it was ok? it felt like a VERY cheesy movie. i didn't like the hero or the heroine, they were just—characters? i didn't connect with them and it was just so cheesy that i wanted to laugh but it wasn't very funny.

nothing special about it, i feel like its a very common plot. spoiler warning for y'all legit in the next sentence :/: fiancé cheats with his work partner, they are planning to do some illegal shit at their workplace so the boss of that said workplace promises a plan for the heroine so she can spy on them. said boss loves the heroine. the mistress is a psycho bitch, they fight. hero and heroine say i love you, the cheater and the mistress in jail. the end. didn't really need 200 something pages but ok.

Overall Opinion: I had some issues with this book. I never fully felt the connection between the characters, and the character development seemed to just skim the surface and not really get into who these people were. I finished this before going to sleep and when I started to write this review I hadn't remembered the characters names, so that tells me I wasn't invested in their story at all. I also had a big issue with a situation towards the end.... This issue brought my rating down from just ok 3 stars to my not liking it 2 stars.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Ashley and Jason's story. They meet when Ashley's fiancé makes her go to a business dinner at Jason's house (put on by his stepsister who is Ashley's fiance's colleague). To escape the dull party, Ashley ventures down to the basement where she finds and meets Jason. After spending some time together (and Ashley finding some unfortunate information out about her fiancé), Jason and his grandfather ask Ashley for help spying on her fiancé. The fiancé is working with the stepsister in doing some illegal dealings with the grandfather's company. Throughout spying and working together, Ashley and Jason start to develop stronger feelings for each other. There is some ex drama and some family drama, but they get their HEA ending.

POV: This was told in 3rd person narrative with the focus on our h's perspective.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. It flowed well, and I didn't skim at any point.

Instalove: I'd say no. I would call it instalust, but they didn't express their love until later in the book.

H rating: 3 stars. Jason. He was ok...yep, that's it.

h rating: 2 stars. Ashley. She was just ok, and then towards the end of the book she gets mad at him for a stupid reason IMO that dropped her rating down to 2 stars for me.

Sadness level: Low. No tissues needed.

Heat level: Low. I didn't find their chemistry all that hot...kind of meh.

Descriptive sex: Yes and no. There are some somewhat descriptive scenes, and some fade to black.

Safe sex: No. Condoms or birth control are not mentioned (that I remember).

OW/OM drama: The h is engaged through most of the story, and spying on him is the big drama of the story.

Sex scene with OW or OM:

Cheating:

Possible Triggers:

Closure: This had a good amount of closure with a HEA ending. I still wanted to know some things though...

How I got it: It was part of my kindle unlimited subscription.

I guess I'm just old-fashioned...

I married and moved in with my husband AFTER the honeymoon.

In this day and age, that seems to be quite unusual. It also seems to me that engagements happen because of lease agreements and convenience rather than committing yourself to the best man or woman for you. Sure, there can be ups and downs from not living together before marriage, but, there seems to be way more ups and downs from couples expecting change when they get married. Why would you expect the person who is messy while engaged, all of a sudden become clean and considerate after the marriage vows? Also, a fiance with a wandering eye probably still has a wandering eye after the ring's on his finger...ALCOHOL IS NOT AN EXCUSE!!

Sorry, now that I have that off my chest...

I really enjoyed reading Undercover Love and read it in one sitting. The characters were interesting, the storyline kept me captivated and the hero was HOT!!! Lucy Score tells a great story. I loved that while she brought things that would normally have me running for the hills, she still managed to keep me captivated. Yes, there were a few eye-twitches, but a quick scan ahead put my mind at ease that Ms Score...just wouldn't go there.

While I really enjoyed this story, I have to admit that I thought the heroine was a bit of a twit. How could she be so oblivious to her fiance's faults and settle for such a lack-lustre relationship? I couldn't even understand the couple's original attraction and chemistry. It seemed impossible to believe that she could have ever loved him, especially considering her friends and family detested him.

Undercover Love was a great story that left me completely satisfied. Yes, I stumbled a few times but it never went past my boundaries of acceptance. There were a few moments towards the end where I questioned my undying loyalty towards the hero, but it was all OK in the end. He is just an awesome bloke...who happens to have money, good looks, is considerate in the bedroom, and a very nice cabin. A little *Fairy-Tale Prince* but who doesn't love a dashing and devoted hero? At least he wasn't perfect...

I definitely recommend Undercover Love if you haven't read it before in the older versions.

The covers of the older versions are on Goodreads, and I think one version may have even been called something different.

4 stars. I enjoyed this story - the storyline was fairly simple, but it was well written and not too angsty considering it deals with some normally angsty topics.

The heroine (Ashley) is engaged to Steven, and goes with him to a work function. She’s been feeling increasingly uneasy about his relationship with a female colleague (Victoria), who has influenced Steven into becoming a different person. She meets the hero (Jason) at the party, he’s the host, but he’s also Victoria’s stepbrother. It doesn’t take long for Ashley to find out that Steven has been cheating on her with Victoria. Jason tells her that besides sleeping with each other, Victoria and Steven are also planning an illegal business deal, and asks for her help with finding evidence to use against them. Ashley is heartbroken and angry at the betrayal and agrees to help. The hero, who was instantly attracted to the heroine, pursues her throughout their investigation, and they spend time together. They get a really sweet HEA ending.

As I said already, this book really wasn’t very angsty considering the heroine is being cheated on and even catches her fiancé in the act. I will say that their romance did move at pretty rocket-fast speeds, but I still really enjoyed their connection. I definitely recommend this book if you’re looking for an easy read.

Safety is good; no virgins, hero’s past isn’t really mentioned but he’s not a manwhore. The heroine is engaged and being cheated on by her fiancé, the heroine was still *technically* engaged when she begins her relationship with the hero, but she would have broken it off if not for the investigation. I didn’t consider what she did to be cheating at all. OM and OW drama from the cheating couple, no scenes with OM/OW, no cheating between the MC’s.

Ashley and her fiance have grown a bit apart as he seeks to further his career, at a cocktail party hosted by the stepbrother of Steven's bitchy coworker Victoria, Ashley meets wealthy, smooth security expert Jason Baine. From their first encounter sparks fly but Ashley is convinced he's playing a game. Finding out later that her fiance was not only cheating with Victoria but that he may also be involved in something illegal she's shocked but even more hurt to realize Jason knew. Agreeing to work with Jason to find the dirt on her fiance and Victoria Ashley goes undercover in her own home. While she's involved in her tasks however Jason is never far from her mind. When things come to a head however she realises that Jason had his own agenda all along and set things in motion for her to actually witness her fiance in action

*********
This was ok but didn't wow me,I found the villain Victoria to be exaggerated. I could understand her threats to Jason as a young man causing him distress but as an adult billionaire security expert??? Why didn't he wire himself up and het her to confess??after all she was quick to blab! It just didn't seem plausible
Maybe it's because I'm accustomed to Alpha males who are one step up from cavemen but Jason asking Ashley to be undercover rubbed me the wrong way. She stayed in her home with the fiance sleeping next to him every night but Jason only objects to that after he and Ashley have sex? I wasn't a fan
Ashley was an ok h, not a weak willed simpering miss she had a backbone and was strong yet relatable

****I hate the separation at the 85-90% mark of the book! Whyyyyyyy...........

All in all this was just ok

Cheating- technically the h never broke things off with her fiance before being with the H. As he was a lying cheating scumbag this didn't bother me.... However the initial meet between the h/H with the sparks flying and talks of kissing left me uncomfortable because she didn't know the fiance was cheating at that point
The h didn't sleep with her fiance after meeting the H
OW drama- Victoria was cheating with the h's man but was also the step sister of the H. She'd been trying to have sex with him as a teen and used threats of crying rape to get him to do what she wanted for years she was a femme fatale type lol
We witness the h catching the scumbag in the act
Short separation between the h/H but no one else during that time

Just cinched the 4*.

When I go for a genre like this, this is what I want.

Not dark, or desperate or plotless or instant in any way. But fun, and flirty, a little dangerous, fraught with tension. I swooned so hard.

And I was there with Ashley. I wanted to crush Steven under the toes of my 4 inch heels (if I owned a pair.) Thank god this is fiction. And when she was with Jason... there were lightening sparks. And they didn't hop into bed straight away, but there was a flirtatious dance of will-they-won't they - I don't know if he's playing me - push pull (the good kind).

“This is our second dance. Practically our second date,” he said quietly as he tilted his head down toward hers. An invitation.
“What’s your game?” she breathed, studying his eyes.
“Why does there have to be a game?”

His eyes glinted and she felt his lips curve against her palm. He kissed her hand before taking it in his. “I really do like you.”
“I kind of like you, too, Jason. Even though I’ll probably live to regret it.”

Nothing Lucy Score pens is ever bad....but this story was just okay for me.
I was hoping for either some lighthearted fun and laughs here or simply put a more engaging story to read ....it was a little short on both.

Undercover Love is OK read. Not much from the story is memorable to me. Miss Score missing chemistry between the characters. The chemistry is there, but not enough to make the story hotter.

The plot is also plausable. Min drama and min twist.

I really do not know what to write more.

This is pure wish-fulfillment fantasy, but a wonderful example of it. And I don't mean just the "billionaire" part. Ashley has a good life, doing things she loves and is successful in her career and life in general (if not exactly rich or anything). She's well-adjusted and content and now I think on it, that's rather rare in the genre. Her only real trouble is being engaged to a selfish idiot. The thing is, Score does a good job taking that and making it three dimensional even so.

It didn't hurt that Jason is pure win. He's strong and caring and determined and successful. And again, Score does a good job making that three dimensional and not just in giving him a real (and ongoing) problem with the villain of the story.

The plot was serviceable and interesting enough, but I was in it for the central relationship. They had good chemistry and their interactions were outstanding. There wasn't as much wit as in the other Score book I read, but then, these characters don't really warrant that degree of banter. This relationship was far more comfortable, with hanging out in sweats watching movies or a spontaneous bout of racquetball (which also shouldn't have worked, but mostly did). So it's a good comfort read with solid mechanics.

Not that there weren't some minor issues. The editing was remarkably poor, for example. And there's a late-story over-reaction by Ashley that I felt was a bit forced for purposes of plot or tension or whatever. Neither of these bothered me terribly in the end, but they did drag me out of the story a bit (though not enough to drag my rating down from the solid four it had throughout).

A note about Steamy: At the upper part of my mid-steam tolerance. There are three or four explicit sex scenes and they're pretty adventurous for where they were in their relationship. They fit the emotional arc of the relationship, though, so acted as an illustration of the playful comfort they had going.

Oh wow, I loved this book!

Ashley is smart and driven but she finds herself left out thanks to her fiance, Steven, a major jerk.

During a cocktail party Ashley meets tall, dark, handsome, and unbelievably wealthy Jason. He is the half brother to Victoria, a woman who is a ruthless, lying, stealing, blackmailing slut. Victoria has grabbed onto Steven and has convinced him to do illegal things to aid the two of them supposedly leaving their workplace, owned by her grandfather by marriage. They want to move on to bigger and better things...leaving her family business behind and the family would be oh-so-happy for her to be gone. She has kept her job, so far, by blackmail.

After Jason and Ashley become acquainted and Ashley spies what's going on upstairs at the cocktail party including her fiance, Steven, and Victoria, the skank, she agrees to help Jason and his grandfather discover enough information like insider trading...for lack of a better word...to bring legal ramifications to Victoria and Steven.

I highly recommend this book. The love story was so sweet between Jason and Ashley was so incredibly sweet!

After reading By a Thread, I decided that it was time to go through Lucy Score's library starting from the beginning. That's how I found myself here.

This was just an okay read for me. There wasn't anything particularly wonderful about our heroine, Ashley. I didn't understand why she was with her fiance in the first place and didn't believe that she didn't know that he was up to something behind her back.

Jason was just a little too broody and closed off. I never felt like we got to know him that well. I kept wondering if he was really attracted to Ashley or just using her.

There were a few other things that didn't make it spectacular for me. 1 - the third person POV was a little confusing at times. 2 - I know it doesn't bother most people, but

This won't stop me from continuing on with my reading quest, though! On to the next book!

I'm honestly giving this book two stars because it's written by Lucy Score and I kinda love her writing, but I didn't like this book, at all. Didn't like the characters, didn't like the story and I'm glad this wasn't the first book I read from her otherwise I'm not sure I would have picked up a second one.

I still love Lucy and her writing, but this book was a disappointment.

Enjoyable entertaining read.

Ashley's fiancé Steve has changed, she's noticed the change over the last couple of years and at times she can hardly recognise the man she first met. He's now driven and completely career orientated and spends way too much time away from her and with the beautiful but seriously scary Victoria.
Ashley finds herself at Victoria's cocktail party where she meets Victoria's stepbrother Jason, now Jason literally takes her breath away, talk about an Adonis, but since he's related to Victoria she really should keep her distance.
Jason wants Ashley's help but can she trust him, what's in it for him, where will it leave her and the more time they spend together the more her feelings towards him grow but does he feel the same or is she just a means to an end.
This is a lovely entertaining little read, more than just a romance, I loved the main characters and the neighbours, well all the characters really apart from one which was a little OTT for me, a bit too much of a cartoon baddie for my liking but it's still a great read.
At 98% in you'll get a page which simply says THE END keep going the epilogue is after this.

One of my 2023 Book Goals is to catch up on my review backlog, which is currently sitting at 64 books. SIXTY FOUR BOOKS I need to review and post. I am so annoyed with 2022 Payten.
.
First up: Undercover Love by Lucy Score! I read this back in July after discovering her books were on KU and going on a binge. This had was a fast read that was funa nd flirty with a little danger, a little spice and a little laughter all wrapped up in one. Now that I’ve read a good handful of her books, I can definitely tell this is one of her first novels (published in 2015). Her writing and storytelling has evolved so beautifully and I am such a HUGE fan of her newest novels! This is on KU so go grab it!
.
BLURB:
“I’m confused. Do you want me to spy on my fiancé or get naked with you?”

“Both. I thought that was obvious.”

Revenge. It’s the only thing Ashley can think about after finding her supposed fiancé, Steven, with his tongue down the throat of the worst human being in the history of the world—his colleague, Ice Queen Victoria. Turns out it’s not the only body part he’s betrayed her with.

Humiliated and furious, Ashley finds herself being propositioned by security expert and ridiculously sexy Jason Baine. But he’s not just looking to get her into bed. He needs her help taking down Steven and Victoria and rescuing his family’s company before it’s too late.

Ashley’s a regular girl, a normal person. She doesn’t dabble in corporate espionage or illicit affairs. At least she didn’t until Jason… But now she’s in too deep and things are getting dangerous.

This was an ok read. I just found it hard to get my head round some aspects of the story. SPOILERS AHEAD......
The heroine, Ash , is not happy in her relationship with her fiance, Steve. He is increasingly focused on work and his co worker Victoria. Ashley becomes involved with Victoria's step brother ,Jason. Steve is an ignorant cheater who seems to have an entirely different persona to the one she was first attracted to. Victoria is nasty. Spiteful, bitchy and malevolent. Jason is a multi millionaire who wants Ash from the start. She cheats on Steve with Jason but it's ok because Steve is already cheating on her and now she is investigating him for insider trading on Jason's behalf. Huh.
Things I did like....The banter/ relationships Ash had with her neighbours and colleagues. The build between her and Jason was nice. He clearly falls hard for her. I just wanted her to have split with Steve before being with Jason.
Victoria was almost too heinous to believe. I did cheer in my head when Ash smashed her nose though!
Overall, was an ok read.
HEA? Yes
Cheating? Not between Jason & Ash but Ash & her fiance cheat on each other.
Sensitive subjects? No

Ashley and Steven were engaged and lived together in Steven's loft apartment. Steven had been spending more and more time at work and meetings and Ashley thought it was all because he was trying to get a partnership in the firm he worked for. Steven worked for Victoria, who Ashley couldn't stand, and she was the stepsister of the owner. Steven took Ashley to a party his company held and he spent all evening with Victoria and other people. There she met the step brother, Jason, One tall dark and handsome man. His grandfather Eli was also very charming. As the evening went on, Jason took her to his study where they had camera's and she saw Steven and Victoria making out. How dumb was she? It seems everyone knew but her. Jason wants Ashley to help get rid of Victoria and in the process also Steven. He wants her to spy on Steven to get him some info to help with whatever plans they both have to do a takeover. This is also where Jason and Ashley find out how much they are attracted to one another. This story does contain sex scenes so it isn't for everyone. The story really held my interest throughout.

Some parts were good. Other parts...not so much. It started out with a lot of promise in the beginning and it just kind of lost me in the middle and the end. The villains were as one dimensional as you can get and it was really hard to take it seriously. We are going into the Dr. Evil variety.

The plot line...very predictable. I grant you that in a romance the plot rarely diverts. But I'm not talking about meeting + sexy times = HOA. That's granted.

It's everything else. The dialogue, the character traits, etc. etc.

The main characters fell so hard and so fast for each other in a way that made no sense to me. Don't get me wrong. I've read plenty of books where there's a lot of insta-lust/love going around and I DUG IT!!!!!

This book failed to make it believable. The H trusted h with family issues so fast that I was like what the what? Didn't you just meet her like 10 minutes ago. And now you are giving the combination to the family vault... *sigh

Moving on.

This is a sweet and lighthearted romance about a young woman called Ashley. She's engaged to Steve, but lately Steve seems to care more about his career than their relationship. While attending a cocktail party hosted by Jason, who is the stepbrother to Victoria, Steve's obnoxious work colleague, the last thing Ashley expected was to have Jason reveal what's been going on behind her back, and what her fiancé Steve has been up to. Furious Ashley promises to help Jason to bring Steve and Victoria to book.

This is a pleasant and fairly quick read. I've not read anything by this author before, and I really like her writing style. The story flows very well. She's also very good at making the connection between her characters seem believeable. I'd be happy to read more of her work.

I enjoyed this light and fluffy romance. Yes, there is cheating in it, and rarely do I find a reason to keep reading once I discover that, but without giving too much away, I'm glad I kept reading. I'm glad for a character who's rich but not OTT with alpha, kinky, manwhore or foul mouth tendencies. How refreshing. He does seem a little too good to be true at times, but I found it nice. The female MC was strong and not overly sweet. I really liked her character, too.

Overall, I enjoyed this. I enjoyed this author's writing style, but wish that it was longer or that there was an epilogue.

Oh well. Even with my wish-fulfillment glasses on, I did not like this at all. I didn't believe any of it: not the characters - or their decisions - or their reactions to the things that went on - or their lack of friends except when necessary - or the cookie-cutter villains - or how easily it all went down.

Especially not the central relationship . And let's not forget the filthy rich, totally hot, and conveniently single guy.

This is a "two beautiful people thrown together by Fate and Dreadful Circumstances find true love in two weeks" story. And those are Not My Thing.

I dont know if this was one of her first books but this did not do what needed to be done.
I think this book actually had the bones of a good book but no meat. I was more intetested in the spying than the romance and that says a lot for a romance book. Idk if a 1 star review is harsh but hey ho.

Let me start off by saying I am a Lucy Score STAN. I love her. Anything she writes? I will absolutely read it. I haven’t read a book of hers that I didn’t enjoy! This book..was no exception! Overall I loved the book! The only issue I hold is that it felt like SOMETHING was missing. I can’t even put a finger on it. Maybe I wanted to get to know the characters better? Maybe I wanted the story to be longer? Something along those lines. None the less I loved this book. She hasn’t let me down yet! I love a protective mmc and a bubbly fmc!

Lucy Score, what happened? I expect her books to hit somewhere between 3-3.5 stars. 4 if I'm REALLY lucky, but this one...

And it should have been fun! Spy on some people! Date a hot guy!

But this was very very meh.

It's from 2015 and it feels like it was. Not because anything is dated, except Ashley's over enthusiasm with being inside a Tesla which have become commonplace, it just feels like Lucy Score wasn't that strong of an author back then.

This book is short. And that's where the problem lies. This story needed a lot more development, and because it's so short, she could have easily done this. But alas, no.

This book features instalove, which is not my jam. Like literally I think the characters have known each other for 2 weeks? And he confesses he loves her. I mean...way to pull a Ted Mosby, buddy.

The wrap up after everything feels super rushed too. And it kind of ends on some trauma. Jason confesses some dark things to Ashley, then Ashley gets attacked (and kicks some ass) and then BOOM! We get a freaking ROUND UP of everything that happens between the couple afterward. Like, you just trauma dumped on me, I need at least a chapter or two of the couple being, ya know, happy or at least together. It just felt like the book ended with more bad than good as a reader, so you didn't finish the book with a happy feeling, the trauma outweighed the HEA at the end still.

Again, this could have been fun and it could have used more development. But oh well.

I did finish this and then have the urge to never pick up another romance book again, so that's probably not good, but I think that has more to do with the fact that I've been neglecting my one true love of fantasy/sci-fi and now my brain is rebelling.

Ahh, yes. Betrayal, revenge, one REALLY awful woman, some steamy times, and a little corporate spying. Because why not, right?

To say Ashley is blindsided by her ex's infidelity would be putting things mildly. In her fury over finding out what he's been up to, she agrees to help Jason. Seeing as Ashley's ex's other woman is also Jason's step-sister (and the really awful woman mentioned above), their teaming up isn't entirely out of the blue. But the sparks that ignite between them? Those are a little unexpected.

Meanwhile, Jason isn't above using Ashley's bad luck in men to help free his family's company from the grip of his horrid step-sister. He absolutely doesn't expect to fall for Ashley as hard as he does. He also might have a bit of a control issue. As in, he doesn't like when things are out of his control.

Which is just one of the speedbumps these two have to figure out. You know, along with the cheating ex, the horrible step, and the handful of half truths that are floating around. Good stuff!

I like chick literature. They help in keeping the mood mellow when things get intense. The book is not only a pleasure to read but also ha components that add a spark. The romantic element is not only intense but it hits the right nerve. Definitely some PG-rated moments. The cover image reflects the same spark that you read between the lead protagonists. It definitely attracted my attention when I was trolling for books to read.

Each page reveals a depth in character which complemented the story-line . The characters were in tune with what the writer wanted to convey, and I was glad to note no lag behind. Every character depicted have been fully justified in their role. The storyline is pretty simple and can be anticipated, but it is still worth a read. The language is kept simple, which reflects the simplicity of the plot.

My opinion: It is a light read for some alone-time moment. Quick, simple and intense. That’s all a girl needs.

My rating: 4 out of 5
