Tyrus expected his world to change once the Geneshan War ended. He expected it to change more once he finally reunited with his family.
He did not foresee that the biggest upheaval to his world would be caused by Turine sorcerers tampering with an ancient Geneshan artifact in the capital city of Hol.
The land stands devastated and covered in a haze. Sorcerers are unable to use their power. The king and capital are likely destroyed. Raiders seek to profit in a world without law.
Tyrus decides that he must get his loved ones to the safety of the Southern Kingdoms if they are to have any chance of surviving. The quick flight he plans turns into a labored journey when local townsfolk join his party. Expecting only new dangers now before him, Tyrus fails to anticipate old ones haunting his steps.

Book Two in the Tyrus Chronicles. This is another re-read because I was in the mood.
This begins immediately following the ending of the first book. The magical artifact is wreaking havoc on the world willy nilly. Tyrus, his sister Ava, his kids, some soldiers from his unit and some friends begin to search for survivors amidst the carnage, while the artifact continues to dole out destruction in various ways. These unpredictable occurrences are very sporadic, and the characters never know in what manner the doom will next manifest. In record time he has accumulated a large following of survivors, and he tries to get them all to a place of safety.
There was some really decent character growth in this story. The cast was quite varied, and all of the characters have distinct personalities and foibles. I particularly enjoyed the different sibling relationships: the loyalty between Tyrus and his tough sister Ava, the overprotective and quiet Dekar with his boisterous younger brother Ira, Tyrus' mistrustful daughter Myra and his sweet natured son Zadok. These relationships really enhanced the story in a positive way.
It is a good story. But it really is lacking. It wouldn't hurt if u let a few cuss words out now an then. An move it a long a little faster. Too much going back over the years instead of pushing forward. It dose have some good hummer. But dude you really should think about giving your story's more life an adventure. So the ready feels like that right that with them. Give it a try on your next series.
I had great hope for this series but I felt disappointed. Nothing much happens in book 2 I felt it drag. I thought Tyrus would form an army and save his country and kill those who wronged his family but no.
A military post apocalypse story, but with swords and sorcery!
Well written, believable characters and interesting story. Most fantasy stories are about preventing the end of the world, this is the other side of the coin.
Found this author by accident, great story telling and wall to wall action. Had to purchase the next 2 books straight away as I have read the first 2 in only a few days.
Enjoyed book two. This book was focused on developing the story. Not as fasted paced as book one but good all the same. Read this series or listen to it you won’t be disappointed. My me look forward to my drives to work.
'Wayward' continues the exciting and intriguing saga that began with it's predecessor Forgotten Soldiers. The apocalypse taking place in Tyrus' world continues to worsen as he tries to lead his friends, family and neighbors to safety. Mr. Simon's strengths' which were so evident in the first volume are more polished and refined in 'Wayward'. He has a great knack for character development with Tyrus and company often offering up hard won wisdom amidst hilarious humor and snappy dialogue. This novel has a lot of heart and Mr. Simon clearly understands the plight facing those men and women who take it upon themselves to defend their country through service in the military. I highly recommend this novel to all fans of military fiction, military fantasy and apocalyptic stories. You won't be disappointed.
I was finally able to get through some of my backlog on my days off. Will def. pick up more in the series because it reminds me of Cook's Black Company.
