Welcome to Hemlock Cove, where the town is magically rebranded -- but real witches aren't necessarily welcome. That makes things hard for the Winchester witches -- including local newspaper reporter, Bay. She's got a persnickety family -- wait until you met Aunt Tillie -- and a penchant for stumbling across trouble. Thankfully for Bay, she's got loyal cousins, and the ability to talk to ghosts as she tries to solve mysteries and put souls to rest. Follow Bay as she meets a man who is more than he seems, and tries to hide a history that is centuries in the making. This is the first three books in the Wicked Witches of the Midwest cozy mystery series. It includes: Any Witch Way You Can, Every Witch Way But Wicked and Witching You Were Here.
Note: These characters are snarky. You've been warned. This is NOT a new standalone book. This is a compilation of previously published books.
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
First, I enjoyed these 3 books in the Wicked Witches of the Midwest bundle. It's more about the Winchester women, a family of earth witches, than it is about the mysteries in each book. There isn't much in the books about the other residents of Hemlock Grove, other than the police chief. There is quite a bit of humor in the books, and I laughed out loud a few times. However, all the women from 85 year old Aunt Tillie to the 3 cousins who are in their 20s and live together to their mothers who live with Aunt Tillie at the inn they run all act like high school girls. Maybe younger. I mean really, 20 somethings rolling in the snow beating on each other? And the constant snarky comments from all of them get tiring. If the characters acted their ages a little more, I would have given these books another star. Just a warning, even though the mysteries are solved in each book, there are plot lines that continue on to the next books. I haven't decided if I will read more of this series. These books are a fast, light read and if you don't mind the juvenile behavior of the Winchester women, they're worth a few hours of your time.
This is sort of a cozy mystery with romance and witchcraft. After establishing that a family of witch women live in a small town, it segues into a fairly recognizable cozy. There are several murders solved by the classic nosy woman who can’t stand not to know what’s going on. As expected, she along with her cousins, charges in all good intentions and little common sense. The underlying theme of whining about their family and constantly fighting and making up among the three cousins wore thin pretty quickly. In the end it was a good read that held my interest. In many ways it is like a soap opera with a small cast of characters regularly revealing unguessable at depths and relationships.
I enjoyed it for the most part, but found the crabby banter between family members was over done. I found myself skipping through a lot of their dialogue towards the end.
4.5 Stars Bay, Thistle, and Clove come from a long line of witches and they live in a town that recently rebranded itself as a magical town based on witches. It's an "open secret" around town about their family being weird, but they still deny it. They live in the guesthouse attached to the inn their mothers and great aunt run, Winnie, Marnie, Twila, and Aunt Tillie. No one messes with Aunt Tillie because it's just not worth it, she always gets even. When she does, you wish she hadn't. She's rude, she's evil, but she's loyal. The three mothers are kitchen witches and are the best cooks and bakers around, so the inn is becoming known for its wonderful food. It's also becoming known for its "dinner theater". The constant family wrangling that goes on in the kitchen among the seven women carries over to the table and into the evening and the guests think it's staged for them due to its quality of drama. And drama there is at the inn. Aunt Tillie is always trying to get away with something or cursing someone or ordering things like scorpions named Fred over the internet. The three mothers attempt to control her or have the three cousins "babysit". The hijinks are hilarious. The constant drama all underlined by a strong sense of love is amazing. Add to this two lawmen and three ex-husbands. The local sheriff is a favorite at the inn and the three moms vie for his attention. A newcomer to town is a hunky young undercover FBI agent who immediately falls for Bay while suspecting her of murder. While the three exes/estranged fathers open an inn in competition with the moms across town. Put all that into your cauldron along with several murders, old and new, some ghosts and such, drug runners, child traffickers, a poltergeist, and a high school bully and simmer on high until it boils over! This is the series that has you reading just one more book. It's nice they come in bundles so you have several at a time! Recommended.
This is a fun set of the first three books of the Wicked Witches of the Midwest series. If you are looking for serious mysteries, this isn’t your book. But if you are looking for lighthearted fun, this is the right place.
Bay Winchester lives with her cousins Thistle and Clove in a guesthouse on the property of The Overlook Inn, owned and operated by the girls’ mothers and their great aunt, Tillie. Bay is the editor of The Whistler, the weekly paper of the tiny town of Hemlock Cove. Thistle and Clove together run a store called Hypnotic which sells items like herbs and crystals. The town of Hemlock has rebranded itself as a “witch town” for the tourist market and is trying to cash in with shops selling spooky stuff and activities centered around spooky themes. Halloween is a big time for them, and the first two books take place during the autumn shortly before Halloween. I thought the third book would encompass the day itself, but instead, it takes place in mid-December.
The Winchester women are all bonafide witches. They specialize in herbal magic and potions and stuff, and the mothers are kitchen witches and excellent cooks, which is handy in running their inn. Bay can also see ghosts, and ghosts feature prominently in the first two stories. They all call Aunt Tillie evil, but she actually seems to be a combination of mischievous and super-protective of her family.
The real point of the stories though seems to be to feature the constant banter between Bay, Clove, and Thistle. They are supposed to be in their twenties but sometimes act more like middle schoolers.
I gave the three stories an overall rating of 4, mainly due to all three stories having very good plot lines. As to characters, perhaps some people enjoy reading about 3 twenty-something year old girls acting like they are about 6 to 8 years old (No, I don't - yes you do - no I don't, yes you do, ad nauseum; stuffing dirt down each others throats), with their mothers being little better with their childish bickering. Talk about immaturity. And then there's Aunt Tillie. Everyone seems to think she is a hoot - torturing the girls from childhood on up , but she purportedly loves them. With relatives/friends like that, you don't need any enemies. In my opinion, Aunt Tillie is a vile, evil, mean, vicious old woman and I find nothing amusing about her. The story that she told Bay when she was a little about the doll that was going to eat her soul while she slept was unconscionable. You don't do that to a child. And from the other reviews I have read, people love Aunt Tillie. I guess they are as sick as she is. Needless to say, I won't be reading any more of the Wicked Witches of the Midwest. And that is a shame, because Ms. Lee seems to be more than capable of writing a good mystery if she could just clean up her characters.
I really loved all three of these books. It's nice to read something that isn't to taxing. The stories seemed to flow nicely and it's nice to get to know the characters. Although Bay was the main character, the others within the stories where really included so, as a reader o felt like I was getting to know each other them. I kind of wish that Bay like her cousins would have had and used more powers, so we could see what she can do.
My only niggle I have was the third story, don't get me wrong, it was enjoyable and we got to see Bay falling in love, however, I just don't think it had as much conviction as 1 & 2. It just seemed to be more forsed and rushed towards the end. I know that books need to have an ending of some sort but it seemed a little flat. And I for the life of me, without having to go back and read can't remember if we found out what was in the coffin, if it was indeed a coffin and what that had to do with Thistles dad.
Yes it certainly left me wanting to read the next book, I mean new characters turning up right at the end.(won't spoil it for those who haven't read it yet). This book I really would recommend. It's nice and easy going and takes you away from your own thoughts for a while.
I like the concept, but the stereotypes and cliches are just awful. Tha girls and law enforcement hate on Landon, because he wears denim and leather and rides a motorcycle. The chief of police is so incredibly rude, not even looking him in the eye when speaking to him, then dropping a "people like you" comment. I'm friends with a lot of bikers, so this stereotype is just gross. Not only that, but the girl cousins (including our main character) are bitchy to each other and bitchy to their moms and aunts. I'm not a fan of the repeated question asking, repeating what someone just said as a question back at them. Then throwing each other under the bus in a 5 minute "but she smokes weed" confessional. At about 2.5 hours in, I just realized I don't care about any of these characters, except the murder victim Shane, and even he has a forced horny teenager characteristic that's just cringey. I can't continue on. I'll leave this sit and just enjoy thinking about Landon ripping someone a new one for looking down on him. Lol.
It took me awhile to get through these three books. I liked the mystery and the quirky small town and the hints of maybe romance in the future, but I'll be honest, the snarky, bitchy, sometimes petty, family dynamic almost drove me to distraction, especially in the first book. Oddly enough, the Winchester women, including Aunt Tillie, kind of grew on me as the books progressed until I could almost see a method to their madness. By the end of the third book it's apparent that no matter how much they snipe at each other, they all love each other very much and have each other's backs. The mysteries are entertaining enough that I might attempt another foray into Hemlock Cove, plus I'm sort of interested to see what will happen next.
Loved the characters. Some are down right crazy, some a persnickity and some are just bitchy. For a small town where nothing should happen its amazing what goes on. Three generations of witches were some towns folk disagree with them and others are scared. No one character stands out as the main one as all the women get enough written time. Granted Aunt Tillie is the glue who holds them together in her own way. Lighthearted reading that can help while away time in a nice way. Did not like in each book why does the author need to go over who the characters are? The books do sort of lead onto each other so space is being used up when it does not need to be.
This is a box set of the first three Witches of the Midwest books. Amanda M. Lee is fun to read and this collection is laugh out loud funny.
The characters include three cousins, their three mothers, who are sisters, and Aunt Tillie, who raised them all. Oh, and they're all witches. Their lives revolve around the bed and breakfast that the three sisters run, with the "help" of their Aunt Tillie. The three cousins live together on the property in the guesthouse.
The antics and misadventures they all get into will have you enthralled, entertained, and laughing as you turn each page.
Wicked Witches of the Midwest #1-3 I liked the stories/mysteries in the three books. I liked the world building, the characters and the humor. Not compelling, but good.
I did not like the narrator. She has almost no differentiation between the voices of the characters. She mispronounces quite a few words that seem to be used multiple times in the books. She also has odd pauses sometimes when switching characters. I do feel that this narrator detracts from the enjoyment of the books. Probably would have been better had I read them instead of listen to them.
I loved these books! The characters are really well developed and have interesting and humorous personalities. It’s a close knit family with a great Aunt Tillie, three moms and their three daughters. All seven women live on the same property, which is a large Victorian house that’s been renovated to have separate quarters in the back for the women. These ladies are witches, and they have numerous adventures which always turn out to be hilarious! Such great stories!
Bay and her cousins are part of a family of witches. They spend a lot of time getting themselves in trouble with their mothers or worse Great aunt Tillie. Because aunt Tillie loves to curse them (giving them mustaches, making them too big to fit in their pants, etc), they tend to throw each other under the bus. Still, they pull together when anyone else is involved. Good fun, they are involved with some murders, ghosts, an FYI agent, the local sheriff and local characters. Kept me reading, laughing and looking forward to the next books!
I absolutely enjoyed these three books. I am not usually fond of book sets , they can be monotonous, not so this set! I enjoyed the humor, I could not stop laughing at the conversations between the members of the Winchester clan. Aunt Twila is a riot! Each book even though a complete work was more like a chapter in a story rather than a book by itself, hence, the compulsion to goon to the next. Time spent with the Winchester ladies passes much too quickly, I enjoyed every page, Thistle's comments and statements along with everything else,
The little town of Hemlock Cove reminded me of my hometown in the midwest. The characters were very clearly defined, the three cousins a bit more than their mothers, but I liked them all. My favorite, of course, was Aunt Tilly! I could see her looking like Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies! I also loved the sarcastic humor among the three cousins. My family loved each other in a similar way. I look forward to more mysteries involving these characters.
I laughed out loud so many times, loved all the characters and the snarky bickering back and forth between the Winchesters! Really liked how the main character Bay would comment to the reader after saying something, like this.... What? Stranger things have happened. Heck, stranger things happened in my family on a daily basis. All of the characters were wonderful and you can't help but love Aunt Tillie! Love the writing style of Amanda Lee - thanks for entertaining me. Will be reading more of her works!
These three books cover a family of witches that don't get along terribly well with each other but would give their all for each other. Three generations of women living and working together, the stories are well written, filled with bickering and arguments just like families do, and each is a complete story. Fun to read. There is another set of three books that continue the story line.
I really like these three stories, especially the snarky bits and sarcasm. What family doesn't have moments like that?
I give the stories themselves five stars, but as a linguist and grammarian, I took away one star for the grammatical errors. And, though some of them made me cringe, most people probably wouldn't even notice most of them.
This series describes the adventures of a family of witches, great aunt , sisters and cousins. Successful inn keepers they are collectively less successful with male relationships. The plots are tight but the true highlight is the endless snark they exchange between each other, beaux, assorted townspeople and ghosts. The volumes flew by and I am looking forward to the next set.
I thought the storyline was interesting ;it wasn't convoluted or deep, but it held my interest. The snarky, sniping conversations were cute and sharp to start out with, but got tiresome after a while. Almost every character was sarcastic and made biting comments. That just isn't real life, so it seemed too contrived. I'm interested in seeing how the characters develop, if they ever do, but I don't think I can put up with so many having a smart mouth and acting like a 12 year old.
It is a marvellous series full of thrill, humour, unexpected twists, a little bit of romance and a great adventure. Bay's friendly banter with her cousins Clove and Thistle was funny. Aunt Tillie is a superb character. Bay's mother and her aunts do a great job as cooks and occasionally admonishing their naughty children for their mischief. Wonderful! Looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.
I enjoyed this book. At the end, the author comments on how her characters art for everybody. She talks about Snark and sarcasm. The relationship between the sisters reminds me of the relationship my sisters, and I had for many decades. Although it was fun at the time, I made a conscious decision to quit using sarcasm. anyway, it was a fun read. Much better than the previous two books.
Be forwarned....once you start reading this crazy wild story about some really wacked out witches who somehow always manage to find out strange going ons in between their bickering and fighting amongst themselves.....you will not want to stop reading their antics until the end and then want more!!! Loved all of it!!!
I loved these books! I laughed and giggled ,chuckled, and even snorted and choked. These cousins and their Aunt Tillie were hysterical ! The mysteries and trouble that they got into were pretty good also! I just read the first three books and I can't wait to get the next ones. Completely enjoyable!
I bought three books in a set and read them all over a two day period. I love the authors humor and sarcasm. The characters are fleshed out nicely so what theydo and say is understandable. I love/h ate Aunt Tillie, as do her family members. The books are very entertaining and I look forward to reading more. I want to hear more about Bay and Landon.
This series is so much fun to read and hard to keep down. The family dynamics is very good and only thing I find lacking is 'abracadabra'. You see, only magic that happens in any story in the series is usually in the last chapter in last 10 pages or so. That said, I loved every minute of it and would recommend it to anyone looking for fun family read.
