A contemporary slice-of-life comedy about a hotshot young Japanese calligrapher who gets himself informally exiled to a rural southern Japanese island for punching out an elderly critic at an exhibition. A sheltered city boy by upbringing, Handa-sensei gets his head, and his art, gradually back together through interactions with his lively village neighbors. Having known little about calligraphy (or island life), but a lot about artists and writers, I found it both a stitch and informative.

I almost dubbed it "sweet", but that's not right. "Kind, thoughtful, closely observed," perhaps.

As usual, I tracked back from the anime, comprised of 12 episodes closely following the first few volumes of what is now apparently a 12-volume manga series, with a 4-volume spin-off following the protagonist in his high school days. The anime felt rounded and complete.

Have read volumes 1 and 2 so far, and watched all 12 of the anime episodes. Clean, clear art style.

Recommended.

The art style is great, it’s clean, clear, and well-detailed. I really liked seeing the contrast of city vs country life through the eyes of Handa, which is done by way of living and the side characters. With the culture differences of moving from city to country, it shows Handa’s character growth because he starts to realize his mistakes and starts to accept them. All of the characters were fun and entertaining to watch especially Naru and all of her school pals. And the story felt very realistic like this is something normal that can be seen in real life. Overall, I thought this was a fun story and I can’t wait to see Handa and Naru’s friendship continue to grow.

This manga reminded me of Yotsuba&! in a lot of ways, mostly because of Naru (the little girl on the cover).

This story follows Handa, a calligrapher who moves to a small rural town on an island. He meets a first grader named Naru, a hyperactive kid who just won't give up her "secret base" (the house he recently moved in to). The two make for an entertaining pair.

This is slice of life at its finest, and I highly recommend it. Especially if you liked Yotsuba&!

My first book for Women in Translation Month in August is ‘Barakamon‘ by Satsuki Yoshino. I got it as a birthday present from one of my favourite friends. I read the first part of this multiple volume Manga comic series which has been translated by Krista Shipley and Karie Shipley.

Barakamon tells the story of a young twenty-something calligrapher, Seishuu Handa. He is successful though he is young, having won many awards for his work. But he loses it when an elderly man criticizes his work and Handa knocks this critic down. Overnight, he becomes a person to be avoided by the calligraphy community. To recover from this, he takes a break and moves to an island. He thinks that the island will be calm and he can practice calligraphy in peace till things become better at home. Unfortunately, he hasn’t reckoned with the islanders. They are curious and intrusive, they walk into his home whenever they feel like it and he discovers that some children have established a base at his home for hanging out and playing games. This annoys him no end and disturbs his peace. But gradually he warms up to the islanders, because they have big hearts and help him when he is in need. Naru, a young girl who is in elementary school, becomes his best friend, always hangs out at his place and is his guide to the ways of life is the island. The experiences and adventures that Handa and Naru have, form the rest of the book.

I loved ‘Barakamon‘ for the way it contrasted city life and island life through the eyes of Handa. I also loved the charming island characters. My favourite character was Naru – she was really cool and awesome, always smiling and always upto something. There were no bad characters in the story and there were no black-and-white situations, and this made the story very realistic, which I loved very much.

In some places I found the translation odd – for example one of the characters said ‘Sonny‘ and many of the characters said ‘Yer‘. I am sure they did not speak that way in Japanese. But there was a note at the end of the book which said that people in that island spoke a dialect which was different from the Japanese spoken in cities and because the translators wanted to highlight that, they used words like this. I was happy to read that explanation, because it shone light on the challenges of translating dialect from one language to another.

I was also reading a Manga comic after a long time and it was an interesting experience to read from the back to the front and read the graphic panels and the dialogues from the right to the left. It annoyed me no end at the beginning, and I frequently found myself reading it the ‘wrong’ way, but at some point I got used to the Manga way and it was fun.

I loved the first part of ‘Barakamon‘. I can’t wait to read the second part.

Have you read ‘Barakamon‘? What do you think about it? Do you like Manga comics?

Beautifully executed slice of life.

World: The art is solid, it’s a bit simple in the line work but the characters, especially Naru, are emotive and that goes a long way for me. The world building is small and contained. It’s a small Japanese village and this book feels small and intimate with the tone and the setting making readers feel transported. I like it.

Story: Wonderfully paced and written slice of life, coming of age, life lessons manga. It’s very basic in it’s design but the emotions are done well and the lessons and the small little things about life is portrayed beautifully. Simple lessons and simple beautiful emotions. There is a nice balance between the emotions and the fun and zany nature of Naru, it’s really well done.

Characters: The cast of characters are solid, they are not very deep and really serve the purpose of the story so far but they have wonderful personal voice. Naru of course is great and her personality is a great foil for the story.

A really well done slice of life that will make you smile and focus on the little things in life.

Onward to the next book!

"Because there's nuthin' anythin's fun".

After reading/enjoying Volumes 2-5...I though reading Vol 1 might be a good idea.

Energetic child Naru is introduced as Handa nervously circles her ..at first.

I do enjoy the slightly adult comments thrown in here and there.

The essence of manga is exaggeration. Men with swords taller than them, preteen superheroes, all kinds of bodies which couldn’t be, all kinds of facial expressions and gesticulations which didn’t exist until they memed themselves into real life. But you can exaggerate anything, it doesn’t have to be combat or sensuality. There’s one about being a better chess player, one about being a better baseball player, one about being a better farmer, one about being a better teacher. All treated with high drama, extreme closeups, and OTT declarations. War against one’s own lack of skill and character. So there is nothing inherently surprising about Barakamon, an exaggerated portrayal of a disgraced calligrapher and his attempt to personalise his art.

Calligraphy is itself an exaggeration, paying excessive attention to a functional thing, writing. I don’t mean that as criticism: most of what’s good in the world comes because someone took something way too seriously.

Naru isn’t as cute as Yotsuba, and Handa isn’t as driven or distinctive as Mashiro. Still nice, still good-looking, still the kind of heightening of the ordinary we need.

Naru is super adorable and lovable! The male MC, however, is not. Even if this one of the many predictable stories of a rude, city guy coming to a country town where one of the locals gives him a heart, the brunt of this volume was him being a dick to children (and the elderly). I didn't find anything likable about him here and I'd rather read something else for now. I'm not sure if I'll read the next volume. *shrug*

Mudah-mudahan saja begitu.

Eccentric, successful, young and a very urban calligrapher, Handa Seishu, finds himself in a small island village after an incident where he punches an elderly calligraphic critic for criticizing his work to be very conformist and rigid. In one night, he becomes a person who is hated in calligraphy community. He is sent to the village to the island village so he can calm himself down and to take a break.

Handa is greeted with a vast cultural difference on the island compared to what he was used to in the city. Essentially a bad-tempered person, Handa finds the intrusive and curious crowd (or lack there-off) of the island annoying. They regularly interfere with his calligraphy practice. The main interferer is the local scamp Naru (who is very adorable and very irritating) supported by a range of funny and weird chracters.

As these stories go, Handa grows fond of them slowly and begins to realize his mistakes and evolves as a person and a calligraphist. Despite the very cliché setting and story progression, it was a very fun and refreshing read. Comedy is the main essence of this Manga with friendship and familial bonding as extra flavors.

Despite his bad personality, Handa grows on you as a reader much like how he grows on the villagers who just can't seem to leave him alone. His earnest, straight-forward and hard-working nature when mixed with his confused state of mind and quick temper results in very a many hilarious situations.

Stop me if you've heard this one before -- an upstart calligrapher is exiled to a tiny, rural island after punching a calligraphy master who gave him harsh criticism. On the island, he tries to focus on improving his work, but constant interruptions from his neighbors prevent him from getting anywhere, particularly a group kids who are annoyed that he's moved into the abandoned house they'd been using as a secret base.

Totally cliche, I know. There are, like, a dozen stories about exiled calligraphers putting up with crazy rural folks, so who needs another one.

I'm giving this the benefit of the doubt, but it had better start building to something soon. I have a soft spot for boundlessly energetic children with no sense of boundaries (IN FICTION ONLY) so I liked this all the way through, but it sort of meandered, and without Naru's charisma, I don't think I'd have made it. So it's got a lot of appeal, but I'd like to see more depth from the other characters.

Barakamon follows a young and handsome calligrapher named Seishuu Handa (a.k.a. Sensei) who, after a mishap at a calligraphy contest reception, is sent off by his father to a small island off the coast of Japan. There he tries to focus and improve upon his work, while adapting to rural life and living with his noisy neighbours.

I picked up Barakamon because I loved the anime when it first aired, and I wanted to revisit the story. This is very much a slice-of-life story, and nothing overly exciting happens throughout the volume, but it is a lot of fun seeing Sensei's interactions with the other characters and learning their customs. Naru and Sensei's relationship is particularly sweet, and she really helps balance out his serious character. I'm expecting this series to get funnier in the next few instalments because I remember it being quite a laugh. I also just really love the premise here, and seeing Sensei's calligraphy. Yoshino's art style reminds me a bit of Takeshi Obata's, so do with that what you will.

Sukaaaaaaaaaaa~~~ <3 <3 <3 Ngakak-ngakak saya bacanya!

This series is heartwarming, funny, and puts me in a really good mood. The anime is just as good and everyone who found interest in the manga should check it out. I feel like a lot of people can really relate to Handa considering how we all struggle with finding our own pace when it comes to life. The lessons he learns are some that we should all take into consideration. It's honestly just a really well done story that I believe everyone should take a look at.

A young Handa Seishu is one of the most succesful & profesional young calligrapher, despite his age.One day, when a exhibition is held and one of handa calligrapher was in there, one of elderly currator insulting his calligraphy boring, bland, and being too unoriginal.Angry, seishu then punch him.

After his dick move, his father sends him off into Goto island,a little island near kyushu.Handa thinks that the island will do the job for him for calm down. Then, his discover about the local villager on that island always have curiosity & want to interact more with Handa. After the "secret" encounter, handa become annoyed with them, assume that they will disturbe his work.Including Naru,a six year old young girl who still on first grade in local elementary school.

After several encounter,Handa will learn how unique and colorful the local villager are.

Now this,is how you start a great manga.Satsuki Yoshino make all the character from handa, naru and other villager extremely cute, original, and likeable.I found the interaction between them always warm my heart, how they describe the life in big city and comparing them to life in a little island.

Think i'm gonna grab 5 more volume before new year eve

Seishuu Handa is a young Calligrapher who moves to an island on the west side of Japan after he punched the director in the face. He then is known as 'sensei' on the island. He knows needs to learn the ways of the outside city with the help of Naru a first grader to show him how it's done. And all to show the director that his work is not plain dull and get inspired. This manga was very funny and light-hearted manga. Due to its style and story line.

I really recommend it to you! The story is wonderful and characters are soooo fascinating. Also the dialogue is spoken by people who live in Goto island is cool. I want to speak the dialogue as them. If you interested in about this manga, you should watch animation version.

A slice of life manga one can speed through. I would suggest taking it slow just like Sensei. Naru is a bundle of annoyance and joy.

Makes one feel good. I would probably take the first ferry out to the island.
