When not writing, Award-winning Regency romance author Kelly Miller spends her free time singing, playing the piano, reading, and amusing her dogs. Like a much loved Jane Austen character, she is an excellent walker.
Her Austenesque Regency romances have won first place honors from: Chanticleer International Book Awards, Royal Dragonfly Book Awards, Indies Today Book Awards, Incipere Book Awards, and Firebird Book Awards.
Holiday at Pemberley: A Darcy & Elizabeth Pride and Prejudice Variation by Kelly Miller is yet another favorite in my growing collection of her Austen adaptations, though I suspect I say that every time. What can I say? Miller has a gift for the genre, and this retelling is no exception.
Her plots are always intriguing, filled with unpredictable twists and turns, and Holiday at Pemberley is no different. One might wonder how many more ways this timeless story can be told. And then Miller finds another, and it feels entirely fresh.
At the heart of every retelling is the romance between Darcy and Elizabeth, a love perpetually tested by some new and imminent threat. This time, that threat arrives in two forms: a scheming, plotting relative, and a mysterious angel named Graham. His presence casts a quiet sense of doom over the story as he ingratiates himself into Darcy and Elizabeth’s home, wielding his godly powers to glimpse the past, the future, and perhaps someone’s death at Pemberley. But whose? That question held me in a firm grip from the first page to the last.
What I loved about this particular retelling is that the courtship is done. Darcy and Elizabeth are married, parents to their lovable son Bennett, and the romance between them is stronger and richer for it. Miller doesn’t sacrifice the love story. She deepens it.
Holiday at Pemberley is romantic suspense at its most satisfying. If you’re an Austen lover with a taste for clever retellings full of heart, mystery, and just a touch of the supernatural, this one is absolutely for you.
What an interesting peek into Darcy and Elizabeth’s early years of marriage! I always enjoy additional supernatural twists, yet was a bit taken back by the “Meet Joe Black” trajectory of the story. I did like the interactions Graham had with so many of the characters as he enjoyed his “holiday”. Imagine the relief, contentment and averting wrongs that one could realize with someone like this in our lives! Although feelings of impending doom followed me as much of the plot unfolded, it was a great relief to see how things turned out in the end. An imaginative variation yet wholly centered on the love Darcy and Elizabeth shared. Loved it!

What a wonderful variation, and just who is taking a holiday at Pemberley? Darcy has an accident while riding his very loyal horse. He miraculously survived but then receives a visitor. Actually the Darcy's received a number of uninvited visitors.
One, such a handsome young man; others include Lady C and another lady. She is being very revengeful. Time, her daughter and a special visitor's memories for her, save her. Actually this special visitor saves a lot of misunderstandings, feelings, and hearts.
Totally enjoyed this variation and feel good story. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Highly recommend. Everything I have read that Kelly Miller has written is worth a read! Never disappoints.
I enjoyed this story so much. I kept thinking throughout--"if i walked in their shoes how would i feel?" Every character grew and changed from the original Pride and Prejudice (not that it isn't my absolute favorite). It was amazing to actually like and understand characters i had (before this--really just tolerated).
The supernatural character--provided the catalyst the characters needed to take that next step --be who they were meant to be.
I loved it. I laughed, I cried a lot. But happy tears.
