What superb poetry! To my surprise, I hadn’t even heard of Ruth Bidgood until a Quaker friend sent me her poem ‘November’ to help with the lockdown blues, which just goes to show that however many books you have read, there are always countless more out there you haven’t!

Ruth Bidgood is considered the pre-eminent Welsh poet writing in English, and her poems are wonderfully evocative of the Powys countryside, though I am going to ask my local library if they could re-classify this book as poetry rather than local history!

The last series of poems in the book are imagined voices from the time when the Romans withdrew from Wales, and Britain went slowly into a Dark Age. Sure feels like that now, with the appalling Tory government and Brexiteers plunging us into chaos with their British exceptionalism, and sadly outdated pathetic ideas of lost British empire glories... They do not speak for me!
