Franck Thilliez is a French author who's written several novels about the detectives in this book. However, this is the first one to be translated into English. Luckily, it can easily be read as a standalone.
The story: Belgian movie buff Ludovic Sénéchal goes blind after watching a short film he bought from the estate of a dead film collector in Lille, Belgium. Unable to see, Ludovic pokes his speed dial and happens to call a woman he used to date, Detective Lucie Henebelle.
Henebelle sends an ambulance for Ludovic, then collects the movie clip and watches it. The film has some disturbing scenes - like a woman's eyeball being cut open and a child slitting a bull's throat - but this doesn't explain Ludovic's condition.
Henebelle then takes the reel to a movie expert to be analyzed, frame by frame. Turns out the film has subliminal frames spliced into it.....shots that are bizarre, violent, and shocking. Meanwhile, someone is desperate to get the short film, and is willing to torture and murder to obtain it.
In a parallel story line, five mutilated bodies are dug out of a pit in a French town. The corpses are missing their eyes and hands, and the tops of their skulls have been sawn off.
Chief Inspector Franck Sharko of the 'Paris Violent Crimes Unit' is put in charge of the case, but he's a troubled man. Sharko lost his wife and daughter in tragic circumstances five years ago, and now has schizophrenia - which manifests as hallucinations of a young girl named Eugenie.
Eugenie 'accompanies' Sharko wherever he goes, freely expressing her opinions. For instance, she doesn't like dead bodies. (Rough for a homicide detective!) Eugenie also loves cocktail sauce and candied chestnuts, and Sharko has to purchase these items every day (though I'm not quite clear on who eats them. LOL).
Before long a connection surfaces between the freaky film clip and the the five mutilated bodies in France, and Detective Henebelle and Chief Inspector Sharko start to work together.
Sharko learns that the bodies of three girls - missing the tops of their skulls - were found in Egypt 15 years ago. Thinking this could be connected to his current case, Sharko travels to Egypt. However the Egyptian authorities aren't very helpful, and Sharko is put into grave danger. The Inspector does manage to discover, however, that the girls' death has something to do with 'Syndrome E.'
For her part, Henebelle learns that clues to the investigation might be found in Montreal, Canada. So off she goes. In Canada, Henebelle garners important information about a dastardly secret program, conducted after World War II, to control people's brains and induce violent behavior. The worst thing about this project is that institutionalized little girls were used as guinea pigs. Henebelle's life is also put in danger, and it's clear that some evil cabal DOESN'T WANT THIS CASE PURSUED.
The Canadian trip takes a toll on Henebelle, who's a driven detective as well as the single mother of two young girls: one at vacation camp and the other one sick in the hospital. The ailing youngster is being looked after by Grandma, who's a rather fun and entertaining character.....kind of a bright spot in this grim story.
Eventually, Sharko and Henebelle discover exactly what happened in the past and present, who's involved, what Syndrome E is, and how all this is connected to insidious movies with 'hidden messages.' This is intriguing, but it gets overly convoluted and - to some extent - doesn't quite make sense.
SPOILER ALERT
For romance fans, there are sparks between Hennebelle and Sharko. And for worried readers, Ludovic has hysterical blindness - which can get better.
All in all I enjoyed the story, which is well-written, kept my attention, and has an interesting premise about subliminal messages. (In case you're interested, the Colombo episode entitled 'Double Exposure' is also about subliminal messages.) I would probably read another book by this author.
I'd recommend this thriller to fans of the genre.

Quyển hấp dẫn nhất cũng đáng sợ nhất mình đọc gần đây. Đọc tới đâu "ồ!" "á!" tới đó
Vụ án ghê tởm và phức tạp và ở tầm vĩ mô, tác giả phải miêu tả chi li những lý thuyết khoa học, thần kinh học, điện ảnh,... thì nhân vật cũng như người đọc mới hiểu dc mức độ nghiêm trọng của vụ án và đẳng cấp của tên giết người.
Đọc mấy chỗ đó thích lắm luôn 👍 Mình rất trân trọng những tác phẩm dc làm tới nơi tới chốn như thế này, cho thấy tham vọng của nhà văn. Làm mình tò mò phải lên search thử mấy cái lý thuyết, sự kiện trong này có thật ko :v

Primera novela que leo de Thillez y no será la última, tenía muchas ganas de leer a este autor y ha merecido mucho la pena, uno de los autores más destacados de la literatura francesa.
Tras visualizar unas bobinas de cine antiguas Ludovic, pierde la vista de repente, además, también es un exnovio de nuestra inspectora protagonista Lucie, que comenzará a investigar este caso tan extraño.

De forma paralela, nuestro inspector Franck Sharko, investiga la aparición de cinco cuerpos mutilados y evidentemente los dos casos empezarán a solaparse, de forma que nuestros protagonistas empezarán a trabajar juntos.

Un thriller brillante, con unos personajes que son magníficos, profundiza en ambos de una forma esplendida, de una forma en la que ambos te gustaran, con una gran humanidad y con heridas que sanar por sus pasados, algo que los unirá aún más.

La trama es compleja, diferente a lo que estamos acostumbrados en los thriller, compleja pero muy bien contada, de tal manera que no se pierde el ritmo, con giros constantes y algo que siempre llama la atención, es que el autor enlaza la historia con hechos reales (brutal).

Del final... bueno... me dejo alucinada, no me lo esperaba para nada, y ademas queda todo super bien cerrado, quedando como una novela autoconclusiva si no se quiere seguir leyendo mas.

Me ha parecido buenísimo. Me ha tenido en vilo, me ha descolocado, y como viene sucediendo hasta ahora, el camino es tan interesante como su resolución, si no más. Algún detalle curioso, como afirmar que aunque tú creas que te gusta la Coca-Cola, te engañas y lo que de verdad te gusta es la Pepsi😳 y cito:
"El escáner nos mostró que una zona del cerebro, llamada putamen, reacciona más con la Pepsi que con la Coca-Cola. El putamen es la zona donde radican los placeres inmediatos instintivos.
- Así pues, la campaña de publicidad de la Coca-Cola hace que la gente crea preferirla mientras que, en el fondo, su organismo prefiere Pepsi.
- Exactamente".

Hay más comentarios pro Pepsi a lo largo de la novela, pero ninguno que me pareciera tan llamativo. En los libros anteriores esto no sucedía. Quitando estas peculiares cuñas publicitarias, la novela es intensa, original y altamente disfrutable. Con un final... ¡Madre mía!. Deseando leer la siguiente. Escuela de psicópatas

"Era monstruoso...se había convertido en un pedazo de carne fría, sin sentimientos, sin resentimiento. El modelo más puro y más elaborado del científico empecinado."
Después de la muerte de un cinefilo francés, el hijo de este empieza a vender la coleccion de su padre, asi es cómo Ludovic adquiere algunas que son muy antiguas, de los años 50, sin nombre o identificación. Al llegar a su casa este reproduce una de estas, tras verla queda completamente ciego, toma el celular y marca cualquier numero de su lista de contactos y justo da con el de su ex, una policia, Lucie, ella se encuentra justo en el hospital ya que una de sus hijas esta ahi.
Por lo extraño de todo ella decide ver la pelicula, al hacerlo se da cuenta de lo perturbadora y extraña que es lo que ha visto, queda completamente impactada por lo inusual del video, en el cual hay ciertos personajes que no cuadran e incluso muestran como a una mujer le sacan un ojo. Motivo por el cual decide investigar lo que hay detras de esta cinta y de lo que en ella contiene.
Por otro lado, tenemos al comisario Sharko quién sera el encargado de investigar y llevar el caso de 5 cadaveres mutilados.
Ambos casos en diferentes lugares, pero que se verán entrelazados llevando a los personajes a ir descubriendo qué está detrás de todo esto, y el porqué tantas muertes, quienes son los involucrados, que es lo que tiene la película que ha dejado ciego a alguién.
Una novela negra adictiva y maratónica, de esas que no pude soltar hasta terminarla. Me ha fascinado el nivel de explicación, los temas científicos y cómo los aborda, no hay respiro en la historia, los personajes te llevan de un lugar a otro, de un pista a otra.
Una trama que habla sobre la manipulación mental, los mensajes que se reciben, de qué forman lo hacen y cómo pueden incidir en las personas, por ahi va la trama, pero lo que se detalla, cómo se detalla, el proceso de investigación que llevan y la idea perturbadora de la influencia es algo que ganó mi atención desde la primera página y sobre todo lo brutal de lo que ahí nos cuentan.

Muy bueno. Buenas dosis de investigación policial, buena ambientación cuando se sale de Francia, y correcta resolución, nada espectacular pero está bien.

Một bộ phim ngắn bí ẩn khiến người xem đột ngột bị mù. Năm xác chết chôn sâu dưới lòng đất được phát hiện, bị móc mất và não. Hai sự kiện diễn ra tại hai đất nước khác nhau, nhưng hóa ra lại liên quan mật thiết và kết nối hai vị cảnh sát điều tra - Lucie Hennebelle và Franck Sharko - trong một chuyến hành trình đầy những hiểm nguy và phát hiện kinh hoàng, đi đến tận cùng của cái ác.
“Hội Chứng E” cuốn hút mình ngay từ những chương đầu tiên, với việc một cuộn băng quay những cảnh tượng ghê rợn, dị hợm có thể khiến một trong những người xem nó bị mù tạm thời. Cuốn tiểu thuyết được xây dựng theo mô típ thường thấy của một tác phẩm trinh thám điển hình, với việc phát hiện ra xác chết và sự xuất hiện của một sự kiện dị thường, rồi từ đó người đọc được dẫn dụ vào một mê cung đầy hồi hộp và ghê gớm của những ngã rẽ bất ngờ: giết người bịt đầu mối, Sharko đến Ai Cập để điều tra những cái chết tương tự, không đoán được những hiểm nguy và sự phản bội nào đang chờ đợi mình. Điều làm “Hội Chứng E” trở nên khác biệt và hấp dẫn hơn, có lẽ chính là việc yếu tố điện ảnh và những định nghĩa liên quan đến nó được khai thác khá nhiều để tạo nên phần kiến thức nền cho tác phẩm, cộng với các thông tin liên quan đến khả năng tiếp nhận hình ảnh của não bộ cũng như thế giới tâm lý đầy phức tạp của con người.
Mình cũng đánh giá cao tính điều tra, suy luận, phá án của “Hội Chứng E”, khi tác giả đã tạo nên được một hệ thống các tình tiết được liên kết với nhau khá ổn, đặc biệt là những khúc quanh, cú twist mình ít ngờ tới (và chắc hẳn là các nhân vật của chúng ta cũng rất bất ngờ, nhiều chi tiết đe dọa tính mạng của họ ghê luôn á). Đặc biệt, câu chuyện có thêm chiều sâu khi tác giả - theo truyền thống nhân vật thám tử điều tra chính nào giờ - đã xây dựng nên một Franck Sharko với rất nhiều bi kịch cuộc sống, khi vợ con của anh đã qua đời vì tai nạn giao thông, còn anh thì phải đối mặt với chứng tâm thần phân liệt, khiến anh luôn nhìn thấy và nói chuyện với một cô bé tên là Eugénie. Lẽ dĩ nhiên, một nam điều tra viên đi cùng với một nữ điều tra viên thì kiểu gì yếu tố lãng mạn cũng tới, và chuyện tình nảy nở giữa quá trình điều tra đầy hiểm nguy của Sharko và Lucie đã thêm một ít gia vị hấp dẫn cho câu chuyện.
Nhiều người đánh giá rằng càng về sau, “Hội Chứng E” càng trở nên nhạt nhòa và gây chưng hửng, đặc biệt là ở phần phá án và tìm ra chân tướng kẻ giết người. Tuy nhiên, mình lại thấy chân tướng kẻ giết người này cũng có phần bất ngờ và mang chút phong vị plot twist ấy chứ. Có ai ngờ nhân vật mà mình luôn nghĩ là nạn nhân hóa ra lại cũng có thể trở thành kẻ tiếp tay cho cái ác. Và cụm từ “hội chứng E” (syndrome E) thiệt ra là đã có định nghĩa trong y văn các bạn nhé (chứ không phải là một cụm từ xa lạ đối với các nhân vật trong truyện ^^). Về Đoạn kết của tác phẩm, đây đúng là phần khiến trải nghiệm đọc cuốn này của nhiều người trở nên kém vui đi khá nhiều. Nghĩ sao mọi thứ đã yên ổn rồi, tự dưng cái tác giả lại viết nên một cái kết như thế… Có lẽ vì bác ấy muốn thử thách mối quan hệ của Sharko và Lucie trong tập tiếp theo của series hay sao? Mà làm như thế thì ác với cả hai nhân vật quá, vì họ đều đã trải qua quá nhiều đau thương trong cuộc sống rồi, tình yêu giữa họ vừa mới nảy nở thế kia mà giờ lại xảy ra bi kịch này… Đoạn kết làm mình phải lật đật kiếm bản tiếng Anh của cuốn “Bred to Kill” - tập tiếp theo của series về điều tra viên Franck Sharko và Lucie Hennebelle - để đọc. Phần Mở đầu của “Bred to Kill” đúng là làm mình đau tim thiệt luôn, sau khi cảnh sát phát hiện ra xác của một cô bé cỡ tuổi hai đứa con gái sinh đôi bị bắt cóc trên bãi biển của Lucie, mà cái xác bị phân hủy dữ rồi, không nhận diện qua khuôn mặt được, nên Lucie phải nộp DNA của mình để thử với DNA trên cái xác xem đó có phải là xác của một trong hai đứa con của cô hay không. Kết quả thì, hic hic, buồn lắm, cái xác đó đúng là con của Lucie, mà mình sẽ không nói là bé Clara hay Juliette đâu… Nói chung cô Lucie qua phần sau là mất một đứa con rồi, buồn quá trời buồn, tội quá trời tội… Cũng vì thế mà mối quan hệ của Lucie và Sharko cũng coi như đi tong. Vụ án trong “Bred to Kill” sẽ một lần nữa kết hợp hai người lại, nhưng không biết lúc này mối quan hệ của họ sẽ như thế nào… Mình chỉ mới đọc đoạn đầu để biết xem hai bé Clara và Juliette có bị gì không thôi, sau khi biết được một trong hai bé đã bị giết hại thì hiện tại mình cũng không có hứng thú đọc tiếp nữa… Nhưng dù sao cũng hy vọng Nhã Nam sẽ tiếp tục với series này...

Có ai ngờ nhân vật mà mình luôn nghĩ là nạn nhân hóa ra lại cũng có thể trở thành kẻ tiếp tay cho cái ác. Và cụm từ “hội chứng E” (syndrome E) thiệt ra là đã có định nghĩa trong y văn các bạn nhé (chứ không phải là một cụm từ xa lạ đối với các nhân vật trong truyện ^^). Về Đoạn kết của tác phẩm, đây đúng là phần khiến trải nghiệm đọc cuốn này của nhiều người trở nên kém vui đi khá nhiều. Nghĩ sao mọi thứ đã yên ổn rồi, tự dưng cái tác giả lại viết nên một cái kết như thế… Có lẽ vì bác ấy muốn thử thách mối quan hệ của Sharko và Lucie trong tập tiếp theo của series hay sao? Mà làm như thế thì ác với cả hai nhân vật quá, vì họ đều đã trải qua quá nhiều đau thương trong cuộc sống rồi, tình yêu giữa họ vừa mới nảy nở thế kia mà giờ lại xảy ra bi kịch này… Đoạn kết làm mình phải lật đật kiếm bản tiếng Anh của cuốn “Bred to Kill” - tập tiếp theo của series về điều tra viên Franck Sharko và Lucie Hennebelle - để đọc. Phần Mở đầu của “Bred to Kill” đúng là làm mình đau tim thiệt luôn, sau khi cảnh sát phát hiện ra xác của một cô bé cỡ tuổi hai đứa con gái sinh đôi bị bắt cóc trên bãi biển của Lucie, mà cái xác bị phân hủy dữ rồi, không nhận diện qua khuôn mặt được, nên Lucie phải nộp DNA của mình để thử với DNA trên cái xác xem đó có phải là xác của một trong hai đứa con của cô hay không. Kết quả thì, hic hic, buồn lắm, cái xác đó đúng là con của Lucie, mà mình sẽ không nói là bé Clara hay Juliette đâu… Nói chung cô Lucie qua phần sau là mất một đứa con rồi, buồn quá trời buồn, tội quá trời tội… Cũng vì thế mà mối quan hệ của Lucie và Sharko cũng coi như đi tong. Vụ án trong “Bred to Kill” sẽ một lần nữa kết hợp hai người lại, nhưng không biết lúc này mối quan hệ của họ sẽ như thế nào… Mình chỉ mới đọc đoạn đầu để biết xem hai bé Clara và Juliette có bị gì không thôi, sau khi biết được một trong hai bé đã bị giết hại thì hiện tại mình cũng không có hứng thú đọc tiếp nữa… Nhưng dù sao cũng hy vọng Nhã Nam sẽ tiếp tục với series này...

Cảm giác khi đọc xong Hội Chứng E như kiểu khai phá ra cả một miền tri thức kỳ vĩ mới luôn á trời.
Franck Thilliez là một nhà văn trinh thám người Pháp, cuốn Hội Chứng E là phần thứ ba trong nguyên series sách được lấy luôn tên nhân vật chính - Franck Sharko - làm tựa đề. Nói là series nhưng may mắn là cuốn này có thể đọc riêng lẻ được nên khỏi lo lắng vì không hiểu gì hết nhen. Quay trở lại nội dung chính của Hội Chứng E, tác phẩm mở đầu với việc hé lộ với khán giả một bộ phim kỳ quái, bí ẩn và độc hại có khả năng làm người xem đột ngột bị mù. Bộ phim này chính là nguyên nhân phá hỏng kỳ nghỉ của trung úy cảnh sát Lucie, buộc cô phải dấn thân vào điều tra gốc rễ của những thước quay gây ám ảnh đó. Cùng lúc ấy, năm xác chết bị cắt xẻ tàn bạo được tìm thấy trong tình trạng mất não, mất mắt và bị phá hủy một cách dã man để giấu đi thân phận của người xấu số, mời gọi thanh tra Franck Sharko quay trở lại đội Hình sự sau mấy năm tưởng như đã quen với công việc bàn giấy. Hai mạch truyện, hai hướng điều tra khác nhau song cuối cùng đều quy về một mối mang tên Hội Chứng E, hé lộ một thực tế và một trang sử tàn bạo, nơi giới hạn của con người dường như là vô tận, rằng bất cứ ai đều có khả năng thực hiện tội ác.

Đọc Hội Chứng E của Franck Thilliez tớ liên tưởng ngay đến các tiểu thuyết trinh thám của tác giả Jeffery Deaver vì ấn tượng với lượng kiến thức khổng lồ của hai tác giả này quá thể, thật sự luôn ấy. Nếu các bạn muốn đọc một cuốn trinh thám siêu bự về kiến thức lịch sử, thần kinh học, tâm lý học và đặc biệt là muốn tu bổ trí não thêm về cách hoạt động của mắt dẫn truyền lên bộ não hay cách để tạo dựng ra một bộ phim-ẩn-trong-một-bộ-phim với những thuật ngữ chuẩn thì Hội Chứng E có đủ hết, không chê vào đâu được. Cảm giác như tác giả đã dành phần nhiều thời gian tìm tòi, chọn lọc và miệt mài đầu tư chất xám vào cuốn tiểu thuyết trinh thám này. Ban đầu tớ nghĩ là tớ sẽ - theo nghĩa đen - đọc một cách lê lết từng trang ấy nhưng mà không, tôi đã nhầm rồi quý dzị ạ, vì Hội Chứng E siêu siêu siêu cuốn, cứ phải lật lật giở giở để xem hướng điều tra của Lucie và Sharko rồi sẽ đi đến đâu, hé lộ ra những gì và tên tội phạm chủ mưu với bộ óc thông minh đi trước thời đại này là ai. Nghe có vẻ hơi sai sai khi dành cho hung thủ một lời khen ngợi như thế, nhưng quả đúng thật, tên này thông minh thấy gớm luôn không ai đọ được đâu.
Một điểm tớ thích nữa đó là sự vận hành của cốt truyện có tính liên kết chặt chẽ với nhau với từng chi tiết trải dài từ quá khứ cho đến hiện tại, tất cả đều quy về một mối duy nhất mang tên Hội Chứng E, có những điều tưởng như không liên quan mà lại liên quan không tưởng. Kiểu wow, sao điều này có thể được nhỉ? Nhưng mà trong tác phẩm này thì nó có thể đấy các bạn tôi ơi.
Tuy nhiên điểm trừ có lẽ là mở bài và thân bài rất ổn rất hoành tráng, tuy nhiên kết bài khi hai vị cảnh sát của chúng ta đối đầu với hung thủ sao nó hụt hẫng thế, kiểu đầu voi đuôi (hơi) chuột ấy. Cá nhân tớ đã mong có đoạn combat hay cân não đấu trí ngầu đét cơ nhưng đáng tiếc là không như mong muốn, cảm giác tác giả hơi sống nhanh quá tác giả ơi.
Nhưng nói thế thôi, nhìn chung Hội Chứng E là tác phẩm đồ sộ cả về kiến thức lẫn nội dung. Siêu ấn tượng về khối lượng kiến thức của tác giả, thực sự ấy. Có yếu tố yêu đương trong này (thở dài cái thườn thượt) nhưng may là không nhiều đâu, nếu không máu xéo sắc của mị đã bùng cháy lên rồi. Dù sao đây cũng là trinh thám chứ hổng phải tiểu thuyết tình yêu gì cho cam hén. À có thắc mắc nhỏ không rõ do bản gốc hay do dịch (nhưng mị nghĩ là do bản gốc) mà trong đây nhiều lúc cảm thấy hơi bất hợp lý qua cách gọi một nữ trung úy cảnh sát gần 40 tuổi hai mụn con và góa chồng là “cô gái nhỏ”, cứ thấy hơi... Tóm cái quần lại thì quyển này hay, đoạn kết hẫng chút hơi buồn tí nhưng đừng bỏ qua ẻm vì Hội chứng E ổn lắm. Recommend cho các bạn mình nhớ.

No conocía a Thilliez y me ha gustado. Un caso muy complejo, bien contado, con unos investigadores que me han llegado hondo. Un novela que sin ser “trepidante” te envuelve realmente en un mundo paralelo. Aun así, no me ha atrapado lo suficiente como para no combinarlo con otras lecturas. Seguiré con otros libros de este autor.

This was a fascinating book, full of mystery and horror, and even some romance.
The idea of a movie that can affect its viewer is a good one. Like The Ring, anyone who watches it is deeply affected, if not killed within seven days, but what makes it scary and even more interesting is that there is no supernatural element to the story. It’s all based on things that could really happen. I don’t want to give too much away, but it really is a terrifying look into what we allow to enter our brains through our eyes.
The writing was well-paced, with enough suspense to satisfy any mystery and even horror lover. There are two main storylines going at the same time, and while they may not appear to be connected at first, they really are, adding another layer to the book.
Although the characters are not the most unique (one cop with mental issues, and the other one with trouble getting close to other people), they keep things moving along. It never becomes dull and, actually, some of the more interesting parts have little to do with the story itself and more to do with the process of filmmaking, so you might even learn something about that.
I do recommend this one for horror and mystery lovers.

Xin lỗi vì đến tận giờ mới đọc. Aigoo. Gần đây rộ lên những video các thanh niên chém giết người không ghê tay, chặt đầu rạch xẻ thân thể người ta kể cả khi người ta chưa chết, các bạn đã xem chưa? Nếu chưa xem thì đừng xem mà hãy đọc Hội Chứng E này này.
Hội Chứng E – cuốn sách trinh thám hình sự của Pháp mà mình đã chần chừ bao lâu chưa đọc. Trong cuốn sách này có một cuộn phim bí ẩn về một đoạn video ghê rợn có khả năng làm người ta mù sau khi xem, 5 xác chết được chôn sâu 2 mét tại một công trường, tất cả đều mất não và mắt, những vụ giết người kinh tởm của những kẻ liên quan đến cái video kia. Cuối cùng thì đoạn phim cũ rích đó chứa cái gì mà có sức ảnh hưởng lớn đến vậy, làm người ta thanh toán lẫn nhau bằng cách kinh khủng như thế? Tại sao não và mắt của các nạn nhân lại bị lấy đi? Hội Chứng E thực sự là gì?
Cuốn sách này đã được rất nhiều người recommend cho mình để mình đọc, và thật sự là không hề phí thời gian của mình chút nào. Mặc dù 200 trang đầu hơi chậm chạp nên mình có hơi ngãng ra và đọc cuốn khác, nhưng đến 280 trang sau thì thực sự page turner kinh khủng luôn. Qua cuốn sách này, bạn sẽ có được những thông tin về những câu chuyện kinh khủng có thật trên thế giới về chứng điên loạn tập thể, về giới hạn về sự ác độc và tàn bạo của con người, về những dự án đáng sợ của các tổ chức lớn ở châu Âu. Bạn sẽ hiểu được tại sao mấy thằng trong video kinh khủng mình nói ở đầu lại có thể làm những chuyện kinh tởm như vậy mà không hề thay đổi nét mặt.
Tuy nhiên cuốn sách này không dành cho những bạn dị ứng với những chi tiết hơi kinh tởm máu me một chút (hoặc các bạn có thể đọc mà bỏ qua hoặc đọc lướt những phần đó). Và có một điều khiến mình không thể rate full 5 sao cho Hội Chứng E đó là 40 trang cuối: cảm giác cái kết hơi vội vàng. Như kiểu Franck viết đến đó thấy sách dài quá nên kết nhanh nhanh không người đọc chạy hết ấy?! =)) Với cả đoạn tìm ra trùm cuối hơi lãng xẹt chút. Mình muốn nó lắt léo hơn một chút cơ.
Ưu điểm rõ ràng của cuốn sách này là phần dịch thuật rất mượt, đọc dễ hiểu, mình có thể nắm được ngay mấu chốt của vấn đề dù chúng liên quan đến y học, thần kinh học, tâm lý học khá phức tạp. Nói chung là nhìn sách to thì sợ nhưng mà chăm chú đọc thì cũng nhanh hết thui các bạn ạhhhhhhhhh

Mở đầu với vụ án năm xác chết bị cắt xẻ dã man được tình cờ tìm thấy ở một công trường nước Pháp, mắt và não bị lấy đi, răng và tay cũng bị chặt đứt để không thể xác định nhân dạng. Thanh tra Franck Sharko ở Cục Phòng chống và Trấn áp Bạo lực đã lui khỏi thực địa từ lâu, hiện chỉ làm công việc bàn giấy do có chấn thương tâm lý, đã được điều đến quan sát vụ án này. Cùng lúc đó, nữ cảnh sát Lucie Henebelle ở một địa điểm hoàn toàn khác nhận được cuộc gọi từ người tình cũ đã lâu không gặp, hốt hoảng bảo rằng anh ta đột ngột bị mù sau khi xem một cuộn băng video…
Quyển này thấy được khen nhiều nên mình cũng đọc thử nè, mình vẫn miệt mài tìm kiếm chân ái trinh thám - kinh dị, nghe nói đề cập nhiều về chủ đề điện ảnh nên nhảy hố xem thế nào. Mỗi lần Sharko và Lucie phát hiện manh mối mới là sẽ bị hung thủ hẫng tay trên, giết hết những người có khả năng cung cấp thông tin giá trị cho cảnh sát, bị dắt đi lòng vòng, đi ra nước ngoài điều tra luôn. Lúc đầu Franck với Lucie không làm việc chung đâu, sau mới bắt tay hợp tác, có điều mình thắc mắc là Franck hơn Lucie 15 tuổi, Lucie 37 tuổi, có 2 con gái luôn rồi mà Franck gọi cô ấy là “cô gái bé nhỏ”, nhỏ chỗ nào??? Có vẻ phần tình cảm tác giả ráng đưa vô để không khí bớt nặng nề, mà cảm thấy nó vội vàng quá, đọc cứ tưởng hai nhân vật chính còn trẻ lắm, đã vậy không có miếng chemistry gì, kiểu anh tôi điều tra chung nên chúng ta phải yêu nhau à…
Điều mình mong chờ là những kiến thức về điện ảnh, mà hóa ra nó không hẳn là đặc sắc ồ quao mấy, liên quan về giải phẫu, thần kinh nhiều hơn mà mấy cái đó mình biết rồi nên là bị hụt hẫng. Chốt lại, mình hợp trinh thám châu Á hơn nên mình không thích quyển này, với lại nó dày cộp thế nên bị chán, cái này là tùy gu rồi. Ai có hứng thú với vụ án liên quan phim ảnh, thần kinh thì có thể đọc.
Quyển này thấy được khen nhiều nên mình cũng đọc thử nè, mình vẫn miệt mài tìm kiếm chân ái trinh thám - kinh dị, nghe nói đề cập nhiều về chủ đề điện ảnh nên nhảy hố xem thế nào. Mỗi lần Sharko và Lucie phát hiện manh mối mới là sẽ bị hung thủ hẫng tay trên, giết hết những người có khả năng cung cấp thông tin giá trị cho cảnh sát, bị dắt đi lòng vòng, đi ra nước ngoài điều tra luôn. Lúc đầu Franck với Lucie không làm việc chung đâu, sau mới bắt tay hợp tác, có điều mình thắc mắc là Franck hơn Lucie 15 tuổi, Lucie 37 tuổi, có 2 con gái luôn rồi mà Franck gọi cô ấy là “cô gái bé nhỏ”, nhỏ chỗ nào??? Có vẻ phần tình cảm tác giả ráng đưa vô để không khí bớt nặng nề, mà cảm thấy nó vội vàng quá, đọc cứ tưởng hai nhân vật chính còn trẻ lắm, đã vậy không có miếng chemistry gì, kiểu anh tôi điều tra chung nên chúng ta phải yêu nhau à…
Điều mình mong chờ là những kiến thức về điện ảnh, mà hóa ra nó không hẳn là đặc sắc ồ quao mấy, liên quan về giải phẫu, thần kinh nhiều hơn mà mấy cái đó mình biết rồi nên là bị hụt hẫng. This is a fast-paced eerie thriller, with a neuroscience basis that Michael Crichton would have loved. The characters are well-developed and unique, and had me turning the pages to see what would happen to them.
The book is a stand-alone story, but the last chapter introduces something new to be continued in the sequel, Bred to Kill. I will definitely be reading more by this author. Highly recommended.

Sự kinh hoàng ẩn giấu sau những lớp phim được Lucie Hennebelle điều tra và phát hiện, dẫn đến một loạt những án mạng tiếp theo. Mới đầu không rõ được 2 vụ việc (bộ phim và những xác chết bị cắt xẻo dã man) liên quan với nhau thế nào, nhưng tác giả đã khéo léo liên kết hai vụ một cách logic và phát triển mạch truyện theo hướng điều tra giết người hàng loạt, với tội ác vô cùng bạo lực và khủng khiếp. Sự thật đằng sau về hội chứng E và ảnh hưởng của hội chứng lên tâm lý và thần kinh con người khiến mình rợn gáy vì mức độ tàn bạo vô nhân tính của những kẻ cố ý tạo ra hội chứng này.
Mình không thích yếu tố lãng mạn trong truyện. Cách hai thanh tra Lucie và Sharko yêu nhau quá đột ngột và thiếu tính thuyết phục với mình. Mình không hiểu là tại sao phải chèn thêm cái mạch lãng mạn (dù chỉ là mạch phụ) vào truyện trinh thám làm gì, chỉ khiến câu chuyện bị loãng và làm đứt đoạn phần trinh thám hồi hộp. Tương tác giữa hai nhân vật này không đủ thú vị để mình phải theo dõi họ mỗi khi họ ở với nhau. Mình thấy họ thực sự phát huy khả năng của mình khi làm việc độc lập và sau đó là báo cáo những gì tìm được về sau.
Truyện tập trung nhiều về mảng phim, điện ảnh và thần kinh học nên có nhiều đoạn thuật ngữ chuyên môn hoá nhiều mình chỉ đọc lướt.

Subliminal horrible images in an old 50's film acquired by chance by a collector causes him to develop hysterical blindness. When his friend Lucie Henebelle investigates, she finds even more hidden imagery in the frames than was left there for initial discovery. By another chance, detective Franck Sharko stumbles on a connection between this film he has yet to see and five hideously dismembered bodies just found buried. The investigation leads them to Egypt and Canada and it soon becomes evident that someone will stop at nothing to keep secrets.
I really enjoyed this very intriguing thriller and loved the characters - both have obviously figured in a couple of books each before being brought together in this one. The narrative and general feeling is sufficiently different to make it obvious that you are not reading an American or British book, but in a good way! I can only guess, but my feeling is that the translation is a very successful one.
I like the conclusion as well - the at one time overwhelming conspiracy theory feeling was brought into the realm of the plausible and it really works well. I had made up my mind on searching out the follow-up, which is also translated, before the end of this. The final pages I had the feeling was trying to make me do just that, as the final happenings was not really connected to the preceding ones and felt a bit out of the blue. Or maybe I'm missing something. It doesn't really impact on the rest, so no worries. Highly recommended and a hairs width away from the full five stars from me.

Tác giả này có phong cách viết trinh thám rùng rợn khá ấn tượng. Tội ác tàn nhẫn biến thái cùng với cuộn phim bí ẩn gây mù mắt khiến không khí truyện phảng phất siêu nhiên. Nhưng tác giả đã nỗ lực lý giải bí ẩn siêu nhiên cùng căn nguyên tội ác tương đối hợp lý khi kết hợp phân tích khoa-y học, thể hiện sự đầu tư kiến thức đáng nể. Mạch truyện không lan man nhưng điều tra theo 2 tuyến trải dài mấy quốc gia từ Pháp sang Ai Cập, Canada, nhiều tình tiết khá phức tạp. Tuy có pha thuyết âm mưu nhưng đoạn kết giải đáp cũng tương đối hợp lý và trọn vẹn, nhưng cảm giác hơi nhanh. Boss không bất ngờ vì chả có gì gợi ý để mà đoán trước khi tác giả bật mí.
Hai main cảnh sát là Sharko và Henebelle trước đều có những truyện riêng rẽ đến vụ này lại được gắn kết phá án với nhau. Tác giả có hơi ác khi cài một sự kiện bất ngờ ở trang cuối khiến người đọc phải bứt rứt muốn hóng cuốn sau về bộ đôi này. Hy vọng NN sẽ còn tiếp tục làm truyện của Franck Thilliez.

Gostei mesmo muito da forma como Franck Thilliez - utilizando factos históricos, ilustrativos do lado mais negro do ser humano; o conceito cientifico de mensagens subliminares e as técnicas e magia do cinema - constrói uma história assustadora e empolgante.
Gostei muito do comissário Sharko, esquizofrénico e esmagado pelo desgosto.
Gostei de Lucie, dividida entre o amor pela família e a paixão pelo trabalho.
Gostei mais ou menos do estilo de escrita. Alguns diálogos e descrições pareceram-me um pouco desleixados e sem sentido. Talvez a culpa seja do tradutor...
Não gostei do relacionamento entre Lucie e Sharko, porque não me pareceu muito coerente com o comportamento revelado anteriormente pelo comissário. E, também, fiquei bastante "surpreendida e intrigada" com o facto de o amor "curar" a esquizofrenia...(?)
Não gostei mesmo nada do epílogo. Um final de episódio de telenovela com cenas do próximo capitulo?

Os órfãos de Duplessis - nas décadas de 40 e 50, o governo canadiano subsidiou instituições da igreja católica, nas quais, com base em falsos diagnósticos de doença mental, são internadas milhares de crianças, órfãs ou ilegítimas, as quais são sujeitas a abusos físicos e psicológicos inimagináveis. Este é um facto histórico, que desconhecia, e que nem nos meus piores pesadelos poderia conceber.

Da Vinci Code goes Cold War. I found the premise (could watching a film really make someone blind, change their brain?) interesting enough to want to read the book, but difficult to grasp throughout. I kept wanting someone to stop and explain "Syndrome E" in a way I could really grasp. By the end, I still couldn't understand exactly what was being proposed. Along the way, I found the characters interesting, especially Lucie (not so much Franck whom I found more odd than interesting.) The part where Franck goes to Egypt I could barely understand what the point was at all. Early on I was distracted by what seemed like odd word choices by the translator --- Lucie wearing "pedal pushers"? Capris, yes, but I haven't heard anyone call them "pedal pushers" since 1960 or so. "Neon" lights in the hospital hallway? That would be avant-garde! But wouldn't they more likely be fluorescent? And still, annoyed and confused, I still wanted to know what happened, which says a lot for compelling nature of the plot and characters. I would certainly be willing to read another book in the series -- maybe in French next time.

Des cadavres retrouvés assassinés de la même manière des années auparavant de 3 jeunes filles aucune relation les réunisse.
L'enquêteur responsable de l'affaire est décédé sans aucun succès de résoudre l'affaire qui restait classée pendant des longues années.
Canada:
Ces films ont nous a remonté Aux Enfants illégitime enfants nés hors cadre de mariage abandonnés aux orphelinats de Canada dans les années cinquante, un nombre qui d'augmente avec le temps et l'état n'arrive plus à couvrir tous le nécessaire pour leurs éducation et leurs santé, elle a décidé de changer les orphelinats au asiles ou aux hôpitaux psychiatriques qui assure une hospitalisation aux enfants arriérés et malades mentaux Diagnostiqués subitement et en croissance illogique.
De terribles événements se passaient à ces hôpitaux des expérimentations inhumaines au regard de ces enfants abandonnés victimes d'exploitation atroce de leurs cerveaux afin de réaliser un ensemble des études en neurosciences qui étaient secretes à l'époque.

Les thèmes de la psychologie et de la science sont au rendez-vous dans ce livre offrant l’occasion d’en savoir plus sur l’incidence de la vision sur notre cerveau, les phénomènes inexpliqués d’hystérie collective, la neurocommunication et les images subliminales… Et oui c’est tout un programme!

2,5* Chủ đề sách khá thú vị. Mình có tìm hiểu về tác giả thì thấy rằng thế mạnh của tác giả này là lồng ghép những yếu tố khoa học viễn tưởng (sci-fi) vào cốt truyện trinh thám. Giờ mình hiểu tại sao có nhiều người kêu quyển này rất ám ảnh. Đúng như nhân vật Lucie nói cuối truyện, giờ cô chỉ muốn con mình nhìn màn hình máy tính, TV càng ít càng tốt.
Ngoài thế mạnh đó ra thì mình thấy quyển này cũng không có gì quá đặc biệt so với những quyển trinh thám châu Âu khác từng đọc. Nội tâm nhân vật, cách phá án đi theo đúng khuôn mẫu của truyện trinh thám châu Âu đương đại, không tệ nhưng cũng không có gì nổi bật.

Es una de las tramas más interesantes que he leído en mi vida. Muy buen libro, me ha gustado mucho. He adorado la interacción de Lucie y de Sharko. Y ese final...he tenido que he empezar el siguiente porque no podía acabar así, que angustia. Muy recomendado para los fans del thriller en su máxima expresión y de las historias inteligentes.

Với mình cuốn này không đơn thuần chỉ là một cuốn kinh dị trinh thám. Thật sự phục tác giả khi viết ra được một cuốn psychological thriller quá đỉnh luôn. Đọc mà ám ảnh tâm lý thật sự. Quá hay.

There's a lot I can say about Franck Thilliez's epically twisted thriller Syndrome E. Was it one of the best contemporary suspense novels I've read in the past five years? Oh yes! Was it wickedly original, the plot masterfully crafted down to the last stunning little detail? You bet. But there's one very important thing I can and must say about this novel. It is not an easy read. It plumbs the depths of humankind's cruelty to one another, and baby, them depths are pitch black.
This is what unfolds in Syndrome E. It's a mind-bending tale of brainwashing, mutilation, globe-trotting insanity, all linking back to a frightening little film from the 1950's showing odd and nauseating symbolism. It's a novel first and foremost about the power authority figures have over the most vulnerable members of society...and with that, come heinous abuses of that power, the wreckage of human minds and maybe even spirits.
It starts with a middle-aged Belgian film buff called Ludovic Senechal who, after the purchase of a mysterious old film reel from the son of a deceased collector, unexpectedly goes blind only moments after watching part of the footage.
At first, this is something that may seem to the reader a tragedy extending from the most surreal corner of the supernatural realm, but hold on! Everything in this book is rooted in the most cold-hearted and devious of human actions.
The film is basically handed from one person to another and the main people surrounding this piece of footage, like poor Ludovic's ex-girlfriend, Lucie, a police detective, and Inspector Franck Sharko, who's got one hell of a mental battle he's facing already, run head-first into this hidden monster of a crime within the movie. The film plays around these bizarre layers of imagery, the surface being a woman who gets her eye slashed open and a little girl acting like she's in a drug-induced haze, squaring off against a bull who stops in mid-attack. This is all, like I mentioned, on this surface layer of film that the director carefully constructed to hide a much deeper and freaking terrifying meaning. What can be even scarier than what I just mentioned? Yeah...you'll find out soon enough. And the backdrop to this fifty+ year conspiracy is in the current day, being violently protected by barbaric murderers who at some point, literally rip the guts out of a person close to discovery of their sickening secrets.
There's a parallel investigation going on with the enigmatic character of Inspector Franck Sharko, a diagnosed schizophrenic grieving intensely over the death of his wife and daughter. He is enmired in a hellish world of unearthed corpses, their skulls sawed off, the mutilated state of their bodies surely pointing to the calculating methods of a serial killer. How this links up to the case Detective Lucie Henebelle is involved in is ingenious, as moment by moment, the clues connecting two seemingly incongruous situations loop together in a series of events that point to a mind-blowing (literally!) scientific explanation.
The killer/s are and have been engineering BOTH sets of crimes, all to cover up a massive atrocity which took place with orphans in the 1950's, which goes back to the dazed and glassy eyed little girl and the bull in the creepy footage, causing the poor Belgian's blindness. And the thing about the blindness is that...strangely enough, you think it's going to be the prominent storyline, the big mystery that is the focal point of the entire plot, but what it amounts to is a clever entry into a wider, darker, and infinitely frightening universe where one horror leads to a bigger horror, culminating in the ultimate horror.
What I liked about this thriller is the supreme attention to detail. This is one of the best reads in the genre that never doubts the readers' intelligence, but also doesn't sink into overly-plotted, convoluted writing.
You keep hurtling down the tracks at a near-frenetic pace but it never becomes overwhelming. Whether Sharko is fighting off a paid agent in the Egyptian desert who has dragged him there to torture information out of him or whether Lucie is ducking an orchestrated attempted murder of herself and an informer in hiding in the Canadian woods--every moment of action feels real, totally authentic. The relationship between the characters of Lucie and Sharko is also beautifully written. I really liked how there was a gradual build-up to this burgeoning romance between them, but one that didn't feel like it was awkwardly, randomly inserted. We see these two working together as friends and allies on this bewildering and disgusting case, both put in horrible danger and both dealing with emotional baggage, one much greater than the other, but both trying their hardest to move forward into a somewhat uncertain future.
Lucie is a vibrantly written female character. Props to Franck Thilliez for writing a woman who is third-dimensional and confident in her abilities! She is a mother who can go from tenderly caring for her sick child to shooting her way out of a burning house (a GREAT scene). She's extremely perceptive and dedicated to her work, seeking love, but not making it the center of her existence. She leapt off the page, I could pretty much see the film rolling in my head as I read her dialogue and actions. The same with Sharko who is such a miserably haunted man, in contrast to Lucie's relative normalcy. He battles with visions of a little girl called Eugenie, who is a mental amalgamation of his worst shame and regret. Eugenie pops up during his most stressed-out moments and is actually a crucial little character in the book, often playing out as a voice of warning. It was fascinating! Never dipped into the ridiculous or satire, which could've been the case in the hands of lesser authors. Both Lucie and Sharko are fully-realized characters who are struggling to understand a widespread, organized criminal act that cannot be quickly resolved. The layers to this are peeled away, one by one, to reveal an infected center.
During their investigation, and the murders which occur--one man is disemboweled, another man and his girlfriend are stabbed by what looks like a maniacal butcher--the film footage from the 1950's links up to a mysterious hospital in Canada and an old yet official plan to render the existences of orphaned children as nothing more than slaves and captives. How this intersects with the blank-eyed child star of the old footage, whose name is later uncovered to be Alice Tonquin, is the key that unlocks everything.
And Christ, does it. The levels that human beings will sink over money and control never ceases to amaze me. The book takes it to the heights and in the process, very few people were able to walk away from what happened in 1950's Montreal, with their hearts, minds and souls clean. In fact, certain individuals would go on to further filthy themselves by perpetrating generational monstrosities.
This book was an excellent example of top-level thriller/suspense writing. I am dying to read the sequel, Bred To Kill, and continue following the kick-ass crime solving skills of Lucie Henebelle and Franck Sharko.
A big thumbs up to Thilliez for creating a work of crime fiction that was never boring, not even for a minute, and never cliche. A strong 5 stars.

Desde mi punto de vista, con la aparición del personaje de Lucie Henebelle estas nuevas entregas de la serie de Franck Sharko han ganado mucho, son más dinámicas, sin resultar tan opresivas como las dos anteriores, aunque Thilliez sigue llevando a los protagonistas hasta el extremo.

Lâu lắm mới đọc được một cuốn trinh thám hay. Không phải một vụ giết người thông thường cần tìm ra một thủ phạm với một động cơ và phương thức, mà là cả một hệ thống thông tin và kiến thức dắt díu nhau đưa tới kết quả cuối cùng. Hung thủ cuối cùng thì hơi nhạt nhẽo nhưng toàn bộ quá trình khui ra vấn đề khá hấp dẫn lôi cuốn.
