Deadpool: Die Wette

Rate this book

EL Chimichanga is strong in this one!

This TPB edition collects “Deadpool: Games of Death”, “Deadpool: Suicide Kings” #1-5, “Marvel Digital Special Holiday” #2, “Deadpool” #900, “Deadpool” #1000, “X-Men Origins: Deadpool”, along with some material from “Marvel Spotlight: Deadpool” and a cover gallery. ( Dang! That’s a lot of reading in one single book! By the way… Hello, Goodreads Users!!! It’s me, Wade Wilson, EL Deadpool! I employed my super duber secret Chimichanga powers to infiltrate this review! Sssh!!! )

Creative Team:

Writers: Mike Benson, Adam Glass, Fred Van Lente, Jason Aaron, Joe Kelly ( Oooooh, he is cool! I owe my mojo to him! ), Duane Swierczynski ( Frak! And I thought that that Babylon-5 guy had a complicated last name to spell! ), Victor Gischler, Charlie Huston, David Lapham, Rick Remender, Peter Bagge, Howard Chaykin ( I am not worthy! I am not worthy! ), Tim Hamilton, Rob Williams, Cullen Bunn, Michael Kupperman, Dean Haspiel, John Rhett Thomas, Jess Harold & Chris Arrant.

Illustrators: Shawn Crystal, Carlo Barberi, Sanford Greene, Chris Staggs, Dalibor Talajic, Damion Scott, Rob Liefeld ( Daddy! You made it! Where’s Mommy Fabian? ), Kyle Baker, Paco Medina ( EL Paco! ), David Lapham, Jerome Opeña, Denys Cowan, Peter Bagge, Howard Chaykin ( I am still not worthy! I am still not worthy! ), Tim Hamilton, Phil Bond ( Bond. Phil Bond. , Matteo Scalera, Michael Kupperman, Dean Haspiel & Leandro Fernandez.

DEADPOOL: INSANE OR NOT?

I am a hardcore Deadpool fan since a long time ago ( Don’t believe him, dudes! He just barely knew some loose facts about Deadpool a couple of days ago! And just like tons of people now, after watching my movie last Thursday (February 11th, 2016), was when he just became fan of mel! ) and of course I have an extensive Deadpool comic book collection. ( Oooooh! He has no shame! He only owns this wretched TPB about me and it was bought AFTER watching the movie! By the way, if you haven’t watched my movie yet, what the heck are you doing here? Go! You can read this mediocre review later! It won’t go anywhere, but you can go to the nearest theater and help me to increase my box office!!! )

Well, to be blunt honest, I only knew some basic stuff about Deadpool, but since I loved the movie, I wanted to read something about the character and having some presence in my comic book collection. ( Since I exposed him, now he is playing the “honest card”, mmh? But wait, he can’t read me, I am cloaked infiltrated, he doesn’t know that I exposed him. Mmh… )

You can perceive the character as only a looney wacko ( Who is a looney wacko?! Ah?! Who?!!! Oh, yes, me. Who cares?! ), but you must pondering about that one of the main reasons that he is considered a madman by his friends, colleagues and enemies, is that he says that he is a comic book character, and well…

…he is a comic book character! ( Wow, he discovered the warm water! Bravo, Maestro! Standing ovation! His brain must be melting after that effort! )

Therefore, how much insane really can be Deadpool if he is aware of a true fact that the rest of his fellow characters don’t have a single clue? ( Dang, man! He’s so full of…! )

DEADPOOL FIESTA

This TPB besides having the storyline that it gives it the title, Suicide Kings, where Deadpool join/clash forces with The Punisher, Daredevil and Spiderman ( Dang! It’s supposed to be a book about me and now I have to share action with all those losers?! ) to clear his name ( Hahaha! Now, that’s hilarious! You can clear my name, not even with Tide Ultra Stain Release! ) of a crime that he didn’t commit ( Well, that’s a first! ); also the TPB contains a large list of short stories ( Finally! Something that he told right! ) written and drawn by several talents, giving you a widespread spectrum ( Mmh… I won’t tell you what came to my mind! ) of the vast potential in Deadpool stories ( Well, if he was impressed with this measly TPB, he should read all the others too! Dang! Deadpool fan…ha! ).

Deadpool engaged into an illegal TV reality fight show, invaded Santa Claus’ headquarters, having vacations with Doc Ock, silent running with mimes, psychiatric sessions, etc… ( Believe it or not, that’s all true! What? Don’t laugh at my life!!! Kimota!!! Oops! No! That’s not my magic word… mmh… dang! How the heck am I gonna say Chimichanga backwards?!!! Now I know why I won’t be ever EL MILAGROPOOL! ).

Deadpool does everything to everybody here. ( Now I am blushing! )

Don’t wait and read it! ( Or you can watch my movie instead! Cheaper and quicker! )

"Since when do you come to the aid of mass murderers?" -- Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher

"Hey! First, I only kill for money. Second, look who's talking. Third . . ." - Wade Wilson, a.k.a. Deadpool

"Because he's innocent, Frank. He's annoying, but he didn't commit this crime." -- Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil

With Deadpool & Wolverine currently earning top box office cheddar - and may it help correct the course of the increasingly flailing and pandering Marvel Cinematic Universe, seemingly on a rocky downhill slide ever since Avengers: End Game - it's arguably a relevant moment to jump back and enjoy the team-up miniseries known as Deadpool: Suicide Kings from 2009. Everyone's favorite 'merc with a mouth' is ostensibly hired to perform a hit in the opening pages, but things go sideways and the plot gets appropriately twisty, leading to the arrival of not one but THREE vigilante guest stars - The Punisher, Daredevil, and Spider-Man - respectively playing the familial type roles of angry dad, benevolent uncle, and competitive kid brother to the mouthy title character. It's a ridiculously fun and fast-moving tale that is often graphically violent (naturally) or tastelessly quippy (wouldn't expect anything less) - as the blood is flowing and jokes are cracking with equal measure - and it's capped by a non-connected but uproarious short story featuring Deadpool going undercover as an ancient martial arts master (resembling Pai Mei from Kill Bill, Vol. 2) on a deadly reality game show in China.

Deadpool is not your normal superhero. He's completely insane, ridiculously ugly and has a tendency of fucking up everything when he gets the chance. On the positive side, his limbs grow back out when they're cut off (very practical), he's a devoted Metallica fan, and the self-declared Shogun of Sarcasm!

With the important and obvious exception of Batman, superheroes are normally not my kind of thing at all. Especially not superhero comics. So I was mildly skeptical going into this. But fortunately, this guy is pretty fabulous.

The comic itself was entertaining most of the time. There are boring sections, and since you don't really get to know any of the people involved, it's hard to care about them. It's pretty obvious that the whole thing relies pretty heavily on the protagonist as its only real strength, but then again it helps quite a lot.

Overall: nothing special, but great fun!

Good solid fun with some good laughs and some of my favourite characters, Spiderman, Punisher and Daredevil.

The only thing every deadpool comic I've read has in common is a decent storyline that keeps you hooked, but nonetheless he is a great character.

Not bad, though the last short at the end was gratuitous and the artwork wasn’t great.

Also, what is up with The Punisher? How about getting ALL of the info and not just going off of what the media is portraying?

I did LOVE the banter between Deadpool and Spider-Man. Humor will always get me every time.

And the Outlaw part was sweet.

So 3.5 stars, rounded down for that last short.

3, without that last one it would have been higher I think, stars.

The five issue miniseries is really a very typical Deadpool story. Which begs the question: why bother releasing it as a mini, instead of just as five issues of Deadpool? (Answer: Money, of course. Deadpool was selling.) It is a decent story, with an elevated level of violence even for Deadpool. Tombstone makes for a credible villain here. (I have no idea if this is normal or not, since I don't read much Spidey.) Probably would have been better if it hadn't shoehorned Punisher and Dardevil and Spider-Man into the story. Punisher is the only one whose appearance seems better thought out than "maybe this will help the book sell more". The one-shot story is a gleefully, absurdly violent take on a Hunger Games style reality show, and so much enjoys its own slapstick comedy that the darker ending comes as a bit of a surprise. A welcome one, though, and overall a better story than the mini had been.

Maybe more of a 3.5 rounded up, but Deadpool is almost always good, dumb fun and this is no exception.

This volume will always have a special place in my heart because it is what spawned the "Marvel Red Team" craze on Tumblr several years ago, which was a whole host of fanworks featuring Deadpool, Daredevil, and Spider-man together [the Punisher mostly got left out because his uniform is the wrong color I guess]. There are definitely some great memories for here both in the actual comic itself and in the fan community that came out of it. I love pretty much all the characters that appear here so it's great to see them all thrown together for a little bit.

A few panels over on Tumblr: [1] [2] [3] [4]

It also features the Games of Death oneshot which is just dumb as hell but again pretty fun in general and also moves quickly enough to be entertaining. [1]

Third time's a charm. This was my third (and possibly final) attempt to read a Deadpool book, because I always figured the combo of brutal violence and sarcastic 4th wall humour would be my kinda thing. Sadly, the first 2 tries turned me off quite a bit.
I'm happy to say that Mike Benson's 5 issue series was exactly what I hoped Deadpool would be. There's laugh out loud jokes, snicker jokes, and a ton of insane violence.
It also helps that Deadpool is framed for a crime, and the Punisher comes after him...throw in Daredevil and Spider-Man and a Spidey 2nd tier villain and you've got quite a combo.

The stand alone 'Game$ of Death' is a riot, where Wade ends up in a to the death version of Survivor. There's some nice parodies of Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Steven Segal and some other 'luminaries'.

This was what I wanted. A fun, funny, Deadpool who still gets violent, but never gets boring.

This is the place to start if you want an intro to Deadpool that will get you ready for more. Start elsewhere and you could find yourself not interested again, which would be a loss...

Snarky but not Sexy

Deadpool is a foul-mouthed snarkster, weirdly lovable — or at least if one keeps the actor Ryan Reynolds in mind.

This graphic novel version presents a Deadpool who is snarky but less entertaining, and one who is not sex-mad unless it involves big breasts. In other words, this particular volume does not fan the sparks of the heated romance between Deadpool and Spiderman.

Maybe I'm just too cranky to appreciate the finer points here, but rounded down to 3 stars.

Dedpul u svom najkrvavijem sjaju.

Deadpool: Suicide Kings was an alright read. It’s my first brush with Deadpool and I’ll probably read more about him but I get the feeling I’m going to think most of it is just alright. So you’re probably wondering why I would continue to read about him, right? Well, he’s an asshole. And for some reason he’s says just enough ridiculous stuff and offends just enough people for me to want to read more of his comics.

For those of you who haven’t read much about Deadpool I’m just going to let you know that you won’t learn a whole hell of a lot about him from this comic. Here is what I learned: he’s mouthy as crap, he regenerates, he’s ugly and therefore wears a mask, and he hears voices. I have no idea why he regenerates or if there is even a way to kill him. I also don’t know why he hears voices. Is he just nuts or was there something else involved that made him like that?

If you're in the mood for racist garbage by two hacky white guys best known for writing for Entourage, then this is the shitty comic collection for you. The woman are all Hooters waitresses for the characters to gawk at. The Black people, including the albino Tombstone (a frequent Spider-Man character), are all criminals who speak in mid-90s slang cliches. Tombstone doesn't speak this way in any of the Spider-Man comics I've read, where he is featured. It's purely done because Mike Benson thought it was funny in 2009. Hopefully, he's matured a bit since then. But this book did not get better with age. Carlo Barberi's art is wasted on this crap story.

It's a shame because a book about Deadpool having to prove his innocence to Daredevil, Spider-Man, and Punisher, while simultaneously trying to take on Tombstone should be fun. Instead everyone but Deadpool is wildly out of character, and Deadpool is only in-character in the sense that he fits in with the Fabien Nicieza and Frank Tieri runs on Deadpool. It's a version that has soured with time.

The very first page of the the Game$ of Death story feature another Black character betting on a Praying Mantis fight saying "Yo, fiddy on the mini-Mantis", so I stopped reading. If this is the flavor of shitty comic you enjoy, you are welcome to it. I'm not wasting my time reading anything else with Benson's name on it.

About the Comic: Deadpool takes up the oddest of jobs. From needing to clear his good…. his normal name, to a double crossing and a bet. From hunting down predators, to saving goats. All with intermissions of having to fight himself, both mentally and physically, as sometimes it’s just an existential crisis, but other times – someone made clones of you…

My Opinion: Every chapter is very different, and very interesting, as when it comes to Deadpool – you never really know what you’ll get. Dark humor remains a staple, as our sassy-kinda-hero goes onto his rampages. It’s why he’s the only superhero I can stand.

This was fine. It reeked of 2000's era Marvel sexism where the only women in the entire book ALL are in their underwear and are only mentioned in reference to having sex with them, but that aside it was fun enough. The story and art were both solid and kept me engaged and the character writing between Deadpool, Punisher, Daredevil and Spidey were all pretty excellent. Spiderman was funny and light-hearted in the way he should be in a Team up book and Daredevil had a sense of moral righteousness to him with felt right. Punisher was oddly funny and was maybe the highlight of the book for me. Additionally I really enjoyed Tombstone and I always enjoy seeing a lesser known Spidey foe given a chance to shine in another book.

This is so 2009. The tropes, the girls, the violence. It all screams low-key sexist early 2000's content. Don't get me wrong, it was entertaining and well written. It's just a product of its time, that's all.

Over all, it's not Deadpool at it's best, but it's pretty good nonetheless.
