I was really excited to dive into Regnum: Short Stories by M.M. Crumley. As a fan of the Immortal Doc Holliday world, I think I may have set my expectations a little higher than what this collection ultimately delivered. That said, there was still plenty here to enjoy, and Crumley clearly understands that sometimes readers just want to step outside the usual Doc and Andrew adventures and explore some of the other corners of this world.
Not every story worked for me. A few felt a little slow, and there were moments when I found myself waiting for the story to sink its teeth into me. But then you get something like the Pecos Bill addition, and suddenly I'm a very happy reader. Pecos Bill was always one of my favorite characters as a kid, so seeing him make an appearance was an absolute treat and probably one of my favorite parts of the collection.
I was also genuinely astonished to discover just how much Crumley's publishing operation is essentially a family enterprise. There's something pretty cool about seeing a book come from that kind of personal, family-driven effort. You can definitely feel the passion behind the project.
The author Q&A at the end? I could have lived without it. That's purely a personal preference—I generally prefer my books to end when the story ends and let the monsters, immortals, and assorted supernatural troublemakers linger in my head a little longer. 😂
While Regnum wasn't quite everything I hoped it would be, it was still an enjoyable return to a world I like, and I appreciate Crumley giving readers exactly what they had been asking for: more stories beyond the familiar Doc and Andrew narratives. It's a collection that feels like a genuine thank-you to the fans who helped keep this universe alive.
5/5 — Even when a few stories moved at a slower pace, there was enough here to keep this immortal fan entertained. And anytime Pecos Bill shows up, I'm probably going to be a little biased. 🤠📚
