him the fourth installment to The Gates Legacy. Actually it had nothing to do with me begging, as the Gates Legacy unfolds, it was just common sense that this new chapter in the plot would evolve from Cyrus.
I could tell you what happens in this book, well no I really can’t because so much happens in every one of her books, it would be a novel just describing it, but I do feel I can give you some insights as to what you are going to discover while you read her series. It is strongly suggested you read these books in order, if you don’t you will risk getting lost in the plot but more than that you will never capture the true poetry in her writing. Lorenz is one of the only authors I have come across that can write a book in such a way, you actually forget you are reading and feel more like you are living the story in a big screen production. Her talent and way with words brings the story to life, you can smell the air in the scene, picture the little items that were not even mentioned because the book becomes a magical land you have just entered.
The theme, as always if good versus evil and how far are you willing to go to achieve your goal. In this installment she also focuses on how far you will go to make your life better. There are some characters that we have grown to love over the past three books that are stuck in a darkness that will consume them if they don’t reach out for the light. Cyrus was dealt a terrible deal when he was transformed from human to vampire. Now he has to decide if adjusting to his new life and making the best of it is worth the risk, especially when he is going to have to partner up with the demon himself who put him in this position. Anger, disappointment and revenge will threaten to derail the plans and the overwhelming sense of loss could cripple some of our beloved characters. Is this family strong enough to bring the ones on the brink back to life while carrying on the mission at hand?
I have the blessing in life to call Lorenz my dear friend and with this relationship I see so much of her own personality in her books. With Reckoning her trait to put herself aside for the greater good is the common theme that plays out across the pages. Each member at Tack Industries will be faced with the challenge of protecting themselves and those they love or risking it all for the greater good in the vampire community. The bond that this created family has, is fused with a moral need to do well, even in the face of the most demonic evil forces ever to be created. Wars and battles will be fought and some are won, some are lost, but what stands firm is their resolve to do what their fallen leader had set out to do in the beginning of the series.
There are not enough words that could convey my feelings about how everyone must read this series. I was not even a vampire fan when I started working with her on Hunted. Lorenz writes for all readers. She doesn’t direct this series to vampire genre lovers, she writes for readers who love fantastic stories. I found as a “vampire virgin” that I was easily enamored by these characters and plot, finding my own place among the Gates Legacy lovers, yet another one of Lorenz’s personality traits, inclusion for all people, acceptance and the ability to leave no one behind when she it typing out her magic on the computer. Get your copies today people, you won’t be sorry.
This series must be read in order. The first book is Hunted. The second book is Tormented. The third book is Ascension. This is the fourth book.
Cyrus has never really let himself get attached since he was a foster kid. He has not felt worthy of love since he lost his foster sister after their foster mother died. He feels even more worthless and dirty since being kidnapped, tortured, and turned by Zane. He keeps trying to scare off Isadora even though he is totally head over heels in love with her... Yet he is torn up with raging jealousy whenever she is around another male. The pureblood female would be better off without him wouldn't she? How will he convince her he is a bad idea?
Isadora has had enough of orders and expectations and loss. Her parents kept her isolated and ignorant of most everything until the day they died. She saw only them and her best friend ( body double ) and her donor/love interest Finn. Sheltered does not even describe her life before that horrendous fateful day. Her whole world ended amd everyone she loved died. Now she i determined to live by her rules, her choices, and love who she decides. Will she ever be able to convince Cyrus that not only is he worthy of love but that she has loved him since she met him? Or will she be forced to live loveless shadow existence forever mourning?
This book answers alot of questions while deepening other mysteries as well as uncovering new enigmas. Intrigue and mayhem coupled with disaster and betrayal create a suspenseful thrill ride full of action and adventure. Font gets better and better with each convoluted plot twist and every book :) I can't wait to read the next one!
***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy some horror and scifi in their urban paranormal fantasy romances :)
As usual I hit the last page of Lorenz’s Reckoning the 4th in The Gates series wishing I could pick up #5 and continue the journey and battle the fighters at Tack Enterprises are on. The fighters must regroup after each battle, finding new allies, losing friends in the fight yet with time to find new love matches. Just as The Tack group defeats an enemy new threats emerge as old enemies hide and rebuild. Zane the grandson of the defeated Goran was tracking Tack and reporting his findings to his grandfather. He captured and tortured Cyrus making a fierce enemy. Now that his family is gone he realizes he was just a pawn and he begins to find ways to alert the Tack group of attacks. Not knowing if he will be accepted as an ally or be captured and killed in revenge Zane feels he must try to make amends. Font’s stories show that from weaknesses come strength.
The world building of The Gates Legacy series is off the charts stunning. With each novel this world just grows in volume, depth and characters.
In Reckoning we have the story of Cyrus and Isidora (aka Issy), both vampires. Cyrus’ life as a vampire was forced upon him, and his need for revenge is deep and consuming. Issy has the ability to read minds… which can be beneficial and annoying. It’s not easy knowing everything someone thinks about you, the good and the bad, and not react to those thoughts. Issy is determined to become Cyrus’ mate – but his need for revenge consumes him. And eventually Issy must choose the direction her life will take, with or without the man she loves.
There are new challenges introduced in Reckoning. And we run into other familiar characters as well. There definitely appears to be some preparation work for the next novel in this series which just leads to the conclusion that this amazing series is not done yet, and thank the fates for that.
I loved this continuation of The Gates Legacy series. Reckoning hit all the right notes for me, the story was intense and endearing. The characters vivid, determined, and so realistic in their reactions to this world. The story pulls you along and never lets go of your emotions along the way. Think of a roller coaster with its ups and down and lightening fast speed – and then you’d have a slight idea of how your emotions will be engaged in this novel.
I believe you would enjoy any one of the stories in this series. Can you start with Reckoning? Yes, you could. There is enough mentioning of past events that you’d have enough to enjoy this most recent addition. But, ideally, I would suggest that you start at the beginning with Hunted. When you start with the first novel and continue from there with the series you experience this world in all of its nuances, details and emotions.
I loved Reckoning. I would highly recommend it and the entire series to anyone who loves paranormal, vampires and a uniquely created world with its own rules and people. If you haven’t started this series yet… why not? It’s simply stunning, entertaining, scary and has lots of love to share with us all. Go on and get started or continue… it’s a journey well worth taking.
*I received an e-ARC of Reckoning from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
Lorenz Font is a cunning, creative, captivating new voice in Paranormal Romance. She created enchanting situations and characters with enough heat to set fire to everything they touch. In her 4th Gates Legacy series, Reckoning, the characters are fantastic, smart and sexy with their own vulnerabilities. The damaged relationship between these powerful protagonists get a second chance. It make us believe that everyone is capable of redemption.
The novel expertly entertains the readers through the emotional, twisted, sensual turns; with her quick-paced writing. You actually have to put the book down every once in a while just to catch your breath. Lorenz Font created mythical world of lessons taught , you will never be sure what's going to happen next, I can hardly wait for the next one. It is a must read! It will be fun to see how the prophecy turns out for the rest of the characters.
Cyrus did not choose to become a vampire but was kidnapped by Zane and was turned . Cyrus loves Issy but tries to make her go away as he doesn’t feel worthy of her . But Issy has a mind of her own now and is determined to have Cyrus as her lover . Issy can read minds and is also a pureblood vampire . Cyrus feels a very deep need for revenge . A former council member has teamed up with a power hungry vampire named Dragos so once gain HQ has to worry . The Vampire Council has a new leader Rohnert that is trying to modernize things .
So much going on in this story but it all comes together a testimony to the writing of this story . I loved the characters especially Cyrus and Issy all the twists and turns they went through . So great story and plot I recommend . I received an ARC of this story for an honest review.
