Thirteen-year old Ewin Poorliver lives in a town called Evertree, located in the mysterious valley Hidden Secrets. One day, while he is hunting, his life changes forever. He is assaulted by several mysterious creatures who are very powerful, and Ewin only escapes due to a strange magic force that he doesn't even understand. This same force leads him to a valuable item, the Essence of Power. Ewin steals this, and, when the rest of the town discovers what he has done, Ewin runs away from home. From there, he, after a series of bad choices, finds himself in the dwarf capital, Rockwind. But, the mysterious creatures are angry that Ewin escaped their grasp, and they fight back. They send an army of possessed trolls and they destroy Rockwind. No, Ewin is convicted of causing this, and now, as a punishment, he, and a dwarf named Omix, are sent into exile, only allowed to return when they have driven away all of the mysterious creatures that started it all. From then on, Ewin and Omix meet more beings then they knew existed, fight more evil than they could ever perceive, and go on an epic journey to redeem their names

I am honored to be the first (and maybe last) person to rate this book on Goodreads.

It was an absolutely brilliant book (given that it was written by a middle schooler). I can give it nothing but 5 stars (that has nothing to do with my personal connection to the author). I honestly don’t know why it’s not a classic already. Oliphant should absolutely write more books for his millions of potential fans out there.
