I found this book to be really good. Two of the main characters in the story (Jack Kelly and Paul Mann) fought in WWI, so know all about life and death struggles when a country is at war.
This story is mainly centered around Papua and the Territory of New Guinea which we now know as PNG. The story takes you through the build-up of Japanese forces with the intention of invading Australia, but they do not account for the tenacity of the New Guinea Volunteer Rifles (NGVR), mainly made up of ex WWI defence force, plantation owners, lawyers and basically anybody who would not be eligible to enroll in the ADF.
They are tasked with fighting off the Japanese forces, but they have limited supplies and men to carry out the task, but they do have determination to defend their much-loved country and way of life. Jack's schooner called Independence plays a major part in the defence, resupply and rescue of people around the islands.
This story, although not factual, almost makes you think that what these people went through was very much like the real struggles that took place in PNG during WWII, especially as PNG was very much the front line to stop the advance of Japanese forces from entering Australia.

Enjoyed knowing the background of this war and I'm sure that most of us remain ignorant about different cultures and how people get sucked into a regime that is so dictatorial and don't use or question what is being pushed into you and ou get sucked in. Love Peter Watt and the way he writes it seems you can get into the story and get engrossed in it.

Another terrific read from Peter Watt
I love the way he raises the memory of forgotten chapters of the wars like the NGVR and the fearsome resistance they provided to the Japanese advances in New Guinea in 1942
Loved the book

The second book in the Papua trilogy is set in Papua and New Guinea during the first half of WWII. The second generation of characters join their parents in war. Again a well told story and easy to read. The reader would definitely need to read the first book in the trilogy to have a better understanding of the relationships between the main characters. I am look forward to reading the third book shortly.

As always, another fantastic novel by Peter Watt. He excels in describing the emotional impact that the tragedies, trauma, and unimaginable grief that war brings upon the characters. The authors obvious research into actual events ensures that, the not so well known, are never forgotten... Lest We Forget.
