I enjoyed this even more than book number 1! Great character development, loved the action throughout the story with just enough of the cliches we know and love ❤️

Somehow Lucy has written a sequel better than the original!
‘Lady of Light and Death’ is book 2 in Lucy’s Courts of Daemonium series and it’s darker and grittier than the first. Following directly on from the events of ‘Lord of Shadow and Blood’, it details the war between daemons and the bigoted human leader Rook. With similarities to marginalised groups today, the daemons take his Liberators on with heart and determination, fighting for their right to live. Expect bloodshed, angst, morally grey characters, and a little bit of spice.
Beautifully written with a compelling plot and honestly superb character development. I devoured this in 2 days and I’m so looking forward to the final book! Bravo Lucy.

Seamless !!!
Retuning to the courts of daemonium was like coming home to your family with all its familiar comforts and choas.
Easy 5*, book 2 did not let me down at all. Someone needs to give Cass a medal because that girl is one SERIOUS BADASS !!!!

This sequel picks up right in the aftermath of book 1’s trauma and it doesn’t shy away from it. Every character is carrying the weight of what happened and you watch them process it in such raw realistic ways. No quick fixes here — just grief, anger and healing done on their own terms.
And while they’re dealing with that war is on the verge of breaking out. Daemons, others and humans are all colliding with a power from Lilith creeping in at the edges. The way it touches on marginalism is so expertly done. It’s there, it matters but it never feels forced. It just makes the world feel bigger and more real.
The plot is nonstop twists and turns. Just when you think you know where it’s going, it pulls the rug out. I loved Lord of Shadow and Blood, but this one straight up stole my heart.
And then THAT ending cliffhanger. I am not okay. I need more.
If you want dark fantasy with emotional depth, war stakes, and characters that feel painfully human, read this duology.

After meeting Lucy at a Romantasy book convention, I picked up her debut novel and enjoyed it so much that I jumped at the opportunity to read her latest release.
This book is perfect for readers who love dark fantasy filled with tension, intrigue, and spice. Lucy's writing creates a richly atmospheric world, bringing every scene vividly to life. The female main character undergoes incredible development throughout the story, and her emotional journey feels authentic and compelling from beginning to end.
In my opinion, this sequel surpasses the first book, delivering higher stakes, deeper character growth, and an even more immersive reading experience.

I came across the Courts of Daemonium after seeing Lucy at an event in Manchester earlier this year and I'm so glad I did!

Described as a dark fantasy romance, the Courts of Daemonium series centres on the complex relationship between Alexander Duran and Adriana Clarke. Xander is a powerful Lamia (a vampire like creature) created by the dark witch Lilith to do her bidding, and though he has rebelled against her control she still has the power to take over his mind and make him perform terrible acts. Adriana was the last Luciferus Incantrix, a light-wielding witch, and following the traumatic events of book one, Lord of Shadow and Blood, has become the first Lamia Incantrix.
I loved the characters and twisty plot in book one and these are continued here in book two. Lady of Light and Death picks up where book one finished, and we see more of the unfolding political situation as the Courts prepare for war against the Liberators, who don't believe Daemons have the right to live amongst mortals. Adriana begins to fully embraces her power and comes to terms with her destiny as well as the trauma of her past, whilst Xander is battling against his own darkness and slipping further out of control as Lilith delves deeper into his memories and manipulates his mind. At the heart of the story is still the dark bond between Xander and Adriana, who continue to be complex, flawed and intriguing leads. It was great to get to know more about some of the side characters as well.
This is a dark fantasy with a high stakes plot, morally grey characters and detailed supernatural lore. The world building is totally convincing and the writing is full of vivid descriptions that bring the setting and characters to life. Looking forward to seeing what comes next! 💜✨

Infinite stars. No notes. Lots of emotional damage.
This is the kind of book that you're going to keep thinking about well after you've read it. Lucy did an absolutely incredible job showing Xander’s continuing struggle to admit he's not always okay, his strength to keep going and lead, and his never ending love for Adriana, who was finally stepping into her own and taking her seat on the Incantrix Court. After decades, she finally finds her place in the world, helping the daemons gain support to win their war.
I cried multiple times during this book but I also had a few laughs. The balance between everything was perfect. The story was rich with lore, magic, and intrigue. At some points, you may be scared to continue but you'll be dying to know what happens next.
Lord of Shadow and Blood was good but this? This was EVEN BETTER!! It dives so much deeper in the characters' stories, their pain, and their resilience to keep fighting despite waiting for a war they're not sure they'll win. Adriana’s under a lot of pressure as their key weapon and Xander is struggling to keep his hold on reality but together, they're stronger. More powerful.
Now, this may not be a very romance heavy book but the romance we do get is beautiful and so raw and real, and maybe a little twisted. Neither Adriana or Xander has stopped loving the other but they need to learn to navigate their new reality after all these years, face their demons and accept what's done is done. You'll be desperate for them to have their happy ending.
This is no doubt one of the best books I have ever read. Lucy's ability to draw you into the world, create realistic relationships, and make you feel their pain is just incredible. She grabs you and doesn't let go, emotionally speaking. Just when you think everything is okay… You'll see. You may cry, you may scream, but you're going to love it.

Lady of Light and Death was such an amazing sequel. If you loved book one, this is just more, more, more. More action, more politics, more romance, more bloodshed, more emotional devastation, and somehow even higher stakes.
I’m honestly obsessed with Xander and Adriana. They’re both so broken and traumatised, and their relationship is messy, tense, romantic, frustrating, and beautiful all at once. There’s yearning, love, doubt, spice, and so many moments where I just wanted them both to be happy.
The world gets bigger in this one too. We see more of the courts, the resistance, and the connections between all the characters, which made me even more invested in what happens next. Everything feels deeper, richer, and more established. It’s definitely darker than the first book. There are some genuinely shocking moments, plenty of morally grey choices, and Lilith continues to be such a fascinating, twisted presence throughout the story.
I also loved how much the found family element grows. Even with all the chaos, violence, and heartbreak, there’s still so much love running through this series.

This picks up straight up from book 1 and I was pulled straight back into the immersive world where being different is dangerous and there is so much unpredictability and political unrest. Xander and Adriana’s relationship is complicated but packed with more tension, deep longing, and emotional intensity that hits deeply. Their connection feels layered and complicated but you can feel the longing and love they have for each other given the events that led them to where they are present day.
There is a strong sense of light and shadow woven through the narrative. There are moments of heartbreak balanced by understanding and vulnerability. The atmosphere is haunting and it makes it impossible to step away once you’re in it.
The plot is full of twists that genuinely catch you off guard and had me flipping the pages. The stakes were high and the tension constantly flowing. The romance was utterly consuming. It was nice to see unexpected relationships develop and see everyone come together. There are moments that feel almost overwhelming in the best way, where you’re just fully locked into their story. It’s also nice to engage in more of the lore as the story goes on.

Wow, what a second book. It continues everything from the first, the darkness, the complexities of Adriana and Xander’s relationship, the brilliant world building and of course, the twists and turns. I always think the sign of a good book is one that can make you feel many things, and this book will make you smile but also break your heart. You can tell how much thought and time has gone into writing this, again if I didn’t already know this was Lucy’s first series I would be shocked! I’m looking forward to continuing the story in the next book, I have a feeling we’re in for some more trauma…

This is for dark fantasy lovers, it is plot heavy that will immerse you right alongside the characters difficult and emotional journeys.
Lucy really knows how to make your jaw hit the floor and squeeze your heart in a vice with her writing.

There were several times I simply just wanted to go back to book one, for v specific reasons 😭
anyway, I’m not ready for my soul to be crushed by the third book 😭

That was EPIC!! Book 1 is amazing, and this was even better. The Courts of Daemonium story continues in this thrilling sequel that I found nearly impossible to put down. When I wasn’t reading it, I was desperate to know what happened next. I cried, I exclaimed out loud, I’m hooked on these characters and cannot wait for more already. Lucy has an enthralling writing style that feels practically filmic, as though you are there in the moment as things unfold. Truly this is fantastic and I highly recommend giving it a read. :)

“Lady of Light and Death” is the sequel to “Lord of Shadow and Blood” by Lucy May Smith, the first book packed an intense punch of magical gothic fantasy, love, betrayal and second chances. This second novel certainly did not hold back!
Whatever intensity level book 1 had, book 2 has tripled it! I had intense moments of love, heart break, betrayal, grief and shock after shock that kept me on the edge of my seat 🪑
If you haven’t read any of Lucy’s books, I strongly suggest you get onto “Lord of Shadow and Blood” and follow with “Tales of Daemonium” which not only provided a well earned break from the first novel, but also some very useful background information for book 2.

okay.
its just alot to process and something im in the mood to vent and pick apart a book and other times i think... will the author cry if i write this. but LUCY WTF.
i waited SO LONG for book two only to be hit with minimal spicy which i actually knew was gonna be the case and an epic angsty dark story instead im sick of them both being all woe is me im the victim just get over it and smash nasties already PLS
in all seriousness though the character development in this one is amazing, to see her embrace the dark is just what i needed. im becoming more and more obsessed with cas because who does need a bestie to put you in your place (her story please we love a side quest) anyways i dont want to give spoilers but i will say her and cas smashing life and bringing the incantrix back together, shaping a coven and having a seat at the table makes my heart happy.
you can see the diffrences in writing from book one to book two and how the story has grown and shaped with the experiences from book one and i love that. gold star <3

As an editor of horror, fantasy, and romance, I’ve become relatively desensitised to book trauma and, especially when working (as I did on this), I often absorb a book through analytical eyes as opposed to letting the story wash over me.
With all that in mind, “Lady of Light and Death” brought me to literal tears. If you’ve read its predecessor, “Lord of Shadow and Blood” (“LOSAB”), you know that Lucy Smith pulls no punches and isn’t afraid to go to some dark places. This goes beyond anything in “LOSAB”. It’s not exploitative, it’s not overly grisly or cruel for the sake of being cruel or shock value – everything in it is calculated, authentic to the characters and plot, and done to maximising the reader’s emotional response. It will devastate you – in the BEST way.
The book continues the story pretty much straight after the end of the last one and, as foreshadowed, it is filled with political themes that hit very close to home, the fall out and trauma experienced by our main characters (MC) after the events of “LOSAB”, and epic supernatural battles – along with further foreshadowing of sinister unravellings creeping in the shadowy peripherals.
I didn’t think it possible but this book manages to surpass Book One (I’ve also reviewed that if you’d like my thoughts). The story is richer, the characters are now firmly established and we explore them and their psychologies in more detail, the stakes are even higher, and the world building expands with new lore being introduced, as well new characters – including a particularly fun and intriguing deity that the ARC team are in love with 😏
Whilst “Lady of Light and Death” is hugely plot-centric and filled with allegory and developed themes, Smith doesn’t forget to ground it with her characters and the battles they face outside of the war. These characters continue their emotional and mental health journeys in authentic and fully realised ways that make you ache when you read them. They are so infuriating at times but despite being hundreds of years old and supernatural creatures, they are unapologetically human. They are flawed and misguided and hopeless but you can’t help but love them in spite of it - or perhaps, because of it. In a single page, Smith makes you go from wanting to shake them, to wanting to hold them… and sometimes, wanting to *ahem* love them 🥵 Her ability to evoke such strong responses from her readers is Smith’s super power and you can’t help but cherish each moment of heartache, joy, and tension – or, occasionally, all of the above in a single moment.
I could honestly rave about this book (and the “Courts of Daemonium” series as a whole) all day – and do. But I’ll leave it here and just say, don’t sleep on it. Don’t let it fester with a million others on your TBR. If you haven’t read “LOSAB”, it’s imperative you do. If you can, download “Tales of Daemonium” on KU, and then read that one, also. Then read this. It’s worth it. These characters are worth it. This world is worth it. The writing is worth it. I cannot tell you how original, captivating, and spellbinding these books are.

As an ARC reader, Lady of Light and Death completely pulled me into its dark, high-stakes world from the very first chapter. Lucy May Smith delivers a gripping blend of fantasy, political conflict, supernatural tension, and emotional depth that kept me turning the pages late into the night.
The world-building is one of the strongest aspects of this book. The divide between Daemons, mortals, and the growing Resistance feels layered and believable, with a rich history woven naturally into the story. The atmosphere is intense and immersive, balancing moments of action with emotional character-driven scenes that give the story real weight.
The cast was another highlight for me. The characters feel distinct, complex, and emotionally grounded, especially as they navigate loyalty, grief, fear, and sacrifice in the middle of chaos. Xander immediately stood out as a compelling lead, and the relationships throughout the book added so much heart to the darker elements of the plot.
I also loved the pacing. There’s a constant sense of danger and momentum, but the quieter moments never felt wasted. The story really kept me on edge! The political undertones and themes of resistance, power, and survival added depth without overshadowing the fantasy elements.

One of the things I enjoy most about this series is the darker atmosphere and the sense that the stakes are always high. With daemons, magic, and powerful forces at play, there is a constant feeling that anything can happen.
Adrianna and Xander’s story leaves me struggling to put the book down! As their dynamic continued to evolve I found myself invested in both their relationship and their individual journeys. I also really loved spending more time with the side characters, they add so much personality to the story and depth to the story.

Lady of Light and Death is a dark, immersive, and emotionally loaded sequel that takes everything from Lord of Shadow and Blood and pushes it further. The stakes are much higher and the characters feel more raw and more in danger than ever before with political tension, trauma and conflict that has you consumed and fully locked into the story.
I absolutely love Lucy's writing as she creates such a gothic, intense and beautifully cinematic world. The action scenes are vivid, the quieter moments are meaningful, and the twists are brutal in the best way. The one thing I love about the Courts of Daemonium is the lore and Lucy knows how to feed us with this.
Xander and Adriana absolutely shine here. They’re messy, stubborn, traumatised, and so deeply compelling. Their relationship is full of yearning, frustration, tenderness, and hurt! The kind of dynamic that makes you want to reach into their world, shake them and hug them in the same breath.

Having read Lord of Shadow and Blood fairly recently, I was equal parts excited and terrified for what layers of trauma Lady of Light and Death was going to bring, and let's just say it did not disappoint.
While I found this book slower to pick up, I feel the pace is right for what the characters have endured before, and it gives us time to almost 'sit with our feelings' in the aftermath of Lord of Shadow and Blood.
The themes in this book relate closely to what we are seeing in the world at the moment, but it does so in a way that keeps you within the story. You scream at the characters, you cheer for the character. You cry for characters. It is a real rollercoaster of emotions that only Lucy knows how to take you on.
I really enjoyed the character development in this book, albeit it did annoy me that Adri was too forgiving in my eyes, there's grovelling, but, girl, you should have made him grovel more, is all I'm sayin :p
I enjoyed this book a lot, and I’m really looking forward to the final book - and don't forget, support indie!

Lady of Light and Death was a really enjoyable sequel, and I found myself even more invested in the world and the characters.
The beginning felt a little slow to me, and at times I found the back-and-forth between the main characters a bit frustrating. Even so, it never took away from my overall enjoyment of the story.
One of my favourite aspects of this book was its portrayal of mental health, particularly from a male perspective. It’s something that isn’t explored nearly enough in fantasy, and I thought it was handled with care and authenticity.
Compared to the first book, this sequel really steps up the action. There are more fight scenes, the magic plays a much bigger role, and I loved seeing the world and its magic system explored further.
Overall, this was a strong second instalment that expanded the series in all the right ways. I’m excited to see where Lucy May Smith takes these characters next.

Where do I even start? 😭 I loved Lord of Shadow and Blood and I was counting down the days to get my hands on Lady of Light and Death. I loved the final chapter and it’s got me excited for book three 😂
I KNEW this was going to be filled with Adriana’s rise into power but nothing prepared me for how delicious it would feel when she got there.
I loved that this was a smooth continuation from book one without loads of time passing or skips. The settings are all consistent and so vivid in my mind. We also love a flawed MMC and I enjoyed Xander’s internal journey with himself but it really felt like this book was more about Adriana herself and I enjoyed that a lot.
Ps. Lucy writes dark fantasy and no one is safe. She also has a habit of breaking your heart and then putting it back together again (sort of). You have been warned!! 😭😂

First off. If you haven’t read Lord of Shadow and Blood, do yourself a favor and do so immediately. Secondly, THE SEQUEL Lady of Light and Death IS AMAZING. It’s plot heavy and full of angst, epic battles, character development, love, loss, sarcasm, banter & Xander’s witty mouth of course. (He’s one of my fav shadow zaddies). I loved this story beginning to end and the way Lucy has built this world and all of its history is nothing short of amazing. I’m fully able to immerse myself into the story & it has been such a ride with of these characters. (The rides not over yet either)

Where do I even start, I had been desperate to get my eyes on my ARC copy of Lady of Light and Death aka LoLaD, from the minute I read the last few words of Lord of Shodow and Blood aka LoSaB!!
Lucy smashed it with book 2, the love and losses. The pain and joy. The smiles and tears! Ugh my heart and head, the plot was epic. Fighting for whats right. The battles epic! You always want happy but the chaos and darkness is what keeps you turning the pages at lightning speed. The yearning, the forgivness the betrayals its all in here giving such a beautiful balance. Looking forward to release day so it can join book 1 on my shelf 🖤 another wait for the next book if only patience was one of my virtues!

This book is so beautiful well done. You can clearly tell how deep her love for each character is by the depth of their emotions and own back stories with in these pages. I can not express enough how much I enjoyed the world building and learning the different layers between the Daemons, mortals, and the resistance.
It is rare I enjoy a sequel more than the first book in a series but this was like coming home. The character development, the world building, the magic. Everything felt so real and raw.

This book had so much detail going into it. The politics, the found family, the love, the character growth…everything was impeccable.
I really enjoyed this book, but for different reasons to book 1. The contrast between the books is different but so complimentary of the story and decade. The plot is strong as well as the structure. The story is unique and makes you come away needing a breather. I loved the main character growth in both the MMC and FMC, I think their story of inner healing is something everyone can relate to. I really think I will be thinking of the story continuously, and I cannot wait for the final book!
