I absolutely loved this book! This is the second book I’ve read by Avery McDougall, and honestly, after Invisibly Grace, I didn't think it could get any better...but I was so very wrong.
Stockholm Syndrome *NOT is absolutely packed with sass. The humour reminded me of why I loved Butcher and Blackbird by Brynne Weaver so much, (just without the accidental cannibalism and puppitering of corpses.) It had me giggling out loud or snorting a few times that my husband actually stopped to ask what was funny.
This book is truly the definition of an unputdownable page turner, life kept trying to get in the way, but I just didn't want to stop reading.
It’s the first book in a long time that I’ve flown through in just three days. (Bonus points for the incredibly helpful translation pages in the back for the Italian and Russian phrases, though noted that not all the translations came up on kindle for the Russian phrases)
The characters completely stole my heart.
The Chosen Family:
Gio and Matthew are the absolute best big mafia brothers anyone could ask for, though I'd never trust them to get the right things from the shop.
Nonna is terrifying, yet somehow so wholesome at the same time.
Drea is a total badass, and her and Dimi are hands-down the cutest arranged marriage couple ever. And I do love Drea & Davide's brother sister relationship, so very supportive.
Nadia: I loved her so much, even though I related a little too much to her struggles with self-worth. It was so refreshing to have a female main character in a mafia romance who isn't just arm candy. She has so much substance even if she is literally the worst prisoner ever...which also kind of makes her the best.
There were moments in this book that had me straight-up squealing and kicking my legs like a teenager. Davide is really something else. The moment he said "My perfect treasure"? OMG, absolute swoon!
I’ve actually taken a big step back from the romance genre over the last six months because so many books lately feel like they're practically porn without any substance. Because of that, I was honestly a bit hesitant going into this one but it completely blew away my expectations.
The spice was tasteful and didn't overwhelm the plot at all. Switching perspectives between Nadia and Davide with every chapter change added a whole other layer to the plot, and the banter as mental foreplay was perfect and so very them as a couple.
This book has incredible substance, amazing character dynamics, and hilarious moments, like big, scary mafia men being utterly terrified of three children under five.
Lastly, "Butterfly" is officially the sweetest pet name for a daughter ever.
