Winter vacation arrives and that means it’s time for Christmas dates and shrine visits and everything else we associate with the season. But will any of the other potential couples step up to the plate?
It still amazes me that this was not only in Shonen Jump, but that it was successfully in it for some time. This is the perfect amount of sweetness without turning cloying. I love the melodrama of good shojo, but these kids get the balance just right for romance.
Which doesn’t leave me much to say except pointing out some highlights. There is nothing more enjoyable to me than when this story focuses on Azuma and Taira. The way her friends lay into Azuma’s terrible taste in men at the start is more than just a way to show that she and Taira belong together.
No, Azuma’s entire attitude towards guys and attention is really obviously what leads her into the awful relationships she keeps lamenting. It’s also problematic when Taira digs into his own past and his woefully low self-esteem. These two are literally keeping themselves apart.
But problems were made to be overcome (hopefully). Needless to say, there’s at least one moment this volume between them that made me very, very happy.
There are a few other instances of just pushing things along until later - one first kiss and a confession both spring to mind - but I will actually allow it because of how incredibly charismatic this whole cast is.
Even if I don’t remember every name, I can tell you pretty much everybody’s whole personality and their particulars even having not read a volume since the last release. That means this story is, to me, just that good.
It says a lot that the main pairing is not my favorite part, but they’re completely awesome anyway. The way that Tani and Suzuki think about one another is very, very sweet and has a great balance between romance and hormones. That little moment with the snowfall is terribly cute.
There’s also the dialogue, which has a ring of truth to it, focused on kids being kids, yet with the hints of adulthood and maturity slowly beginning to creep into the mix. I guarantee I have had that conversation between Tani and Suzuki about the baguette with my wife.
Even better, it doesn’t neglect regular friendship or anything else. The way the guys are there for Taira or the girls make sure to plan to hang out are just some of the little things that add up to such a great big picture. It’s low-stakes, in one sense, but to this cast it’s clearly high stakes and that comes through. It’s very clever.
5 stars - there’s no part of this I would change and absolutely nothing I didn’t enjoy. If that doesn’t make for a perfect volume of manga, I’m not sure what does.
One thing that bugs me with Viz's translation is how they mess up the honorifics. Using "dear" when it's clearly meant to be "-chan" does not translate in remotely the same way, and it makes some of the interactions come off as incredibly awkward. I think those missing-the-mark translations are some of what makes certain scenes feel a little off.
Fortunately, that wasn't present too much in this volume, and all of the story was great.
I finally get Taira. It's not that I disliked him before, but he was always so down about everything that it was kind of hard to relate to him. And now, with his backstory, it finally makes sense. He really had tried to reinvent himself after his uncomfortable and largely friendless middle school years, which I get so very much. I think it's one of the first times I've seen an accurate portrayal of middle school in manga...or at least a depiction of what it was like for me, which I imagine is true for a lot of other people.
He changed his "look" to some extent, but honestly, he mostly just got taller and probably a little bit skinnier, which initially translated to girls being interested in him. He was tall and quiet and pretty good looking, so they thought of him as "cool" and one girl asked him out. But when he showed up on their first date in "uncool" clothes and acted like a normal guy on their date, she got disappointed and told her friends, who all gossiped about him in public places where he was totally able to hear everything.
Which is why he's so paranoid now when he sees girls looking in his direction and laughing...he is being overly paranoid, but it comes from very specific experiences of that genuinely being targeted at him.
It also explains a lot about his weirdness with Azuma, the only person who knew him during middle school. Sure, he's getting along well with new friends now, since he was fortunate enough to move past the shallow, gossipy girls to a group of people who don't particularly care about appearances and just enjoy having fun together. But he's constantly on edge thinking about the next time someone will see past his semi-cool exterior to the lame guy he still is underneath. Which everyone in middle school knew about him, and those girls in the early days of high school discovered too quickly.
It's all very stupid, but that's what teenage years are like. And people really can be that cruel.
Meanwhile, Azuma's too busy with her own issues to be thinking about how Taira has or hasn't changed. (She just thinks they get along well and is sad when he gets standoffish.) I loved how the other girls were able to identify Azuma's issues with horrible boyfriends. It makes so much sense. Basically: she accidentally trained herself to respond positively to anyone who makes an aggressive first move, no matter how obnoxious it is, because it shows clear interest and what she reads as playful energy.
In the end, though, those guys just move on to chatting up other girls and cheating on her, and she never gives the quieter, slower-paced relationships a chance to develop. So she's constantly ruining her own chances at real happiness.
While she does eventually want a good relationship - one like Suzuki's and Tani's - it's more important right now that she's developing good friendships and having a lot more fun just being around other people, which is what she wants most: a community.
Suzuki and Tani, meanwhile, make a few big leaps in their relationship, including their sort-of first kisses, and Suzuki meeting Tani's family. Loved that whole sequence and how well it showed the anxieties that go into unexpected and really important relationship milestones. Tani didn't really think about how much Suzuki might panic over making a good impression - she's so fun and bubbly and extroverted, why would she have any trouble meeting his perfectly ordinary and easy to get along with family?
But once he realized she was struggling, he immediately addressed it and made sure she was okay and felt supported. And while she tried to brush it off initially, she paused and admitted that he had put her in a tough spot with the short notice, and that she'd been having a tough time.
They're just so good together, but in ways that feel realistic and grounded and not overly sappy.
Yamada and Nishi are also making great progress! Nishi was so cute in this volume. Loved her shy embarrassment turning into giggles because she realized she was being silly and found the whole situation funny. Loved no-thoughts-only-act Yamada actually spending time agonizing over when and how to tell Nishi that he genuinely likes her and wants to date for real.
A very solid volume with a lot of significant relationship growth all around.
Wonderful! Now that I’m past the anime-only stuff, I’m going through it a little more quickly. I love how holidays are shown in manga, it makes me ache for those slow days when there was no school.
I’m excited for the new year! Slightly worried about their classes though. Early prediction…. Suzuki, Tani, Nishi, and Yamada in one class and Taira and Azuma in another class. But I can also see Suzuki and Tanj being separated. We shall see….
Seriously though I love this story so much. Give me everything. I'm also really starting to enjoy Taira with whom I struggled with at first. The stories are just pulling on my heart strings and I cannot wait for more.
I'm so sad that this is coming to an end soon. I just found myself rereading certain parts because they just made me smile so much.
I love everyone's awkwardness in this vol so damn much! Taira was a character I wasn't that fond of, but with each chapter I really feel like I'm rooting for him more and more. He's been so, so hurt and I feel like he's feeling growing pains worse than everybody else. I hope he can be happy and supported and feel content and confident! I really like watching him grow!
How is this seriously this cute? I love it. They are so cute and a little awkward but so honest and kind to one another. The art is cute as well. I am here for our second couple becoming official, I need that ASAP. The third one, I am hopeful in growth feeling good and comfortable with themselves. And our main couple, crushing it as always! SO SWEEEETTTTTTT.
OMG!!! Azuma and Taira need to admit that they like each other already… it at least they need to find some middle ground where they’re not super awkward.
I love how lots of characters are getting to shine, not just Suzuki and Tani (though I love those two as well). I really like how the story shows a bunch of kids being realistic kids, not just shoving people together and saying, “Fall in love now.”
4.5 🌟 Finished the anime and immediately sought out the manga. This is so indulgently sweet and wholesome I’m always kicking my feet. It’s also funny? I don’t know it makes me nostalgic in a fond way instead of a melancholic way. Happy cute vibes 💕
Another cute addition to the series and I see that things are coming to a head for certain characters that I’m excited to see how it pans out in the next volume.
