Could they ever be more than friends?

Jake was Stephanie's employer... her best friend ... and if he hadn't had to rescue her from a gang of youths two years ago, he could have been so much more....

Now there was an invisible barrier between them, which—until recently—Jake had patiently respected. He alone knew why Stephanie shied away from men, understood why she had to confront her fear before putting the past behind them both.

But Stephanie couldn't cross the line separating friend from lover without first facing a greater fear—the fear of losing the man who meant everything to her.

Penelope Jones Halsall
aka Caroline Courtney, Annie Groves, Lydia Hitchcock, Melinda Wright

Penelope "Penny" Jones was born on November 24, 1946 at about seven pounds in a nursing home in Preston, Lancashire, England. She was the first child of Anthony Winn Jones, an engineer, who died at 85, and his wife Margaret Louise Groves Jones. She has a brother, Anthony, and a sister, Prudence "Pru".

She had been a keen reader from the childhood - her mother used to leave her in the children's section of their local library whilst she changed her father's library books. She was a storyteller long before she began to write romantic fiction. At the age of eight, she was creating serialized bedtime stories, featuring make-believe adventures, for her younger sister Prue, who was always the heroine. At eleven, she fell in love with Mills & Boon, and with their heroes. In those days the books could only be obtained via private lending libraries, and she quickly became a devoted fan; she was thrilled to bits when the books went on full sale in shops and she could have them for keeps.

Penny left grammar school in Rochdale with O-Levels in English Language, English Literature and Geography. She first discovered Mills & Boon books, via a girl she worked with. She married Steve Halsall, an accountant and a "lovely man", who smoked and drank too heavily, and suffered oral cancer with bravery and dignity. Her husband bought her the small electric typewriter on which she typed her first novels, at a time when he could ill afford it. He died at the beginning of 21st century.

She earned a living as a writer since the 1970s when, as a shorthand typist, she entered a competition run by the Romantic Novelists' Association. Although she didn't win, Penny found an agent who was looking for a new Georgette Heyer. She published four regency novels as Caroline Courtney, before changing her nom de plume to Melinda Wright for three air-hostess romps and then she wrote two thrillers as Lydia Hitchcock. Soon after that, Mills and Boon accepted her first novel for them, Falcon's Prey as Penny Jordan. However, for her more historical romance novels, she adopted her mother's maiden-name to become Annie Groves. Almost 70 of her 167 Mills and Boon novels have been sold worldwide.

Penny Halsall lived in a neo-Georgian house in Nantwich, Cheshire, with her Alsatian Sheba and cat Posh. She worked from home, in her kitchen, surrounded by her pets, and welcomed interruptions from her friends and family.

Re the Friendship Barrier - leave it to PJ to have an h recover from a physical attack by having the H assault her some more. Because this is HPlandia, it works of course - and because it was PJ I believed the H when he said he did it out of frustrated love. Never mind that with any other author I would be grabbing the skillet to use on the H who behaves like a frustrated two year old being denied candy, my PJ bias just gives him a pass.

The h has been the H's secretary for two years. She is normally an old-fashioned,reserved girl but on the way home one night, she is attacked and almost assaulted except the H jumps in and saves her. She is very grateful for his help and continually thinks about their special platonic "friendship". Recently tho things have begun to change, the H starts looking at her with bitterness and contempt, and this is really distress the h.

(Now I know not everyone is as big a PJ junkie as I am, so for those who need adult beverage support to get through her writing, I recommend drinking every time the h thinks what a "special relationship" her and the H have. You'll be more than comfortable by chapter three at the latest)

So special friendship aside, the H regularly appears with a variety of lovely supermodel types. He is apparently unsatisfied with the buffet of beauties he frequents because he keeps pushing the h into physical embraces, telling her she has to do it to prove she trusts him. (I admit I did feel like I was in high school at these moments, I kept waiting for the h to call strike three as they struggle in the front seat of the car.)

The h initially have a very strong panic reaction (PTSD here anyone?), but with the H's continual taunting, she finally experiences something like desire. Then the H is photographed with a very venomous anti-h OW and the h starts to get jealous. They go back and forth for a bit, as these things always do, and things finally come to a head when they travel to Florida for business. The h surrenders to the H and mutual ecstasy is achieved, but the h retreats in the usual PJ h shyness/insecuity/he-doesn't-love-me-like-I-love-him mess.

The h winds up going out of town with the H's business contact while the H takes care of some meetings. The H is jealous of the OM who has made no bones about the attractiveness of the h. They wind up getting caught in a hurricane and staying the night in the OM's house with his fiancee. They try to tell the H about the storm but he only hears the h is staying with OM.

Thus follows HPLandia rule # 6 -- The H will ALWAYS believe that any virginal h, once they have embraced the mutual passion together, will go right out and start spreading herself around. Despite having lived a chaste and virtuous life for twenty odd years prior, the H believes that one touch of his magic lurve club and the h is instantly transformed into a promiscuous tart who will go off with anyone.

The H accuses the h of sleeping with the OM, she has a bruise from the accident and the H now decides his physical impositions have been too gentle and decides to really get rough, cause apparently she likes that in a man. Before he can complete his physical dominion, the doorbell rings and it is the fiancee bringing the h's watch back. The H finally realizes that he was wrong, avows true love forever and implies that even though he was running thru the lovely ladies like a rapid waterfall, he couldn't get physically busy with them. The h is overjoyed, loves him back and HEA.

So we can now see the curative powers of this universe, only in HPlandia do we have the magic potency of the H's forceful caress used as a cure-all to overcome the trauma of a violent physical attack, and only in HPlandia can an H be personally offended by a blind panic reaction from an h as a result of that attack.

While I doubt the ability of such a cure to work half as well in the real world, at least we get a decent story with a nice HEA and the poor h is now fully recovered, liberated to love and be happy with the power of the H's mighty lurve club.

"The Friendship Barrier" is the story of Stephanie and Jake.

A sweet love story with a scarred heroine and an utterly besotted hero. The heroine is traumatized after an almost sexual assault, and spends her time running away from and avoiding all men, including her boss- the hero. As he changes his attitude towards her, she finally starts realizing his importance in her life..including the reciprocation of their attraction. After a lot of drama and relentless yearning, they find their HEA.

A good one time read.

Romance writers need to be locked up in barns and have it drilled into them that rape victims (and/or almost rape victims) need therapy from a licensed counselor or psychologist. Not a magical penis. 🤦🏽‍♀️

I actually kind of really liked it. This was quite different from your usual HP MCs where they have a working / platonic friends relationship. PJ writes great angst and extreme territorial Hs so I was in happy lala land.

The h is secretary to the H. She considers him a close just-friend and doesn’t necessarily take notice of him beyond that. The h is scarred where she recoils from any kind of close proximity to a man. She was almost raped but the H saved her before it could happen.

Jake has been lusting after Steph for a while but regrets that with his playing saviour to her incident, he lost on any hope of ever pursuing her.

I disliked the portrayal of the h’s aversion with physical contact. It was totally blown up and had weird after effects like nausea. The h felt nauseous when the H would hold her arm or if she saw him make out with OW. Weird a$$ shit.

Soon enough the H loses all calm. He’s beyond frustrated and decides to finally test waters. To his surprise the h isn’t actually repugnant to his touch so there’s hope for him.

I lovedddd hot and bothered Jake. He was angry, demanding and possessive. The h kept giving pointless excuses to maintain that she was immune to his touch but inside she was dying to be held and soothed out of her trauma.

I’d have liked to see the h less crazy and distressed. Jake was head over heels and would lay out his soul for her. There was no epilogue sadly. Can never get enough PJ in my life. Recommend!

I wanted to like this more than I did. It contains tropes I'm a fan of and is written by my favorite Harlequin Mills & Boon author. But it wasn't meant to be.

Jake vents out a lot of frustration on Stephanie, wanting more than just friendship and a working relationship with her. Jake's attitude made him look selfish, and pushed poor Stephanie into a more nervous state. Jake should have been more patient with Stephanie than he was, especially since he loved her. Or at a minimum, Jake should have just told Stephanie the truth. Relieving his burden would have been better than being so frustrated all the time. As for Stephanie, I thought her fear of men and sex was overblown because she had not been raped, just nearly so.

Anyway, two frustrating lead characters did not lead to a romantic read for me.

I was going to stop reading this but went on to read stellar reviews about the writing, and the angst. I then went back to the book, from a slightly different angle: instead of the quick, entertaining read I was first going for, I would examine the writing, and the subtlety of the story telling. To be honest, Penny Jordan has never been a fave of mine, and I'm always surprised to see her star power. So then, I decided this would be the occasion for me to study her, and understand... Well, I understood! haha.
This story is not my fave, as usual the man is a bit too macho, too demanding for my taste. The heroine is even worst, very unlikable. Yes, I did sympathize with her past abuse and her trauma, I also found her cold and judgemental towards her great, nice very friendly roommate. I thought she treated the woman almost like a pet, wanting her to be seen but not heard. But I must admit the writing really pulled the story off and Penny Jordan was able to humanize these two paragons.
I was also thankful for the lack of b-word (unless I missed it?) and outward violence from the hero (although he could be cutting and even aggressive).

This was my very first HP, and I fell in love and have not looked back. I love this story! Is it believable, no, probably not. But it hits all my buttons....She works for him, he was attracted to her but she was tramatized shortly after and they never got to explore that attraction. He has decided to give it one last shot to see if he can get thru to her. I really like how the h seems so confused about the attraction and how to handle it. It was written before it was common to have some of the H's point of view, but I think the author lets us know that he is attracted to her, so you feel like you understand most of his actions. Good solid HP read, although a little dated now!

I liked this one pretty well Penny Jordan does a good job with a hero who is secretly in love with the heroine -- showing just enough of his feelings to make you like him despite his cruelty, but not so much that there's no tension. Sex scene was kind of odd -- they both spent a lot of time kissing thighs. And then he "licked her face dry" at the end (even though she hadn't actually shed tears, and even so imagining someone licking your face all over is pretty weird)? Anyway, decent older Penny Jordan story.

Two years ago, the h was assaulted by a few guys. She wasn’t raped, the H came to her rescue when he heard her screaming, but they did manage to almost undress her.

The H is the h’s employer and he has been in love and lust with his secretary since the moment he first saw her. But since that assault she is afraid of men.

After two years the H decides he has waited long enough. The h refuses to go to therapy and he sees her getting worse instead of better.

Nice read. The H tries to win the h over and break through the barriers of friendship she has set.

Getting out of the Friendzone is a risky thing to do, because there’s a possibility you could lose it all.

Auntie Penny is here, with all her old school heart and beliefs.
I cannot not love her, despite it is so politically not correct, or maybe just because of this.
As usual, PJ heroines are afraid of sex, and very shy, inexperienced and proper. They can only have sex with one man in their life, or two, but only one is the one who will be able to give them pleasure. They also can have sex after they’ve refused this one man several times, and after saying no no no no no, they will say yes and they will turn into tigers of sex.
This one, poor soul, has also had a traumatic experience because she was almost raped and the hero, her new boss, saved her.
After two years, they’ve been friends, and he knows he can’t even touch one hand of hers, since she’s not just the usual pj heroine, but a traumatized one, which makes her more chaste than a nun.
He on the other hand, has a turnover of women he dates and leaves.
Lately though, he watches her with different eyes and tries to touch and kiss her, which of course she misunderstands and thinks he’s just pining for the gf of the month.
So, after several aborted attempts she lets him make love to her, and after another misunderstanding where he accuses her of sleeping with another man, he reveals that he’s been in love with her for two years and she confesses her love for him.
So, very cute and incorrect book, where the heroine PTSD is confused for weakness because she should be over her trauma after two years, by god! Lol!
And the hero, well the hero has the worst case of blue balls in the history of romances because he’s been celibate and unable to touch other woman but when he’s around her he’s hard as steel. And now he’s hurting physically. Reading that he whimpered and even couldn’t stand because of his impossible ahem attraction for the heroine was really hilarious. Really! And the heroine couldn’t understand what he had, she was such a naive clueless woman!
So, refreshing and cute in a very not modern kind of way, that I appreciated, especially since the heroine couldn’t understand was celibate since he met her, despite her reticence.
The hero’s unreasonable behavior is of course excused as usual in pj romances, because of his great love for her that brings him to be jealous, possessive and insecure as a child deprived of his favorite toy. A cute couple these two, and it was very refreshing.

10%: WTF is wrong with you, Jake, you absolute turd gibbon?

15%: the best way to build trust with a woman is to lie about wanting to be platonic friends, then sexually assaulting her, obviously.

20%: I guess if sexual assault and sexual harassment don't work, being a total jackass is sure to win her over.

30%: I'll just let S-N-P take this one:
"If I want to take a guy home with me tonight
It's none of your business
And she want to be a freak and sell it on the weekend
It's none of your business"

35%: oh yes, the old "spreading rumors about how slutty your crush is until she falls into your bed" gambit. Works every time.

45%: she doesn't know anything because you have not told her anything. Try using your words.

70%: it's important to remember that a woman's rape is just as traumatic for her man. :-/

I give up. Sorry, I thought it sounded good from the book blurb, but I'm not willing to stick it out and wait for him to start acting like a man in love.

A simple yet good read. Not too innovative in the story line however nonetheless a good read. I did feel it was a little drawn out with the most interesting part of the story toward the end. Good book for holiday reading or as a filler.
