The Fourth Wife is an unforgettable read filled with adventure, heartache, friendships, and love, all set against beautifully vivid England and Scotland landscapes. The story pulled me in from the very beginning, and I found it incredibly hard to put down. The strong female characters added such an empowering “girl power” element to the story, showing resilience, courage, and deep loyalty through every challenge they faced. The characters were compelling, the emotions felt real, and the twists kept me eager to see what would happen next. Highly recommend for anyone who loves historical fiction with emotion and adventure!

**EBOOK**

I have a lot of thoughts. I always enjoy the passion that a debut author brings to their works and it was enjoyable to see that at work here. I feel like the transformation from Alison’s starting point with her mom and the bird was encouraging.

Good: I loved Mary! While her initial play and assumptions with the tea was a bit bold for the setting I also think she is my favorite character.

Turning point: The journey from her mad escape to her eventual return was a little bit much. Granted I have never made a such a journey and I do not know the actual statistics of dangerous encounters on such a trip. My only real complaint here was the Henry portion. I tagged this for spoilers so if you are still reading you have been warned.

The pirates: It just felt really unnecessary. I get that it was part of giving Allison closure or some such but, it was just so beyond unlikely and I almost stopped reading because of it. If she had never received that last cryptic letter she would not have needed this part and it did not add anything to the story progression.

Upside: I really liked meeting Robert and Jane! They were lovely and I would invite them to dinner for sure! I do wish they had been a little more honest with them but I get it. The odd turn here was, in all the prep for the visit…they never went over the guest list…seems unlikely. But at least their clothes were on point! Still curious about the land deal.

Overall, a solid read. I look forward to seeing this author grow.

The Fourth Wife was very much a debut novel, however, I enjoyed it! This was a book that I did keep picking up to find out more about Allison's story, so it definitely sucked me in.

I think I got debut novel vibes because at moments, the writing felt rushed or that it skipped over details. But on the other hand, this kind of brought one of my favorite things about the book. That would be that Allison ACTUALLY ran immediately. I feel like in other novels, you sit through the planning and keep asking the character "Hey, why haven't you left yet? That was the PERFECT moment." Not Allison, she did the basics and ran immediately. It was so refreshing!

I will say, the pirates did throw me a little. I honestly thought that this would be a great thing for Allison and William, because how in the world can Arthur find them out at sea with Pirates? Instead they were just brought back to Scotland, so that was a bit disappointing.

I did love many of the side characters: Mary (who I secretly hope is actually a witch... I know she says she isn't, but come on, Arthur DID seem cursed), Robert and Jane. Such bright characters in an otherwise dark universe for Allison.

I'm excited to see what else the author has to offer as she keeps writing! This was a solid first novel!

This book is a great mix of historical romance and suspense. Allison is easy to root for as she struggles through a dangerous marriage and finds unexpected comfort with a Scottish man with a troubled past. Their romance feels heartfelt and genuine, and the tension throughout the story kept me engaged. Dark, emotional, and sometimes funny, I really enjoyed this read.
