Book 2 but did it come first?

It's confusing to me when I read that Book 1 of this supposed series is "coming soon." Oh well. That doesn't have any bearing on this story.

Ian McDermott, Ph.d, is done with werewolves for the time being and has moved onto that other fine group of demonic beings - Vampires. Accompanied by his faithful German Shepherd, Scout, who was inherited from the deceased sheriff in book 1, Ian finds himself in a small northwest town Astoria, which has had a problem with people dying with nary a drop of blood left in their bodies. After checking in with the local police and getting their approval for his investigation, Ian meets a rather colorful local author - Clayton Collins, and his niece, Zoey. There's a club in town that seems designed for the vampire set. Filled with goth type vampire wannabes the place is calling out to be noticed. With a dye job to fit in better and some new clothes and other attention from Zoey, Ian is ready to investigate...

So was it a good story? Pretty much. It kept my attention although I had to object to Scout's treatment. Too many cheeseburgers and not enough walks to relieve himself. How that dog didn't poop all over Ian's car, trailer, hotel room, whatever, I'll never know. That's why this is a work of fiction. Forget the vampires. A German Shepherd fed that diet and not given enough time outdoors is a recipe for disaster. I speak from experience...

Oh no, I hate the be that person- but this is BAD. This is not serious horror, but more horror "lite". I requested this audible for free and am giving this review voluntarily. As an audiobook, I found the sound effects to be distracting rather than adding to the atmosphere. The bulk of the book goes into detail about EVERY SINGLE MEAL the protagonist eats during his investigation. They talk about food. A lot. And the protagonist also talks to his dog. A lot. The End. The culmination of events occurs on Halloween, so I guess it has that going for it.

I enjoyed this book very much and hated coming to the end of it. I hope this series continues. This author, David Rueben Aslin, has become my new favorite author and I can't wait to read more books by him.

This is a pretty good book. I loved Shawn Salzman’s narrations. I was not crazy about the background noises, like barking and music. Sometimes it interferes with hearing the book. The story was good though.

Not much vampire action

Although, not a bad story, I do wish there where more scenes vampires. You really don’t get much until the end and even that is limited.

David Rueben has accomplished something other vampire authors can only hope to achieve one day. His incredible book, “Red Tide – The Flavel House Horror: Vampires of the Morgue” is undeniably the best vampire novel I have ever had the great pleasure of reading. Take it from me, the time I’ve dabbled in vampire fiction far exceeds the average of most avid readers out there.

Several aspects of this book attributed to its “best of all” status I’ve awarded. First of all, this book hooks you from the very beginning. You are probably familiar with the expression “I couldn’t put it down” but for me, this has never been more true. I’ve blown through books faster than a speeding bullet, but this one was different; this one captivated me. It sucked me in and held me there in its twisted web of thrills.

Rueben’s writing style never swayed from outstanding, in fact it only got better the deeper I delved. His characters are probably the best-developed characters in today’s fiction. The fact that he used actual locations only added to this phenomenon. His characters fit in perfectly with the surroundings and plot line. What is even more impressive is the way he developed a unique and near indescribable relationship with the characters.

The flawless way the characters interact with each other builds an intense interdependent relationship between the characters’ actions and the plot line. The extravagant and well thought out plot keeps you on the edge of your seat as Rueben slowly feeds you only the information he wants you to know at the time. This makes for an astonishing and unforgettable thrill ride of a vampire novel. Speaking of vampires, these vampires are EXACTLY the kind of vampires you want to read about. They are intriguing, murderous, wicked, and undeniably maniacal: the perfect attributes for a riveting story! But it’s not all horror, blood, and guts, it has a touch of fun and a certain intrigue that pulls it all together, making this a deadly and addicting book.

Rueben has masterfully executed his premise, characters, and plot. What’s left? Oh yes, he has also perfected his unique and captivating voice as a writer. The narration is off the charts, enthusiastic, eventful, and utterly exceptional. In most books, I live for the dialogue and skim the narration, not this one! This book had me enthralled sentence for sentence, word for word. The dialogue fits perfectly, and the narration flows between scenes. This is fun, exciting, horrifying, and all around terrific!

I cannot recommend this book highly enough to vampire lovers everywhere. This is the book the vampire community has been waiting for… this is the vampire breakthrough novel.

Five stars and well deserved.

Yikes! Wow, I’m glad this was fiction!

…or was it? Please tell me it was fiction…

Cripes–well, so much for sleeping with the lights off.

Okay, I should back up and let you in on what has me so worked up.

Ian McDermott, a cryptozoologist-turned-private investigator, has come to Astoria, Oregon with a new case to investigate. Fresh from the small town of Harmony Falls, where he’d just finished wrapping up the Loup-Garou investigation, he has heard rumors of some strange goings-on at a new nightclub, The Morgue.

People were disappearing, and all fingers pointed to the owner of the nightclub, one Vladimir Drago Salizzar, who coincidentally blew into town at the same time these disappearances started happening. Was this mere profiling of a strange, enigmatic character, or was there more to these rumors than just talk?

Ian takes on the case, with the blessings of the local police. He and his dog, Scout, are teamed up with one Ned Parker, who can only help him with as much as the authorities have been able to legally uncover.

For the rest of the information he needs, Ian has the lucky chance to meet a local author, Clayton Collins. This man knows a great deal (almost on a personal scale) about the myth and history of the vampire–including the story of Lilith, and the Unholy Power of Three that seems to permeate the vampire world. He introduces Ian to his niece, Zoey, who is only too eager to help him solve this mystery.

Safe and sane, right? Problem solved–bad guys are found, good guys exonerated, all that business.

Oh, you like to think so…but I can assure you that NO ONE here is exactly what he or she seems to be.

Even the dog.

This book was so well-written in so many ways. It attracted me first off because I am so familiar with the scenes and names Mr. Reuben used (with official permission) in this book. I’ve been to Astoria and I’ve seen the streets and buildings he so colorfully adds to his tale.

But what really kept my interest was the tightly-woven story, where there were no loose ends–except the intentional ones. Everyone is suspect, which makes for a great mystery story. As I said, even the dog is worth watching….

I liked the way the “extras”, if you will, walked into and out of the book like characters in a movie. No pretentiousness, no “sticking out like a sore thumb”–every one of these people had a part to play, and played it well.

“Loup Garou” is in my line of sight for reading next. I’m sure I will enjoy it as much as I did this book.

And I’m sure that, some day, Mr. Reuben will tell us what happened to Lucy’s body. Until then, I think I’ll visit Astoria in the daylight, thank you.

I was so looking forward to this as I absolutely adored book 1, but to be honest, it's a bit of a let down!

This time we see Ian in Astoria, Oregon. He is investigating the grizzly murders that are leaving people mutilated and drained of blood. He has an idea of what may be causing the murders, and after what happened in book 1, he now knows that the things that go bump in the night are real, but how can he find the Vampires and stop them? Just what lore is real and what is not?

As I said, I loved book 1 and was really looking forward to this. I eagerly started it but for about half to nearly three quarters of the book, I found my attention wandering. I didn't think it was as fast paced as I was hoping, and the dialogue between the characters became quite annoying! It seemed like they had to say the persons name, whom they were talking to, multiple times during their talk. It was repetitive and very very tedious. About half way through I was going to put it aside for later but I persevered as I wanted to see what would happen.

Now it wasn't all bad. The characters were all well developed. Ian was as awesome as always and along with Scout, his trusty dog, they make a great team. In this one, they meet a prolific writer and his niece and I enjoyed the twist the author put on for them. I also enjoyed the Vampire lore and mythology., it showed that the author did his research well. I enjoyed the club they were investigating but did think the author could of made the villain a little more mysterious. We know kind of from the start that it's Vladimir Drago Salizzar that is the vamp, but I wished we had a bit more suspense before finding this out.

In all, it's a good read and has me very curious to see where the author takes the story. I still love Ian and definitely want to continue the series but I hope the author can fix the issues with the dialogue because it really has the potential to be a great series.

S.W. Salzman did a great job again with the narration. There wasn't as many sound effects in this as in book 1 but there were still some, and they were all well placed. He had plenty of different tones for the characters and made the book a little more enjoyable.

*I received this for review from the narrator via AudioBook Boom. This in no way affected my thoughts.*

Loup-Garou: The Beast of Harmony Falls (The Ian McDermott, Ph.D., Paranormal Investigator Series Book 1)

Red Tide: The Flavel House Horror / Vampires of the Morgue (The Ian McDermott, Ph.D., Paranormal Investigator Series Book 2)

The Ian McDermott Series, Books 1 and 2, were not bad but they were not great either. The concept, a cryptozoologist investigating unsolvable crimes, has potential. In the first book, Ian is looking into the case of missing hikers near Harmony Falls. He makes friends with the local sheriff and his deputy. Ian is a poor soul. He lost his wife and daughter in a car accident several years before and now lives in a camper and various liquor bottles. Working with the Harmony Falls police rekindles his love of investigations and he finds a purpose in life again.

In the second book, Ian goes directly from Harmony Falls to Astoria, Oregon to help another police department with a series of grisly slayings. He meets a local writer of horror stories who has quite a few secrets. Again Ian the driving force in the investigations and attempting to solve the crimes.

As I said, the concept, especially the future laid out at the end of book 2 has a lot of potential. There is a serious problem with the books in the way the dialogue is written. It is awkward and clunky. There is not a natural flow to it. All the characters always identify who they are speaking to by name, every time they speak to them. It gets tedious. I would suggest Mr. Aslin look at the conversations in the Adrian’s Undead series. They flow naturally and do not seem forced. I know conversation is a very hard thing to write but it really does need to be worked on in these two books.

I purchased both books because the descriptions intrigued me. I read the mixed bag of reviews on Amazon but still decided to try them. I would give the first two books of the series a solid three stars but am not sure whether I will continue with it when the next book is published.

Dr. Ian McDermott Ph.D. has started to turn his life around as he and his newly acquired sidekick, Scout, start down a new path as paranormal investigators. Having previously successfully dealt with a werewolf, now the focus of his new investigation is on vampires, one in particular known as Salizzar. Upon his arrival and establishment of a goth-style club known as The Morgue, people have begun to disappear and bodies are being found in the river drained of blood and missing body parts. This time he picks up an invaluable ally, an author who is extremely well versed with this supernatural creature of the night. Working with both the police and the niece of this mysterious author, McDermott quickly discovers that all is not as it seems and finds himself drawn out of his usual element.
Cleverly written and I especially loved the running theme paying homage to what is commonly believed the world’s greatest vampire novel, Bram Stoker’s Dracula. If you have read Dracula, then you will have no problem picking up upon these subtle hints including the pattern of threes. Once again Aslin managed to keep me up all night because I could not put down my tablet, but I’m not complaining because it was well worth it. Highly recommend!

This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBoom dot com.

I haven't read book 1 in the series, but book 2 stood alone fine.

I don't know how i feel about the story. For a paranormal story, we don't see anything paranormal until the end of the book. For a PI story, there's no investigation. In the beginning of the story, Ian decides he needs to go to the Morgue, a distasteful vampire-esque night club. He spends the middle of the story lounging around and flirting with a girl. Then finally at the end he goes to the night club and we reach the climax. On the way, he meets a fiction writer once, who acts as the story's wise-old-man trope. Suddenly the author gives him a lot of money and calls them friends. I don't buy it. Without giving spoilers, I didn't buy the end of the story either for similar reasons. 3/5

As for the narrator, i thought he was fantastic. He was great with the hysterical Sally and older author and radio messages. He uses some sound effects like music, dog barking, and door opening. He didn't convince me he was a sexy 20 year old girl, but to be honest, I'd be a little creeped out if he did. 5/5

Red Tide
David Reuben Aslin
(Ian McDermott, Paranormal Investigator Book 2)
Mr. Aslin has once again written an excellent adventure. Very detailed, yet flows so effortlessly and quickly. Great characters, good background, everything that makes a great read, David has delivered in this one.
Ian McDermott has embraced his new found energy for investigating the paranormal and finds himself in small town of Astoria. He is there to investigate the rumors of a vampire cult.
No spoilers, just a promise that this is a great story that you do not want to miss. I cannot wait for the next adventure, Schizomega. You will also want to add Loup-Garou to your reading list, as it is the first in the series of Ian McDermott, Paranormal Investigator.
Nothing less than 5 stars.

Having read this book before and after it was edited, I can say that it has dramatically improved.
Even before editing, the dialogue, though awkward in some places, was good. The characters spoke as real people might, and each character has their own voice. Ian's back story is well-developed, and the continuity as flawless from its prequel, Loup-Garou: The Beast of Harmony Falls (Formerly Moon Rises Harmony Falls).
The thought that goes behind these books is extensive, and David Reuben has gone above and beyond in terms of research. He knows his folklore, mythology, and superstitions, and he ties them all together in a way that makes perfect sense. Red Tide is a good read for any vampire lover and can be read independently of Loup Garou, though I recommend picking up both of them.

You know a story line is great when you find yourself a fan of the main character’s pet as well. Red Tide: The Flavel House Horror is the second installment to the Ian McDermott, Ph.D., Paranormal Investigator Series by David Reuben. David does a great job combining the paranormal and mystery genres to spin a tale that takes place in our own backyards. Each character has an important role in moving the plot along. There were no empty fillers in this book. Even Scout, Ian’s dog, has an important role to play. Did I mention I love this dog? My only complaint is that book 3 is not ready to be purchase. I hope David does not make his fans wait too long. His next installment promises to be just as good and I am eager to get my hands on it.

Shakespeare a VAMPIRE! Holy fangs Batman!

Shakespeare a VAMPIRE! Holy fangs Batman!

Got to admit, I went into this series with low expectations. Saying that I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. Well written with a flawed protagonist who overcomes his fears, "Red Tide" is a very enjoyable read as is the the 1st book in the series.

This was good...

The characters were all well developed, the story grabs you and carries you, as on a tidal wave, towards the unexpected climax. well worth the investment, and an incredible read! I highly recommend this to anyone who likes those things that go bump in the night, as long as they are contained in a book....

Great series!

So, Ian is at work again investigating murders which appear as if vampires are real. Once again the author hit home with character development and storyline. The ending has a twist which made me want to begin the next book even before reviewing this one. I love this series and look forward to more chills and excitement.
