Something To Prove
The Hound. The Guard. The Poster Boy.
Vincent Harrow buried six girls. Since then, he’s failed dozens more. His newest assignment should be just another file. Instead, she’s one coincidence away from driving him mad. Wow! This novella was an emotional journey, and I am so glad I got to read it! It really built upon the first book and answered so many of my questions (while also creating new ones that I hope I'll get to see the answers to in book 2)!
This novella centers around the three male main characters from Nothing to Prove, giving insight into their own journeys/thoughts and motivations. I really can't decide who I like more, Vincent or Colt! I feel like I can relate to Vincent on some levels (definitely not to the same extent though lol), he is just such a complex character, and I liked that about him. Colt was sweet as always, and I love the way he cares for Maysie even if he doesn't have the same history with her as the others do. Maverick is also complex, but I feel like there are more layers to him that we'll get to figure out in the next book.
This novella really benefitted from its quick pacing and multiple POVs, and I feel like a tandem read would be the best way to read the first book. I'm still a bit confused about some things, and my constructive criticism would be that some things need a little bit more explaining to make sense to the average reader (who also easily forgets what happened in books they've read prior lol).
Overall, I'm really hoping to get to find out what happens soon! The cliffhanger from NOT feels even more crazy with the additional information we have now, and now I just need to know what happens next!

Okay, this book adds so much depth to book one. It is an absolute must-read after finishing Nothing Out There. I almost wish parts of this story had been woven into the original book so readers could experience everything happening at the same time. At the same time, I understand why it wasn't. Experiencing book one solely through Maisie/Estelle's perspective makes the reveals in Something to Prove even more impactful.
Even if you finished Nothing Out There and thought it was just okay, I genuinely think you need to read Something to Prove before deciding how you feel about the series. It completely changed how I viewed book one.
It also adds a layer that felt intentionally subtle the first time around. The romance is only hinted at in book one, but seeing the story from other perspectives gives so much context to how the male leads truly feel about Maisie/Estelle. It made me want to immediately go back and reread the final chapters of Nothing Out There with all of this new information in mind.
If there were ever a special edition that combined both books into one chronological story, I would buy it in a heartbeat!
I've seen reviews saying Nothing Out There was repetitive and that some scenes could have been cut. After reading Something to Prove, I actually think that repetition was intentional. In a program built around wiping memories, routines, and control, repetition is part of the experience. It makes the reader feel some of the same monotony the characters do.
This book also puts so much into perspective. It deepens your understanding of Maisie/Estelle, her fears, and just how little control she really has over what's happening around her. It also expands on the hierarchy of the program and makes so many moments from book one click into place.
I finished this book with even more questions than answers, but in the best possible way. I already want to reread the ending of Nothing Out There because I know I'll see it completely differently now.
If you're reading this series, don't skip Something to Prove. It feels like an essential part of the story.

Im absolutely baffled. Blown out of my mind. This toppled over all my expectations.
Something to Prove is a companion novella to Nothing Out There, following our 3 beloved MMCs -The Hound, The Guard and The Poster Boy. Each one different. Each one connected.
The Hound (or Vincent, if you will) is a truly layered character, who's chapters were not easy to read because of how much PAIN I felt while reading them. His story was smeared with guilt, pressure, stress and mania. Thrown into a game nobody wanted to play, he had to learn without mistakes, or he'd be punished. Perfection was expected. He truly was an interesting, multilayered character thar you need to get to know before you assess who he is (and he is also my favorite).
The Guard has orders. Purpose. Responsibility. He is softer, more open, but with a burden he carries for his family. His upbringing made me feel like sobbing (in the middle of a public space, mind you). He offered comfort even when he needed it himself and I think that makes him even more honorable than he would've been. He put up with so much. I just want to protect him 🥹
The Poster Boy. Maverick Ashford, a name carrying honor, money and power. He was a mentor, so he "shaped" the girls into their new, clean minds. He was ruthless, cruel, rude, disrespectful and very pompous, lightly said. This is also a character who you cannot judge at first sight, because theres so much more to him than what shows. I am not saying what he did has an excuse, but I understand why he is the way he is. He has all of these responsibilities and burdens he has to carry. Unfortunately, his coping mechanism is not the healthiest.
In the end, I think you should read this novella after Nothing Out There. It offers you explanation and important information for later. I was GAGGED by the end, and I cannot wait for another book. The game is about to begin.

I loved learning more about the boys! This book seriously filled in so many missing pieces from NOT, while also leaving me with so many more questions! 😅
And can we talk about the slow burn!? I'm still not fully sure who the love interest is!! All the boys were yearning so hard... except for Maverick... he's yearning for something, but I can’t fully say what yet...
My favorite character was probably Colt! He is just such a sweetheart. He truly and deeply cares for Maysie without even having the full idea of what's happening!

A worthy addition to the Ellington Project universe!
Mae Harcourt's strong confidence in the world and characters she has created is front and center in this companion novella. Not only does this offer new perspectives on the story. It also adds new hidden details I didn't notice before and even answers a few of the pressing questions I had. Mae's incredible talents shine in the visual imagery and intense emotion that feels poetic.
Colt's POV offers an intriguing look into how life is really like for the enforcers of the program. We discover they are just as much victims as the girls being tested. All were forced into a role they never asked to play and have to obey every order given without any hesitation.
Maverick is of course despicable as always often portrayed as a self-entitled bully. However, I am still curious to see what lies beneath the surface. I'm left wondering how he ended up like this and who may have hurt him in the past causing the bitterness he feels now. I don't necessarily expect a full on redemption, but part of me thinks he does have a heart deep down.
The heart of the novella comes from Vincent's POV. We see a young man broken with grief and the weight of his failures. He too is trapped in a prison in which he's forced to play the role everyone expects him to. He has to hide his burdens in the face of his authorities. You can't help but feel his pain. I stated in my Nothing Out There review that Vincent had the strongest character growth. And his story in this novella further solidifies that claim.
Now I chose to read this in tandem with Nothing Out There. However, I strongly suggest reading the latter entirely first as several key plot points are spoiled in the novella.

This novella was AMAZING. After reading Nothing Out There, I couldn’t wait for Something To Prove. Having 3 POVs explained a lot about the characters (Vincent, Colt and Maverick) and gave a lot of information about their pasts.
The Hound- Vincent’s POV was full of pain, guilt and love and I felt every emotion through the pages. Reading about him made me see how much he was hurting and how he was able to stay strong even when it was exhausting. He was my favorite in NOT, but now I love him even more!
The Poster Boy- Maverick’s POV got me frustrated at him but I was also able to see him from a new perspective. Clearly, there’s more to his connection with Maysie/Estelle than he admits. This book made me curious to read his story, even though I didn’t like Maverick as a person.
The Guard- Colt’s POV was so sweet and made me realize how much he cared about Maysie! Seeing his emotions helped me understand how he experienced things that happened in NOT, as well as everything else he was going through. Colt has been through so much and still wanted to comfort Maysie. Not everything was about Maysie, of course; reading about his life as a guard who offered everything so his family could stay alive was heartbreaking but fascinating at the same time.
After reading this incredible book, I certainly can’t wait for book 2! If you liked Nothing Out There, you should definitely not skip this novella.

Mae Harcourt has done it again!
Something to Prove is an AMAZING companion novella to Nothing Out There. It gave me everything I wanted, and more!
I devoured this book in one sitting, struggling through blurry eyes because I HAD to keep reading. (I think it’s safe to say these boys are some of my favorite MMCs)
I was VERY happy to get glimpses into the 3 boys' lives in the program. It really helped me see their characters and the storyline in a different light.
I enjoyed every POV, no matter how much I loved or hated the character. It gave depth to Nothing Out There by providing both character development and inside information that we didn’t originally know. It gave a whole new side to the story without introducing an overwhelming amount of new information.

Something to Prove is an AMAZING companion novella to Nothing Out There. It gave me everything I wanted, and more!
I devoured this book in one sitting, struggling through blurry eyes because I HAD to keep reading. (I think it’s safe to say these boys are some of my favorite MMCs)
I was VERY happy to get glimpses into the 3 boys' lives in the program. It really helped me see their characters and the storyline in a different light.
I enjoyed every POV, no matter how much I loved or hated the character. It gave depth to Nothing Out There by providing both character development and inside information that we didn’t originally know. It gave a whole new side to the story without introducing an overwhelming amount of new information.
I honestly haven’t read a companion novella like this before, and I’m thrilled with the way it made the already amazing story that much better.

I was really excited for this one, given how much I loved the first book! Don’t get me wrong, this novella helped give some more insight on a lot of unanswered questions and some “plot holes” I felt the original story had in terms of the guards, the advisors, etc. it made a few more characters feel human and their choices more interesting/understandable. I read it in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed it! The writing is already stronger compared to her debut in ways that read like a fully seasoned author so shout out to her!!! The effort and love in her world is obvious in the page!
However… I almost wish each chapter gave a bit of context to the setting, time, scene at the start like a subheading because it’s been a little bit since I read the original book and it took some brain wracking to remember some of the scenes and details. Because of this, the pacing and flow are absolutely everywhere and disjointed. Also, unfortunately, as awesome as the characters are in the original book, all of the POVs read the same. It made a “revelation “ for Vincent confusing because I had to take a second to realize… oh it was Ashford that knew that, not him… huh. Colt and Vincent and Mr M all read as the same POV… and even the way they view Maysie is practically the same (this is just my personal opinion though).

I want to start off by saying that I am so thankful for the opportunity I was given to ARC read this amazing and dramatic novella!!!🙏
Firstly, oh. em. gee. I fell in love so quickly, this book never left my hands! The pacing was amazing and I stg I was hooked on every single line❤️ For fans of the first book of the series, Nothing Out There, this novella is a MUST READ! For such a short addition to the series it does not lack in new, intriguing content, but it also doesn’t feel crammed or rushed. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll probably cry some more but omg is it worth it. The POVs of the MMCs were so fun to dive into, it was so exciting to see what they were thinking! Loved seeing Colt’s motivations and Vincent reminiscing on his past. The characters were so well developed and it was great to get to know how they saw themselves and how they saw Maysie from their own POVs🙏 Maverick though when I catch u its on sight❤️ Lots of the missing puzzle pieces from the first book were revealed here, and lots of more questions appeared👀

Colt is by far my favorite. His golden retriever energy and protective nature are just so endearing!
Vincent is a solid back up. He is trying his hardest but he had some underlying trauma that he is still trying to get through. His fortitude is quite admirable, though.
Last and certainly least, Maverick. He is a bit demented and has some mild obsession issues, but he does add some extra conflict to the story that I very much enjoyed.
The Plot
The book was short and sweet, just as a novella should be. That said, the plot occurred simultaneously with book one, Nothing to Prove.
I really enjoyed learning what the boys were doing and thinking as Maysie faced her own conflicts. As a novella should be, it held no crucial information to the main plotline but was still a thoroughly enjoyable addition that scratched that itch as I await the next installment.
Overall
This was a very fun read. I highly recommend Nothing Out There and Something to Prove if this seems like something you would be interested in!

Oh my gosh!!
This book was amazing!!!!!
After reading Nothing Out There, I really wanted more from another’s POV and this book did not disappoint.
3 POV’s!!!!
I loved getting to see their side of things.
My favorite was the Guard’s POV, at points I was nervous and others kicking my feet, because it was so sweet!
With the Hound’s POV, oh my gosh, i felt as if I was getting new info every time it popped up, and the ghost of his past!! 👀
And with the Poster boy, wow can anyone get more annoying? Maybe. With this side we got to see what the Poster boy was thinking and that got me wondering, does the board think like that too?
This book gave me all the feels!
I was stressed, even though I knew what was going to happen, I was excited, because they are so cute, and I got even more upset with the one character (you know who you are: Mister M).
I absolutely love this book and I can’t wait to get it in paper back.
I cannot wait for book 2, because with the ending of this book it leaves me with a lot of questions!!! 👀

As a slow reader the short chapters kept me intrigued and made me say “just one more chapter” atleast 100 times. I COULD NOT put this book down.
Getting all three POVs added so much depth to both the characters and the story. Every chapter gave me a new perspective, and I loved seeing how differently each of them experienced the same world. Instead of feeling repetitive, each POV answered questions while also making me even more excited for what’s to come.
Even though it’s a novella, it never felt like “just extra content.” It genuinely expands the story, gives important context, and made me even more invested in the series. The ending left me needing book two immediately.
If you loved Nothing Out There, don’t skip this novella. It’s the perfect companion, and now I’m counting down the days until the next book!!

This YA Dystopia is a companion book with multiple POVs to Nothing Out There. N.O.T. was from the FMC's perspective while S.T.P. is from the MMCs' perspectives.
With the ability to tandem read with N.O.T., this is a really cool addition to this world. So excited to read more in The Ellington Project series! This was such a fun look into the guys and what they were thinking and experiencing outside of what we already knew from N.O.T..

This novella was absolutely dazzling. It truly expanded the world of Nothing Out There and answered so many questions while leaving me with more.
The perspectives of Colt, Maverick, and Vincent were so fascinating and made me so much more connected to their characters. No matter what character you rooted for in NOT you will enjoy learning more about the boys and their motivations. Each character has far more revealed about their backstories and I cannot wait for book 2 to help fill in some of the missing pieces.
I have never been more confused on who an FMC is going to end up with but loved all the new dynamics revealed in this novella. Each character has amazing development and new secrets are revealed on every page.
If you read NOT and had so many questions this book is definitely worth your time.

Honestly I am at an utter loss for words. This novella was everything I expected and more.
Firstly, all three perspectives really felt individual to their characters, like if I wasn’t told who they were at the beginning, I’d still be able to tell whose mind I was peering into. They each had such fabulously different personalities.
Secondly, I had to trudge through this book with blurry eyes. There is so much emotion in the writing that I really felt attached to these characters and sympathised with them throughout my whole journey reading this book.
I am beyond grateful that I have been able to read this wonderful companion novella, and cannot wait for the second book to be released! 🥹

First off, I was super honoured to be on the ARC team for this book! All thoughts and feelings in this review are my own.
I absolutely adore books that show the same events as another but in different POVs so this was right up my alley! I loved seeing how the events from the first book affected the MMC's and how their backstories really tied into book 1. I think this book did its job perfectly in the sense that it answered questions I had about the MMC's while still keeping some aspects open ended where (hopefully!) book 2 will be able to easily continue the story.
For such a short book it had a really big impact that leaves me antsy for the next one!
Side note: currently Vincent is my babygirl and he can do no wrong in my eyes. Team V!

Mae has such a unique way of creating diverse characters. Whether you love them or hate them you will never feel indifferent to anyone in the story. It keeps you wanting more just to have a little glimpse into their inner monologue and secrets unseen and this novella scratches that itch perfectly.
In NOT, you get to focus on Maysie and the girls as they are, girls. In STP, the vision shifts through the trio POV. “Subjects” and “broken toys”. Guards you’re rooting for and men in power to inspire your own feminine rage. The Ellington Series feels so much more than a YA series, it’s haunting and you can’t help but be entranced. This was such an easy 5/5 from the first chapter! BOOK 2 NOW PLEASE!! 🩷🫶

After finishing Nothing Out There, I was left with so many questions. Something to Prove answered quite a few of them and added more depth to the story, but I’m still desperate for more because I still don’t know who I can trust.

I was so so lucky to be on the ARC team for Something to Prove!! I absolutely adored Nothing Out There and was so excited for Mae Hardcourts first novella!! The only issue I had with Nothing Out There was that it wasn’t multi POVs. I love that the author listened to her fans and came up with a solution!! I love the intrigue surrounding this series as I feel no reader could describe it as predictable. Something to Prove and Nothing Out There were both beautifully written, descriptive, but also plot driven. I would highly recommend both these books to young adult readers. So excited to see wha this incredible author does next!!

Thank you so so so much Mae Harcourt for letting me read this as an ARC. For me, this book was the perfect addition to Nothing Out There. Having all of the boys pov’s for certain scenes made my reading experience so much better the second time. Maverick confuses me and annoys me all at once because how can ONE person be so annoying? I don’t hate him and I believe he could have a redemption arc, but his behavior in NOT and STP was just annoying. STP made me love Vincent and Colt a lot more, even though I haven’t picked a team yet. Honestly, both of them need hugs. The cliffhanger at the end makes me even more excited for the next book, and overall, a great read.

Nothing out there, through that book I saw the view through Maysie and after coming to this book and seeing the different number of POV's and different views each person had really made it more interesting and the suspense created was on point.
Each episode made it impossible to drop the book down, staying up till 3 in the morning to complete the book with dark circles but it was definitely worth it.
That "ONE" episode really made me love the one particular too much and now I'm unable to move on from him and I'm eagerly waiting for the next book. ❣️

This book was a true masterpiece, there was so much emotion from all of the boys and made me like two of them three much more - Ashford you don’t get any good karma, you know what you did.
All jokes aside such a good book and can’t wait to see how much more we get of the relationships in book 2 and onwards, definitely would recommend checking out if you have ever enjoyed any 2010 dystopian, special those of powers or labs and experimental procedures!

Thank you Mae Harcourt for this ARC copy! I enjoyed hearing from Vincent, Maverick, and Colt (especially Colt!!). They are so well-written and reading their stories adds so much depth to the series. Chapter 13 ripped my heart out a little, in the best way 🥹. It would have been helpful to have a timeline for this novella, especially since it’s been a while since I read the first book. Can’t wait for the next one!
