Mature men making mistakes - but eventually learning from them and promising to do better - is my kryptonite so this final book in Jay's Fisher & Church series was right up my street.
Nick Fisher has driven me nuts throughout this series, I get him, I get why he behaves like he does, but boy has it been frustrating so it's intensely gratifying to see him finally accepting that he is worthy of love and that he can rely on someone else.
That someone else being Madigan Church, of course, a man with so much patience I think he's on his way to sainthood, although he's no angel himself either and also has his own hangups.
Together though, they're a dynamic force that truly comes into its own in this book which sees the main suspense coming from Nick's reunion with his long-estranged mother, which provides the hook upon which all our tensions lie.
Apart from the odd moment, I found this book incredibly believable, it's a sad fact of life that people become victims as they age, not only from strangers, but from those closest to them, so when Nick and Mads visit Chloe, Nick's mum, and something doesn't feel quite right, you know there's going to be some prodding and poking behind the scenes from these two men!
As Nick struggles to reconnect with the woman who left him with his abusive father when he was only eight -heed the trigger warnings Jay mentions as there are moments which are tough to read - he also knows there's more than just the diagnosis of Parkinson's making things strange.
No spoilers but, as with the first two books, our idiots find themselves investigating a situation that isn't easy to decipher and puts them in trouble once more.
I loved the pacing of this book, it tricks you into thinking it's going to be a fairly chilled relationship-forward peek into how the two men are doing with their young charges who they rescued in the previous instalment.
But no, we get a lovely interlude with them having some honest and deep conversations about where things are going and whether Nick should keep the appointment he made to visit with his mother, before Jay throws the reader in the deep end.
Watching these two figuring out what's going on is an enjoyable ride while, as I said in my intro, a frustrating one at times as the reader sees that Nick is going to make the same mistakes all over again.
It's necessary for the development of both plot and relationship and I'm truly glad Jay doesn't leave it hanging without there being some fallout and major accountability.
That these two men in their 50s are able to communicate fully and make themselves vulnerable to the unexpected love they've found with each other is so gratifying to read and when we leave them, it's firm in the knowledge that they've put the work in to make their relationship stronger.
It's been such a pleasure having mature characters who don't play games and who, while they're human and have weaknesses, also realise that there is strength in letting someone be there for you.
I'll miss hanging out and watching them land themselves in all sorts of trouble but, ultimately, succeed and I'm pretty sure they'll be driving each other nuts until their end of days!

The Promise of Together is the third book in Jay Hogan’s Fisher & Church series, and it picks up a few weeks after the end of book two ( The Question of Us ), when Nick received a letter from the mother he hasn’t seen for forty-seven years. While the previous two books featured a suspense plot that unfolded on a large scale, this one focuses more on the domestic, with Nick Fisher and Madigan Church continuing to find their way forward as a couple while at the same time discovering and trying to thwart a scheme to perpetrate a despicable fraud.
Note: This is a same-couple series with an overarching plotline, so you need to read The Meaning Of You and The Question of Us first. There are spoilers for those books in this review.
It’s been weeks since Nick received Chloe Fisher’s letter and he still hasn’t decided what to do about it. He has never got over his mother leaving him with his abusive father when he was just eight years old, and his fear of abandonment, the emotional walls he built for self-protection and his stubborn determination never to rely on anyone other than himself have followed him into adulthood and caused problems in his relationships over the years. Fortunately for him, his partner, Madigan Church, is a patient and understanding man, although he has his fair share of hang-ups and insecurities to deal with, too.
By the end of the previous book, Nick and Madigan have been through a lot – proving Nick’s late husband was murdered and smashing an international trafficking ring – and along the way, they’ve fallen in love and have decided they’re in it for the long haul. But they’re still figuring out their dynamic, and Nick’s tendency towards avoidance whenever he’s faced with anything conerning his past or heavy emotions is still causing some friction between them.
Madigan – Mads – knows all too well why Nick is still sitting on the letter two months later, and that his indecision is eating away at him. Mads makes it clear that he will stand by whatever Nick decides, but also that he needs to make a decision as to whether he’s going to see Chloe or not, because not doing so is clearly hurting him. A few days later, Nick tells Mads he wants to meet her and asks Mads to go with him. Even though Nick is still so very conflicted, Chloe has the answers to the myriad of questions he’s had running around in his head for years, and talking to her is the only way he’s going to get them. Mads is already planning to attend an antiquarian book fair which is being held close to where Chloe now lives - and suggests they can visit her while they’re in town.
The meeting between the estranged mother and son is… awkward, but not hostile. Nick isn’t sure what he’d expected, and is almost surprised when he realises he can see see parts of the woman he remembers in the woman in front of him now – but he’s here for answers, and doesn’t waste time in asking for them. As his mother speaks about that awful night – she’d planned to take Nick with her, but his father came home before she was able to get them both away – Nick listens and gains a better perspective on why she acted as she did. But understanding doesn’t mean he can forgive her for it, or for never getting in touch to check on him, or even send him a birthday card. But as the conversation continues, it becomes clear that Chloe doesn’t expect understanding or forgiveness; she had good reasons for staying away from Nick, but doesn’t expect anything from him after this conversation, if that’s what he wants.
It’s not a comfortable afternoon, but it is a necessary one for Nick – and he doesn’t have any idea of what he wants to happen next, whether this is a one-off meeting or if he wants to have Chloe in his life again. It’s a lot to think about, and then when, at the end of the visit, they meet his mother’s (quasi) stepson, Austin (her late partner’s son), Nick finds himself facing an even bigger dilemma. Austin is immediately confrontational and suspicious, despite Chloe’s assurance that Nick and Mads are old friends (they have decided not to tell anyone that Nick is her son yet), and although his attitude is understandable – he doesn’t know them from Adam after all – something about him is… off. He’s very disrespectful towards Chloe and doesn’t hesitate to criticise her or talk about her health issues in front of two strangers; Nick isn’t happy, but has to admit that just because the guy is an arsehole doesn’t mean he’s up to no good.
I enjoyed The Promise of Together more than the previous book in the series. The scenes between Nick and Chloe are heartbreaking and incredibly well done, the mystery element is so disturbingly plausible, and I enjoy stories featuring an ongoing relationship in which the protagonists are figuring out how to be a couple; making mistakes, fixing them and making all those adjustments that come with being together long-term. I like that Nick and Mads are mature characters with relatable flaws and idiosyncrasies who don’t play games and are learning that it’s not a weakness to ask for help or let someone shoulder part of their burden.
One of the things that has made Nick difficult to like at times has been his tendency to ignore the feelings of others as he charges into something without really thinking it through, putting himself in harm’s way as a result. His behaviour is understandable given the psychological damage he’s suffered due to his childhood, but it’s no less frustrating to watch him jumping feet first into making the same mistakes all over again. His stubborn determination not to need anyone has infuriated and saddened Mads many times; they’re committed to each other and to making a life together, but Nick is still acting first and thinking afterwards. Mads is his rock in this book, but he doesn’t hesitate to call him on his actions big time; he’s got the patience of a saint, but Nick’s recklessness pushes him past his limits, and I was really pleased when he lays it on the line and forces Nick to own his behaviour and admit that it’s time for him to learn to do better.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the journey I’ve taken alongside these two characters, and although I’m sad to see the Fisher & Church series come to an end, I’m pleased to be leaving these two guys in a good place and with their very hard-won HEA. Suspenseful, sexy, dramatic and charmingly tender, The Promise of Together is a gripping read and a terrific series finale.

This series has been a joy, particularly if you like mature MCs, and this last instalment is just the cherry on top.
Both, Nick and Mads have seen a lot in their lives, and inevitably there are issues they are carrying with them, for the better or the worse. I absolutely love how Jay Hogan writes their conversations, their arguments and tenderness.
In this book Nick and Mads have to cross a huge hurdle, one that has an immediate effect on their relationship. Neither man is ‘perfect’ or does things ‘right’ all the time. But if things go wrong, they talk about it, trying to work it out, and every time they do, their bond becomes stronger and deeper. It is really beautiful to see.
Nick’s problems with his mother leaving him are dealt with so much compassion and sensitivity. Coming to terms with his very ambiguous feelings about it all helps him also realize why fully committing himself to another person has been such a difficult struggle. One that he hasn’t been 100% conscious of until this point.
Main thing that bothered me (which is totally personal)
There are too many ILYs throughout the book. You can feel that these two guys are an item and in love, so I really didn’t need that constant verbal confirmation.
Not that this took away from the enjoyment of the story.
Great finale!

Trochę wolnego, to rzeczywistość zostawiłam za drzwiami (może się wypałować 😜) i dokończyłam serię Jay Hogan 😁
Nick przez 47 lat starannie i metodycznie upychał trupy w szafie. Cóż... w końcu wypadły i zaczęły dodatkowo mówić ludzkim głosem, co gorsza takim, który przez pierwsze 8 lat swojego życia kochał, a potem znienawidził. No i nie zostało nic innego, jak wziąć tego byka za rogi 😉
Ale że nasze chłopaki mają nawet nie na drugie, a zdecydowanie na pierwsze imię KŁOPOTY, to spotkanie z mamą Nicka po 47 latach, które oczywiście z założenia miało w siebie wpisane całą masę emocji z uczuciowej palety, zamieniło się w kolejną sprawę, która mogła skończyć niejedno życie - zwłaszcza zaś ich...
Mogą sobie ludzie tam pisać, co chcą i oceniać, jak chcą.
Mnie się spodobało i to jest najważniejsze 😁

If you have a burning fondness for bittersweet romance suspense novels, you will love these three books that make up this trilogy...and I hope, hope, hope, fingers, toes, and eyes crossed, that there is the possibility of there being even more.
Don't expect an instant "happy ever after"...it seems that nothing has ever been easy for Nick and Mads. After the first two books, I was okay with "Happy for Right Now". I probably should have expected this story to be just as complicated, with just as much suspense, as the first two, but I admit to being somewhat surprised...(pleasantly), at how much, was included in this story. That is NOT a complaint or a criticism... I have absolutely loved it all.... every single word! After everything was worked out, I was very happy to see that Nick was finally able to settle things with his mother...yes...the same mother that abandoned him. She was not a particularly a likeable character, but when you knew her whole story, it became clearer, and made you really feel for what she had been through in life. It gave Nick closure that he desperately needed and he was happier and could move on with making a life with Mads.
Their relationship was so very well written. It, over the course of the story, became very real and at times extremely raw. Our Nick has an extremely traumatic past and it seemed as if it was bound and determined to come back and cause as much havoc and pain as possible before finally turning into healing and recovery for everyone concerned.
"The bad guys" were determined to do things without feeling a single touch of remorse. They happily threw Nick and Madigan into another "twisted and tangled" situation seemingly without much hope. I kept the pages turning. almost with a felling of desperation to find what would/could possibly happen next. It's the perfect combination of action and drama, sweet and spice, with a strong and growing relationship for our two wonderful, mature men who totally love each other unconditionally. I highly recommend this trilogy which has become one of my "go-to, reread" favorites by this absolutely amazing author.
If you have a burning fondness for bittersweet romance suspense novels, you will love these three books that make up this trilogy...and I hope, hope, hope, fingers, toes, and eyes crossed, that there is the possibility of there being even more.
Don't expect an instant "happy ever after"...it seems that nothing has ever been easy for Nick and Mads. After the first two books, I was okay with "Happy for Right Now". I probably should have expected this story to be just as complicated, with just as much suspense, as the first two, but I admit to being somewhat surprised...(pleasantly), at how much, was included in this story. That is NOT a complaint or a criticism... I have absolutely loved it all.... every single word! After everything was worked out, I was very happy to see that Nick was finally able to settle things with his mother...yes...the same mother that abandoned him. She was not a particularly a likeable character, but when you knew her whole story, it became clearer, and made you really feel for what she had been through in life. It gave Nick closure that he desperately needed and he was happier and could move on with making a life with Mads.
Their relationship was so very well written. It, over the course of the story, became very real and at times extremely raw. Our Nick has an extremely traumatic past and it seemed as if it was bound and determined to come back and cause as much havoc and pain as possible before finally turning into healing and recovery for everyone concerned.
"The bad guys" were determined to do things without feeling a single touch of remorse. They happily threw Nick and Madigan into another "twisted and tangled" situation seemingly without much hope. I kept the pages turning. almost with a felling of desperation to find what would/could possibly happen next. It's the perfect combination of action and drama, sweet and spice, with a strong and growing relationship for our two wonderful, mature men who totally love each other unconditionally. I highly recommend this trilogy which has become one of my "go-to, reread" favorites by this absolutely amazing author.

Trust that the characters are flawed, with huge argumentation, but are reasonable and mature enough to step over them, to grow and be loved.

2026 Bookish Bingo space I3: a book published this year

I’m done. This is so boring I can’t go on. Book one was great! Book two felt like Nick and Madigan were role playing Scooby and the gang. This one? I thought it would be great to read about how Nick is reconnecting with his mother, but it’s just not holding my attention. I can’t read more than 5 pages without rolling my eyes. Maybe it’s me, but I’m not feeling it.
There’s been lots of repetition, but also some contradictions. I made lots of highlights and notes to start, but I got overwhelmed. Suffice it to say, I got sick of reading that it had been 47 years since Nick last saw his mother. We get it!! It’s been a long time! 🙄🙄 All that said, it’s been much to easy for me to set the book aside and do other mundane things instead. That’s not a good sign for me.
I found the “sexy times” and dirty talk to be cringey. 😬 Sorry, but words like “musty” and “briny” do not paint a sexy picture for me. They leave visions of a dank basement and fishing boats in my head. Eww

It’s no secrets that I love series about the same couple, and this one is now sitting towards the top of my list of favourites.
First things first, I might just be in love with Madigan and Nick, and mostly i’m just very much in love with the relationship they have with each other.
I am just so fascinated by the love that they feel for each other and how it shines through every aspects of their lives and decisions that they make. I love how they always consider how the other will feel and react before they do something. I love how every action they both do is done with careful consideration that it will bring the other happiness and comfort. I just loved how these two knew everything about each other and knew exactly what the other needed in any situation, it was so delightful to read.
I really enjoyed where the storyline took them this time around, mostly because it kept making me burst out into tears because i’m so attached to these two characters and I was so sad for them because they kept hurting and being sad, which really enhanced my reading experience.

Listening to the final chapters of Nick and Mad’s story felt like a total gut-punch. There is just something about hearing two stubborn, fifty-something guys finally crack their shells and actually talk that hits different in audio.
Gary Furlong nailed that “prickly but hurting” vibe. You can really hear the hesitation in Nick’s voice when those old childhood wounds crop up, making his growth feel so much more earned. It wasn’t just a story, it felt like eavesdropping on a real, messy, beautiful relationship. If you’ve been reading these series, the audio is the perfect way to say goodbye to these two.

The Promise of Together by Jay Hogan is the third and last book in the Fisher & Church series. It’s a fantastic book to finish it. It’s not a standalone, so you’ll need to read the first two books first, but they’re so good you won’t even mind.
I don’t know what it is about grown men in their fifties learning how to communicate, but it absolutely wrecks me in the best way. Give me a grumpy, stubborn guy who has spent decades dodging his feelings, who’s made a mess of things, who’s hurt and been hurt, and then let me watch him slowly realise he actually wants love and is willing to work for it? I’m done for.
I’ve loved Nick and Mads since the first book, they are so good for each other… What I loved about their relationship is that nothing felt easy. It’s messy, they are prickly, they backslide, they get defensive and say the wrong thing. There are “OMG, are you really doing this again?” moments. And I definitely wanted to shake Nick once or twice. But that’s what made it better, because it felt real. Because instead of pretending everything is fine, they actually talk. Sometimes badly, sometimes awkwardly. But they stay there. That’s what got me.
The family storyline hit hard too. Old childhood wounds don’t just disappear because you’re older and “supposedly” wiser. Seeing those childhood scars resurface and watching Nick struggle with feeling unworthy all over again was painful. But there was Mads supporting him all the way.
“It’s okay, you know. You’re allowed to hate what she did and still love her at the same time. It’s not a betrayal of yourself. It’s just . . . life.” He shrugged. “It’s messy as hell. Ask me how I know.”
The best part of the book wasn’t the drama or even the suspense. It was the choice. Choosing each other, choosing to stay, choosing to talk it out and to be vulnerable even when it’s scary. Even when it would be easier not to.
There are some incredible side characters who really round out the story. Gaza, Lee, Aaron, and Luther have been popping up throughout the books, and I’ve grown really fond of them. They’ve got so much personality and potential that I’d love for them to eventually get their own book.

As usual, reckless Nick flies headfirst into the face of danger without giving a damn about anyone else's feelings or thoughts. He certainly hasn't been my most favourite of Jay's characters, it has to be said. Other than that, I did suspect the actual perpetrator of the crime . Looking forward to The Greening of Thaddeus Grey.

These two guys have certainly taken me on quite the journey over the last three books, but this one has to be my favourite.
Mads and Nick make quite the pair and certainly manage to find trouble wherever they go.
Nick's mother contacting him out of the blue certainly threw them both for a loop. It was well done and the emotions that poured off of Nick and his mum, as well as Mads who always has Nick's back, were complicated and real.
There were parts of the book that had me holding my breath, not wanting to read further, just in case, but at the same time needing to keep reading to see what was going to happen.
These two come with a lot of emotional baggage, but together they are strong enough to get through just about anything. They'll both have to continue to communicate and remember to take into account the other person when making decisions and I feel I can leave them for now, knowing they be doing just that.
I hope we get to catch up with them again, and I hope Gazza, Lee and Aaron get their stories because they all deserve HEAs too.

3.5* rounded up because the writing is really good as always. But I was not really sold in this last instalment. I don't know what I was expecting but it just didn't hit me in the feels like it probably should have had. Still nice to see these two together even if I think Nick is still not there 100%. But I think that's probably just me and my insecurities.
Did not realise Thaddeus would have his own book, so that was a nice surprise and I'm looking forward to reading it.

Oh man, I have been waiting for this one, and I was NOT disappointed.
Nick and Mads just can't stay out of trouble. Even the simplest of trips or visits lead to drama.
I was drawn right back into their story. I was laughing with them, but then the next minute, I was holding my breath, needing to know what trouble was coming next.
They both have their emotional damage, however they are both exactly what the other needs.
But word to the wise - don't listen to the last say 20% in the car - I was on the highway and had to fight back tears.
I absolutely have loved this series, these guys and the journey they have been on.
Would love to see them again somewhere along the way

The final book of the series and since the major plot points from series were wrapped up in the last book I assumed this would be a heavily relationship focused book. I was only half right. Yes, Nick and Mads do have to work on their relationship and Nicks childhood issues but to do that there is another mystery to solve, this one a little closer to home.
A great last installment and I'm glad we had it. I'm confident that Mads and Nick are solid now in their HEA.

Fitting end to an amazing trilogy (an audio review)
I loved The Meaning of You, and the second book in the trilogy, The Question of Us, was even better. I had very high expectations for The Promise of Together and wasn’t disappointed.
I have to take a moment to say I was strolling on a beach near Thames on the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand while listening to Gary Furlong’s beautiful narration of Jay’s amazing words. I’d been so excited the audio became available that I was happy to integrate the listening into my vacation on the other side of the world. As always, Gary’s performance was brilliant and I loved listening to him every moment - especially with that lovely accent. Truly lyrical.
Okay – the book! I loved the first two, as I’ve said, so I was happy to nab this one. Mads and Nick had wormed their way into my heart as they have navigated the treacherous waters of a new relationship. That’s daunting enough these days, but to start fresh in your fifties is even more perilous. You’ve lived over half a lifetime and to adjust to having a new person in your life is a challenge. Nick, newly widowed, also has the layer of grief upon that. The first two books in this series were about a mystery with people at arm’s length. And the two men embarking on risky adventures to save men they don’t even know was exciting to read about.
Book three is about Nick’s mother – or her reappearance in his life. Nick has to reconcile her abandonment of him as a young child. He has to revisit a painful time in his life and see things through different eyes as his mother shares her reality after having left an abusive marriage. Having been adopted, and later meeting my biological parents, I can say I understood Nick’s dilemma of trying to piece things together. Of course, I wanted him to really hear his mother’s story. Then comes the mystery as things aren’t as they seem.
I won’t go into detail because I want the listener to sink into the story without having preconceived notions. I will say the story unfolded in a way that impressed me. I love Jay’s writing and I think the Fischer and Church trilogy is some of her best work. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next…

At this point Mads needs a long service medal for putting up with Nick, and they've only been together a few months!!
Nick has definitely had some personal growth throughout the series, but he's still rushing in to dangerous situations and not thinking of the consequences that might arise for himself, or for the people who love him. There is finally a breakthrough point though where Nick realises why he behaves this way even though he knows that he shouldn't, and the conversation where he talks about this revelation with Mads was really emotional and a long time coming.
I liked the main plot for this book which sees Nick finally reconnecting with the mother who left him behind as a child. Her story was really sad and even though her actions made logical sense, I would also struggle to move past it like Nick does. I have that in common with Nick though, although the gap between seeing my own mother wasn't anywhere near as long but it does leave behind a lot of psychological damage, and I think that's been portrayed really well throughout the series.
The dramatic situation that Nick and Mads find themselves in with this book was both disturbingly real feeling, yet also felt like something you'd see on a TV drama and I really liked that mix! The stakes were high, there was a race against the clock, and Nick and Mads's ability to think outside the box came into play in a really good way.
There's also some lighter moments to balance out the tension and drama though. Mads at the book fair was really entertaining to me! It sounds like a perfect day out to me!! I also really like that Davis is still remembered and talked about. So often in books where previous long-term partners have passed away they just seem to get swept under the rug, and that's just not realistic behaviour, so for Davis to be remembered and talked about so freely and positively is a breath of fresh air.
I'm sad to be leaving these characters but I've really enjoyed their journey and I'm really happy with how everything is at the end of the book.

This is the third book in the series, and I recommend reading the books in order. I love Jay’s writing style; she’s done a wonderful job with this story once again. Once I started listening, I couldn’t put the audiobook down. That was partly due to the story itself, and partly thanks to Gary Furlong, who is absolutely fantastic as the narrator.
Madigan and Nick won my heart in the first two books, and I was really looking forward to this third one.
First of all, it’s hard to find books with older characters—that’s the case here, and I really appreciate it! And then it’s also super hard to start a new relationship when you’re over fifty. The problems depicted here were portrayed realistically, and I loved how both Nick and Madigan deal with the challenges of their relationship. They’re there for each other, and despite their traumas, they keep choosing each other. Nick’s loyalty is unwavering, and Madigan is vulnerable yet strong. These two are a couple I’ll remember for a long time.
Nick’s mother reappears in his life after having left him when he was young. He has always wondered what became of her. But now the question arises: is he ready to listen to her?
And just when everything seems to be going well, strange things start happening that make Nick and Madigan sit up and take notice. They start their own investigation and realize that not everything is as it seems. I thought the Fischer and Church series was great, and I’ll definitely listen to it again, because I loved this series.

This is the third book in the series, and I recommend reading the books in order. I love Jay’s writing style; she’s done a wonderful job with this story once again. Once I started listening, I couldn’t put the audiobook down. That was partly due to the story itself, and partly thanks to Gary Furlong, who is absolutely fantastic as the narrator.
Madigan and Nick won my heart in the first two books, and I was really looking forward to this third one.
First of all, it’s hard to find books with older characters—that’s the case here, and I really appreciate it! And then it’s also super hard to start a new relationship when you’re over fifty. The problems depicted here were portrayed realistically, and I loved how both Nick and Madigan deal with the challenges of their relationship. They’re there for each other, and despite their traumas, they keep choosing each other. Nick’s loyalty is unwavering, and Madigan is vulnerable yet strong. These two are a couple I’ll remember for a long time.
Nick’s mother reappears in his life after having left him when he was young. He has always wondered what became of her. But now the question arises: is he ready to listen to her?
And just when everything seems to be going well, strange things start happening that make Nick and Madigan sit up and take notice. They start their own investigation and realize that not everything is as it seems. Omg I’m so glad the author took us back. I absolutely loved the first two books in the series and they were perfection but this is what building an HEA looks like. This is the swoon, boy I love Mads and Nicky.
This might be my favourite book of the series and that is no small feat since the first two are exceptional.
The emotional growth and solidifying of their connection beyond what we saw in the first tow books is the bedrock of this love story. It takes off exactly where the last book took off and the two are challenged on dealing with quite the crisis that Nicky is facing reconnecting with his past, accepting how he may even after all these years have central issues around self worth to work through and the anger and hurt that have been bound into his very being.
They are also again, completely unexpectedly embroiled in a dangerous game of life and death where things seem suspicious from the get go.
This is fast paced intrigue and action and there is no time for mistakes. These two must be a team if they are to come out on the other side.
I don’t want to give away the plot because that would spoil the experience entirely. Highly recommend starting this series if you havnt, it is spectacular

I really enjoyed the first two books in the Fisher & Church series and was looking forward to seeing how everything was wrapped up - and Jay certainly didn't disappoint! It was great to see Nick and Mads get the satisfying ending they deserved, although in true fashion, they (mostly Nick) took the craziest and most frustrating route to get there.
It's still great in general, too, to see a series devoted to middle-aged men who've gotten past the hangups and insecurities that come with the younger dating set, and who are willing to admit that they've still got some growing to do.
After their earlier adventures, Nick and Madigan are finally getting to that point where they can make decisions about their future together. One thing hanging over Nick, though, is the question of whether or not he wants to meet with his birth mother, who abandoned him as a child and has finally reached out to him after decades of silence.
I'll avoid spoiler territory here, but I did appreciate the storyline with Nick's mother. It felt realistic, without an immediate and easy resolution, as did Nick's feelings about her in general. It did involve Nick and Mads getting into yet another majorly sticky situation where at least one of them faced a life-threatening dilemma. The decision that got that person into that dilemma was frustrating but also typical for his character (at the time) and led to some hard-fought growth and understanding.
There were some great twists in this one, and though the happy ending was somewhat predictable, it was in a good way - exactly what I hoped would happen! It was also great to see the mentions of Davis, as well as getting to see more of the bookish side of Mads, which was an absolute delight. The usual supporting characters were still there as well, doing whatever they could to help get these guys to the ending they - and we - needed!

What a fabulous end to this couples trilogy. It tied up all the loose ends. I still totally love both of these men and think they are perfect for each other. The storyline had me hooked from the start and I stayed up to finish it. Unlike book 2 that I found really slow to start, this held my interest the whole time. I found that there was a good amount of steam despite the serious tone of the book. I would say it's pretty angsty. Not so much in their relationship but just with all the external drama even though I figured it would be a HEA.
I don't want to say too much to avoid spoilers but just when I think these 2 men are going to have their easy going romantic book and nothing more could possibly happen to them, they find themselves in trouble once again. In hindsight I wouldn't have had it any other way for them. The plot both didn't surprise me, I had a hunch at the start where it was going but then bam there's a twist at the end I was not suspecting. I got to read more by this author cause I found the writing wonderful and it's not too often I get a surprise.
The world building and side characters were fantastic as always. I love Gazza. Oh how I wanted to be a fly on the wall as they say in his off page moments. This is is the last book so sadly we probably won't be getting anymore info on him.
The narrator was fantastic. His accent was pleasant to listen to. He kept a good pace/flow. He expressed all the emotions wonderfully and brought the story to life. He gave all the characters including the side characters their own distinct voice that suited them all perfectly and made it easy to follow the story and it was a pleasure to listen to.

What a great way to end the trilogy of Nick and Mads, though I wish it had not concluded with just the three novels! I loved Jay Hogan's focus on suspense and action in this series, and the romance? Emotional support and connection galore, with the occasional steam. I don't need constant steamy scenes to prove the relationship is great and this story shows the strength of their love in so many other ways. Nick is raw and open to Mads about his traumatic childhood and fear of abandonment and Madigan is there for him to offload and offer emotional support at every turn.
The suspense came with Nick's reunion with his ailing mother Chloe, who had abruptly left him behind to cope with his wife-beating, controlling father when he was an impressionable child. No word from her for 47 years and then Chloe makes contact! But when they do meet during the couple's visit to the South Island for a book auction, it stirs up a whole kettle of emotions and uncovers trouble for Chloe that Mads and Nick weather (mostly together).
Nick and his mother's story are the central focus, but I was so happy to find a special carve-out in the plot for rare book lover Madigan. He's actually my favorite of the two guys because he's so low key and patient, a great listener, but with the fear that he's "boring" and just not enough. He so is enough and more!
I also love the cover! And the story's conclusion had all the good, happy vibes I needed. A truly enjoyable read. (Guess I've learned I like the drama and danger to give extra zest to the romance).

Jay Hogan truly put Nick and Madigan through the wringer in this trilogy, and I've loved to see their relationship develop and deepen throughout the stories. It was both nerve wracking and yet somewhat reassuring to see that Nick still had a talent of making a mess of things, despite his best intentions. He's had quite the emotional journey in this series, and been working on himself a lot - but he could still be reckless and I liked that Madigan didn't let him get away with it. Nick tested every ounce of Madigan’s patience, and while they were both stubborn and had their share of flaws, they were so supportive and tender with each other.
Seeing Nick reconnect with his mother was sweet, but also heartbreaking. It brought up a lot of past hurt and memories, but Madigan was with him every step of the way. I loved their communication in this story, there was a lot of vulnerability and tenderness, and it was easy to see how far they'd come in those moments.
The Promise of Together was an excellent ending to Nick and Madigan’s adventures, and I'm going to miss these two! It's certainly been an emotional rollercoaster, with enough suspense and high stakes to give me heart palpations. If you're into romantic suspense, I highly recommend this trilogy!

Luckily, Mads was there to help catch him. I love the dynamics of this couple. Nick is amazed to be given a second chance at love, and Mad's never thought he would find his soulmate.
I thought The Promise of Forever had to be tamer than the others, where both men nearly died. Yeah, you really need to be up to speed on their backstories.
Boy, was I foolish to think Ms. Hogan was going to go easy on us. This adrenaline-filled book details the awkward reunion of Nick and the mother who left him when he was a small boy. It also gives a clearer image of what makes Nick tick, and why there were times he was so impossibly infuriating.
So buckle up, readers. If you think a simple mother and son reconnection was going to be a walk in the park compared to their dealings with murderers and human traffickers, you will be amazed.

They’ve had to deal with a Nick’s grief and hot and cold nature. They’ve had to overcome outside threats while uncovering the truth of Nick’s husband’s death and navigating a new relationship. Book two saw them trying to right a wrong the unintentionally caused. And this book is all about Nick confronting the past that had made him the man he is today - still carrying the burn of his mother’s abandonment.
There’s a lot of baggage and Madigan has the patience of a saint. I loved this silver fox, a lifelong bachelor, fighting so hard for he and Nick. He’s there at Nick’s heartbreaking reunion with he mom as they try to repair decades of hurt. As mother and son try to rebuild love and trust after years apart, Madigan is there. It isn’t easy, but things worth having rarely are.
It’s really refreshing to read about two older MCs who still have a lot to figure out even as they have a great physical relationship.
They get their HEA - and it’s one heck of a a ride. And Nick finally lets go of the fear of abandonment he’s been clinging to most of his life. As their wonderful, amazing, ever evolving found family gathers to celebrate in the epilogue, it’s a beautiful thing.

THE PROMISE OF TOGETHER is the third and final installment in the Fisher & Church series. It should be read in order to get the full effect of the series.
Mads and Nick have been through it so far in their relationship. There's no shortage of excitement for these two. Nick knows he loves Mads but trusting him has taken a bit longer than it should. Nick has a host of baggage from his childhood he still carries with him. When he gets a letter from his estranged mother asking to see him he's unsure if that's something he wants. But of course Mads promises to be right by his side if he wants to confront her and close that chapter of his life. What they aren't expecting is a side of drama once they finally make it to her front door. Mads and Nick are now knee deep in finding out what is really going on with Nick's mother and why her stepson is slowly but surely emptying her bank account.
I didn't read this one but listened only and man does Gary Furlong do an amazing job narrating this series. I can honestly say this is my top audio book series so far. I got lost in the world Jay Hogan created every time I hit play!
