"What do you want from us?" Billy screamed. "Your life! Wherever you go on this planet, my creatures will be waiting to kill you," replied Ruger. "Not if I kill you first!" After surviving a series of attacks from dangerous creatures, Billy Brock finally encounters his nemesis, the evil wizard Ruger and learns that the attacks are no coincidence. With the help of his friends, Billy must find a way to put Ruger on the defensive in their quest for survival, while dealing with the distractions of heartbreak.
I’m at odds to review this book. I enjoyed it, by the end, and I will read the next in the series, but I feel like I have to dissect my reading experience:
To me this has a pulpy, retro vibe that feels like old sci fi: Straightforward characters with clear motivation and lots of twists with aliens, dinosaurs and other creatures keep it fun. That said, stock-ish characters and very black and white morals might throw off a reader.
Positives
The story is a cool concept and there is lots of action. As a result things are rarely dull.
Despite a lot of characters being introduced over the course of the book, I had zero trouble remembering who was who due to their succinct introductions.
The action scenes are also easy to understand, which can be a deal breaker with many books.
Negatives: Too many adverbs.
Everything is over explained: A woman kicks off her pumps and the author feels the need to parenthetically add (shoes) and I felt talked down to.
Every time anyone jokes in the book the writing then tells us they are joking ; there are lots of things like that. It made me feel like it didn’t trust the reader and pulled me out of the story for a long time, until I learned to accept it. That said, for people who don’t get context clues or have trouble inferring subtext, this might be a major plus!
The hero is also one of those moody dumb dumbs who acts without thinking, barely survives but seems to be able to do everything really well. Also: every single woman in the book lusts for him. It’s not an unfamiliar trope but one I’ve not encountered in a bit. After a while it gets a little ridiculous
To sum up:
This is pulpy, popcorn reading with swords and creatures and death defying escapes. I applaud the audacity with how quickly characters learn skills, tame beasts, fall in love and recover from injuries. It’s fun but completely unreal to the point of feeling like a myth. If that sounds like your idea of a good time, go for it!
I got this book at a comic convention from a local(ish) author. I bought it because it was supposed to be about time travel, which I love, and I really like supporting local authors. I liked the overall story, however there were a few things that bugged me. First of all, the novel felt more post-apocalyptic as opposed to a time travel story...which was fine, just a little disappointing. I think the author did great on the world building as well as the action. The story was gripping and moved at a good pace. I felt like the dialogue between the characters was a little weak at times....a little forced sounding, maybe? I also got annoyed with the female characters in this book. Every female was obsessed with the main guy, and they were all a little weepy. It felt unrealistic. This is the first in a trilogy and I will definitely be reading the other books.
