“Be kind. Or suffer the consequences.”

It’s been a while since I’ve read a really great thriller with a twist I genuinely didn’t see coming, and Something He Did definitely delivered.

Set in Melbourne, this is a fast paced Australian crime thriller with plenty of secrets, messy characters and lives that slowly start to cross in ways I wasn’t expecting. I really enjoyed following the different storylines and trying to work out where everything was heading. Needless to say, I was wrong.

The twist caught me completely off guard, which is always a win for me. There’s something so satisfying about getting to the end of a thriller and realising you haven’t worked it all out beforehand.

Even better, this is S K Lynch’s debut novel. I think she’s definitely one to watch, and I’ll be keeping an eye out for whatever comes next.

A really enjoyable, twisty Australian crime thriller and one that reminded me how much I love a good “Omg, I did NOT see that coming” moment.

I highly recommend.

Thank you Ultimo Press and S K Lynch for my early readers copy.

When the ARC cover tells you that this “Australian crime debut with the best twist you’ll read all year” , you have my attention.

I read a lot of crime books so my expectations were high. And you know what, the twist was jaw dropping! i did not see that coming and it made me question everything that I had already read. Well played SK Lynch.

This is a story of the fall out a car accident and subsequent road rage incident affects those involved. Nobody knows what is going on in a strangers life and your actions and words have consequences. It follows multiple characters before and after this event in both Melbourne and New Zealand. It is a tough story to say much more about, you just need to trust me when I say, you need to read this book.

It is dark and twisty, with short chapters that keep you on your toes. It covers some pretty intense subjects of addiction, domestic violence, family drama, and hidden secrets that can’t stay that way forever. Some of these characters really were playing with fire in more ways than one.

An impressive debut from an author to watch. Thank you to Ultimo Press for sending this one my way. It comes out in September 29th and deserves to be a hit.

Something He Did starts with a Melbourne road rage incident & sends the consequences in directions I definitely wasn’t expecting. Short chapters, multiple POVs & a rolling timeline made this ridiculously bingeable, and I absolutely inhaled it!

That smashed-up Nissan might be the catalyst, but this explores SO much more along the way. Addiction & the way addicts are viewed and believed, family dynamics, infidelity, secrets, social media, catfishing & who is really behind an online presence, life after cancer and the pull between career & family. I also really appreciated the difference in rugby union culture between NZ & Australia, and what happens when so much of your identity is tied to being somebody in one place… then suddenly not so much in another. There’s a surprising amount packed into this without it ever feeling overloaded.

The mysterious ‘You’ POV had me mentally cycling through the entire cast trying to work out who the hell ‘You’ was, while the multiple POVs & rolling timeline were never once hard to follow.

Ultimo Press weren’t wrong about there being a fab twist in this book either, because it actually hit me with a solid jaw-drop moment! When you read as many thrillers as I do, I’ll always appreciate one that can still catch me properly off guard. Such a strong Australian crime debut & one I absolutely loved!

I binged this book in a day. It came with me everywhere – in the car, to the café. I had it open on the kitchen bench-top as I cooked and in one hand as I ate. I was obsessed!

Something He Did by SK Lynch is like a rogue firework, and the car accident between a recovering addict and a famous rugby player at the start of the story is the spark that lights it. From there, I didn’t know where it was going and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, worrying about where it would land.

This is a book for the thinking thriller reader. It’s cryptic, clever and explosive. The twist at the end, oh my God! I never would have seen that coming.

The story is woven around three main threads with multiple POVs in alternating chapters. When those threads finally intersected and the pieces of the puzzle came together, I was so floored that I was turning back pages, whispering, 'hang on, what?!!'

The writing is brilliant, the characters are rich, complex and beyond messy. And even though it's heavy in trauma, chaos and the darker side of humanity, there's a lot of heart in this unforgettable and addictive story. Just brilliant! Highly recommend.

Woah, what a gripping, clever and suspenseful crime debut

Set in Australia and New Zealand, with a car accident causing ripple effect to its driver. When you really don’t know what’s going on in another persons life, and that split second choice can change everything

I don’t want to give anything away and will keep it brief, and say this is a MUST read!

I couldn’t put this page turner down, the multiple POVs, the red herrings - all perfectly placed and paced and had me needing to know the outcome!

And the ending - DID NOT SEE IT COMING!

I love a crime drama and this has set the bar high!!

Can’t wait to see what’s next for SK Lynch 🙌

Big thanks to Ultimo Press for sending us a copy to read and review.
An exciting new author has joined the fold of crime writing.
A story that has a jaw dropping twist is ready to be consumed.
An exciting and fast paced story that starts with a road rage incident that spirals like a slinky down steep stairs until a murky end.
Set between both Melbourne and New Zealand and differing timelines it is punctuated by short and sharp chapters that provoke quick page turning.
A kaleidoscope of themes that lead to bad, irrational and dangerous decisions filter through the narrative.
Themes explored include addiction, infidelity, catfishing and the haunts of social media.
A mix of characters of different backgrounds come together as the slinky unravels.
The sporting cultures of NZ and Australia revealed that a celebrity in one and an ordinary person in the other can shape the behaviour and attitude of the person.
An explosive and intriguing story that had me excited and a new author to add to my favourites.
Crime is ruling the roost and us readers can’t seem to get enough of it.

I devoured this in two sittings. Nothing quite like a thriller that makes you think you’ve got everyone figured out, only to prove you spectacularly wrong.

Set in Melbourne, Something He Did begins with a road rage incident and gradually unravels into something far more complicated. Multiple perspectives, overlapping lives, secrets, and a growing sense that absolutely nobody is telling the whole truth.

I particularly enjoyed the mysterious ‘You’ POV. I spent most of the book mentally running through the characters, convinced I’d worked out who was behind it. I hadn’t. Not even close.

And that twist! Bravo, S K Lynch. I read enough thrillers to be fairly sharp at spotting where they’re heading, so when an author manages to catch me completely off guard, I’m impressed.

What also worked was how cleverly the different storylines were woven together. The prose flows easily between perspectives, and the short chapters keep the pace moving without sacrificing the complexity of the plot. There’s quite a bit going on beneath the central mystery, particularly around identity, addiction, family relationships and the secrets people keep, both online and off.

For a debut, this is a seriously confident piece of crime writing. Lynch handles a complicated narrative without making it feel like hard work, and the suspense holds right through to the final reveal.

There’s something particularly satisfying about finishing a thriller and realising the author has been several steps ahead of you the entire time. Slightly irritating for my detective ego, but I’ll happily take it.

And I’m always especially grateful when a cracking book lands on my doorstep as an ARC. Discovering a new Australian author who can genuinely surprise me is a pretty good perk of this little bookish world.

Huge thanks to Ultimo Press and S K Lynch for the advance reader copy. What a treat!

I was so intrigued when this ARC landed on my doorstep, especially from an author I wasn’t familiar with, and with that huge claim splashed across the cover: “The Australian crime debut with the best twist you’ll read this year.” As someone who lives for crime and thriller novels - the twistier the better - I’ll admit I was a little sceptical. But the team at @ultimopress know their stuff, and I’m genuinely grateful they’ve introduced me to SK Lynch, who has absolutely knocked my socks off with Something He Did.

I’m going to stay deliberately vague because this is one of those books that works best when you go in knowing very little. What I can say is that it moves between Australia and New Zealand, and it all begins with one random traffic accident on a busy Melbourne street. Two strangers who should never have crossed paths suddenly do and what follows changes both their lives, and the lives of those around them, in ways that are unexpected, unsettling, and completely life altering.

This was so good I tore through half the book without even realising. The short chapters and cracking pace make it ridiculously addictive, and I finished it in two sittings - I honestly haven’t devoured a book like that in ages. Every time I thought I had the direction pegged, I was proven wrong and had to rethink everything. It takes a lot to keep things feeling fresh in the crime genre, but SK Lynch delivers with a clever, dark, and utterly addictive page turner.

There are some trigger warnings to be aware of, so it won’t be for everyone, but it was an absolute winner for me. If you love a dark, twisted story that keeps you guessing right up until the shocking reveal, this one deserves a spot on your TBR.

A huge thank you to @ultimopress and I cannot wait to see what SK Lynch writes next.

Holy heck! This pretty much blind-sided me.

I love a book that has multiple side stories to think about, and to try to string it all together so they match up. I seriously felt that a time-line board would have worked well with this one.

YOU WILL OUTWIT THEM ALL.
YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU WANT.
YOU WILL SHOW THEM.

Detective Sergeant Claudia Russo is a woman on a mission.
Searching for an 18 year old who has gone missing after an argument with her dad.
But Dad isn't giving Claudia the full story, she can sense it.
He seems just as worried about his double life being found out, as he his about his daughter.
Meanwhile someone has been following the daughter.....

Claudia understands secrets, she has a few of her own, and she is still grieving.
But this doesn't stop her chasing down the real story and getting closer to finding the daughter.

I thought I had it figured out at one point, but there is no way I saw what the final twist revealed. I still can't find the clues that may have exposed it.
I was right about one thing, but that ending blew me away!
THIS IS WHAT EXCITES ME WITH THRILLERS!

And now I am eagerly awaiting the next book: Something She Saw.

This was such an interesting and different take on a psychological thriller! I thoroughly enjoyed this one and flew through it in only a couple of days.

Something He Did explores how one road incident forever changes the lives of the two people involved, Amber Tompkins, a recovering addict running late for her child custody hearing, and Jake Mason, an ex-All Blacks captain with a huge attitude and toxic behaviours.

Told through alternating points of view, the author does a brilliant job of holding your attention throughout. I’m being super vague in this review because so much of the appeal is drawn from going in blind. Even the blurb doesn’t give anything away as to what this is actually about, which is the perfect way to approach it, going in with no idea where the story will lead you.

A really clever book and I’m super thankful to Ultimo Press for my copy. Can definitely recommend picking this one up and diving straight in!

SOMETHING HE DID - SK LYNCH

⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

Thank you @ultimopress for this incredible ARC copy!

I had some high expectations when I saw this cover and I can confidently say that I totally enjoyed it.

This book is told through multiple POVs and the whole time I was trying to think of how everything connects. When the twist happens, everything falls into place! The author cleverly connects all characters in a way I totally didn't expect!

Despite being a quick and twisty read, there is lots of character development. I feel that the characters were well thought out and their personalities and history played important parts in the story.

There are some very real issues and trauma explored in this book so definitely check trigger warnings ⚠️

Pick this book up if you want an addictive but serious thriller, that is heavy on character development and an unexpected twist 🔥

Wow!! This book is so good. Billed as the book with the best twist you'll read all year and a synopsis that drew me in, I was very keen to read this. It did not disappoint.

Told in a few POVs and across a few timelines, this story starts building from the start and doesn't let up. I found it easy to follow and the pacing is great.

This story poses the question of whether a single incident, and how the participants handle themselves, can either derail a life or save it.

And the twist? Well, I thought I'd hit it, but believe me there are a couple and one that I don't think many would see coming.

There's a small excerpt from the sequel and I for one am excited for that.

Another outstanding thriller debut from an Aussie author.

This was heading towards a 3-star read for me until everything started coming together in the last 40 pages.

It was definitely an addictive read, and while I enjoyed the individual characters, for much of the book they felt quite loosely connected. Then, suddenly, those threads began to come together, and the final part of the book completely changed how I viewed everything that came before it.

A slow build, but one that ultimately paid off. The last 40 pages were exactly what I needed to bring it all together.

A hypnotic read. Multiple POV's, and alternating timelines. I have to confess, the timelines were confusing me in the early part of the read, but stick with it, dear readers, you'll work it out along the way.

A road rage incidents sets the two drivers onto very different paths. For one driver, their world changes for the better. For the other, their world spirals tragically downwards.

A thought provoking read, the story takes you in directions you are unlikely to see coming. Very cleverly crafted, and I highly recommend this one.

Loved this book! It’s always a treat to read a novel which is set in your own city, something that is not a common occurrence, for Melbournians. This book was additionally satisfying because it was well articulated and constructed including a clever twist, which I did not see coming. The writing had me hooked from beginning to end trying to guess which of the characters could have been responsible.
I can’t wait to read more from this author.

A sad and sordid and awfully compelling debut crime fiction novel set in Melbourne and Christchurch NZ. Takes a bit of concentration to follow the different characters as first but you soon get them all. Themes of drug addiction, domestic violence, sexual promiscuity, and also trying to deal with the trauma of abuse; and the struggles of police interacting with it all. Through it, theres a sense of battling the instinct to lash out and trying for redemption and self-understanding.

Not all us Kiwis care about the All Blacks, or any other sports for that matter.

Anyway...the tale. Seemed to be not so twisty if you ask me. I detest cops with problems in mysteries. This had to top all of those I've come across so far. A really stupid reason to do such a thing.
Not impressed with this book.

This is my first ever crime read and wow what a book to start with, it got me really good, I had no clue what was going to happen and it truely was the best twist I've read! The differing POVs, the duel timelines, I thought it was an epic read! Thanks Ultimo Press!!

This is a real page turner set in Melbourne and Queenstown involving a former All Blacks captain. It is a crime thriller but also explores why good people do bad things and the consequences of their actions. The premise was a bit far fetched for me but it did buzz along and was well written.

When the ARC cover told me this is ‘the Australian crime debut with the best twist you’ll read this year’ I just couldn’t ignore a claim like that… and thankfully this one really did live up to the hype!

Centred around an incident and the fallout that follows this is the kind of thriller that kept making me question what I thought I knew with every single page turn. There were plenty of moving pieces, secrets and little breadcrumbs along the way with that big question of what actually happened hanging over everything.

The timeline was definitely something I had to keep an eye on. There were specific days to track and I did struggle a little to keep everything straight at times, but the payoff made the effort worthwhile.

This was also a very unique writing style that took some getting used to but the short, sharp words were full of so many twists. Just when I thought I had things figured out, the story always had another little trick up its sleeve.

For a debut this is seriously impressive. It’s dark, gripping and has exactly the kind of twisty Australian crime energy that makes me want to immediately hand it to everyone who loves a good “WAIT… WHAT?!” moment.

A big thank you to Ultimo Press for sharing this one with me that is out at the end of September.
