Unorthodox scientist Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler decided to go into business, forming a company specializing in paranormal investigations. Now, along with Winston Zeddemore and their “pet” ghost Slimer, they protect the world from the realm of the supernatural — as the Ghostbusters .
There’s something strange afoot in this latest volume of comic tales as the gang charge their proton packs once again to take on the world’s most ghastly ghouls, foolish phantoms and diabolical demons.
I first watched the Ghostbusters films when I was very young, back in the early ’90s, and I’ve rewatched them so many times I’ve genuinely lost count. I’ve also seen the newer films, which, in my opinion, are perfectly enjoyable and don’t deserve the criticism they often receive.
Because of my long-standing love for the franchise, I was a little disappointed with this comic collection. I had expected a longer, more cohesive storyline, but instead it’s made up of lots of short pieces. Some of them seem to exist purely for comic effect — and often very cheesy comic effect at that — without much substance or resolution. A few stories simply end on a pun rather than a satisfying conclusion.
Overall, the format makes it feel more like something designed for newspaper strips rather than a full graphic narrative. That said, it may well appeal more to hardcore Ghostbusters fans who are just happy to spend more time in that world.
