Caia is a fresh college graduate who has the power to start a fire with the snap of her fingers. She isn't ready to grow up and settle down in real life. But ready or not, real life is coming for her. When out-of-towner Brandt bumps into her too many times to be coincidence, Caia begins to realize that her parents might not be who they say they are. They have a secret, one they are willing to die to protect.
Ash is a Guardian, genetically enhanced to be stronger, faster, and smarter than an ordinary human. Cool, collected, and highly trained, Ash is one of the Agency's best. But when a long time missing Guardian draws the attention of the Guild, an organization of powerful rune masters, things get personal for Ash. Very personal.
Caia is swept up into Ash's world of super soldiers and rune masters and propelled toward an uncertain future. But one thing is always certain when playing with fire - someone is bound to get burned.
There's not much to this book it's basically all there in that summary no surprises no tension just a fairly run of the mill action story. Beyond the paper thin plot there is not much of an explanation of what is going on in this world. Bad guys are bad just because and they barely have names or personalities apart from generic evil and moustache twirling villain. The good guys (again good just because, even if they seem to be basically mercenaries of some kind and not actually selfless dogooders) are just as two dimensional.
Very little happens in terms of plot that goes anywhere. Because things are so short it's hard to care about any of the characters we barely know anything about them and no one but the two mains gets any real dialogue or character development.
Anyway in summary needed more depth a more involving story. There are some ideas there but everything is just skeletons that needs fleshing out to be interesting.
I actually really enjoyed this book. I like the unique paranormal aspects as well as the atypical storyline. I didn't really pick up on the romance aspect of it, but I suppose that may be still to come in future installments. I would have liked it to be longer, 177 pages is a good deal shorter than I'm accustomed to. All things considered,I'm looking forward to book #2.
Not one who typically reads books of this genre, I got sucked in by the end of Chapter 1. By Chapter 4, I ordered a few copies for my classroom from Amazon. The novel's action kept me riveted and the vivid language made Ms. Wilder's story play out like a movie in my mind.
At first I was confused since it started out as Ash's viewpoint. But when it flashed over to Caia's viewpoint I started to understand more. This is a bit of science and magic meshed. A lot of surprises included. I enjoyed it a lot and look forward to the next book.
