There are so many things that I want to talk about, but I can’t because they would be spoiler related. So keep in mind that there’s a ton involved in this book that I’m not able to discuss here. Check the content warnings for this book if you have concerns because there are some really big ones here, but know that the CW will have spoilers to the story.
🎨 The writing style was so easy to read and binge. All the graffiti scenes were fun and very artsy. I haven’t seen that type of art in a book before and I thought that was cool. The friendships were so good. The bonds here were ANOTHER LEVEL. 😭😭😭 Wes and Charlotte were the most big hearted humans, and I just could nooooot. 😭
🎨 I loved the therapy representation. It was heavily needed in a book like this- and I think the author did a great job including that in the characters’ journey for the most part. I did feel like Wren needed a bit more healing of herself that we didn’t get to see. Her spiral really concerned me. Her vices wouldn’t just go away once she’s in a relationship. I struggled with that part of the story.

Some of the issues that are in this book I have only seen them done in open door books (which might be because I haven’t discovered other authors yet), but I loved seeing some of these traumatic storylines without having explicit content thrown in. This is a story of two troubled, broken people trying to fight for love. It was compelling and really made me ponder a lot of questions.

Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC of this book. It ended up meaning so much more to me than I expected and made me incredibly emotional, which almost never happens to me with books.
We get a quirky, strong FMC and a seriously tortured hero, and the tension between them after they reconnect is unreal. The longing, the history, the way it’s all written feels so raw and vivid that I felt every bit of it.
There’s also this quiet mystery surrounding Alex, especially his ten year absence from Wren’s life, and it keeps you hooked the whole way through. I genuinely could not put this down.
What really stood out to me is how real it all feels. Every emotion hits, every moment feels honest and earned, and it’s written so beautifully that it’s impossible not to connect with it.
It’s not just a romance either. It’s about growing through hard things, adapting when life throws something unexpected at you, and trying to balance everything without losing yourself, which makes it even more relatable.
Heartbreaking, intense, and completely unforgettable.

In short, this book was a beautiful, heart wrecking journey. We follow Wren and Alex—best friends—through a dual timeline from their childhood days to the present when they’re reunited. The book was so devastatingly beautiful, I really have no other words 😭 I read it so fast, my sleep was nonexistent.
The slow burn relationship between Wren and Alex was one of my favorite things. The comfort they found in each other and the chemistry between the two was amazing. It wasn’t rushed or awkward. Both characters were written so well, they felt like real people and they were so relatable too. MY GOD MY SHAYLAS, I actually am so obsessed with them it’s so sick.
Reading this book was so refreshing and I’m so excited for it to come out so other readers can find solace and joy in it.

Wow. Just wow. There were so many complexities and layers and intricacies of this story it is astounding in the best way. It is way more than just a romance. A lot of books I can read a page or two when I get a minute here or there. This one I didn’t want to do that - I wanted to read it when I had a chunk of time and sink in and savour. Wren and Alex definitely have a hard fought for HEA.
I don’t want to say much because I don’t want to give much away. It is single POV with a dual timeline. Some little pieces I took note of while reading that aren’t spoilery for the plot:
- He looks after her when she’s drunk
- Keep your tissue box handy!
- He dyes her hair
- Healing
-FMC is quirky and confident in herself and speaks her mind with an ADHD diagnosis in her 20’s
- Drunken no filter telling the truth
- amazing therapy rep

This book was such a heartbreakingly beautiful read, make sure you check trigger warnings. Definitely teared up a few times. And as a girl that loves dying her hair vibrant colors, one scene in particular really stood out for me as one of the best moments in a romance book that I have read, if you know you know. The only thing that held me back from this being a five star read was that it was a really long book. I was definitely locked in the whole time reading it though even though I don’t normally read big books. Overall a great read that I will be thinking about for quite some time. Thank you to the author for giving me the chance to read Whenever I’m With You early through an eARC.

🫂My review
One of the first things that I always clock when reading a contemporary romance is whether or not I find the FMC likable. More often than not, I find authors rush the plot and leave me feeling like the woman at the center of the story is complex but not someone I relate enough to to root for. TLDR: Wren is the hero of her story and someone whose complexities make her real and likable.
This brings me to my next point - Lorissa Padilla knows how to write dialogue 👏 The consistent tones she brought to Wren and Alex’s characters, and even the smaller ones, made their personalities so vivid. I felt like I really knew these people and what they might say or do next.
Another sticky point for me with most rom coms is the lack of realistic detail when it comes to careers or living where they do. While it made the book much longer, I appreciated all of those glimpses into Wren’s life at the art gallery and the effort and time she put into her work. I also appreciated the time and depth the author gave Wren’s mental health journey. Depression, grief and PTSD don’t have linear paths or timelines, and it was actually healing for me to see the accuracy of this portrayal.
To remain spoilerless - and trust me you don’t want any! This story is too good! - Everything to do with Alex’s slow opening up and trickle of sharing information felt appropriate and delicately handled. It’s clear Lorissa did the research when writing this book and I was really impressed with how she navigated some very heavy topics in a way that felt compassionate.
This is a slow burn contemporary romance I wish I could reread for the first time. Fans of Promise Me Sunshine by Cara Bastone and Passion Project by London Sperry will love this one!

Where to start. Okay maybe the beginning. At first, I struggled so much with Wren because frankly she’s very self-centered and in her own world. She only sees her own perspective. My heart was breaking for Alex with the first re-incounter. From the beginning my gut called what happened and I KNEW he needed more grace than Wren was giving. However, I must admit Wren won me over because she was sincere and genuine in her need to love in the best way she could have. I still could not stand some of her choices but ultimately I was rooting for her and enjoyed her.
Their healing and story is a rollercoaster. I feel like the author did amazing with the flashbacks and flow of the story. There were so many gut punches and well timed bombs that left me with my jaw on the floor. I really appreciated the growth from both Alex and Wren. Wren’s felt more natural as we could read her inner thoughts and sometimes I was wondering where Alex was going or how he got to finally opening up, or the promises he made. But despite questioning if he got there naturally, I felt like his growth seemed real and accurate to a man who lived through all he did.
Ultimately, I appreciated the message of the book that love heals. That there is no more worthy endeavor than laying one’s life down for one’s friend and loving them endlessly.
Loved the found family aspect and how friends become closer than family. I really loved how much they support each other and whole heartedly loved each other. Also her whole support system at work and his support system too. Just so loved.
This is a closed door romance with non descriptive kissing and some cursing. If you’re a sensitive reader, prepare yourself as this book handles heavy topics. However, the author does it with a lot of care and grace.

If you're looking for an emotional, heart-wrenching, tissue-consuming story that ultimately leaves you feeling healed and hopeful, this is the one.
In this book, we meet a wholesome, creative, and kind FMC who feels so real and relatable. I loved how this story isn't just centered around the main couple and the romance, but also brings in so many interesting, well-developed storylines — from her job at the art gallery and the exhibitions she plans to her relationships with her best friend and colleagues, and so much more. That actually makes the 600+ pages fly by.
And then there’s Alex… mysterious at first, but ultimately very caring, strong and deeply human. It was impossible not to fall for him. He’s such a beautiful character, with so much depth and emotional complexity that makes him feel incredibly real. It was so amazing to watch their development, with the chapters alternating between past and present, giving a lot of insight on their dynamic.
What a beautiful journey it was to watch Wren reunite with her lifelong best friend, learning to accept and navigate the imperfections and cloudy days that life brings. This story was sad and emotional at times, but also so colorful and hopeful in the end. I enjoyed every second of this rollercoaster of emotions and truly couldn’t put it down.
The book includes anxiety, trauma, and ADHD representation, and I loved how it was portrayed in a realistic way, without romanticizing it at all. It was so thoughtful, it was impossible not to get in your feelings as you read the characters' ups and downs and see their healing. Really beautifuly written.

Wow…if you love emotional devastation… push-and-pull romance then you absolutely need to read “Wherever I’m With You”.
I can’t tell you how many times my heart dropped while reading this story. I cried, I laughed, I held my breath, and I found myself desperately rooting for two wonderfully flawed, deeply human characters.
Wren and Alex first meet in a treehouse when they’re just eleven years old, and from that moment they’re inseparable. After high school, life pulls them in different directions, but they make one promise to each other that no matter what, they’ll meet back at the treehouse one year later. Except…Alex never shows up.
Heartbroken and abandoned, Wren is forced to pick up the pieces and move forward with her life. Then, ten years later, Alex unexpectedly walks back into it.
I absolutely loved the way this story unfolded through the past and present timelines that paralleled each other. Watching their childhood friendship blossom while slowly uncovering what really happened all those years ago had me completely hooked. I spent the entire book trying to figure out why Alex disappeared, and when the truth was finally revealed…I was shocked!! It completely shattered my heart. I won’t say anything more because discovering the story alongside Wren is part of what makes this book so unforgettable.
Things I loved: -The beautiful childhood-friends-to-lovers journey and seeing how their bond evolved over the years. -The found family that surrounded them with so much love and support. -The difficult topics that were handled with incredible care, compassion, and authenticity. -The thoughtful mental health representation and the honest conversations about therapy, healing, and asking for help. -Wren and Alex’s slow-burn, push-and-pull romance that had my heart soaring one moment and breaking the next. -The perfectly timed humor that offered moments of lightness during the heavier emotional scenes. -The way art and music were woven throughout the story, adding so much depth and emotion.

Oh my goodness, where do I even begin? Lorissa Padilla is one of those authors who I know is going to bring me to tears every single time I pick up one of her books. I go in with this knowledge and try to prepare myself for the emotional wreckage that is sure to come, knowing that the story is absolutely going to be worth it. But try as I might to prepare myself, I was not expecting how deeply this one would hit me. To say that Alex and Wren had my heart would be a complete understatement. These two were best friends as teenagers until he disappeared from her life ten years earlier with no explanation. We get their story in a dual timeline showing their friendship in the past and the present timeline after they are reconnected after all those years. That past timeline showed the strength and connection of that friendship, only making me wonder what could have possibly happened to Alex to destroy it all. And when we finally get that full story? Oh, my heart! This story is absolutely heartbreaking and had me reading through tears at multiple points... but in the midst of the trauma, it was also so beautiful and healing. Both of these characters have been through so much, but their story didn't stay in the heaviness. It was vulnerable and tender, and I just couldn't help but love these two together... Truly this review could never do the story justice, but if you love a romance that will break your heart and put it back together, this is one absolutely not to be missed. Another new favorite for me!

This book was a rollercoaster of emotions. I cried for the MMC and what he has been through; man, was he wearing his heart on his sleeve the whole time (in the present). There were times I found myself relating to the FMC in a chaotic but nice way, but there were times I found her too overwhelming and frustrating. I really hated the whole Henry, Matt, and Dom storyline with her in the present day; it added to my frustration, apart from the fact that I do not think she will survive an apocalypse given her sickly sweet nature.
It was a nice and tearful read overall, but I must say it was a bit too long, and the miscommunication, or lack of communication thereof, was kinda bothering me as well. We also don't get to meet the MMC in the present day for quite a few pages. I really loved Wes' involvement, although it might have been a bit less. I would've loved to see a few chapters in the MMC's POV as well to really understand him. While I loved the MCs finding their way back and talking it out, as well as the epilogue 15 years later, I would have really loved to see a stronger development in their relationship. While I did love their past dynamic, I would have loved to see the development of them realizing their feelings then as well because the moment right before the fallout seemed to come out of nowhere (not from our standpoint of how the MCs are actually feeling but rather given how they were thinking the whole time).

I went into this one mostly blind, I only knew it was a second chance and that it was really long. Big books don’t scare me, so I dove in for a buddy read with a friend. I especially loved the quirky FMC and actually really enjoyed the high school flashbacks because it set up everything to well! The way the present day and flashbacks were written had me frantically flipping pages to solve the mystery of what happened. Both timelines were so interesting. I was obsessing until about halfway through when I started to get overwhelmed with all of the different heavy things that kept happening. I really appreciated the representation and thought everything was beautifully written, but I felt like the romance started taking a bit of a back seat to the trauma. This made totally sense to the story because there was a lot the characters needed to work through but more of a personal preference. However, despite those feeling, the friendships, the art, the therapy, the love…ALL of these things worked together to form a story that tugged (stomped?) on the heart strings and was super moving and hopeful at its core. I definitely recommend for those who like super emotional and gritty stories.

This book is not a Romance. (Don't fret! It has an HEA!) But it is so much bigger than just the romantic story it contains. Lorissa has done an absolutely incredible job in her handling of the topics covered in this book. I am in awe.
This book is HEAVY. It deals with topics that are not for the faint of heart and I beg you to check the content warnings before you dive in. This is not an easy read. It is heartbreak and struggles and healing. It's a story of grief in every form. Of mental health. It is a story of finding yourself, and your family, and your home.
Wren and Alex have my entire heart. I felt every moment of their pain. Every low moment. I repeatedly felt like my stomach was in my throat. But I also felt their moments of joy. Their wins. Their friendship. Their love. I sobbed through this book. Repeatedly.

This book had me hooked from the very first chapter, and once I started reading, I didn't want to put it down.
As someone who is absolutely obsessed with the friends-to-lovers trope, this story felt like it was written for me. But it's not just friends-to-lovers—it's childhood best friends, years of separation, unanswered questions, and a reunion ten years later. That's exactly the kind of emotional chaos I love.
The mystery surrounding Wren and Alex kept me turning the pages. Why did Alex disappear? Why didn't he show up? And what really happened ten years ago? I needed answers.
Alex completely stole my heart with his quirky personality, and I loved watching all the emotions, longing, hurt, and lingering feelings unfold between them. Even though it's a longer book, I never felt bored.
The only thing that frustrated me at times was the lack of direct communication between the main characters, I just wanted them to sit down and have an honest conversation already! But honestly, that's a small complaint in an otherwise beautiful and emotional second-chance romance that completely worked for me 🤍

This story is realistic, and I had to stop myself from crying when Wren and Alex found comfort in each other. The emotions aren’t exaggerated or overdone; they sit quietly and then hit you all at once. The yearning in this book is insane, but it’s also soft, lingering, and painfully relatable.
Wren, especially, felt very personal to me. The way she connects with people so easily, makes jokes, and experiences things so deeply—it felt very real. I loved the depth of each character. I especially liked how the author transitioned from best friends to lovers without making it awkward and created genuine chemistry. I also loved Dom because of his dry humour and emotional intelligence.
It’s not like the other romances I have read; if the genre didn’t say romance, you wouldn’t immediately realise it. The author didn’t make the forced proximity obvious; instead, they made us feel everything alongside the characters. It was the best slow-burning clean romance I have read.

I really enjoyed Wherever I’m With You. This is a contemporary women’s fiction story with a love story (closed door), and it felt so much more real than your typical romance. It’s raw, emotional, and full of real-life trials that make the story hit so much deeper.
This isn’t your usual fairytale romance. It feels like something that could actually happen, and that’s what made it so powerful for me. I was completely pulled in and honestly would be shocked if this isn’t one of the next books to take over the book community.

From the moment I began beta reading this book I knew Wren and Alex were going to have a permanent place in my heart. And writing a review has been difficult because I have so much I want to say but I also don’t want to spoil a single moment for you so I’ve narrowed down one really important thing that I want to share from my heart…
As the child of a father in recovery, and as someone who worked in rehabs for years, this book hit me in all the feels and also made me nervous. (Crud now I’m crying again) This book handled alcoholism with love and care. It portrayed relapse with dignity. This story presents those in recovery as whole humans who are worthy of love even when they mess up. And she so accurately portrayed the loved ones as they navigate what to say a when, the research, the worry, and also, the relationships that fall off because of discomfort. Lorissa, thank you. This book is beautiful and I am better for having read it.
I PROMISE it has a happily ever after, friends. But that’s all you’re getting from me.

I was hooked!!! This was such a well-written back-and-forth perspectives book! I always love reading in alternative POVs and this did not disappoint. There were so many times I wanted to yell at Alex and Wren because they both were feeling the same thing but couldn’t quite express it to each other and they’re just too stinking nice!! They would sacrifice everything for each other. I couldn’t put this down!! Highly recommend if you love a good second-chance childhood best friends kind of love story!!

I thought this was going to be a sweet second chance romance with a friends to lovers to strangers to lovers storyline… but it ended up being way more dramatic than I expected. There were parts I really enjoyed and others that didn’t quite work for me. I wish we’d gotten to see more of their healing journey and more progress in their relationship. By the time the book ended, they had barely made any progress toward becoming intimate…

I got a arc copy of the book. This was a 5/5 for me. Loved this book so much. Ughhh bring the tissues when you do read it because this book will pull at your heartstrings. I loved the changing from past to present and to really understand the story better. On what happened. You won’t regret reading this book at all

This story as a bit of everything...Romance, flirt, pushing each other back, longing, found family, one -sided love, friends for benefits.
The separation part in the past timeline hit me as I'm also in the last year of my school so that was definitely a personal read as well.
It's a full well written package and a must read.

All it took was a treehouse and some hair dye to wreck me. This book was so emotional and well written that I sobbed more than I ever have reading any other book before. The author writes like a seasoned author who has been churning out books for years. The redemption story of both Alex and Wren was such a beautiful example of perseverance and strength. Definitely a must read!
