I’ve thought a lot these days about what makes a great Star Trek story. A lot of recent issues I’ve had with the newer series (besides the 10-episode seasons giving zero breathing room for characterization) are that many stories serve a storytelling form instead of balancing a message, even if cheesy or cringe. You can make a lot of jokes about how a significant amount of Star Trek is people sitting around in a boardroom talking.

As a middle-aged queer person who has loved Star Trek for the vast majority of my life, I am thrilled to have so many more canonically and clearly queer characters in Star Trek. (Take that, Berman!)

The best story here (5/5 stars) is “Love’s First Bloom” by Jarrett Melendez, Kiku Hughes, and Bex Glendining. It follows Jay-Den and Kyle on a date, showing their cultural differences in how humans and Klingons approach flirting and publicly declaring a relationship. It's a classic Trek message of cultural understanding, but in a fun way. The story also adds more characterization to Kyle and his and Jay-Den’s dynamic in a way the show didn’t have time for. I think Starfleet: Academy was underrated, and this short story builds on its mythology seamlessly.

I'm slowly getting back into Star Trek after years away, and comics like this, remind me how much I love Star Trek and how it's for all of us.

This comprises 6 vignettes following various LGBTQ+ characters from across the various series. The art is delightful and each story is small but impactful and fun.
