Cold Echo
As a homicide detective working murders, Hank Trescott listened for the voice within the case. At some point, he’d hear what he called the “Echo,” the voice of the case speaking back to him. But after leaving the force to care for his terminally ill wife, he left that life behind. After her loss, Hank was in search of purpose, but finding it proved more elusive than he expected. During a fateful trip to a quaint, smalltown bookstore, Hank was posed a question by local officer, Julie Haywood, “Would you help me solve a twenty-five-year-old murder?”
Crystal Daws was shot to death after leaving her job one night at the Woodard Theatre. Officer Haywood had a personal interest in the case; Crystal was her beloved cousin. It was because of her death that Julie had become an officer.
Reluctant at first, but hoping it would lead to a new purpose, Hank took on the case. Alongside Officer Haywood, Hank uncovers some smalltown secrets that were thought to be long since buried. Together they listened for the echo of Crystal’s murder, the COLD ECHO.

Author William Mark’s prologue piqued my interest and the first chapter set the hook. Main character Hank Trescott, a retired homicide detective, spends his days taking care of his terminally ill wife, the love of his life. When she peacefully passes, Hank is faced with the real-life dilemma of what does life’s next chapter look like.
At the urging of his daughter, Hank explores several different possibilities but none catch on. Until a chance meeting with a small-town cop, Julie Haywood, who’s been trying to solve a 25-year-old homicide, the victim was her best friend.
Hank agrees to help her and the hunt is on. The story is fast paced but also filled with great dialogue between Hank and Julie. Not just the next investigative steps, but personal thoughts. The characters and story are all easy to like and feel for but also believable.
While some technology is involved in solving the case, it’s primarily “boots on the ground,” talking with people, putting the pieces and story together, and that “Cold Echo.” For me, it was just old-fashioned good police work and I liked it.
This is William Mark’s first book in several years and I’m glad he’s back. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to more.
