psychologically torture, on page endangerment of a MC by a MC, betrayal, death of a parent, bribery, blackmail, death threats, a shooting
Second chance full of revenge, hate, and PAIN. AKA: it HURT! This is more about the ability to survive in the fog of loathing. Of years of believing the wrong people, and the deepest darkest lies. But the connection between Jude and Lilah is very much real! Which only made it hurt more. (The Count of the Monte Cristo was the PERFECT touch and made it hurt just a little less.) Childhood best friends ripped apart by lies from loved ones. Only to be reunited by the an unsuspecting piece of the game. NOTHING is as it seems, to either of them. Or to the reader. But I knew enough to know who I preferred to no longer be on the land of the living. There’s so much pain between Jude and Lilah. And at some point, tightly sealed and buried emotions are bound to explode. And boy do they!
As much as I enjoyed this book, Jude and Lilah’s story felt both finished and unfinished. Have they actually worked things out? Are they healed enough to properly be together? And most importantly… is this story finished? Or do I have to read book 2? Because this storyline felt finished, but it also bleeds into the next one. So does that mean so does Jude and Lilah’s relationship? I mean, either way I plan to read it. I just wish the end of this one felt more complete.

This was a very clever story full of intensity and turns that you might have not seen...
Jude was seeking revenge, Lilah was seeking peace...
These two had lots of history behind and they were bound to a new game that was leading to the Dean's List!!!
Can they found out the truth behind all this secrecy and can they found redemption at the end???

I normally like this author, even her darker, crazier books, but this one just didn't do it for me. I had to sludge my way through 25% before I giving up. I had a hard time connecting with the characters, kinda wanted to know how both of them were manipulated and I'm sure got back at the person who did it, but was so bored while reading, it wasn't enough to keep me going. In the end this one wasn't for me.

This is a well written story, which has angst, determination, good girl / bad boy, opposites attract, kidnapping, lies, suspense, intrigue, touch her and die vibes, stalking, secrets, mistaken identity, enemies / lovers, high stakes, vengeance, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, tragic, twisted, and unpredictable, dark academia, new adult romance.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

What a wild, tangled web of deception!
This book hooked me from the very beginning and I read it every chance I got to see what happened next. There’s so many lies, betrayals, just pure unadulterated psychological torment and I’m glad I was here for it.
Lilah and Jude have been best friends for years but it’s beginning to blossom into more and everything changes in the course of one night. She must start over and try to trek through her grief for the next 7 yrs when once again, she’s right on the cusp of graduating college, starting her life and everything gets turned upside down again!
The emotions run strong in this one along with some tense anxiety.
If you like wealthy families and their dirty laundry you will love this!

I was really intrigued by the premise, and the mystery surrounding the Dean’s List definitely kept me reading. The story is fast-paced, but at times it moved too fast, which left me confused more often than not.
While I enjoyed uncovering the secrets alongside the characters, there were quite a few plot holes and unanswered questions that made the ending feel a little incomplete for me. Overall, it wasn’t the best dark academia romance I’ve read, but it was still an okay read if you’re looking for a quick, drama-filled story.

Considering how short this was.. I wizzed through it & loved it. I guess I wanted more from their past life which would have made me have more of a connection with the characters BUT the plot was plotting & took over from that.

I really enjoyed this story. The characters and plot was great. It was an interesting story line and the ending caught me off guard in a good way. My only complaint was it seemed like the wrong copy was published, there was no chapters to reference back to and minor editing errors that would be easy to fix. But great story and I can't wait to read the next one.

The Dean’s List by Rachel Van Dyken is a psychological thriller set in a dark academia world. It is a complex and intriguing romance between Lilah (Delilah) and Jude Hale. Every story has two sides and this is definitely the case for these two. They were best friends who were just about to cross the line into being lovers until an incident ruined their lives. When the depth of the secrets, lies and deception is uncovered, can they ever find a way back to each other and accept the truth. If you have enough money you can get away with anything but add power and it becomes a lethal mix which had devastating consequences for this couple.
Their romance is layered with emotional trauma, unresolved sexual tension and feelings that have never gone away. He used to be her hero but now he’s her enemy on a revenge mission. Their love has turned into a war full of regret and guilt, betrayal and heartbreak so who will come out the victor. Years ago he said he was going to marry her someday because she was the love of his life, but does he still feel the same? Not knowing all the facts has shaped them into the people they are now.

One learning her professor has been cheating on her with other students and the second is how has the love of her life miraculously returning from the dead.
Jude has spent those seven years planning his revenge for what he went through. Her heartbreaking lies and betrayal shattered their friendship and his love for her. He managed to survive but is out for retribution, he suffered so he’s going to make her pay. He also plans to annihilate his dads empire for the path he made him take.He has been patiently watching her and waiting for the best opportunity to make her pay for her sins, infiltrating her life without her knowing.
Her father had told her Jude has died so she had no idea he’d gone to prison. Her dad had got a new job and they left town immediately after his funeral. Did they fake his death and if so whose funeral was it? She’s so confused as nothing makes sense, what the hell is going on and is she missing something. She’d always thought she was protecting Jude because she’d seen what had really happened that night. Was she a coward not to stand up for what was right. She destroyed his life so unless she can get him to hear her side, he will destroy her life but seeing him has brought back all her feelings him. The boy she loved has gone and been replaced by a bitter and angry young man who hates her. Now as the accusations fly she’s terrified of the truth.
Jude is convinced she is lying again because if she’s not, then his revenge is wasted and it’s been the only thing that has kept him alive. He thought it would give him closure but what she tells him could break him. All he thought he knew has changed so he takes it out on her so she can understand what he has experienced. I liked the flashbacks to their childhood friendship and how he trusted and loved her. We find out what happened when she testified and what Jude went through in Prison. It turns out they were controlled and manipulated by his father but did her father have a hand in proceedings and if so what were the consequences of his actions. Were both their families involved.
I thought her roommate Charlie was a great character, a whirlwind but very supportive. His cousin Axel was funny and I liked his interactions with Charlie. The twists and turns with these two were great and gave us lots to think about while Jude and Lilah deal with all their problems and work through their feelings for each other. The revelations about her job and the links back to Jude was really clever. All hell breaks loose when it’s revealed The Deans List actually exists. Who has the list and are they behind bringing the couple back together. Is history going to repeat itself or can they solve the mystery. Hidden identities, deadly threats and more heart breaking revelations and trauma bring things to an exciting and dramatic end. It does finish in a cliffhanger for Axel and left me with lots of questions I hope are answered in the next book.

There were a few plot threads that felt unanswered, though Lilah and Jude's story reaches a resolution that feels complete enough while still leaving the door open for more of their story in book two, which will focus on Axel and Charlie. Jude and Lilah's story thoroughly destroyed my heart on every single page. They are literal soulmates, but years of manipulation, lies, and betrayal tore them apart. Lilah is such a fascinating contradiction. On one hand, she’s vulnerable, bleeding-hearted, and drowning in guilt, grief, and shame. But on the other hand, she shows incredible, resilient strength when facing Jude’s animosity.
Sometimes the "miscommunication" trope can be a slippery slope, but RVD handled it brilliantly here. Because it’s layered with heavy suspense and genuine danger, the angst feels earned and completely devastating.
This book was heartbreaking, soul-shattering, and so beautifully executed. It completely took my soul out. We still have so many questions left unanswered and I cannot wait to dive right back into this world. If you love dark college romance with high stakes and heavy angst, run to get this one!

The Deans List is the first book the new The Deans List series by Rachel Van Dyken. Well known for her mafia family series, this story holds similar elements and only time will tell the series will continue down the mafia family road or transition to young love conquers evil.
Lilah is an only child. She is best friends with Jude, whose father is wealthy. She spends a lot of time at his house tutoring him until his mother suggests they study at her house. Because of his past, her father has a hard time finding jobs. She has grown up frugally with her mother working to pay the bills.
Jude has grown up with a mother who loves him and a father who expects the world for him. He is expected to take over the family business when the time comes, but he has no interest in that. He knows his father's business has issues, but he does not know details. He is being tutored by De=Lilah even though he does not need it. It is his way of getting closer to her. But she insists on them just being friends and not ruining their friendship by dating.
After one fateful night, their futures were sealed.
Years later, with revenge on his mind, Jude seeks out Lilah. He cannot get her out of his mind, but he has convinced himself it is hatred, and not love. He is hurt and angry at her for what she did, neither of them understanding that they have been manipulated.

For seven long years she mourned his death, mourned what they lost, and missed what could have been. Then one day while in class Jude Mercer walks through the door and Delilah was left completely beside herself...how is he alive? She went to his funeral...or did she?
Between the pages of this perfectly crafted enemies to lovers story you will meet two people who once loved one another, but circumstances beyond their control put an abrupt end to that. Now they find themselves at odds with one another. For last seven years Delilah thought that Jude was dead, then he surprises her in class one day and it is evident that he wants revenge... and she just wants to avoid him at all costs. She knows what happens to those that find themselves on the wrong side of Jude, and she wants no part of that. But Jude isn't letting her off that easily!
I can always count on Ms. Van Dyken to give me a story that I can completely lose myself in, her words grab ahold of me and I'm at their mercy until the last page finds me. Sometimes they linger long after that too... she's that good at what she does!! This book pulled me out of a little slump I fell into, it was engaging, thrilling, and a little spicy too! I planned on reading a chapter or two before bed and a few hours later I found myself swiping the last few pages! It was SO good! Nobody does romance quite like this author, her books are always thoroughly satisfying! I haven't read a book of hers that I haven't absolutely loved! Highly recommend!!

I received a gifted copy of this novel via the author and am voluntarily submitting this review. THE DEAN’S LIST is a new dark academia novel by Rachel Van Dyken. Lila’s carefully reconstructed life at West Valley State College unravels when Jude Hale seeks revenge for past betrayals using the Dean’s List to expose secrets. In High School, they had been best friends with the potential for something more when Lila was forced to make a difficult decision. During the seven years they were parted, Jude had unknowingly connected with Lila anonymously. This is a spicy, open door, first person, dual POV, contemporary new adult dark romance that uses tropes like second chance romance, mafia/crime family romance, best friends to enemies to lovers, betrayal, revenge, secrets, and hidden identities. I really enjoyed this new release written as a retelling of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, which is available today. Lila has done so much to distance herself from the life she had before, but when Jude appears in town, her new identity starts to fall apart at the seams. She has lived a very isolated life, only truly connecting with Charlie, her best friend and roommate and a physical relationship with a professor. When Jude appears on the scene, Lila learns that the boy she thought had died, and had mourned for seven years, had his own hardships while they were apart. He is very angry with the decisions she made prior to his “death.” Neither of them were expecting to still have such a strong connection. Their chemistry was incredible and the range of emotions expressed were palpable. I recommend this novel for readers who enjoy contemporary dark academia/mafia/crime family stories.

The way the story unfolds will have you asking what is actually true and what isn't, who was involved and who wasn't. All I know is it was complex and emotional as the truth was uncovered. When I got to the last portion of the book there is no way I could have put it down without finishing it.

THE DEAN'S LIST by Rachel Van Dyken completely pulled me in from the very beginning. It gave me the same vibes as Eagle Elite, which made me so happy because I absolutely loved that series. This feels like a great start to a new world while still working perfectly as a standalone.
The push and pull between Jude and Delilah was so addictive. There are bully vibes, darkness, secrets, and so much tension between them, but also some tender moments that made me want a happy ending for them both even more.
Both characters were intriguing and I loved slowly uncovering their past and all the secrets surrounding them. Some twists I was able to guess, while others really surprised me, which kept me turning the pages.
The pacing was also really strong. The story moved quickly and kept me invested the entire time. Between the dark academia atmosphere, the mystery, and the chemistry between the characters, I had a hard time putting it down. I am already excited to see where this series goes next!!

I went into it expecting a good romance and came out completely wrecked by the mystery. Rachel Van Dyken has crafted something genuinely twisty here — a dark academia story where the central secret isn't just a plot device but the beating heart of the entire book.
The premise is irresistible: a hidden ledger at Brighton University cataloging the sins of the powerful — professors, legacy families, future politicians. It sounds like campus gossip, but the deeper Delilah and Jude dig, the more dangerous it becomes. Van Dyken does a masterful job slowly peeling back the layers of what the Dean's List actually *is*, and I was genuinely shocked by where it led. Every reveal recontextualized what came before, which is exactly what a mystery should do.
The dual POV structure — told from both Jude and Delilah's perspectives, weaving between present and past — is perfectly suited to this kind of slow-burn unraveling. You're never quite sure who to trust, and the atmosphere stays tense and unsettling throughout.
Fair warning: this ends on a cliffhanger. I gasped. I immediately wanted the next book. That's either a flaw or a feature depending on your tolerance for being tortured by an author, and honestly, when the ride is this good, I'll take the torture, every single time!

🥰🥰 Jude & Lilah, best friends as teens, never crossing the line. But plenty of tentative moments. I eagerly dived straight in with this, as the plot was intriguing and boy did RVD deliver. Written with ease the story unfolds in ways not expected. Full of angst, betrayals, lies and truths.

I devoured this in one sitting, Jude is a charasmatic charmer, Lilah is downfall in more ways than one. Losing her other half , her soulmate & for her to be the centre of it all crushes Lilah. She tries to move on until her past catches up with her and leaves her with enemies she didn't know she had, people are not who they seem and betrayals run deep.
A fanatstic start to what is going to be a gripping series, I loved this, the plot is a catnip of mine and plenty of characters can be developed further in the series. Loved Lilah & Jude. Totally recommend, a fairly short read but packs a punch and doesn't stop from start to fi ish!

They had that time ripped away from them before they could ever have a relationship. Delilah watched Jude get lowered into the ground at his funeral. The funeral she wasn't allowed to attend and had to watch from across the street. Her heart was shattered.
Delilah's parents moved so she could go to Brighten University and her dad became the dean there. That is where she became Lilah. She only had 2 classes left until she could graduate and that's when her world is shattered once again. Jude is standing before her. Not his ghost, but actually him. Nothing is as it seems and apparently Delilah's parents deceived her.
Things get very complicated when rumors fly about the Dean's List. It's a list that can ruin not only your reputation but your life. Delilah is in shock and Jude is there for revenge for Delilah testifying in court, resulting in him spending 3 years in prison.
Once the pieces start falling into place, you won't want to put this book down. It's dark, moody, and angsty all in the right places. I will say I was able to figure out who played what part about halfway in, but the character development was so good that I kept those pages flipping, devouring the truths revealed.

Rachel is back y'all! Oh how I loved this one and cannot wait for the next one! I cannot wait for Axel's story because I feel like he will be like Max and just be so punchy and hilarious. I hope we get more banter between Axel and Jude.
Oh. Em. Gee. That ending! Holy Toledo the twists! One I had an idea but the rest…WHAT????? I loved the friends to enemies to lovers in this. My favorite part was being kept in the dark through most of it. It was like looking at puzzle that was missing pieces and some of them were backwards. Totally had me hooked from the beginning. I loved how Jude struggled with his relationship with Lilah and how he eventually came around to listen to her and what she went through. I liked that Lilah struggled with everything that she had been put through, but was also strong and stood up for herself. I thought it was a great representation of strength, but not ignoring that bad stuff happened to her and she had to deal with that. She was not ok and that was ok, but she wasn't going to be a doormat and wishy washy.
This concept of the dean's list was really interesting too. It was a great catalyst and an awesome understory to keep through the love story.
Also all the Count of Monte Cristo quotes made me want to read/watch that one again for sure.

The Dean's List by Rachel Van Dyken is a book all about secrets and lies. The story follows Lilah and Jude who have been best friends for years, with some unrequited love thrown in the mix. That changes drastically one night, leaving Lilah to start over.... only that's not as easy as it sounds when she sees Jude everywhere! And then she sees him in the flesh.... let the games begin!
This is a story of betrayal, secrets and lies and a Dean's List which can destroy anyone it wants. We see through the eyes of both Lilah and Jude. Lilah as she struggles with the death of her best friend and the mental health spiral that it entails and Jude who thinks his best friend has betrayed him in the worst possible way, neither of them realising that they are pawns in a bigger game.
There is a lot going on in this book so be warned going into it, it is like a big jigsaw puzzle and you're trying to figure out where all of the pieces fit. If you love spice, intrigue, friends to enemies to lovers, then this is going to be one for you. Be warned as you travel down the rabbit hole.

The Dean's List is an emotional and suspenseful story. I enjoyed the plot and the characters.
Delilah has believed for so many years that Jude was dead. He was her childhood friend that she had feelings for when one night changed everything. She has tried to start her life over and now is about to finish college. She has been seeing her professor behind closed doors. When she catches him cheating on her she is devastated.
Jude has been in prison and has been plotting his revenge. He believes that Delilah knew what she was doing when she put him away. When Jude finally confronts Delilah, she is shocked to see he is still alive and has come to her college. The truth unravels and Delilah realizes she was lied to by her father. It was not Jude's funeral that she saw.
I loved the tension and suspense in Delilah and Jude's story. It was so original and deeply moving. I hurt for Delilah when she realized she had been deceived by her father. And Jude had all those wasted years that he believed she betrayed him. Such an emotional story. If you enjoy suspense and secrets you will love this one. I look forward to more from this talented author.

I read this book in less than 5 hours. I could not put it down. The twist, the turns, the emotional roller coaster had my heart racing the entire time. The way Rachel Van Dyken writes is unbelievable. Her words pull you right in. This book is book one in this series and I can tell you that you will not be disappointed. I cannot wait for book #2. I did not want it to end.
